Maybe it was an off night? The reviews were good so we decided to order from here, getting the fungi pizza and Hawaiian. My partner and I are fasting for Ramadan so we were starving. Neither of us could even eat the pizza. The Hawaiian was for me and the sauce and the ham both tasted off. My partner doesn't eat pork so he got the fungi and said the mushrooms tasted really bad. He tried taking them off, but it didn't really help. Luckily I got some side salads to eat which were fine. But we ended up throwing out the pizzas and just fixing up some leftovers. read more

Native New Yorkers no longer need to bemoan the sordid fact that most pizza in California flat out sucks. Start off with pasty thick dough, carelessly toss on a potpourri of ingredients, then let it sit for a few hours in a glass case. If a customer asks which pie just came out of the oven, they say they're all fresh, they just need to be reheated. Not at Basil. You can see it's made fresh. When you pick up a slice, it's got a crispy bottom and thin crust, so when you raise it up to your mouth, it folds itself in half on its own in readiness. Of course they have the four essential pizza condiments on hand so you don't have to ask for them like you do everywhere else. Like, asking for garlic powder gives way to a half-hearted search in the kitchen. Either they apologize stating that they're all out (come on, really, a pizza place without garlic powder?!) But occasionally they actually do find some in a giant container, and pour it into a solo plastic cup with a sealable lid, sufficient to smother the surfaces of a dozen extra large pizzas. Damn was I happy with a bonafide garlic shaker in hand. Of course oregano, of course parmesan, of course chili pepper flakes. And when you taste it, you're swiftly transported to that other downtown in less time that it takes to wipe a tiny drop of oil off your chin. New Yorkers, please go here, then write back and share your opinion. If you've found pizza that tastes more like a N.Y. slice somewhere else in Oakland, it need not stay your little secret. I've visited Basil Pizzeria twice now. As someone who lived in New York for over 20 years, I'll safely say that their plain cheese pies pretty well hit the mark for tasting like classic New York pizza. The crust is thin and crispy, with a good balance between sauce and cheese. I've also tried their eggplant parmigiana sandwich and was very disappointed in that. The eggplant was thick-cut, breaded and fried but extremely greasy, and served on acme bread instead of the expected hoagie roll, with minimal sauce and cheese. I won't be trying that again, but will stick with their pizza. Counter service is quick, and there are a number of tables and counters within the small space, allowing for at least a few different seating configurations. However, this wouldn't be a good place to eat in with a large group. read more

The worst service off all time. We were recommended by a friend that this place was really good. We hopped on Yelp and ordered and waited excitedly and patiently... but... We waited patiently for an hour and reached out to Grub Hub who was fulfilling the delivery. They said there was a delay. We accepted and waited an additional HOUR. A whole two hours after we ordered we called Grub Hub again this time Grub Hub put us on a brief hold and returned 2-5 minutes later and said the restaurant was unavailable! We then called the restaurant twice to no avail. We cancelled the order and decided to take business elsewhere. A personal note to the owners, operators of this establishment. If you continue to treat customers this way you'll be out of business very soon. Personally I hope you go under if this is reoccurring issue. Word of mouth spreads quickly. Platforms like Yelp actually matter. There's little you can do to win our business back I hope the readers of this review actually consider this review. Because this experience is unacceptable. Here's a tip on basic customer service: ANSWER THE PHONE! If your business partner can't get ahold of you, there is a massive issue. If you can't fulfill orders, then you should let the client know. I had previously made a review in Yelp due to an issue with an order but deleted it because the owner went out of his way to correct the issue. He even delivered my next order in person so that he could apologize face to face! I didn't feel it was fair to leave the review up at all seeing how genuine the owner, Ray, is when it comes to the satisfaction of his customers. One singular bad experience does not change the amazing food I've received there in the past. Their meat lovers pizza with olives added (pic attached) is by far the best pizza in Oakland. This is the closest you will get to genuine east coast pizza. My fiancé and I have tried most pizza places in the area and have not ordered anywhere else since we discovered this gem a few months ago. Their service is great and always fast so we ordered delivery tonight. It's my finances birthday and he is obsessed with pizza so I requested that they make him a heart shaped pizza and not only did they meet my request but they nailed it and he was so surprised! We ordered a second small pizza and unfortunately the bottom was burnt pretty badly (this has never happened before) so I called them and within minutes they had a new pizza in the oven for me and were delivering it to my door. The manager was polite, understanding, apologetic and very pleasant to deal with. It's always embarrassing and annoying when you have to call about a food problem, but they were great and were happy to resolve the issue as quickly as they could. That's really all you can ask for, I mean this kind of stuff does happen, even to the best places. So with all that said- they still get my 5 stars, because they deserved them. My roomate and I had to watch the Bachelorette finale with pizza and we are glad to have chosen Basil! We ordered the veggie 16 inch and were satisfied with the size and taste. The caramelized onion were an unexpectedly perfect touch to the other veggies and the mozzarella sticks were a hit. We originally wanted to add more additions to our order, but I don't think Uber Eats has the right functions to flag any changes to the restaurant (this is completely out of Basil's control).
