First, I want to be clear that I love the pizza here at Basil Pizzeria. Hence, I recommended them to my co-workers. Our office orders their pizzas delivered every now and then. The crust on the Neapolitan style dough is the perfect thickness and just the right crunch. Today, however, instead of delivery, we decided to enjoy the nice day and walk to Basil and pick up sliced pizza during our lunch break. THE SPACE~: It's a cozy space that accommodated a table that seats four and bar tables with chairs at either side of the angled entrance of the restaurant (only one side is usable when there's a line). THE SERVICE~: When we arrived, we noticed that there was only one person working. It's the lunch rush and a queue was starting to form right when we got there. The guy was attentive and got his flow down, but I couldn't help but feel bad for him, as there's pressure to get orders in with the line building up. He was doing a whole pizza, customizing and heating up pizzas, putting together salads all while handling each transaction. FOOD: We ordered slices of the Neapolitan and cremini pizzas with added sausage, an arugula salad, a tomato mozzarella salad. It's hard to describe the food because of the next item on my list. FOOD HANDLING! We noticed... and we talked about it at length while walking back to the office. He NEVER changed gloves or washed his hands between our orders after handling our cash. AND we saw him use said gloved hands to move our pizzas, scoop up arugula salad with the same gloved hands, assemble a tomato mozzarella salad again with the same gloved hands and taking our payments in between. Mind you, it was noon, and they opened at 11 A.M. We don't know how many cash transactions he's done in the last hour. We wanted to speak up but he was a one-man operation and it was busy... at least our pizzas went through a 500 -degree oven. To the management: It's probably impractical to ask your employee/s to wash his/their hands every time he/they touches cash and the register, but please...at least CHANGE GLOVES. Came across this delicious place when I was visiting Oakland from the South Bay. I am addicted! The homemade mozzarella and homemade pizza sauces are AMAZING! My 8 year old ate two slices of the pepperoni and I had the pesto pizza. The garlic knows are sooo good! Jury duty had me looking for lunch one fine day, and as I walked in a random direction, I found this place. It has a lot of good potential, and although it has only been open for about a month according to the guy (owner?) who took my order both times I visited, I have very few quibbles to mention. The first visit, I ordered a veggie sandwich, the verdure. I was surprised to discover that I have a limit for how much olive oil is too much - and this sandwich hit it. Not only was the bread pretty hard and kind of flavorless, the oversaturation of EVOO, with not enough (in my opinion) balsamic, totally ruined the experience. I ended up tossing the top half of the bread and eating the veggies, which were *also* soaked in olive oil, but with the abundance of fresh mozzarella and basil leaves, pretty tasty. It seems like arugula salad comes with everything on the menu, and with the huge size of the sammiches, that is just way way too much food. With it already a touch on the spendy side, I would rather see smaller portions and a drop in prices. My second visit, I knew to ask for no salad with my margherita pizza slice. This was a MUCH better choice - tasty, fresh and the perfect lunch size. I also tried a cannoli, but ended up quite disappointed as it was almost totally flavorless. One more non-food related complaint is the teeth-jarring selection of music/sportsball radio blaring out from a handful of speakers. Quieter is better, and maybe something a little less intrusive/aggressive/work-inappropriate, at least during the slow hours. I did like the general decor, although watch out for the benches along the window. Splinters Happen! All in all, this was a good find, and I do plan on coming back to check it out again as the owner and the menu get settled in. read more

AND THERE WASN'T ANY BACON ON THE PIZZA. Since I ordered through Eat24 getting a refund for the $2.50 wasn't worth the hassle. I'm just not going to order again. I am vegetarian, and my husband is a straight-up carnivore, so we always order our pies half cheese, half pepperoni. They accidentally made it whole pepperoni, and kindly offered to make another pie. (I've had a string of experiences lately where employees at other places get huffy when you point out mistakes, so their quick offer to rectify it was so nice!) A whole new pie would be a waste so I just picked off the pep, no problem. They then offered me a free slice of plain pizza (even after I said it was totally fine) AND gave us free cannoli (which were AMAZING) to make up for it. They went above and beyond for such a tiny misunderstanding, and that did not go unnoticed! Thanks friends! As for the food, the pizza is deliciously reminiscent of the east coast pies I grew up with. Perfectly thin and crispy crust, flavorful sauce and the right amount of cheese. And the fried ravioli are BOMB. Mozz sticks are also great. The one thing I wouldn't order again are the garlic knots, mostly because I am so spoiled from back east. With so many pizza options, you really should give Basil a try. The pizza is AWESOME, but the extra cool thing is that if you want to add some non-pizza food to your meal, you're in the right place. The mango habanero wings are the best wings I have had. Period. They also have the standard buffalo wings and even non-sauced. You can also get the baked chicken leg, which is a good meal for one and easily splits (they cut it) if you want to share. (You won't want to share.) It's a hearty hunk of chicken, with fabulous Indian spices. Lots of pizza places have non-pizza options, but Basil's non-pizza options are worthy of their own restaurant. Menu changes that aren't reflected in the menu...I order the same thing and literally got three different pizzas... ...who puts grilled onions on pizza... and how often are these grilled onions made. After ordering, I had a chance to get to know Bobby, the new owner, really well and see how they're getting along during these tough times. Found this place on YELP! Was on the hunt for a pizza that would please a pizza lover, a non pizza lover (barely likes it) and a 103 year old who likes her Hawaiian pizza and chicken wings! This place hit all the right spots! The pizza was delicious with a great thin crust. We got a 14" and a dozen wings. The pizza was more than enough for 4 of us with the wings.
