My sister was raving about the SPG Detroit style pizzas and that I should give it a try. I found out that there was location at 9th and Washington in Old Oakland. I used to work a couple blocks away and since retiring, I haven't been to this area in a while and remember dining at this location that SPG is located now. I ordered The Big Von, which has white sauce, sausage, pepperoni and hot honey. First time trying this pizza style, which is rectangular in shape and it's thick crusted like focaccia and it is light and airy. It was tasty and first time I had hot honey on a pizza. Two weeks later, I ordered the Ellen Supreme, which has vodka sauce, pepperoni, sausage, grilled red onions, marinated red peppers and mushrooms and Mush-O-Roni, which has red sauce, mushrooms, pepperoni, hot honey, and grana cheese. Both were delicious but like the mush-o-roni as little more. Must be that hot honey. Both orders were via the app, which was easy. Notification that pizzas were ready right before designated pickup time. Workers were friendly. Those who wish to dine-in, there were inside and outside tables. They are pretty good for sure. I used to LOVE pizza in my younger days (Still do, but can't eat it as much these days). My Goto pizza was also Round Table, or Unos, when Unos was grand...This pizza does the job with its Old School cafeteria square pizza style. It's square with buttery goodness all around the edges...it's got the perfect amount of sauce and cheese, but the bread is pretty thick not to be considered deep dish. I've been several times and always get the Pepperoni pizza...I wish I could add pineapple when ordering ahead, and less bread but they don't allow additions beyond the online menu. I've been back to Square Pie Guys so many times, and this time we ordered takeout on a lazy night. As always, the pizza didn't disappoint, but the sides really stood out. We got the hot honey chicken (my favorite), and it was just as good as I remembered. The garlic fries were especially good this time, still flavorful but a bit less heavy on the garlic, which I actually preferred. We went for the: MUSH-O-RONI - $24 Red sauce, mushrooms, pepperoni, mikes hot honey, grana, parsley. You get 4 thick and hearty slices and it was so good as I remember! Crust was perfectly chewy and crispy and gooey with all the right toppings. Just one and a half fills us each! There's a water station you can self serve for some, and be sure to Wait your own tables AND tip when you order before sitting down! We stopped by Square Pizza and wow. My goodness, it did not disappoint! We ordered the Mush-O-Roni pizza and buffalo wings, and both were amazing. The wings were honestly the best I've ever had perfectly crispy, juicy, and full of flavor. The pizza was delicious too, though I do wish the sauce was a little thicker and a bit more seasoned. The service here is trash at this point. This is the second time I've come into this restaurant and been rushed out or told they're not allowing people to dine it. The restaurant closes at 11:00pm, yet at 9:46pm all of the chairs are put up, and the tables are moved against the wall, etc.!? We asked the attendant were we able to dine in or even outside, mind you we had family in from out of town, he said, "we're not letting anyone dine in because the dish washer wants to go home early." EXCUSE ME!?! Sounds like they need to hire new employees because that is not good service. And again, this is the SECOND time. The instance before that we came in at 8:50pm, ordered 8 pies and some wings between 9 ppl and was told at 10:00pm that we needed to start wrapping up all while they started stacking and moving chairs around us. Mind you the restaurant closed at 11pm. This is not how it used to be at all. This used to be our go to pizza spot in Jack London. Thankfully this time I was able to take my family down to Dragon Gate for dinner. $568 we could have given Square Pie Guys. Your loss. read more

It's a detroit style pizza in the heart of Oakland. We had the Ellen Supreme and the JLin. The JLin was really good as the green goddess sauce made the pizza really special. The Ellen Supreme is your typical meat lovers pie. I did really enjoy the crust though since it's crunchy yet the pizza stays soft and fluffy. The only downside is it's quite pricey. read more

They come 4 slices a pie, and are more doughy and hefty (website says 566 calories per slice!) Tried the hawaiian and vegetarian. Surprisingly the Hawaiian had jalapeno pepper (not sure if intentionally or fell in). Gluten free dough is available. Square Pie Guys is pretty decent! The lemon pepper pizza was good! I was hoping to get a half pizza and not a full, but I found out they only do half pizzas for lunch so this is something to note. While the pizza itself was DELICIOUS, I don't think I'll pay $40 for it again. This place is more of a "try it once just to say you did" type of place, or a "treat yoself" type of place. It's not like a regular pizza shop. And I honestly don't think the price tag is worth size of the pizza. It's basically a personal pizza for one person . Whenever I come back I'll definitely come back during lunch hour for a better deal.
