After 11 years, of no less than monthly patronage, last night was the last time I'll set foot in Basil Thai Bistro. 1 star is the minimum, a 2nd star because the food was good. The rest I'll think about for a really long time. I ordered 3 dinners, a soup and and order of spring rolls over the phone. I wanted a big dinner after a long week. There was some clarification on the springs rolls as they have more than 1 type, and I replied the one that comes with 4. A stupid reply as it turns out, one that will cost me my favorite Thai restaurant for life. I get there, hand over my card and I'm rung up for $103. He rang up 4 full orders of spring rolls. When I protested he blamed me for saying I wanted 4 orders of spring rolls. No regard for the logic, that 3 dinners and a soup with 4 spring roll orders made no sense. That there might of been a misunderstanding or language barrier was never brought up but there was further discussion that my order was taken incorrectly. I never raised my voice, never cursed, I expressed my disappointment, he denied the mistake out of hand. I left. Because there were other customers dining at the time listening to us, I called on my way home telling him he lost my business and he couldn't have cared less. Again didn't raise my voice, no derogatory remarks. My wife and daughter, who heard me make the order, could not believe it when I told them (after bringing home a weeks worth of Spring Rolls) what had happened. What probably would have amounted to $12-$15 in food costs for refunding the 3 extra orders (12 spring rolls), they lost a customer for life. I calculated I spent about $1050 a year there for 11 years straight. Not a lot, but steady and loyal patronage. Definitely not enough for some understanding that I wasn't trying to scam them for free spring rolls. The real talking will be done with my pocketbook. I care more than they do, now I need to find a new spot. On another note, anyone know the best way to reheat fried spring rolls? read more

Honesty is so important for those of us with food allergies!! I asked if they use tomato paste in the Pad Thai noodles yesterday, had a discussion about my allergy and yes, also how odd it is to even put tomato paste in Pad Thai. The girl even went to ask the cook to make sure. His body language seemed offended maybe? Shame on you guys! That is despicable behavior to lie. I'm so glad I didn't have to go to the hospital, but I am miserable and will never eat any of their food again. Which honestly, I'm not missing out on much. How you end up with Pad Thai being greasy when the chicken is so dry is beyond me. The tofu soup was bland, the broth was practically plain water with a little salt. And when I've had fresh spring rolls from here in the past, the lettuce was bitter on the best days if not brown and wilted on other days (sometimes my boss will buy me food from there). I really try to support small businesses and build up what is positive. But if you don't mind people discussing anaphylactic allergies being harmed, then your potential customers really ought to know about it. read more

As always, they greeted me with a friendly hello and treated me kindly throughout my visit. Easy to find parking, seating available for different group sizes. In the "About the business" statement on Yelp, the manager, who I think is the owner states, "Our Thai restaurant focuses on your good health". Based off of the following experience, I have to wonder if that is true. Good food, but I stopped going due to the owner having a habit of wiping his nose with his index finger more than once when he had what appeared to be a cold. After watching him wipe the front of his nostril with his index finger, he then walked over to the kitchen area and picked up plates of food to deliver to customers. If anything was on his index finger, it probably got on the customers' plates and maybe in their mouths. Due to the owner's bad hygiene and possible bad sanitation, I don't go back to this restaurant. I saw him do this two times. I believe the health dept requires food workers to wipe their noses with their arms, but the owner of this restaurant does not do this. To anyone who reads this, the next time you go to this restaurant, watch the owner and see if he continues to do this bad habit. If the owner replies to this message letting me know he plans on being more aware of his hygiene practices and will stop wiping his nose with his finger, I will remove this review. read more

Yesterday I placed a to-go order in an entirely empty restaurant for their drunken noodles with chicken spicy level 7. The cashier was nice and service was decent. BUT to my horrifying disappointment-- I got home to open my food and there was a black hair in my food. I immediately called the restaurant back and explained that there was a hair found in my food and that I preferred a refund. The receptionist tried to then tell me they CANNOT provide a refund to me but rather would remake my food. I was like absolutely not! Hair in food should not occur in this day and era because there are so many preventive ways to avoid hair in customers food. So remaking my food is not an option because at that point I just don't trust an establishment as far as cleanliness. After discussion, they agreed to refund me and that I would bring the food back so they can inspect it and confirm the hair. My annoyance in this is, that the woman after hanging up, shortly 5 min later called me again to confirm that I would be bringing the food back to which I said YES. Why would I keep or ingest food with hair in it. Anyway, I won't be back here again and if I could give this place 0 stars I would read more

Found this place on doordash & ordered about 20 minutes before they closed because my daughter randomly wanted dumplings lol. We also ordered the spring rolls which were super filling. We enjoyed them and the sauces that came with both were super good and really made the dishes pop!! read more

Nice, chill, authentic Thai restaurant that doesn't have a gazillion items in their menu but serves some of the most delicious dishes from Thailand. From someone who has lived there for more than a decade, I can say that this place is spot on from the polite and thoughtful attitude of the staff, to the lovely decorations and the soft Thai music playing in the background, to the presentation and taste of their food. If you're in the East County of San Diego, check this place out! There's plenty of free parking space and you'll definitely enjoy the food and excellent service. Came here on a whim with a group of 10 - were looking for a place to eat nearby, and someone found this place on Google Maps. First off, it was easy to find and lots of parking. Nice. The place isn't that big, but they seated us immediately. It seemed like a pretty happening spot - there were several groups that came in after us. Service was great, very friendly. They even had a Disney princess plate for my toddler daughter to use! Food came out quickly. Overall, the food was very solid - it wasn't the best Thai food I've had, but it was pretty good (I got the Beef Pad See Ew). I wouldn't mind coming here again. This place used to be good but has gone downhill over the years. The last 2 times we've gone the food has lacked flavor and it seems like they are trying to save money on the type of vegetables in the dishes. I'm not sure if they have new owners or chefs but it's gotten so much worse the last few years compared to when we first tried it about 8-9 years ago, and it's not cheap. Honestly, I'm pretty disappointed. I've ordered Shrimp Pad Thai from this place before, and it was dry and bland--didn't really have flavor. I decided to give it another shot, thinking maybe it was just a one-off. This time, I asked for spice level 7, expecting at least some heat and flavor, but I think they forgot to add the extra kick. Good thing I asked for hot sauce on the side. It's just as bland as the first time. There was no spice, no depth, nothing that makes Thai food exciting. Not going to make a judgement about the food... I didn't get the chance to try it. I am here to slam the customer service. My wife and I called in a take out order to give it a try. We called the order in at about 12:15pm Saturday. The person that took the order told us it would be ten minutes. My wife sat and watched a few more cat videos after she called the order. After that, we left the house about 12:30pm, thinking we were giving them plenty of time to make the order. When we arrived about12:35pm, the order was not ready. My wife paid and we sat, waiting for the order. Keep in mind there were two people seated waiting on the order... in other words, the place was way less than crowded. We are now 20 minutes into the order. We sat for another 10 minutes (about 12:45pm) I then asked the waiter how much longer since were already 30 minutes into the order. Seh said it would be another 10 minutes. Again, keep in mind, the two people in the place are already eating thier order. And, we placed our order at 12:15pm. Well, we waited another 10 minutes since the waiter said that is how ling it would be. Still, nothing. We asked again, and the waiter said it would be 5 more minutes... We waited about 10, not wanting to be rude. At 12:55pm I made it a point to tell the waiter that this is the longest 10 minutes I have ever seen... We called in the order around 12:15pm, and it is now almost 40 minutes later. At this point, we had no estimate on how much longer our order was going to be. There were no other people waiting on orders, and we were 40 minutes into an order that was supposed to take 10 minutes. What a cluster.... the place was less than busy, we order simple appetizers, and the restaurant COULD NOT GET THE ORDER DONE IN 45 minutes. We left with a refund, 45 minutes after we placed the order. There are some really lazy people in the place if they can't get one order done in 45 minutes. Will never be back. read more

The hubby and I ordered Basil Thai for dinner and were pleasantly surprised by how satisfying it was. First of all, our pick up order was ready in 15 minutes, packaged nicely and piping hot. Second, the flavors were really good and those spring rolls stayed nice and crisp. The pad Thai was superb. The chicken was tender, the flavors worked well and it wasn't too spicy. My curry was very well seasoned, had a nice kick at a level 5 and I slurped it all up. My only criticism is that the tofu, potatoes and carrots were huge and could've been cut down by half the size. I know they do this do the vegetables don't turn to mush when cooking, but it made a mess when trying to cut. First time at this sweet and friendly Thai place and returned a week later. Ample parking Clean Quality of food is delicious and fresh. Price is reasonable and so are the portions. Ordered the choo Cher fish which was moist and tender, the sauce was sublime. Other dish was eggplant with vegetables and the sauce was delish. Salmon massaman curry which is a specialty dish was disappointing. Why? The salmon was over cooked so it was hard and rubbery and it tasted freeze dried. Also, the sauce which was flavorful was as watered down. Also, had the tiger steak which was ok. The fried rice with shrimp was delicious. I would focus on the regular Thai dishes and be weary of the speciality dishes. I guess depends on the cook, thou a good restaurant is consistent. Service is friendly and i would return. read more

Tried this spot tonight but unfortunately it was a dud for us. The staff was very friendly but the kitchen was overwhelmed by a large table it seemed so the food came out very slowly. The main issue and the reason for the low rating is that all 3 takeout dishes that we ordered were all subpar in some way. My 2 main entrees were suppose to come with steamed rice per the menu. and they gave us 2 containers of Rice noodles. I paid extra to have 2 meats (chicken and pork) and they only gave us chicken. Their Pad Thai noodles and flavor were delicious as well as the Pad See Ew, but the shrimp was tough and difficult to get through. The sampler was decent but again, the shrimp was tough and the wontons need more cream cheese. The service was mediocre; probably because the girls working were talking quite loudly about personal things, and they were not attentive. The establishment is outdated and it's very cluttered. They have dirty rags and cleaning supplies sitting out amongst dishes stacked on the counter in the dining room. Most likely will not go back. read more

By no means were the food bad, it's actually quite flavorful and tasty, but was it authentic Thai food? No. It should be called a hint of Thai. We ordered quite a lot of dishes, turns out they were not family style and were actually pretty pricey even for individual portions (which were really small too). The food was all on the sweeter side as well and not spicy. This definitely catered more to the demographic of the area (white). I really wanted to try their sweet mango sticky rice. It was so creamy and delicious. The texture of the sticky rice was perfect. Warm and sticky, and held its shape nice.
