Yesterday, after a 3-hour hike, we were starving--me, my wife, my kid, and a few friends, all on the hunt for a solid lunch spot. One of my friends suggested La China on Fletcher Pkwy, and it ended up being exactly what we needed. We ordered a little bit of everything--General Tso's chicken, pork fried rice, spring rolls, Kung Pao chicken, sweet & sour pork, just to name a few--and every dish delivered. Crispy, tender, juicy... straight comfort food that hits after a long hike. This place isn't new, and it's definitely not fancy--but that's part of the charm. Don't come here for the looks; come for the food. Spots like this usually have the best flavors, and this one proves it. I moved here after my wife passed and was lucky enough to be close to this restaurant. It's good food. My brother retired from Air Canada and I'd call him a foody. Ordered broccoli beef and got a plate of broccoli in slop gravy with about 3 pieces of cheap ass beef. $15.00 for a plate of broccoli. Brings the bill without asking if you need anything else. Yellow mustard and sweet sauce are now Served in a tiny pill cup instead of a bowl. Won't run the a/c in the restaurant in the heat. I quit going there for years because it wasn't worth getting stomach aches over but decided to give it another try but I promise NEVER again. I understand why their business has gone down. This has to be the best "mom and pop" Chinese restaurant in the city!!! The family who runs this place is absolutely wonderful (so friendly and kind) and the food tastes exactly like what I ate at Chinese restaurants as a kid (I'm 51, for reference). It is a small but delightful Chinese restaurant located just off the 125 freeway and Navajo in El Cajon. The price is a reasonable: We ordered a large fried rice for three dollars, the family delight, which had chicken, krab, shrimp and various vegetables in a white sauce for 13.75, and four egg rolls for $7.50. The two of us were actually able to take over enough for someone to have lunch tomorrow! I was craving egg drop soup and sweet and sour chicken so decided to check out La China in San Carlos/El Cajon. It's in the strip mall with a bunch of other shops and looks to be primarily focused on take-out, though I saw a few tables filled inside. The food we ordered took me back to my childhood eating fried sweet and sour chicken, egg drop soup, mongolian beef, and cream cheese wontons. Everything was hot, made with good quality meat and a decent price. The egg drop soup was okay, I enhanced it by adding soy sauce. The fried wonton pieces are always my favorite and they provided a nice side bag of them. The sweet and sour chicken was all white meat served with pineapple, onions and peppers. I asked for sauce on the side so it would still be crisp when I brought it home. The Mongolian beef was very good. Tasty, tender cuts of beef with a generous hand in thinly sliced onions and sauce. The cream cheese wontons were fried and served with the same sauce as the chicken. I was hoping it would be a sweet chili sauce but still good. It's by no means traditional Chinese food, though they do have specialties. It's a clean shop and the lady who took my order and helped me was super friendly and helpful. read more

Located around other stores. Good parking. Placed looked cleaned, but would look better if they organized some of the stuff better. It looks a tad bit like storage in the front. They were friendly and took care of me quick. Kung Po Chicken is ok...not great or good but just ok. Egg rolls are good. Nice booths to sit in. Good lighting. I think their fried stuff might be better than the stir fried. The fried rice was well cooked and soft. Overall an ok spot to stop by when you are shopping and hungry. Good lunch special prices too. We were greeted immediately and we sat down in a booth. The first thing I noticed was there was some kind of air conditioning, but it wasn't normal so it was a little bit warm, and I noticed they had a portable air conditioner, and some fans blowing the air around, I ordered the Kung Pao three ingredient, and my companion had orange chicken, which really wasn't very orange, it was more of a brown sauce that tasted it slight bit of orange, but not much. I also ordered green tea, which I was happy that they had and they brought us a nice big pot. The three ingredients in my meal were beef, chicken, and shrimp and there were three shrimp in the meal, lots of chicken and beef. And it was tasty And I was happy to bring home what I didn't eat. The orange chicken was OK, but it wasn't what was expected because it wasn't really as orangey as most orange chickens are. Food was good and the service was fine, but it did take a long time for them to come and pick up, our payment so that we could get out and leave. I'd rather eat here in the winter time. First of all, what's with the name? La China sounds like an inappropriate conglomerate of Americanized Spanish tacked onto China as an afterthought. Then again, this is an east county hole-in-the-wall next to a CVS so I'm not surprised. How did I find myself here? I went on a very lackluster date and sad to say, this restaurant was a mirror image of how this date went. So, what baffles me is that the east county locals dig it. I guess I'm not too shocked... But before I open that can of worms, I just want to be kind and nuanced with a few positives about La China: - cheap, decent portions - friendly service (although the server quickly threw fortune cookies and the bill at us when HIS plate was sucked down despite MY plate being 3/4 full) - quiet and I guess intimate for those who have been hitched for a long time Now, for the lame details: - lukewarm food with a watery, canned taste - terribly bright garage-style lighting - lackluster decor - entrees don't automatically come with rice (this I could somewhat forgive but considering the blahness... you can at least make white rice free) So, there's my two cents. The service was very good and the employees were friendly. The prices are below the average Chinese restaurant these days, averaging about $13 per entree rather than $20. We ordered cashew chicken, crispy pan fried noodles, egg foo young and pecan chicken. We enjoyed the fluffy egg foo young and sauce, although hot bean sprouts are not appetizing and should be put on top at the finish. The cashew chicken had plenty of cashews, but the sauce was pure hoisin and completely overpowered anything else. We asked for the pan fried noodles to be crispy, but they placed them in a pool of sauce so the noodles were soggy when we got them. They have been around a long time and I realize they aren't trying to get Michelin stars, but we probably won't go back. The dining room is surprisingly large if you want to eat there. read more

The Cashew Chicken was ok not the best but edible. Again a small entree for the price. Fried rice don't bother, essentially steamed rice with sosome Soy sauce. Their prices are fair .I'm impressed with the precautions that they are taking during this Covid-19 world crisis. I think you will be too . This place was definitely surprising to me. It's a small hole in the wall and not very busy. The food is very good. My dad ordered a vegetarian dish with rice and said it was the best he had ever had. I ordered a chicken fried rice for my daughter and garlic chicken for myself. I ended up eating my daughters fried rice with her and skipping my chicken as it was not quite my taste buds. But the fried rice was actually better. I would review this place a little bit higher, but there were a couple interesting things about it. First of all, in the kitchen we could hear them yelling at each other. That went on throughout the night. We weren't sure if someone was going to hit each other or there was going to be a fight that burst out of the kitchen door because it was very loud and consistent. But looking around at the waiters nobody even seemed to notice. That was so unsettling that everybody was a little bit nervous and on edge for the whole meal. I am assuming that that was a one time occurrence. But I am not sure. Also, the ambience was not what I prefer when sitting down inside of a restaurant. The lights were very bright and there were many things still being stored in the dining area. But, if this place is going to be for takeout, I would most likely order from here again as the service was good. One final note, I could not find a glass of wine that I enjoyed. The selection was very limited to very inexpensive (cheap) wine. My dad did order a Cabernet and could not even drink a few sips. I would love to see this place maybe get a couple good bottles on their list to match their food quality. With these tweaks, I would give it a five star. read more

On one of the 10 days it rains San Diego I wanted some hot and sour soup and some crab ragoons. Lots of mixed reviews of la China but I'd say it is definitely at parity with surrounding Chinese restaurants in the region, namely panda country and mr. spicy. I was expecting Albertsons quality but got Kiel's quality if you know what I mean. Soup was hot and spicier than I expected which was nice but not blow you out of the water spicy. The grab ragoons were way better than other places for some reason. It wasn't over cooked and the inside was the perfect temp. Haven't tried anything else on the menu but I'll probably give it a shot since la China is a 5 min drive from my house. read more
