He is an excellent artist who enjoys what he does and the results speak for themselves. While each artist at this shop is friendly, professional and highly skilled in their own design and work, I will continue to work with EJ. My only criticism is the music is loud and may not be your particular genre, so bring your fully charged phone and ear buds and tune into your own playlist. My experience was with a former artist, Lachy, who no longer works at this shop. Although he has since moved on, this experience took place while he was employed here, and it accurately reflects how my concerns were handled by both the artist and the shop. I spent a lot of time researching tattoo shops because I wanted high-quality work, and after seeing this shop's reviews and Lachy's portfolio, I felt confident booking with him. One thing I wish had been disclosed beforehand was that there would be a language barrier. Communication throughout the appointment was difficult, and I wasn't expecting that. During the tattoo, Lachy also left for about 10 minutes without saying anything, which I found unprofessional. When the tattoo was finished, I immediately noticed that the lines on the dagger weren't symmetrical and pointed it out before leaving. He attempted to make a small adjustment, but ultimately told me to let the tattoo heal for a month because the lines would settle. After it healed, the issues I was concerned about were still there. I also felt that parts of the tattoo appeared darker than I had expected. I contacted the shop to schedule a touch-up, but I felt it was more difficult than it should have been to get back in. I had also left a $200 deposit for a future tattoo. When I explained that I wasn't sure I wanted to move forward until I felt better about my first tattoo, my future appointment was canceled rather than anyone taking the time to address my concerns or reassure me. When I returned for the touch-up, I felt my concerns weren't taken seriously. Two other artists, Harim and another artist, looked at the tattoo and acknowledged that the lines weren't perfectly straight, even though they didn't believe the issue was severe. I appreciated their honesty, but this tattoo is permanent and on my body, so my opinion of the final result mattered. The solution ended up being to make the lines thicker, which helped slightly but did not correct the original issue that bothered me. After the touch-up, Lachy returned my $200 deposit and told me he wouldn't be doing my next tattoo because he doesn't do black-and-gray work. That confused me because his portfolio included black-and-gray tattoos, which was one of the reasons I chose him. The following day, I called the shop and spoke with the manager, Vanessa, hoping to explain why I was disappointed. She told me she already knew why I was calling because Lachy had already spoken with her. During that conversation, I was told that I had "started it." As a paying client who was respectfully expressing concerns about a permanent tattoo, hearing that was incredibly disappointing. I left feeling like I had been labeled a difficult client simply because I wasn't satisfied with the quality of my tattoo and wanted my concerns taken seriously. Four years have passed, and I still feel the same way about both the tattoo and the way my concerns were handled. I liked the concept of the design, but I wasn't satisfied with the execution or the customer service I received afterward. I searched for the perfect artist to take a journey with for over a year. That might seem like a little too long for some but I needed to be sure I had the right person. I am not a tattoo collector looking to add to my plethora of various art pieces. I only have one medium size tattoo. This second one would be the most important and impactful tattoo I will ever get. It may even be my last. So it had to be perfect. It was going to be a memorial tattoo for my mother and it will be a full sleeve. After hours upon hours of researching artists not only for their talent but also for their personalities and character I found Gaijin from Basilica Tattoo. He did freehand designs inspired by the Japanese art form suminagashi (flowing ink) Not only did I love the look of his style but it was so fitting for the memorial since we are Japanese. When I explained what I had in mind he understood as if he saw my vision in his head. I trusted him so much that I changed from my original idea to pretty much giving him a few preferences and then just letting him run with it. On a large piece like this that I knew would take multiple days it was also important that I liked and felt comfortable with the artist. On the second day we did mostly painful areas like the elbow, elbow ditch, inner upper arm, near under arm etc. I am the type of person that will keep going til I pass out and not complain. Gaijin tapped me out for me. We had a couple of hours to go but he said we were done for the day. I looked at him confused and he said " you sat like a champ but your body was shaking, it's saying it's had enough ". He could have told me to take a break and run the clock (charges by the hour) but he did what was best for me. He also reminded me when it was time for my medicine and reminded me to drink water. He was as kind as he was talented. The studio is very nice as well. It is all black with lots of room between stations so you don't feel cramped. There are large paintings on the walls with ornate gold frames. When you are in the waiting room you can look at all their trophies from their various tattoo competitions. There are many other artists there that are amazing as well. There are quite a few well known artists that have a large social media following as well as a couple of artists that have been on the tv show Inked. The atmosphere of this shop is Wide Open Spaces without the crappy country music vibe. And if you're going to spend 1/3 of the day here, it's nice to not feel like you're stuck in a confined area. Lots of room to walk around and pleasant music that isn't too loud, so you can wear your own headphones and zone out. Just don't listen to something with a good beat or you'll start moving around to much. We made appointments months in advance as the artists are super popular, and for good reason. My artist was Omega and he does awesome realism tattoos. I had an idea of what I wanted and he took the idea, searched for examples and designed the tattoo on his Tablet (I think it was a leapfrog, but more advance than mine). It took him like 2 hours and he made an awesome mockup. We arrived at noon after eating at the Sunrise Coffee in the plaza nearby, and I finally got in the chair shortly after 2p. I was there until a little after 8p and am super happy with the finished product. The forearm is a little tricky and he was accommodating to make sure I was in a comfortable position. We took breaks about every 2 hours or so. All of the artists here are super talented (look at their pics), so do your research and make an appointment (and pay a deposit). Make sure you eat before or bring something to eat, just not a Subway Seafood and Crab or Black Bean Soup. For my 1300th Review, why not make is special with the place I got my first tattoo. Once I saw the realistic tattoo style, I decided to just go for it. It's my favorite city and something I've thought about for a long time. We'll see how long it will take for me to get my 2nd! This town is full of good artists. You can find them in any strip mall Only Basilica has Amanda Lopez. She's not a good artist. She's a virtuoso. She is to tattooing what Dali was to painting, what Mozart was to composition, what Brady is to football, what Satriani is to guitars, what Pahlaniuk is to literature, what Scorsese is to film. I've had other tattoos. I brought in some art I created, and they did their best to recreate it. Amanda looked at what I brought, made it better, and brought it to life on my leg. She made it better than the original. She made my subject matter look like she's ready to jump off my leg and into our reality - and somehow be more real than any of us while she does it. Whack tattoo shop for not telling me my artist doesn't speak English until he told me himself at the appointment. I have no issue with a non-English speaking artist, but he misunderstood what I wanted for my tattoo and I'm not going to rely on Google translate to mess up my words, either. I asked for a paintbrush stroke band, he said he understood, and I got a plain black band. I was fine with that, but it's crooked and different sizes around my arm. I can't see the back of my arm well in a mirror, the skin gets distorted. The front looked great to me and I didn't need it to be perfect. He clearly didn't want to do this tattoo, but was fine taking my money and that is something grimy as @#$! to do to anybody. Never trust an artist that doesn't care if you change a design and doesn't ask what you want it changed to. The receptionist didn't tell him about the change to my design, because he didn't know when I got there. WHACK! The receptionist should have told me there would be a language barrier before I came in. Not only that, but he applied my Saniderm so sloppy that it came off in less than 24 hours. I had to go buy new Saniderm, which stayed on for 5 days without an issue when I applied it myself. He told me to keep the SAME Saniderm on for 7 days straight without changing it. What????? Please tell me anywhere online that advises you keep Saniderm on without changing it out within 24 hours or that you keep it on for longer than 5 days. I knew Lachy's hourly rate going into my tattoo. $250 for photorealism is fine. I originally booked Lachy for a realistic piece but changed my mind last minute and just wanted to use up my deposit. Thank God I changed my mind and I chose something simple. I knew the band would take over an hour, but for it to be crooked and uneven? Absolutely unacceptable for $500. Black bands are hard to get lined up, but then refuse the tattoo if you can't do it. Or take the time to make it right. Even better, give me an artist that feels confident they can do it. Or if you know the tattoo isn't tons of shading and linework, charge a flat rate as an exception. There were so many options and the artist chose the shady route. The owner of the studio responded to my partner's review saying that tip means you're happy with your tattoo. No, it doesn't. I tip regardless of service because it's the right thing to do. He spent time on this lame tattoo, so I tipped him for his half effort time - but the reputation of this studio is going to catch up to it if it keeps treating customers this way. Ya'll do some incredible work, especially the owner - that doesn't mean you're in the right because other people got good tattoos. I waited 20 mins for him to take his 'lunch break' at 2pm and stand at reception. He used a small liner to fill in the black until it took 15-20 mins to fill in 2 inches and then swapped needles to a magnum. That's why I'm pissed about the cost. It wasn't 2 hours worth of tattooing, he made it 2 hours. After it heals, I need to go get the band reworked by someone who takes more than 10 minutes to line it up. If you're doing a tattoo outside your comfort zone, you should JUST NOT DO THE TATTOO. I trusted you to put in the work for the money I paid! At the end of the day, I overpaid for this tattoo and that's because I chose a simple design - but it should have been perfect work for that cost. Once again, WHACK. Also, nobody wore a mask despite a government mandate for it either. WHACK WHACK WHACK. Good art doesn't make you good customer service people. I thought for sure a top rated spot with photorealism artists wouldn't mess up something so simple, but here I am, something permanently on my body that was just a payday for my artist. Basilica - Do better. And I'll do better researching studios next time, too. If anybody doubts my experience, look through the reviews for the hummingbird coverup tattoo that somebody has to live with for the rest of their life because the artist wanted $$ instead of admitting they weren't experienced in that type of design. read more

First time tattooer here! After months of research (Google, IG & Yelp), I stumbled upon Masu at Basilica Tattoo. Her style, line work and use of red really caught my eye. I reached out to the shop by eMail and was able to schedule an appointment. Everyone here is super talented, so I highly recommend 1-2...to even 3 months of advance scheduling. First off, the shop itself is absolutely stunning, it's like you're in a cathedral. Beautiful paintings hanging from the ceiling and the shop is very well designed. Masu was very kind, she has a calming presence about her. As you can imagine, I was very nervous, but she reassured me that everything was going to be fine. The design process took about 1.5 hours, my wife and I sketched a reference, but it was awesome to see Masu take what we had and really make it into something beautiful. I cannot stress enough how talented she is. Next, she sanitized and prepped her area and the next thing I know, we are getting started. The tattoo took about 5 hours, she even stayed late to finish it. I'm so grateful that she was the one to provide me with my first tattoo, I hope that I'll be able to get another one from her in the future. They use tagederm as their go-to method of healing/aftercare. My wrap fell off while sleeping (my fault, I slept on my arm ), but Yesenia was able to guide me through the other option of healing (Dial gold & Aquafor). Masu is INCREDIBLY talented. I've been looking for an artist for years and felt comfortable with her and her work. This so far is my largest piece and I'm so so happy with it. She took the time to sit with me to design it with me and draw it in front of me. And she's very down to earth and kind to talk to which I feel is important for the hours and time that I was there. It made the time go faster and made it more enjoyable. She also was very detail oriented, a perfectionist (which is exactly what I wanted), and she takes her time and doesn't rush and it shows in her work. Utah at Basilica Tattoo is hands down, the greatest Tattoo artist I have ever seen. I met Utah after my daughter had him do her Tattoo. He did an original goddess on her forearm, and to this day, it's the most beautiful Tattoo I have ever seen. I asked if he'd be willing to work on a few of my Tattoos; reworks and coverups. I have, unfortunately been to several tattoo artists, with very disappointing results. Each time I tried to have someone fix something it seemed to get worse and worse...Finally, Utah agreed to help me. Disclaimer that I got my tattoo in 2021 but the artist is still there according to their website. I am mostly satisfied with the result. I went in for my consultation a couple months before my tattoo to discuss my idea and give references. I wanted him to get inspiration from my references and make his own design. I also wanted him to incorporate some stars I already had in the area if he could since it fit the theme and style. It turned out he didn't speak much English but I thought he got the gist and I also emailed him the references. The day of my tattoo it was like we had never met and he had nothing drawn up. I asked a woman working there who spoke English what was going on and she said that's just how they do it, on the day of. Then what was the point in me coming in for a consultation? It was a long drive for me and I could have paid the deposit online if he wasn't going to do anything anyway. He ended up showing me an exact copy of one of the references. I should have walked away then but I'd been looking forward to this for so long that I just said okay. He wanted to place it above the stars wrapped around my ankle which would have looked very awkward so I had him move it. Now to the tattooing. I've had quite a few other tattoos done and this was the most painful. He pushed down with the needle pretty forcefully and instead of a smooth wipe between tattooing he pushed down into my leg like he was trying to push every last drop in. Just no relief. When he was done I asked him to do a few more swipes of one of the colors because I couldn't see it (literally a quarter inch thin line he had to add). I'm guessing he didn't agree with that looking better so he did it lightly and I still can't see it. When it was done he applied a wrap that he said stays on for days which I wasn't familiar with, I usually get plastic wrap and tape at other places. That night I had A LOT of ink and blood pooled underneath and I noticed blisters forming on the tattoo which had never happen to me before. So I googled and the company of the wrap said after a few hours on the day of the tattoo to take it off, clean, then apply more which can then stay on for days. Well he didn't say that and I had no more to put on. So I took it off which was very painful like the world's strongest bandaid. The blisters luckily went down after a few days. I didn't know what I would be paying until it was done. It's about 8 inches long and I paid $850 but I don't remember if that was including or in addition to the deposit. The tattoo is done well but every time I look at it I'm reminded of the poor experience and feel bad that it's just a rip off someone else's art. Oh well I guess. read more
