The cookies for the sammich were pretty sweet on their own, so the homemade ice cream definitely helped with that. I also tried one of their homemade Salted Caramels, but I wasn't a fan of them. The kind owner gave my guy and I some treats for our dogs to try and they loved it! Our server, Chaniece, absolutely made the experience. I told her I wanted to order some of the most authentic Spanish dishes on the menu, and she came through perfectly. She was knowledgeable, friendly, attentive, and genuinely seemed excited to help us experience the restaurant. If you have questions about the menu, ask for her recommendations--you won't be disappointed. My partner ordered Martin's Breakfast Burrito, and I had the huevos rancheros. Both were fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were hoping for. Michael's Kitchen is only open Wednesday through Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., so plan accordingly. We arrived around 9:30 on a Sunday morning and had about a 30 minute wait. It was busy, but the wait was actually enjoyable because the restaurant has several little nooks filled with antiques and artwork by local artists. There was plenty to look at, and the time passed quickly. Taos has many wonderful mom and pop restaurants, but from what I learned during our visit, there are fewer locally owned restaurants serving traditional Spanish cuisine. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to try all of them, but I'm very happy we chose Michael's Kitchen. Ambiance was nice, we enjoyed the warm lighting and how it was inside an old historic catholic church. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable as well. I will say- the food was decent but it was nothing extravagant or to write home about like others have mentioned in the past. A lot of items on the menu have like one or two ingredients that I feel throw the dish off, so it was difficult deciding what to get there. We ordered the cornbread, mussels, the trout and the bison when we went for dinner. By far my biggest complaint with the whole experience was the fact that it is a cash only establishment, with no ATM even available on the property. You have to drive beforehand to the closest Allsups and withdraw whatever you feel will be the most for the check plus gratuity. This really limits what you can/can't get on the menu depending on how much cash you bring. I personally do not enjoy feeling limited by that or having to do math at the table in my head to make sure I got enough to cover it all. This also makes people look at the menu beforehand maybe online to get a good idea before driving to said gas station. They say on the website it's because "By forgoing transaction fees, we can better support our employees, serve organic food, and boost our local economy." but in reality I believe it's because they do not want to pay credit card fees and whatnot. Their sister restaurant Manzanita (which we also dined at) was not cash only though which was odd if they are related, so something isn't lining up at The Love Apple.
