My partner and I recently celebrated our anniversary and went to Taos, New Mexico to check it out as we had never been. This was a must stop recommended by many people so we were happy to secure a reservation and dine there. Ambiance was nice, we enjoyed the warm lighting and how it was inside an old historic catholic church. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable as well. I will say- the food was decent but it was nothing extravagant or to write home about like others have mentioned in the past. A lot of items on the menu have like one or two ingredients that I feel throw the dish off, so it was difficult deciding what to get there. We ordered the cornbread, mussels, the trout and the bison when we went for dinner. By far my biggest complaint with the whole experience was the fact that it is a cash only establishment, with no ATM even available on the property. You have to drive beforehand to the closest Allsups and withdraw whatever you feel will be the most for the check plus gratuity. This really limits what you can/can't get on the menu depending on how much cash you bring. I personally do not enjoy feeling limited by that or having to do math at the table in my head to make sure I got enough to cover it all. This also makes people look at the menu beforehand maybe online to get a good idea before driving to said gas station. They say on the website it's because "By forgoing transaction fees, we can better support our employees, serve organic food, and boost our local economy." but in reality I believe it's because they do not want to pay credit card fees and whatnot. Their sister restaurant Manzanita (which we also dined at) was not cash only though which was odd if they are related, so something isn't lining up at The Love Apple. We still had the best time with each others company which matters the most celebrating a special occasion, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to tell everyone that they gotta go there when they are in Taos. read more

Nice ambiance, but the food fell short. We chose this place as it was recommended by NM locals. The patio was nice, with fresh flowers and even privacy screens between some of the tables. I would give 5 stars to the ambiance. The food was just okay. The mixed greens in the salad were not fresh. I had to separate a few stale leaves. We all know this is quite common in mixed greens from a grocery bag, but I didn't expect to see it at a fancy restaurant like them. The mushroom appetizer and the taco main dish were both too greasy; see the spicy oil dripping from the food and pooling in the plate. Their wine list was super expensive, and most notable of all, this place is ALL CASH. So, for a table of four who orders wine, you'll need $300-400 in your pocket. read more

Our family has been going to Love Apple in Taos, NM for years. It is always a wonderful, special treat for us. We look forward to going everytime we are in Taos. Prior to our reservation this time - we were alerted by friends that the establishment is under new management (not sure if this is true or not - the internet says it is not) and their experience, food, and service was not the same (read not as wonderful) as in visits past. I always like to make my own determination. We had a larger group for our reservation. Unfortunately, when we arrived they did not have our reservation in the books. Turns out we were able to show them indeed we had made a reservation for eight and somehow it was lost on their end. Mistakes happen - we are all human - however the experience only got worse as the evening went on. It was a weekend night - there was not line out the door like usual, many tables were not occupied. I looked around and thought hmmm. This is unusual. Drink orders were wrong - with no accountability taken. The delicious tacos we have been accustomed to receiving over the years were not served that night...the tacos were cold, tortillas blew out immediately, and ingredients sadly missing with no explanation. Plates were handed to our friends and kids very hot to the touch with the explanation "I told you it was hot." Traditionally - plates were just placed in front of us gently and kindly. Kindness of staff was not seen by our group unfortunately. Everyone seemed to be having a hard night - which is totally fair - but it made us sad as we look forward to this neat place visiting about once a year. Instead of staying and having dessert like we always do - we left and got ice cream for sundaes at Cids. I am not sure we will go back to Love Apple the next time we are in town. We had an excellent meal at the Love Apple, one of our favorites in town. The food is interesting and the setting is atmospheric and beautiful in an old Adobe church. We started with the blue cheese, caramelized onion and apple quesadilla and cornbread muffins - the blue corn was earthy and delicious, as was peach butter. In contrast, the raw beet salad was not a hit with the table - a bit too plain and earthy. We also thoroughly enjoyed the seed and nut encrusted seabass with bok choy and cherry compute, grilled ruby red trout with quinoa - piñon fritter, and Swiss cheese polenta with oyster mushrooms. The Love Apple is the perfect place for a date or a girls night out. My best friend and I happened to find this place while planning our recent vacation to New Mexico and this place was a must try! By some miracle we got a table due to a last minute cancellation and took full advantage of this delightful experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by formal yet friendly staff. We enjoyed wine paired with a cheesy quesadilla to start. This quesadilla was filled with the finest cheeses and paired with an orange crème fraiche. The restaurant is located in a former chapel known as La Capilla de Nuestra Senora de Dolores, Ranchos de Taos and as the Chapel at Placita de Taos. The structure was built in the 1800s and in operation for about 100 years. We missed The Love Apple on our trip to Taos last year, so we're really glad that we were able to go with our friends this year for our sole meal out. It's fantastic. It's New Mexico, so, you know, everything is Land of Mañana style while you wait wait wait to make a reservation, be greeted, be seated, etc. It's a vibe, and once you're used to it, just enjoy the ride. You enter through a kitchen (yes) and a sheet/blanket (yes) and then it's all string lights and airiness and like you stepped into a Goop photoshoot. Charmed? Yes, we were. Love the two cocktails that we started with: riffs on a Negroni and a Manhattan. Simply wonderful. For starters, our table shared the corn bread, mushroom quesadilla, and warm spinach salad, all excellent. The blue corn bread basically tastes like a tortilla chip in muffin form--so good. The quesadilla was solid and we loved the dressing on the salad, which really hit the spot for greens. For dinner, we shared the tortilla soup and the polenta bolognese. The soup was out of this world--so packed with flavor--but the bolognese was disappointing. It did not taste like it had been simmering for long, and the meat was still in huge chunks, and overall, just not as high quality as everything else we had eaten. Our daughter got a very impressive kid's gnocchi that were borderline dumplings and she loved them. We would have likely landed on five stars had our dessert not been a disaster, which it unfortunately was. We got their special, the caramel mousse with a piñon brittle and everything about it was terrible. The mousse was barely cold and had almost no flavor--basically just whipped cream. The piñon brittle was overcooked and tasted like burnt nuts. Ugh, we were so upset because we had mostly loved everything else about the meal, and this was a huge final note to end on. We did try a taste of our pals' apple crisp, and that was great, as was our kiddo's pineapple sorbet, so we probably chose wrong, but still. Other that the bolognese and the caramel mousse, we did have such a positive experience here that we are landing on four stars. We have family visiting from out of town and they wanted to try The Love Apple because of the James Beard award nominations. Wow!! The food is amazing. I had the sea bass and it was delicious. Very light and flaky and the flavors were awesome. Family enjoyed the special Bison ribeye, the trout and the tamale. Absolutely amazing. We sat on the patio and it was great. Had reservations for last night after finding a spot over a week ago, so we looked forward to our celebration there. Unfortunately both entrees were least to say, disappointing. The sea bass was souped in sauce and not to the standard of a quality piece of fish and my husband's duck was how can I say horrible as it was souped in sauce to possibly cover up the quality of the duck. I am sad to say this is not a place I would recommend. I would love for the chefs to understand that meat and fish recipes should start with the quality of the product, no matter if it is considered "French". True, there are very few decent choices for a "dining experience" in Taos. So this place is one of very few options. The food was reasonably good. The portions are small, the prices are enormous, for what they serve. It's a place with a false sense of casual because they are so full of themselves that it reeks of self-centered privilege. We had reservations for 545 on the patio. Unfortunately we were in and rushed out in 50 minutes. After our appetizer, the waitress asked for our order. We said we would like to enjoy our drinks first.... And was told chef wanted all orders now. Our salad came before we were done with the muffins and our entree right after. We were not offered dessert. My husband asked for a light beer and got a dark, Guinness like stout. My service dog was questioned, which happens. The hostess explained that there was a strict "no dog" policy. And then sat a Puppy directly across from us ?!! Flies. Yes we're were on the patio, but the number of flies that we had to keep shooing off our food... was crazy. The whole reservation process made our visit difficult. I called 10 days in advance and left a message. And waited. And waited. 6 days later, my husband called them and received a call back - stating they had "tried" to call me. Nope. And she had a real attitude. Bottom line: we had dinner there with friends and none of us thought it was anything special. The gnocchi was not light and the trout was overdone and dry. No one was friendly upon our arrival. Our waitperson was outstanding, however. She was friendly, and made great drink suggestions. She was a bright spot. This is not our first visit to Taos. We come to Taos about 2X a year. We look forward to the food. I don't know if Love Apple is struggling since Covid, but it certainly isn't worth the reviews I've read in the past. Left Santa Fe for a road trip to Taos, New Mexico today. Dining and exploring a city we had not been to in 20+ years was the agenda. We searched for dining options and kept getting directed to Love Apple. It is located outside the city in a cute house with inside and outside dining in a beautiful setting. The setup here is stunning and very intimate while prices are reasonable. The decor and setup is great and very inviting. Giving their patrons an easy opportunity to get reservations was a nightmare. They don't answer their phone, you can't book on Open Table and they REFUSE CREDIT CARD PAYMENT. In today's economy, they only take cash and personal checks. NUTS! I guess it makes it easier to avoid taxes. The attitude here is summed up in one word: PRETENTIOUS. We arrived at 5:00, when they opened and was told that they were completely booked and would not be able to serve us. The hostess stated that if someone failed their reservation (how did they get reservations?), that she might be able to slide us in and they only accepted cash or checks. A gentleman behind us stated he had to come in person for a reservation two night ahead because no one answered the phone. At 5:15, 3 tables were seated with 20+ tables were completely vacant. We were finally seated. We ordered two cornbread muffins with flavored butter, roasted carrots with lavender honey, beet salad, and two tacos (chicken and pulled beef) with coconut creamed corn. The ambience was great, nice lighting and a pleasant setting. Presentation was spot on. The corn muffins lacked any real flavor. Our carrot presentation was beautiful. The carrots were not peeled and nicely roasted. It was not till we started eating them that we both noticed grains of dirt with each bite. The beet salad served on a beet puree with toasted bread was a home run. The beets contained a unique flavor and we could of ordered a second dish. The tacos were stuffed with chicken and beef and a orange slaw / crema fraiche topping. The chicken pieces were huge and again, lacked flavor. It was to much meat for the tortilla. The pulled braised beef had nice flavor and hit the spot. For the hype and reviews they have on the internet, I was not impressed and would not recommend. As we left, I glanced around the restaurant counting at least 15 empty tables. I understand it is a management issue to spread out patrons for the dinner service to work and not flood the kitchen. The attitude is what killed me and arrogance when serving the public. In today's economy, having patrons wanting to make reservations is a blessing. You need to be more accommodating and appreciative. I realize some organization make dining options difficult hoping to create exclusively with their business. Vegans: avoid. In 30 years of being plant based vegan, i have never had a waitress tell me they're too busy to accommodate me....until Love Apple. To say their menu options were limited is an understatement. The waitress recommended we eat radishes. She seemed fine with two people coming all the way to the restaurant and dining on just radishes. When asked if they cook make some of their entrees vegan (which should've been an easy ask), she told us no and that they ate too busy to accommodate us. I looked around at all the empty tables in astonishment. Needless to say, we promptly left and will never return. Before this, we had made reservations ahead of time to be seated at 7pm. Note: to make reservations one must leave a voicemail in hopes of having their call returned. They claim if the call isn't returned, it means they are too busy. No human being will speak with you- they're "too busy" apparently. When we arrived for our reservation, we had to wait well past the time of our reservation in a very tiny room that felt more like a closet, along with other very patient patrons awaiting their tables. I listened as each party was given a reason why their table wasn't ready on time. We eventually opted for indoor seating instead of the reserved outdoor table just because we didn't want to wait another hour. The entire restaurant staff seemed to believe they were extremely busy, yet we saw empty tables all over. I've waited tables in years past and I know what busy is- this was NOT busy. The ambience seemed forced and contrived. They played the typical music you'd expect in an establishment that wanted to appear stylish- nothing creative. The walls contained uninspiring framed copies of photos, such as a messy bed sheets (they liked it so much they had one large copy in the dining room and a smaller copy in the closet sized holding tank). The first time we attempted to visit this restaurant, we were staying across the alley from it in a bed & breakfast, just steps from it- yet they claimed they were too busy to accept a reservation or a walk in. We noticed the parking lot was not full and it did not seem busy. We ended up driving back another night from somewhere else, only to walk out disappointed and hungry. I'd recommend finding a more healthy and authentic place that doesn't try to present itself as hip or dynamic, which this place is neither. read more
