We had breakfast at Michael's Kitchen after it was recommended as one of the places to experience authentic Spanish cuisine in Taos, and I'm so glad we went. Our server, Chaniece, absolutely made the experience. I told her I wanted to order some of the most authentic Spanish dishes on the menu, and she came through perfectly. She was knowledgeable, friendly, attentive, and genuinely seemed excited to help us experience the restaurant. If you have questions about the menu, ask for her recommendations--you won't be disappointed. My partner ordered Martin's Breakfast Burrito, and I had the huevos rancheros. Both were fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were hoping for. Michael's Kitchen is only open Wednesday through Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., so plan accordingly. We arrived around 9:30 on a Sunday morning and had about a 30 minute wait. It was busy, but the wait was actually enjoyable because the restaurant has several little nooks filled with antiques and artwork by local artists. There was plenty to look at, and the time passed quickly. Taos has many wonderful mom and pop restaurants, but from what I learned during our visit, there are fewer locally owned restaurants serving traditional Spanish cuisine. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to try all of them, but I'm very happy we chose Michael's Kitchen. Strong 4 stars. Hubs had the steak and eggs. I had a Denver-style omelet. Steak was good but a little fatty, hubs cleared everything else off the plate. Omelet was tasty and filling- slices of American cheese vs shreds was a little unexpected. A cherry on top of the cottage cheese. Literally. That's weirdness yall. But check out the bakery case. 100% the best part of the meal was the pine cone cinnamon role. I'd come back just for that. read more

Popular locally owned cafe with a wide ranging menu. The place is busy and only open for breakfast and lunch. We had a little wait to be seated and a longer wait to order. Kind of understandable given how busy they were. The Spanish part of the menu features classic New Mexican food but you can also get less spicy options. We had the combo plate and the chile rellenos. Both had good heat. Between the two sauces the green seems hotter while the red is meaty. Both come with sopapillas that we love. read more

This place recommended to us several times and all the recommendations were right! Great food and great service. We started by tasting samples of the red, green and vegetarian chile. They were delicious! I had a hard shell ground beef taco. I noticed that that the meat was very tender and the taco was not greasy at all. My sister had hash browns with chile and cheddar cheese and added a fried egg. Hash browns were cooked well, nice and crispy. We had giant sopaipillas with honey butter to end our meal. In September, my wife, son and I spent 3 days in Taos. A friend of ours who used to live there highly recommended Michael's for breakfast, an institution in Taos. Sadly we ended going there on the day that we were departing on a Wednesday otherwise, we would have gone more than once. We arrived there at 9:30 am and we had to wait for 15 minutes for a table. Once we were seated, our server took our order promptly and the service was fast. My wife ordered a Bean and Cheese Christmas ( red and green Chile salsas) burrito, my son the Atole-Piñon Pancakes and I had the Blueberry Blintzes. The food is outstanding, their coffee is superb. On the way out my son bought one of their gigantic cinnamon roll for the road. read more

This place is busy, with what appeared to consist of both tourists and locals. It definitely has a country vibe with down-home service. The food prices were a little higher but if people are waiting to get in, it makes sense. The baked goods were also appealing at the country, baked daily. Michael's is a very great breakfast spot. I enjoyed the Martin's burrito; I had it Christmas (red and green chile). The chile was spicy which being native New Mexican I enjoyed because some places bland it down for tourists. The ambiance was very pleasant, the building itself is beautiful. considering it was a slow morning I was disappointed. my breakfast was barely warm. The syrup for the pancakes was ice cold which didn't help the warm pancakes. tortillas were cold. I asked for the corn beef hash to be crispy and it came out looking beyond crispy. Asked for crispy has browns which didn't help not happen. read more

He told us ran out of cheese & strawberry compote. When tried to order French toast he said, just told me had run out of it, which he hadn't. Then he argued & said he could write it down for me if I wanted. Told him not necessary but he may need to write list for himself because it's easy to forget being so busy. He said didn't need to. Then those sitting next to us looked at me while he told them what had run out of. But forgot to mention one item. So I interjected & said you forgot to tell them banana compote. I don't understand how this place had a line out the door. My wife and I were served corned beef hash that looked and tasted like canned dog food. I'm not even exaggerating - it had a distinct smell that I've only experienced while opening up a can of food for my dog. I gave it a shot and took a tiny bite, but it was inedible. We also witnessed a waitress pick up a piece of toilet paper off the ground and then immediately serve food without going to the restroom to wash her hands. The eggs and hash browns were edible, but I could've made far better eggs and hash browns at home. We also got an almond bear claw and a pecan sticky bun. Wow, this place gets busy around 10am! So glad we came in at 9. lol! Hubby and I ate here twice during our stay in Taos, and both times it was enjoyable. The first day, our service was stellar with a wonderful busser refilling our drinks often. Hubby loved the banana nut pancakes, while my Viva la French Toast was only okay. The next day, I devoured my cheese blintzes subbed with blueberry while hubs said the breakfast burrito was good but not stellar. I also had a side of hash browns with vegetarian green chile, and it was amazing! The red chile is cooked with meat and had kind of a Hormel flavor to it, so not my fave, but hubs enjoyed it. We took home a few pastries, and the texture of all was perfection! The giant sweet roll was crazy! I can't quite identify what they use instead of cinnamon, but it's nice and different. The more typical cinnamon roll was good, though I didn't care for the white icing. The apple fritter was still soft the next day and had a lovely flavor and texture. I am in Taos on a Sunday and while the church parking lots are empty. I could walk the streets in silence and most of the shops in town are closed or not yet opened. I found one place with a line Michael's kitchen . Opens at 7 am and has the feel of a good spot for lunch and breakfast .
