This little place is unassuming and tasty! Diverse menu, lightening fast service, but very small on the inside. It looked like they had a set up for some sort of outdoor dining but since it was February when I stopped by I didn't investigate that part any further. Don't let the unassuming exterior make you skip this place without a second thought. read more

I was looking for vegan options in town and saw several reviews of this place. Since their menu doesn't mention vegetarian/vegan I decided to give them a call. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating, but based on what I was told, some things other reviews mention as veg-friendly are not. I was told that both the red and green chilis as well as the rice has chicken stock. I was able to get vegetable fajitas with salsa, guacamole, corn tortillas, and beans. I'm bummed I didn't get to try the chilis and there wasn't much as far as vegan protein goes, but it was a decent meal. read more

My husband got a chimichanga with red and green sauce they ask I don't make their chili with pork or beef the waitress said it was chicken which isn't always easy to find! Two years ago after spending months in CO and my wife and I were driving home to Las Cruces. We stayed overnight in Taos and we were craving NM food and La Cueva was spot on. In September, we visited Taos again with our son and we decided to go back. From the restaurant outside the place looks like a dive. It is simple cafe with colorful decoration, and with real NM cuisine and good service. Most of the tables are on their enclosed patio. My wife ordered pollo en mole, my son chicken enchiladas, I had shrimp enchiladas. They have on the menu chips and salsa for $5.95, expensive when other restaurants serve them for free. read more

First culinary experience in Taos! My mouth is watering as I write this review. My friends and I walked around the street facade to find the main entrance, then we were guided to a separate building with additional seating. It felt exciting and welcoming. Customer service is excellent here. We each ordered a combination plate - enchiladas, chile relleno, and a taco. Little bit of everything (with Christmas chile of course) perfect for sampling the main menu items. The food tasted phenomenal, including their house made salsa. This is a 4/5 star review. La Cueva Cafe is beyond casual in decor, ambiance, and the family feel, but do not let that keep you from thoroughly enjoying the food. You will get great, fresh authentic food at an affordable price. I loved my chicken enchiladas with poblano mole. The mole was deep and rich and with a wonderful (and gentle) kick from the poblano. My wife wanted a veggie dish, and she got a terrific veggie enchilada with "Christmas" salsa. This is the only place, so far, to offer something beyond a cheese quesadilla or something similar when trying to go veggie. The mango chimichanga, for desert, would be at home on a fine dining menu. This place is little and kind of in a hard spot to find. It looks unassuming from the outside. Inside, the place is tiny and cozy, with a fireplace I believe. Not a lot of room to move around, but worked for dining alone. The service was good. The menu is interesting and varied, with different sauces and kinds of dishes. I was pleased with the interesting variety of vegetarian options. My food was really delicious. It totally hit the spot and my was worth my lunch stop on my drive. A cute little cafe with a few indoor tables and a patio space with multiple outdoor tables with large umbrella canopies! The servers were all super friendly and nice, and while the service was a little on the slower side, we did not mind too much as we were there to relax in good company. The best entree that we ordered was the shrimp enchiladas and the second best was the beef chimichanga plate! We also ordered the combination plate but felt that the other two were the stars of the show. A few things to be aware of, there is limited parking in the area due to ongoing construction work being done. Also, due to the nearby construction, there is debris and the lingering smell of heavy tar in the air while you are sitting in the outdoor patio area. In my opinion, the portions are on the smaller side and if you are super hungry you may want to consider ordering an appetizer + entree, or even an extra entree to split. Unfortunately, I have to detract a star because the iced Diet Coke that we ordered was flat and also had the aftertaste of soap. Hopefully this can be fixed in the future for other guests! read more

We came to Taos and searched Yelp for a good New Mexican restaurant and we found La Cueva. It is very small and quaint but don't judge it by its cover. At first I thought I was going to be disappointed with our decision because the salsa that came with the chips was tasteless and bland. (But my wife thought it was very good, go figure). I had the enchiladas and my friends had the chile relleno, the red and green sauces were excellent. Everything was very tasty and the service was the best we have received in New Mexico. This was a highlight and a fun spot. We had seats outside and the biggest thing to note was the quick and friendly service and the amazing flavors of the food. I haven't had chili rellanos before so was looking forward to this taste of New Mexico. It was an amazing flavor of just enough heat in the green sauce to make it interesting, but not enough to overpower combined with the cheese and perfect fry...not grease but crispy and crunchy. This place was highly suggested online and by some locals. It is near the downtown plaza and has tons of seating. They even grow some of their fruits and vegetables there! The service was quick and kind. I got the combination plate. The beef taco was moist and flavorful! Sadly the rest of the plate didn't meet the same standard. Great spot for lunch or dinner while in Taos. Searched for fire bread on Yelp and this place came up - though there was no fire bread, got to eat some yummy food. There is no reservation, so you do need to wait in line. And there is both indoor and shaded outdoor seating, but indoor seating is on the limited side. I tried the combo plate, which hit the spot. One modification made was I had mole sauce on the enchilada vs the red/green sauce for a slight up charge, but it was so worth it! Literally everything was so good! It's a cute little spot worth stopping in for a meal! The menu does have non-Mexican food for those looking a different option - so should meet the needs of groups with different cravings. read more

There are several different options of where to dine. You can eat inside in two different casitas or outside on a patio. I enjoyed trying to brush up on my Spanish to communicate with the wait staff. We had the beef nachos with were a great portion size for two people. They were like little tostadas. I had the chicken enchiladas with red. They were healthy and cooked well. Friendly service but flavors of food and freshness of ingredients were of elementary school lunchroom quality. Some dishes were very, very poorly flavored, as if someone with no prior cooking experience was "playing kitchen." My young daughter asked if a dish was spicy. The waiter assured her it was not and it was honestly an eight out of 10 spicy friend adult. And they only have wine margaritas, which I begrudgingly ordered and it's given me one of my most unforgettable memories of one of the worst margaritas I've ever had in my life. Plus the food took 30 minutes to come out for three people. The service was excellent--quick, friendly, and attentive. The staff checked in often to be sure we had everything we needed, which was refreshing since so many of the long-time favorite restaurants in Taos NM are struggling to find good staff right now it's nice to see that La Cueva clearly has that part figured out.The food came out hot, fresh, and full of flavor--I honestly have no recommendations for improvement, it was spot on! In two prior visits to Santa Fe, we didn't have any spare time for daytrips, but this fall we used the city as a base for a few of them. One was to Taos because, well, it seems that everyone says that you need to visit Taos if you're in northern New Mexico. The approach to and setting of Taos is stunningly beautiful, but the central part of town sure wasn't in October 2023. There was quite a bit of construction on both the main highway and in the plaza, and the traffic was horrible for a weekday in autumn. To say the least, we were quite disappointed by what we saw in the center of town. (The rest of the day--Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande Gorge and bridge, etc.--was pretty great.) But the modest La Cueva was a surprisingly good find. Just a block off the plaza, it featured a basic Mexican lunch menu, but for very reasonable prices, the food was plated beautifully and was remarkably fresh-tasting. The menu at lunchtime was quite limited, and and a chicken enchilada plate isn't exactly exciting, but this was easily better than I expected. The wife had frito pie, which neither of us had ever tried. That was excellent. The little outdoor seating area in back was very pleasant in October, given that a line of crawling vehicle traffic was only a few dozen yards away, and the service couldn't have been much friendlier. read more
