I checked out this restaurant on Yelp before going, and I thought I would not be impressed with the food based on the photos, so I was blown away when I got there and actually tried all the food. It was extremely flavorful and everything was really good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance in the restaurant is nice, a great place for groups or date night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We got 3 apps - the flatbread, burrata, and brussel sprouts. I enjoyed the flatbread, it is very cheesy so I felt I got the pizza experience even though I didn't get a pizza as my main. The burrata came with amazing bread, and the brussel sprouts were really good. I got pasta as the main and it was a lot of food. The menu claims all breads and pasta are made fresh daily, and I could believe it. Very good! Service was also good, better than I would expect!

Basta is a pizza and pasta restaurant located in downtown Iowa city on the U of I campus. It's a step up from casual but not fancy. You can find metered parking out front. Service is friendly and fast. I ordered the calamari, spaghetti bolognese and Bellini. Everything was delicious and fairly priced.

Dined here tonight for my oldest daughter's Sweet 16 Birthday dinner. We had the margarita pizza, chicken Parmesan, 5 cheese pasta, and chicken Alfredo. Everything was delicious.

Had the awesome surprise of finding out one of my favorite church members was in town. We immediately made plans to go to Basta as that's been a top recommendation since I've arrived in Iowa City. SERVICE: Our waitress was Tori. She was a sweetie! She had great recommendations. I really enjoyed the shrimp fettuccine. And, she checked on our table a lot. A very good waitress. FOOD: We ordered the calamari for our appetizer. The calamari comes out on a light bed of salad. You also get a nice charred lemon to squeeze over the calamari. For dipping sauces, you've got the tomato sauce and an aioli. I preferred the aioli for dipping my calamari. For the entree, we split the shrimp fettuccine. The shrimp fettuccine is delicious!! Fair warning, the dish comes with Calabrian chiles so if you don't like spice; I would ask for the chiles to be taken off. Also, Basta was kind enough to split our entree on arrival since both of us are nibblers. Great flavor with excellent portions. The shrimp in the pasta are jumbo shrimp. 10/10 recommendation. I will be back soon

Basta is a good spot on campus for some good italian food. I have only been here once, and very fortunate to be there on there patio as the weather gave me the chance. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The patio is really cute. I am sure even cuter with flowers out as weather gets warmer.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My server was very pleasent and the food was good. I would like to try more of their dishes. It seems to be a solid choice. Go get your grub on!!!

The pasta and pizza here are both so good! Recommend getting the meatballs as an appetizer. Am planning to come back to try the other dishes they have on the menu!

I ordered the NY strip along with the 4-cheese ravioli topped with pesto on a bed of pesto and oil, plus potatoes. The flavor combination was something I've honestly never had before -- rich, unique, and absolutely amazing. I was shocked at how well everything balanced. For the appetizer, I went with the roasted Brussels sprouts, and they were a 9.5/10. Perfect texture, and the sauce was unreal -- I think Dijon-based -- mixed with shredded carrots. Whatever it was, it worked. The Old Fashioned was also standout -- easily top 5-7 I've ever had. What really elevated the experience was the service. I stopped one of the chefs, and he took five minutes to answer questions and give detailed recommendations. Everyone I interacted with was welcoming and attentive. The atmosphere had the feel of a comfortable, modest neighborhood spot, but the food and execution were at a 4.5-star level. Not a single misstep all night -- I'll definitely be back if I find myself in Iowa again.

Basta is my go to anytime I'm looking for a nice meal around the ped mall. I'm probably a smidge biased as we've had a few "family dinner" Yelp events with Jack here so it holds a special place in my heart. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a beautiful space with delicious food that isn't too pretentious that you couldn't just drop in from the street as I'm prone to.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Get pizza. Get dessert. Have a nice cocktail. You won't be disappointed.

Basta is one of those spots where every dish hits. The food is so good you'll want to order the entire menu, and the happy hour cocktails are bright, balanced, and genuinely fun. Simple take: next‑level flavors, zero misses.

Basta is always a hit when looking for something a bit more elevated that won't break the bank in Iowa City. I've ordered a handful of things in the menu over, and the sausage orecchiette is hands down the best entree on the menu!! The spaghetti is good and noodles taste homemade but the meatballs were a bit underwhelming; however, you won't find something bad on the menu. They have great drinks from the bar, and a great dessert menu (highly recommend the tiramisu). The staff are always very friendly and helpful when deciding what meal to get. Food tends to always be delivered to your table quickly. Only negative thing I have to say is that it can get loud in here sometimes, but the food is well worth it.

Arancini bolognese from the brunch menu

We had brunch this weekend at Basta and were very pleased with our whole experience. My wife and I started with peach Bellinis which were on point. For my meal I tried the Arancini bolognese; the pork ragù is flavorful with a nice kick, the eggs and hollandaise are good as well but the real star of this dish is the crispy risotto. The breakfast potatoes with garlic aioli was fantastic too. While I really enjoyed my meal, the one bite I tried of my daughters Nutella french toast really stuck with me and I want to get it next time. Our server was great and so was the manager who I happened to ask a bunch of questions on the menu. It was too hot for us to sit outside but their patio seems very nice and we'd enjoy that next time. Overall probably my favorite place in Iowa City so far.

The Hugo Spritz initially just tasted like tonic water, but we let our server know and Harry kindly brought us a replacement that was much better. For food, we tried the Margherita pizza and the Ellie (caramelized onion, blue cheese, and onion). Both were decent. Seems like fresh ingredients! I am personally not a fan of blue cheese usually, but I did enjoy it. Service was super efficient--felt a little rushed but they are typically very busy on a Friday night. Dessert was a nice finish: the raspberry ice cream tasted like real raspberries, and the shortbread was decent. Only downside? Lots of flies--we found ourselves swatting them away throughout the meal. Overall, a good experience and we will be back!

My wife isn't a big pizza fan, so anytime we have an opportunity to pick pizza as a dine-in dinner, and blame it on others, I'm going to take that opportunity. And she loved it too. First for the appetizer, we chose the onion rings. They were really onion straws (remember the old Damon's BBQ Onion Loaf? They're like that!). They were great. A bit messy, but great. For pizza, we went with the thin crust Union Jack, which is basically deluxe: Italian sausage, pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, red bell pepper. I loved the way they cut the peppers super thin, and the pizza was fantastic. I'd love to try the other crust/styles as well someday, but the table voted and that's what we landed on. Six stars for the pizza. The restaurant is bigger than it looks, and was very crowded on an early Saturday evening. It is obviously popular, as the inside dining was full and the outdoor patio was nearly as popular. Service was very friendly, and helped us navigate the crust decision. The only downside - and I didn't test them on it - is the 'only one refill' rule on their fountain drinks. I hate this rule almost as much as Mexican restaurants charging for the second basket of chips and salsa. It just makes no sense to me. But I don't think I even finished the first one, so I have no idea if they would have actually charged me if I had !GASP! asked for a third drink. This is a top ranking for me - loved it, will return next time I'm in town. If you're looking for a great pizza place with other dishes on the menu, Wig & Pen is a great choice!

The spacious restaurant with an old school charm has plenty of rooms for the crowds that seek out their delicious pizza. Another table next to us ordered the thin crust, so I'm guessing that's as good as the huge pie we got. But if you like Chicago style, you must try the Wig and Pen-this is their original location I went to in the 90s, and I'm happy to say it's just as good as I remembered-every year when I return to visit family. It's either here or Sam's Pizza for the colossal cheese filled loveliness.
