In November we upgraded an older entertainment system; internet service, television and Sonos, and turned to Bay Area Smart Home to do the work based on strong Yelp reviews. Alex, the owner was responsive, explained the upgrade and sold us on his system. Alex and his tech installed the system, did a great job of training us and came out the first time to make some corrections on the Sonos system. After the upgrade our laptop wouldn't connect to our home internet. Once our computer person spoke to Alex it was a matter of Alex resetting a password which he did. Several weeks ago we contacted him because HBO Max and Hulu are not working on the main television. He mentioned a couple of fixes (none worked) then said the Roku he installed was most likely at fault and he would send a tech. It's going on two weeks and we've not heard from him. My gut feeling is Alex takes on more jobs than he is able to handle so follow up is low on the priority list. Sadly, we paid our bill in full which was in the mid 5k range. Maybe this isn't a lot for most people but it is for us - maybe we were suckers to begin with. Either way, we'd like to get the job completed but sadly have no recourse as our bill has been paid. At this point we are going on our 3rd month of dealing with an incomplete job. I hope that they make good on their word and fix the system. In summary, Alex does a great job installing and training but follow up leaves a lot to be desired. read more

I'm very happy with my experience at Bay Area Smart Home. I hired them to take down a 65" OLED from a wall mount at my rental property, transport it to my new residence, mount it, and also hook up a sonos surround sound system and sub woofer. Although it took about a month for the sonos products to arrive (Not Alex's fault, the equipment was on backorder), Alex fully accommodated me by lending me a receiver while I waited so that I could use my surround sound system in my new house. Bay Area Smart Home did a great job mounting our TV and installing two outdoor security cameras, sconces, smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, and a smart lock on our front door. Alex was really responsive and easy to communicate with when providing a cost estimate (really competitive and reasonable prices!) and scheduling the install. And then the two guys who completed the install, both named DJ, were super friendly and helpful. They even helped us move our Peloton bike from the garage into the house! What really stands out is that after the install, we realized the dead bolt on the smart lock kept getting blocked. Alex installed Nest security cameras in our home and did a great job. He is very pleasant to work with, deeply knowledgable about the technology, provides solid recommendations, and charges fair prices. He handles all kinds of home automation and home video/audio installation. I decided I preferred to use either Google-owned Nest or Amazon-owned Ring cameras with cloud-based recording rather than the DVR-based systems that do local recording. The local systems, which are the usual options provided by security camera contractors, use security cameras mostly made by the same Chinese-owned company (Hikvision) and sold under various brand names, which are banned for use by the U.S. government for the same reasons they have banned Huawei from 5G cellphone systems. While not concerned about the Chinese government spying on me (!), the makers and users of home hardware like routers and DVRs often fail to keep them updated against hackers, leaving users vulnerable to cyber attack (and risk of financial loss or identity theft). I have more confidence in Google's and Amazon's cutting-edge cybersecurity teams than in a little-known hardware maker. (Note: there's a higher ongoing cost to this method as you have to pay for cloud storage.) The first security contractor I met with never called me back after he found out I wanted to use Nest or Ring rather than Hikvision, so I called Bay Area Smart Home. Alex advised that I would be happier with Nest rather than Ring, based on his experience. We discussed various wiring options. My original plan was to use power-over-ethernet (running power over the same cable that connects the camera). Alex was fully willing to do this, but explained this would require the extra cost of using an electrician to run the wiring. He instead recommended using the conventional plug-in version of the cameras connected to nearby existing plugs and using Wifi. He also recommended the amount of additional internet bandwidth I'd need. Alex provided the cameras at the same cost offered by Amazon and Best Buy. He and a colleague arrived on time and did a good job with the installation. He also worked through the Wifi problems that are common in such setups. (That's why I originally planned to use ethernet connections). The system works well. Alex was available over email for follow-up questions. Definitely recommended. read more

I contacted several home automation companies on yelp and I'm so glad we went with Alex. He responded very quickly and we met that same day to discuss the goals of this project: increase security at our new home and add some fun gadgets. By that point I'd done months of research about smart home tech and I was becoming overwhelmed by all of the options. Initially I went to a big box store seeking help, but the employees were all shocked by how much I already knew and couldn't answer my questions. Working with Alex relieved a lot of my stress, worry, and overwhelm. Alex is a wealth of knowledge so we were able to come up with a plan pretty quickly. Given that we were at the tail end of our renovation, we had a vague timeline for installation and Alex was very flexible. If questions or worries arose, I was able to quickly reach Alex by calling or texting. When install day arrived, Alex arrived with his partner and they got busy. We tried to stay out of their way, but we were also very curious and excited about it all. Alex supplies all of the electronics for a competitive price and if you prefer to buy them (which I didn't), he'll install everything. We had some issues with our wireless router that actually turned out to be an issue with my cellphone, but this slowed the install process quite a bit. Alex wound up being at our home until late that night, but he was determined to complete the project and my husband and I are very appreciative of his diligence. We now have exterior Arlo cameras (solar powered and battery operated) with siren, a Ring doorbell, an August smart lock, kitchen cabinet lighting using Hue light strips, and Google home. Alex integrated all of this with our Lutron lighting and recessed speakers. It's so great and incredibly convenient to have this smart home technology! And he's available for 30 days after installation to answer any questions and resolve any issues. We've actually called him a couple times since that initial installation to purchase a couple more items. My one regret is that we did not find Alex earlier. Our home is new construction and had Alex been involved earlier, we could have improved how we wired our home.
