This smog shop has changed ownership several times over the last few years. The website used to give you a coupon for a reduced price for a smog check. The website doesn't seem to be working correctly, currently, but I let the new owner know. I wasn't even able to make an appointment online, but I did call and the new owner said I could come in right away. He did my smog check fairly quickly. It's a little bit pricier than I paid previously. I've taken four of my vehicles here in the past. read more

I went here with my family today. My son turned 9 yesterday, and I felt like we all aged while we were here. My wife was only helped when we were about to leave. I was initially going to give no more than 2 stars. My wife had an appointment for 3:30, but that didn't mean much. We were ignored at first and left waiting. The smog check wasn't done until after 4. The website might need to be updated. Two phone numbers are listed, and only the one at the bottom was helpful when my wife called. The test-only station is open 7 days a week from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. An inspector in an orange Texas T-shirt wasn't wearing a face mask. He also saw us early on, but didn't say anything. At about 4, he wandered away (he may have been off at that time). While we were waiting, a man in a black BMW suddenly appeared. He cut in front of us, but it wasn't intentional (another man didn't realize at first that we were ahead of him too). He was around for half an hour (the car title had to be researched, and there seemed to be a delay because the hood had been salvaged). The area is tight (my wife mentioned how the website makes it look larger than it really is), and it was tricky for a few drivers to exit. I groaned when there was suddenly a line of cars, but half of them were there for the auto shop. Our inspector was a tall and attractive blonde (I'm not really into tattoos, but hers were kind of cool). I thought that she was a customer when we arrived (her midriff was showing, and she was sort of dressed like she was going to go climbing). I also wasn't impressed with her until later (she came across as grumpy initially, and she let her face mask fall to the ground twice). Another inspector who helped us was on crutches at first (I couldn't help but laugh a little, and I thought that he was a customer when we arrived too). After we were settled, he went somewhere to smoke. The total was $58. That's a good price (the smog station that my wife went to in 2017 charged $60). The mechanics at the auto shop were casual, but they got the job done (a woman had her car wheels replaced in about 15 minutes). A man who looked like a grungy Joey Chestnut was around for about 5 minutes. He received good service from a man who may have been a manager. Rose Garden is next door (on the left). I thought about getting something to eat. Lol. Because of the pandemic (I think), an inside area was chained off. A bench was also blocked off by a car and a platform truck. There's a waiting area on the left, though, that features 3 chairs (the area is somewhat elevated and nice). The woman was kind and thorough when helping my wife (she even provided some info regarding the DMV). She also showed some knowledge and diligence when helping the man who inadvertently cut in front of us. All the inspectors were kind of slow. Overall, the level of care for customers and their time wasn't there. When I used them two years ago, they were very knowledgeable and reasonable. However, they are no longer in business.

This was my first time here. I had an appointment for 2pm but they were running behind schedule. If you don't want to wait I would recommend calling in advance to see if they are busy. However even with the wait they were pretty quick, some slower than others. And even though I had a 20% discount for booking online they applied a better discount for full service, certificate, and taxes for a much cheaper price out the door. I searched online and found this Star Smog Certified business and booked a Saturday appointment recently. The shop is a small 1 garage unit, all the way in the back of a tire shop called, "Bay Area Tire & Wheels". This is where you should turn in, since there's no actual sign with the name of the smog shop outside. After using the Yelp coupon, the total for my smog check was $35. Business is family-owned, they provide quick service and they have a sweet and friendly dog whom I got to pet while I waited for my smog check. read more

The new owner absolutely earned this 1-star. Called in to see if they were available for a drop-in, was told to schedule the appointment online. Cool, I scheduled the appointment online at 9:44am and got the confirmation email for a next day 10am appointment. I showed up but Jason didn't. I needed a last minute smog check test so I stopped by this shop last night. I called in for a quote prior to visiting and the technician said 49.99, which was cheaper than almost all the other places I've called. I went in around 4:30pm, I I did have to wait a bit but I personally didn't mind. Unfortunately the computer wasn't reading my car; which I understand, my car is pretty old (Honda Civic, 1999). The technician did about 3 test runs and offered that he could either call it quits or he could restart the system and see if that would work. I was already there so I asked if he could try one more time. He ended up finding out that I had a bad fuse (which was connected to my interior lights), replaced it, and the rest went fine afterwards! Even though I did have to wait a bit for the test, I really respect this business. It was already 6:20 (past their hours) but the technician still serviced me and offered to try one last thing before giving up. The total ended up being $58 I believe. I wasn't charged for the fuse--I think especially now businesses are having a hard time handling traffic because of COVID, so people should already expect services to be a bit slower than typical. Again, I respect this business and do plan on visiting for future smog checks! I did feel bad for having the technician work over their servicing hours but everything ended up going well. read more

We scheduled an appointment this morning at 11:00am. We arrived early at night 10:30am and found the shop still closed. On Yelp, they were supposed to be open by 8:30am. We asked the people at the tire-shop out front what was going on, and was told that the smog place should be open soon. So, we waited till 11:02am before calling the number provided to my phone via text confirmation, the phone rang and rang without anyone picking up. 10 minutes later, we called the number provided by Yelp. Again we got no answer except it asked me for a subscriber number. We then wrote an email to the email address provided in the text confirmation of 11:00am. By now it was past 11:30am. We left and got smog test at a nearby STAR smog station. We drove by after my STAR smog certification, at around 12:15pm and saw the door to the shop open and there was a white truck parked outside. We don't think any shop should be taking appointments without any intent of keeping them. read more

I appreciate the business owner's prompt response to my review in which he advised that he closed early (3pm) because there were no appointments lined up. That on its own would make perfect sense IF the business website did not state - no less than six times - that appointments are not needed/walk-ins are welcome. I went to Bayfair Star Smog with a coupon that they sent through the mail for a $29.75 smog + $8.25 certificate. Upon arriving, I'm told that there is an extra $10 charge for the "Star" requirement. The tech highlighted the portion on the ad which of course was in really small type. Although I shrugged it off, I think it's BS, and just a way to charge more for doing the same thing. They really should honor the coupon, or put in BIG font, that "Star" smog costs an extra $10. Although everything else went well, and the vehicle was done on time, I'm not going back. Their location is conveniently near my house, which was great. When I pulled in, they were able to take my car in right away. The owner, Jason, was very helpful and professional. The smog check is $70, but make sure you mention Yelp and he will give you $20 off. Good deal. The smog check took about 20 minutes, very friendly service, but it took him a while to get my tailpipe reading as he wasn't sticking it in there far enough, at first, he even told me I had an exhaust leak, must have been his first time with a car like mine. Luckily I have a little car experience myself and told him to stick the sensor in deeper, after that it went fast. I told this story to some of my friends and co-workers and sat on this for a few weeks before deciding if I wanted to post a review about it. The guy who worked here had this cranky attitude that can be comical as he interacts with the near by tire shop and mechanics. You can hear the other guys sorta cursing him out under their breath. I came here because it was one of the few smog shops opened on a Sunday. He cracked some jokes my way and it sounds like he is doing it out of boredom but at the end, I was stunned at the clear racist joke he tried to peddle my way. I forgot I had to run my car longer after clearing my check engine light. My O2 sensor wasn't ready which I should of checked before going in. I gave him my credit card to pay for my failed smog and he tells me "This isn't you!" At that time, I wasn't even thinking he was trying to make a racist joke because i was still thinking to myself about forgetting to checking my sensor in the first place so I ask him what do you mean? He then repeats and adds "Chinese people don't have this name," referring to my first name Chris. They have names like ching chong dong pong etc. At that moment, I was shocked and replied back That is my name, I am American, Are you $&@ken serious? And he still replied this is not your name in a regretting voice and silence. Sir, you can continue to behave that way if you still want to but not everyone will act as civil as I did and that's something to keep in mind for the next time you try something like that. Just before writing this review, looking at the pictures wtf happened to the waiting area. It looks 10x better than when I got my car smog check'd. The waiting area looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years and looks hella run down. As for the inspection it didn't take very long. I presented a coupon and was then was promptly rung up. One thing I hate about about randos working on my car is when they slam my god damn hood. Have some fucking respect. I try to take care of my car as much as possible and don't take kindly to you mistreating it. Aside, watch out for the workers, just as I was leaving the dude that did my smog check probably not much older than 21 or 22 at max and two of dudes catting off in the adjacent tire shop sparked up a blunt. I'm giving them two more stars since my last review. The owner messaged me and tried to coordinate with the tech (who overslept...and I'm not upset about that- it happens). It was suggested I come back a bit later and they would take care of me. I came back, and the situation didn't look any better. The owner messaged me and continued to try to make it better. Two hours after my appointment (and I had already visited another smog test), I received a phone call from the manager who was profusely apologizing for how it went down. It doesn't seem like my experience is the norm based on everyone else's reviews, but that's what happened to me. I enjoy the fact that they are open on the weekends, even Sunday. It allows busy people to get things done. The first time I came, the man told me to come back because there were two cars in front of me. He didn't even ask me to wait, or leave my car around, but to just come back. Didn't take down my info or anything, so what if he forgot about me when I did come back? Right away I was turned off by the customer service. I decided not to wait and come back another day. I came back on Monday and the young man told me to simply give him a few minutes and pull over. Fast service, very personable and friendly. I booked online, and also the AD said 1996-1999 vehicles $49 + certificate fee, and you also get a free gift. I did not receive a free gift, and they did not honor the $49. I ended up paying $88. I won't patronize them again. The person doing the smog very unprofessional, running back and forth to the grill cooking. What kind of place is this? Not very friendly either.
