I messed up on my registration and failed to notice that I required a SMOG check. Imagine my surprise when I opened the letter from the DMV expecting to see my registration, but only seeing a notice. I read the DMV letter in December. My registration expires December. Enter panic mode. I started looking for places to do my SMOG test. I found this place. I called and was informed I could do a walk-in, which I opted for. I asked how long it would take, and the man quoted me 10 minutes. I waited there and watched the process since I've never had to do it before and was curious. I watched him hook up the machine to my car, but became distracted with a call. By the time I hung up 10 minutes later, my car was done and PASSED (anxiety levels declined). I paid in cash since I know a lot of small businesses prefer it, and I'm considerate of that. I shopped around for a smog to get my registration renewed. Oddly, I bought the car in 2016 and DMV never requested one until this renewal. I was under the impression they no longer required smogs. A quick Google search returned this place as the first in my area. Checked out their website, http://smogcheck4dmv.com/location.html but it doesn't show any pricing. Saw the $30 discount off their website, http://smogcheck4dmv.com/coupon.html. Called the shop at (510) 499-9749 and ask for pricing. The person said the price depends on the type of vehicle and ask me to come in first. I pushed for what's their regular price and he said $60. I asked if the web coupon is applicable on top and he said NO. As you can see the web coupon is pretty clear. In fact, it states in BOLDED text "NO NEED TO PRINT, JUST MENTION WEBSITE". I politely declined stating that it was false advertising. He claimed that $60 was already discounted price to what they have "posted" on their wall in the shop (not on their website) and I can't apply discount on top of another discount. Fair warning to others who might not know: If your service engine light comes on, you will not pass Smog, so get it checked out first, fix the issue, then get the smog test. My review likely would have been higher if they had declined to test my vehicle or mentioned that it wouldn't/likely wouldn't pass until the light was off. Could have saved us all time. I was initially quoted $139.75 for a 2000 E-350 van. I was told that included an extra $10 for the Star Smog certificate. Their displayed prices need updating/review. When I did not pass, they took off the extra $10 charge and told me they would just charge $10 when I returned after having the light/issue fixed. Decided to just have my mechanic fix the issue, do the smog test himself (at a much lower price I now know) and avoided any potential driving back and forth between the two stations if it didn't pass. read more

It seemed expensive to me but, nevertheless, I still paid and 15 minutes later, my car was ready, and I left. However, when I came home, I looked through my paperwork and found the previous bill for the smog test at that location. It was $68. Conclusion: two years later, the price had increased of $30!!! Wow!! I was in a hurry and wanted this smog test to be done so I didn't look any further. I should have called other businesses to compare the prices before bringing my car there. I found out later that $68-$70 is the regular price for a smog test. I don't understand why mechanics can charge whatever they want. The next day, I went back to show my previous bill and ask for a refund of the difference. Located behind the Burger King next to the San Leandro Costco. It was a seamless process to get tested at a STAR certified smog center (took about 15-20 minutes total). They currently have a coupon advertised on their website for $30 off, but I also called to see if they could honor a discounted price from another shop and Richard was kind enough and able to provide the match. I brought my car in today and there was no wait (probably because it has been raining). Giovanne was the service technician who administered the test for my car and was helpful and responsive. Thumbs up from me, to finding and trying a new local smog check business. They also seem to provide some other minor DMV services too (registration etc). 3+ years later, I'm still a happy customer. It's straight forward process for smog tests. I show up hoping they're not busy, wait for them do their thing, and after 5 minutes, I pay and leave. It's easy as that. I recommend going on Groupon to see their smog test deal. If you buy one, it'll say to call for an appointment. I don't - I show up hoping they won't tell me to make an appointment first. I make sure to come on a "dead" day and hour (eg. Monday at 2p) to reduce my chances of waiting long.
