WHERE: 76 Gas Station corner of E.14th Street & 150th Avenue. SERVICE: I visited Technician, Mr So Nguyen, for my Smog Check. Didn't pass 1st time, but got print out of what caused the "fail". Fixed the "fail" at Larry's Automotive (Castro Valley), arrived here just around 5:15pm weekday & was done just before 6pm. Quick & prompt service here. Totally bogus. 76 Smog employee tried to charge me an additional $38, fortunately knocked it down to $18 because I brought in my truck and threatened to leave and demanded a refund. I would strongly recommend this smog check location to anyone. I went there in the evening (it looked like they had just closed), but they were really nice and agreed to do smog check despite I arrived a little late. Didn't have to wait for more than 15 mins for entire test. Staffs were very friendly and answered general/maintenance questions about my car while I waited. Service was quick and easy. Steve was great to work with, even though I was a little late for my appointment. However, I have to deduct one star because of the pricing. I find it a little sketchy that I called, told them my year/model, and was told that it would cost $60 for a smog test (plus ~$8 for a certificate). I knew they had a $35 offer on Groupon so I said no thanks (intending to purchase the offer on Groupon). Before I could hang up, the owner asked what the "other place I found" was charging. I said $35, and he then magically reduced the price to $35, no questions asked. This isn't really a big deal, but just be aware, because if a customer doesn't know about online deals, they are going to try to charge nearly double for a simple smog test. These prices are clearly not set in stone and they will charge you whatever they want. read more

This was a painless and affordable option for smog when I realized I needed to get it done ASAP. Bought a yelp coupon for this place for only $30 towards the smog. At the facility, I only had to pay an additional $8.25 for the smog certificate = $38.25 for smog this year!! And best of all, there was no line and I was out within 10 minutes. The attendant doing the actual smog test is very nice . The owner thought I should get his permission to get a coupon. When I called he told me smog test was $60 so I got a coupon on yelp for $29. When I arrived he wanted me to pay $25 more . Apparently the $25 is for the certification . He never mentioned a certification when I called . After arguing with him for a few minutes he finally gave in and honored the coupon . I recommend that you don't come here or if you do- don't buy the coupon . read more

The actual test was quick, 15 min, and the technician was friendly. The problem is the pricing information is sketchy and misleading. In the beginning I called the business, I asked for the price to smog check my Camry, they quoted $50. I had seen the Yelp coupon of $30 for $75 value towards a smog check. I had also seen Groupon coupon for $35 for $90 smog check. Since my smog check was $50 I figured I would use the Yelp coupon and save $20 off the $50 smog check. Wrong! When I got there, I was told that if you use a coupon, the price of the smog check is $89.95. I informed the tech guy that I should have been informed that the $50 quoted price on the phone was a Special and could not be combined with a coupon. He told me to call the owner, who was the guy that quoted the $50 originally. Long story short, I convinced the owner to take the Yelp coupon and I would give him an extra $5 instead, as if I had purchased the $90 value Groupon coupon. When the technician wrote up the bill I was informed that there is an additional $8.25 certificate fee as well, which I'm sure surprises many people. The tech said it goes to the state so there's nothing to be done about that. I see now that there have been other people with similar stories as mine. The owner claimed on the phone with me that I was the first person to be confused by his pricing, maybe but it doesn't ring true. As a business, I don't think you get or keep customers if you are not straight and clear on your pricing. Nobody wants to take time out to drive to a business and then find out they didn't get the price they expected. read more

Need Improvement: The testing area looks dilapidated and the service doesn't seem that welcome. The worker changed my car seat position and never set it back. It felt awkward when I came into my car. The overwhelming stars on Yelp were probably from the previous owner. I don't thing the place deserve 4.5 stars right now. Good: Service was quick. I'm glad that I found this new place where I will be coming here for now on for a smog test. I would recommend my friends and family to this place for a smog test.
