I've been bringing my car there for the last 9 years. They're awesome, consistant service, transparent pricing , and super friendly at the front desk. I think the prices are fair, they don't overdo what does not need to be done/ push for more which I appreciate. I recently got my tires replaced there, was in a bit of a rush and the tires were delayed, but they kept me well informed on progress during the process, and were able to turn around the install very quickly once the tires got delivered to them. They also always give the car a quick rinse/wash upon returning it, and I never have to worry about removing stuff from the car when dropping it off there. Really good shop, can't recommend enough! Did not fully fix our car but charged us $700 anyway. At pickup they said "we fixed something. There are two other things very wrong that you should also fix ASAP (for $2300). When I asked "why didn't you just fix all 3 things?" they said they would need to order the parts. He furthered, "we thought we fixed it then when we test drove it, there were more problems." I just wanted my car fully fixed, not whatever fixed that they had parts for! Also how do I know the first thing was even broken (and worth paying $700 for)? From where I sit, it's still making the bad noise we brought it in for and it's still not safe/drivable. read more

Yelpers, be forewarned... The labor rate have now gone up by about 35%-50% unfortunately from only 2 years ago. I still love their work but the labor rate is now almost as high if not equal to the dealer's rate. Very unfortunate to set his happen. At the new higher rate, the dealer might not be a bad option depending on the work needed. read more

Be advised before you come here! I was having an issue with four of my hazardous dash lights staying on. First thing I did was take my car to Auto Zone for a reading. I received a printout, then notified Bay Auto Center. I let them know, I wanted to bring my car in, so I did, and this was back in February of this year. They charged me five hundred and something dollars for the diagnostic test, and the labor of replacing the coils, which I agreed too. Now here it is May, and the exact same thing re-occurs again. So, I repeated my step from previously, when the four hazard signals popped up on the dash. I went to Auto Zone for a reading, in which I received a printout. I called the Auto Center to let them know my situation. They agreed I could bring my vehicle back in to see what's wrong. Note, my Accord was almost "spotless clean" when I brought the car in on that Wednesday morning. They ended keeping the car to Friday, in which they did fix the hazards lights with a spark plug. Ricky told me that they have every right to charge me for more then just the spark plug, but they won't do it this time. I'm like really??? It was the exact same issue I had the last time you guys fixed it a few moths back. Also, here's the kicker. The whole bottom of the vehicle: the tires, rims, and doors was completely covered in wet cement type dirt. I saw that when I was picking my sedan up, but I was very fatigued at the time and let it slide. What a mistake. It took me hours to try and scrub that stuff off that following Saturday. over the years I've been coming to their shop, and they have gotten worst and worst. No regards at all for my time or my vehicle. I'm a believer. Won't be doing business with you guy's anymore. read more

Initially, I went to their shop first time based by Yelp review, plus it was relatively close to home. And I had no previous experience with no mechanic shops. To be honest I was afraid that I'll be taken advantage of just because of not knowing too much. First time I went there last year. After my second visit, I started to have doubts about their sincerity and professionalism about the work. I was told I have cupping tires and that means my cars struts and shocks need to be replaced. I mean, I know one or two about cars, and I knew that time that my tires are not cupping. Later on I learned from another mechanic, that the tires are definitely not cupping and struts possibly could be replaced in 6 months. Also their quote was $1300 for parts (saying special order), not including the labor. I googled and found OEM parts for about total $700 if I would have ordered them from Ford store. That's when I really started to question if they really have my best interest in mind or they just trying to make money, doesn't the mechanic shop actually get better deals for OEM parts than a private party. Also that time they left a tool under my hood. They called me next day and I had to go back, so they could retrieve their tool. Not that I was expecting compensation, but perhaps future visit discount or smt but well that's why there is less than 5 stars, because I got nothing. Also, diagnosing my engine light for $105 seemed excessive, just to let me know what the code means and what it could possibly be but not certain what it really is. After that, I bought the diagnostic machine (OBD II reader) Amazon for $40 and the best dollars I have ever spent. I did go in for the 3rd time, with my other car but it was my last for sure. I have to admit, I went because of the location convenience and I was too lazy to research for another place and I really needed the service do be done. Few days prior to that I had changed the cabin air filter and the engine air filter by myself with the Youtube help. Super simple and easy, and I ordered the genuine Motorcraft pieces from Amazon, totaling $25. They wanted to charge me $100 together with the labor (materials $48). I declined since I just had changed it myself. So from now on, I will only go for solid 5 star auto shops and hopefully find my place, where I can take my growing car "collection". read more

This shop has worked on an older family car, a 1995 Mercedes S320 and they have seemed to do a good job, fairly responsive and most importantly have been better deals than going directly to a Mercedes Dealer. I had a check-engine light on and the engine was making a noise, and they took the time to diagnose the problem and I didn't feel like I was getting an upsell for unnecessary stuff. I've seen a wide range of cars serviced there and everytime I go it seems busy, which is like the equivalent of whether you'd go to a restaurant which didn't have any tables seated. We were able to pull off the freeway and to our luck saw Bay Auto Center Mechanical Service. The staff was very kind and helpful. To make a long story short, I've been coming here for years for my different mechanical needs. They have always got the job done at a somewhat reasonable price, until this particular day. The lock in my 2004 trunk was worn out, and I needed a replacement. The owner Andy told me that it would cost me $76.00 to order the lock, and an additional $66.00 for labor to put it on, plus tax of course. I YouTubed the video on how to replace a trunk lock, and it didn't seem that complicated at all, but I start thinking I don't want to damage things worst then they already are so I'll just let them fix it. Now I have built a good personal relationship with Bay Auto Center, so I thought that they wouldn't take advantage of me. The following Day when I returned, one of the mechanics brought the part out to replace the old in the parking stall, and it took literally no more than five or ten minutes tops to replace. The owner knew that I was watching his worker pull off the old and pop on the new part so he kept saying to" come back in 30 minutes". I asked him why he was charging me so much and he gave a bull crap answer. My total was $145.00. I felt so bad because I trusted them. He could have and should knocked some of that overhead off. Me, not having ANY clue about cars, was super anxious and upset about getting it fixed under my tight student budget. This is it, the big 500th review!!! (and 5 stars no less!) Had my car seviced here and was pleasantly surprised with the service. The estimate was reasonable and they didn't try to increase my bill. I shopped around for a reputable shop to do the timing belt. Not only did they recommend I include the water pump but they did all belts and seals too. They even did the oil pump seal for free! As an added bonus they fixed a taillight warning light (for free!) that had been on for years that the dealer couldn't remedy. Close to BART and free car wash. I was really sad when I moved from San Mateo and left my favorite mechanic behind. I never thought I'd find another good place near by in Oakland that is also affordable. But I'm happy to report that I have! I am pleasantly surprised by this small little shop. They actually have a customer service desk, which was the first good sign. My oil change was $35 and $15 for the tire rotation. They top off all the fluids in the car and I even got a complimentary car wash. Ricky identified some issues with my 15 years old car. He gave me a verbal estimate for each fix, then he told me it was not worth doing these repairs, which is the painful truth. Employees in this shop are nice and honest. I won't have a chance to buy a new car anytime soon, so I will keep bringing my beloved old junker here until the tires fall off. read more

We took my brother's car in to have some work done and they were so honest and up front regarding what needed to be fixed, and the price. Everything was taken care of in a very timely manner, and they were very accommodating and friendly. They even cleaned the carpets and interior for us, very very thoughtful of them. I've been a client for a little more than a year. Honest, and each time something is wrong they give you an idea of how bad it is/ how urgent to change the piece. Not pushing for upgrades or things you don't need. Prices are totally ok. Service is quick, and very cordial. Will keep going back for any maintenance to my car! Finally found my mechanic for the Bay Area! My car was literally shutting down on I-880 and I had to exit. Luckily I exited about 100 ft away from Bay Auto Center. By the time the car was pushed to the drive, the mechanics were already leaving for the day but compassionately agreed to help me. They correctly guessed that the alternator was broken. The diagnostics cost only 70 (I usually saw 90 in CO) and then I headed to the Bart a block away. The next day they called me with the estimate and work that needed to be done and it was ready for me after work. Best car breakdown ever. They also wash and vacuum your car! My only complaint is that the part prices are a bit high compared to buying off the internet. I could've gotten the alternator for almost 200 less, but I guess that's the price you pay for convenience. read more

And I've always got a free car wash, and I rarely wash my car, so getting an oil change AND a car wash is like Christmas for the car. This place is actually a hidden gem - I'd been passing by Bay Auto for years and never thought to take my car there because it looked like a bit of a dump, and they were always doing body work there in a huge tent out front. Then eventually they moved the bodywork elsewhere and started just servicing cars. I finally got curious and checked them out on Yelp only to be pleasantly surprised by the high ratings. So I took my aging Honda in with good results - fast, honest work for reasonable prices. This continued for many visits - each time Rick the main mechanic would give me a thorough assessment of what work was being done and what my options were and often locating cheaper or used parts for me if I wanted to save money. It's your option and no different from trying to source parts yourself. Or just go with the factory parts if you want to pay $$$! Eventually I got so confident that I decided to take my '93 Audi S4 to Rick. Even though he always seems to be working on Japanese imports he was more than willing to work on it. That too has now been serviced by Rick many times and several larger ticket things have been handled very well, including a replacement clutch that came in on budget even though several additional items showed up that needed to be looked at. When the clutch pedal broke during bleeding due to a fatigue fracture it got replaced at no extra charge no questions asked. If it had been their fault they could have just told us it was defective and charged us, or they could have not told us and fixed it without telling us, perhaps concealing some other problem. But no they were completely on the ball and let us know what was going on and took care of it completely. So our experience has been nothing but good and I feel confident recommending Bay Auto and Rick to my friends, neighbors and Yelpers at large. As they say, YMMV, but in this case I really feel like it is unlikely to vary much from very good. PS. A year or so ago they cleaned up the facility and put on a fresh coat of paint - nothing too fancy, it's not a fancy place, but it should look less scary to those of your used to fancy joints. read more

I've had car parts replaced here twice. The first time, I had to have one of my side mirrors removed and replaced. The service was efficient and the labor cost was reasonable. The second time, my car was broken into and I came here to have my window replaced. I was surprised to find that the estimate for the labor here was 1/5 of what my auto dealership quoted me! I picked up my car the same day and was happy to see that they also cleaned up all the broken glass on the inside. Will definitely return! read more
