I had the lever for my parking brake break off at the joint of the parking brake assembly of my car. I managed to remove the assembly and bring the broken parts over to Mark on a last minute whim who was more than happy to take a look into my rather unusual welding job request for him. After assessing the damage, Mark told me that he could work on it same day for what I would consider an incredibly competitive price. He also told me that I could reduce the price even further by giving him a helping hand, which I did. He showed me some things about welding and we also talked about his background as a welder and about life. He's a great person and after talking to him, I can see why people recommend him highly. After the welding was complete, he guaranteed me that the brake should be strong enough to last a long time and that if it ever broke that I could bring it back and he'd redo the weld. Although after reinstalling it in my car, I don't think that'll be necessary as the lever itself feels far stronger and sturdier than it has ever felt before. I have a 150 year brass and wrought iron weather Vane that flew on my great grandfather's dairy barn. The brass horse is pocked with BB indents from my grandfather's BB gun. The brass horse (vane) had lost its tail and the iron ordinals were in 5 parts (instead or 2). Leave it to Mark to take this mess and make it whole. Great guy to work with. Ordered a deposit box on Amazon to serve as a through-the-fence mailbox, but it wasn't deep enough to receive larger mail (4.25" depth). Now 10.25" after a cutting and welding job. Some metal got a little deformed from the heat, but the box now serves its purpose and the deformities are only visible behind the fence anyway. We found ourselves in a jam when we tried to remove a big decorative iron grate from inside our house, and found it was far too long to get down and around the turn in our staircase. Contacted the owner through his craigslist post advertising welding and went by his "shop" to get some welding done. A tiny piece of sheet metal in my car needed a few spot welds (door check, part that holds the door when it swings open), so I figured this would be a quick and simple job. I arrived to find the proprietor of this establishment standing on the street in front of his house. When I pulled up, he put all his weight down on my car. I hate when people touch my car, but when I realized he had an amputated leg, I figured there was not much he could do. I'm not a judgmental person and give people a fair chance, so I decided to give this guy a fair chance as well. To get the job done, I had to remove the door to my car (takes about 5 minutes, had tools with me to do the job). Keep in mind, this is on the sidewalk of a narrow street. This should have raised a red flag for me, but, for some reason, I decided to still give the guy a chance. His craigslist ad states that assistance is welcome, but would be limited to holding tape measure. I ended up carrying his tool bags, his welder, running cables, etcs. Basically, if it weren't for me helping, the whole day would have gone by. A wet towel was placed in the door opening so that no sparks would fly in and set anything on fire. He assured me everything would be okay, and of course, I decided to trust him (he's a professional welder after all, right?). Right before he gets to the job, he reminds me of the time so he can charge me hourly (honestly, someone who takes 5 minutes to walk across the street, should NOT charge hourly). All the way up until he starts welding, he keeps on stalling and delaying, asking me questions and looking at the engine bay of the car. He explains things to me, which is great, but not when I'm paying him to work. He then tells me he charges $50-100/hour, and says he'll do it for $75 for me. A lot more than his "maybe less than $50" quote on Craigslist, but I'm not going to argue about it if he does a good job. The entire time he's setting up, it is taking what feels like ages. He even needs help finding a ground connection for the welder and asks me to scratch of paint to get to the metal while he sets up. So here's where things start to go wrong. He makes the first weld and while it looks like crap, he reminds me that the slag will be taken off and it can be grinded down. So okay, we continue to the next weld. All of a sudden, the smell of burning plastic fills the air. He set the wiring harness connector in the car on fire. It's burning and melting in the process, deforming the plastic and ruining it beyond belief. This basically means that my passenger side door will not longer work (mirrors, windows, locks) and I have to do EXTENSIVE repairs to fix harness (involves removing the dash). Keep in mind, the amount of actual time he spent welding was 5 minutes. 5 MINUTES!! This idiot now has the audacity to put part of the blame on ME! "You should have known it was going to burn"... my answer? "I'M NOT A WELDER!". The whole reason I went to him is because I do not weld! He then tries to down play it and says things like "do you live in a good neighborhood?" because he knows my window won't go up anymore and I can't lock the door without the harness plugged in. Seriously? What kind of idiotic question is that? I then made it clear to him that he will NOT be compensated for the work. He caused considerable damage to my car and his weld is piss-poor. But, being the kind soul that I am, I give this douche bag $20 to cover materials cost. I put the door back on, took my car home and then spent the next 3 hours grinding down his welds, cutting my harness and fixing it just to have the wiring connected. This is not the end of my upcoming project. I now how to remove the entire dash and replace the connector, a whole day worth of work. Maybe it's my fault for going to a moron that can barely lift his own tools, but one thing I know for sure, Mark Ruhe is incapable and irresponsible. Stay far, far away. read more
