I've been a loyal customer of this place with my family ever since I was in my little age (I wanna say ever since I was in fifth grade), and this place really takes care of you when it comes to your teeth. I had a terrible experience at a previous dentist, and I was so filled with anxiety my first visit here, but my fears were very quickly put to the side! I only wish I had come here sooner! I have been a patient to Dr. Katrina Tu for the past 2 years. She is in my opinion the best dentist that I have visited so far in Bay Area. Dr. Tu is the kind of doctor that you will seldom come across, who can both explain well her treatment rationale and also has great dental skill. She has saved a problematic tooth of mine that was really badly decayed since I was young. I have tried to look for a dentist who is skilled enough and knowledgeable enough to give me some advice and treatment for a long time. Some dentists just directly asked me to do a root canal + crown without any further examination, some dentists couldn't explain that well why they decide to provide a particular treatment. But Dr. Tu has helped me thoroughly exam the x-ray, use various test, i.e. cold test, probe test etc. to determine whether a root canal or tooth filling is needed and she explained all the logic and rationale with great clarity and confidence. She has helped me fill the tooth with no pain. I don't need to explain how hard it is to fill a tooth that is near to get root canal. My teeth are super sensitive and my previous fillings that have been done at other dental offices always get me some sensitivity and uneasiness, but not with her. She has even helped me adjust one of my previous filling to make that sensitivity and pain go away, which shows her great skill and ability to always provide a working solution to teeth problem. Most recently, I have some tooth problem that need treatment again and I went for her again. I asked a lot of questions about why certain treatment is needed and why there's particular symptoms. She is always able to provide me with a sound and persuasive answer with ample evidence to support her judgement with kindness and patience. And of course, the final treatment result is as always high quality. All the dental fillings she has helped me done are all working so well for me. I don't have sensitive feeling, I floss with no problem (some previous fillings that were not done by her made me hard to floss after the procedure) and those fillings stay there safe and sound though I am not particularly careful about what kind of food I eat (not a good patient. You should really not eat too much hard food like me, there's always a chance to displace the filling with overuse of your tooth). I just feel that I have to write this review because finding a good dentist is so hard and so important. I am so grateful that I have encountered her and I have recommended her to all my good friends and family members. She is definitely those doctors that you seldom come across in any country and any specialty. Doctors who can do treatment well may not be able to explain well. Doctors who can explain things well might not be as skilful. And not mentioning all kinds of doctors nowadays who are either over treatment or too passive in intervening at the right time. Despite part 1 below, I decided to proceed with treatment anyway, entirely based on Dr. Lee's Yelp reviews. I could deal with Tracy's incompetence and Dr. Lee's arrogance if the dental work was good, which Yelp reviews suggested. In early Nov, I called to schedule treatment. Tracy said: "Dr. Lee has no availability in Dec. In Jan he's attending a conference, but hasn't confirmed his dates, so can you call back in Jan?" It struck me as odd that a cosmetic dentist is booked out 2 months ahead during a pandemic. I also found it odd that Dr. Lee hadn't finalized his conference dates, given conferences take much advance planning. I asked the name of the conference, figuring I could Google it to find the dates, then book around those dates. Tracy wouldn't give it to me. Then I asked what the conference dates were, since that must surely be finalized. Tracy said they weren't. Then I asked about scheduling in Feb. Tracy said they weren't scheduling Feb appointments yet. I felt I was getting the run-around. I asked when is the earliest I can call back to check availability again, since I didn't want to wait until Jan to book a Jan appointment considering they were already booked 2 months out. Tracy said Dec, so I put a calendar reminder to call back then. When I called back 12/7, Tracy said Dr. Lee was no longer going to a conference, but now had to return to HK in Jan, then quarantine for 2 weeks after returning. Tracy said to call back late Jan to ask about Feb availability. I pointed out this was implausible because HK wasn't allowing US passport holders to enter due to the pandemic. Now certain I was being lied to, I hung up and asked a friend to call Dr. Lee's office to try to book an appointment. My friend reported back that she was told Dr. Lee had wide open availability, both Dec & Jan, and that he was working through the holiday. No travel plans, no HK, conference, nothing. I called Dr. Lee's office back and asked Tracy: "Are you SURE Dr. Lee has no availability Dec or Jan, and is 100% traveling in Jan? You're SURE?" She said yes. I told her about my friend and said it felt like I was being blown off in the hopes I'd give up and go find another dentist. I asked point blank: "Does Dr. Lee simply not want to treat me, for whatever reason - bad vibes, chemistry, whatever? Because if that's the case, you could have just said so upfront. Then I could have used the past 6 weeks to get treated by another dentist vs. getting the run-around from you." I said it would be MEDICALLY UNETHICAL TO LIE about availability and tell me to call back 2 months later while KNOWINGLY letting my condition get worse. Tracy stammered that Dr. Lee wasn't refusing to treat me, he was just unavailable. I said that made no sense given my friend just called and said Dr. Lee had wide open availability. Tracy responded: "Your procedure takes 1 hour. Consultations only require 30 min. Your friend asked about a consultation. It's true we have 30 min consultation slots, but no 1 hour slots." Pathetic. I said: "Fine, if you are truthfully saying Dr. Lee has no availability, despite what my friend just told me, then put me on a waitlist in case someone cancels." Then I hung up. Three days later, Tracy called out of the blue: "Are you feeling pain?" I was puzzled. I never mentioned pain in prior calls, and no dentist office ever called me just to ask if I had pain. I said no, my tooth is worsening each week, but I'm not feeling pain. She insisted that last time I said I had pain (not true), and Dr. Lee thinks I should go with a different dentist so it doesn't get worse since he's unavailable. I said again I had no pain, so no thanks. Then she changed her story: "You should go to a different dentist because, upon reviewing your case, we don't think we can meet your expectations." I nearly laughed out loud: "What do you mean 'meet my expectations'?" She said, "We cannot disclose the reasons." Really! You cannot disclose reasons about my own case to me, the patient? She was desperately grasping for straws. I had had enough of the charade. I told her: "That's the real reason, isn't it? As I suspected, Dr. Lee just didn't want to treat me. You and he lied repeatedly about availability, with asinine reasons about conferences, HK, quarantine, 30 min slots. You knowingly let my condition worsen for weeks. When you got caught in the lie, you pathetically tried to push it back on me by saying 'since you feel pain, go to a different dentist!'" It's the doctor's right to refuse treating someone. But rather than just give a straight answer, Dr. Lee and Tracy LIED about availability, strung me along, and KNOWINGLY AND UNETHICALLY let my condition get worse. Stay away from this UNETHICAL, arrogant, empathy-lacking, incompetent dental practice! read more

I have been coming here for about 4 years and it has completely changed my perception of what a dentist experience should be like. I used to be afraid of the dentist when I was younger and later on just hated going so I avoided it as much as I could but ever since I found this place I actually love going to the dentist! Everyone here is always nice and friendly. They always make sure all my questions are answered and are very thorough when explaining the procedures they're going to be doing. What I like most is that they seem to actually take interest in their patients which is so rare to find. This is a long overdue review, for Dr. Lee and his team. I've been coming here for around 5 years on the recommendation of my mom. Originally, I didn't want to listen to my mom because I thought I'm an adult and can figure things out on my own - aka I found my own dentist on Yelp. I was seeing that dentist for about a year, MANY horrible incidents later (aka drilling out all my teeth, emergency root canal, thick and uncomfortable crown, horrible recommendations, etc) I decided to listen to my mom. All I can say is, momma knows best. Dr. Lee is very professional and has lots of experience. He's honest about his work and would never convince you to do anything that's not needed. He cares about his patients and their well-being, and takes pride in his work, making sure that everything he does looks perfect. After my initial consultation where I got a second opinion on a tooth, he told me that my tooth didn't even have a cavity and no work needed to be done. This was a shock to me because the last dentist told me the cavity was so deep that I might as well just go straight for a root canal/crown without even doing a filling. 5 years later, that tooth is still fine. The team at Bay Smile isn't incredible only because of Dr. Lee. Everyone works together to provide the best experience for their patients. Agnes is my designated dental hygienist, she's great and deserves a shoutout! I have a small mouth and a huge tongue but she is great at working around that and providing the best cleaning experience while being gentle but thorough. Dr. Tu is also super knowledgeable and efficient. Vianey, the dental assistant, along with all the front desk coordinators are all very friendly. Oh! I forgot to mention the office. There's so much new technology, and it's beautiful. Going to the dentist for me used to be something I dreaded. I was always scared of getting cheated or ripped off. I've been going to Dr. Lee's for a few years now since the Dentist I was going to merged his practice here. The dental hygienists are great and give good info on what I should be worried about for my teeth and the advice they have given to date has been spot on. I've had one tooth removed (on their advice - turns out they were right, if I had waited it would have been a difficult tooth to remove) and 2 cavity fillings. Saw some negative reviews but somehow I still felt like giving it a try. I regret my decision. For my first appointment, they bombarded me with messages and calls (confirmation, reconfirmation, moving appointment for their convenience, reconfirmation). For my second appointment, I learned it's canceled while I was there on time. They said they couldn't reach me to confirm so they canceled it. I never had any appointment canceled like this before with ANY doctors. This experience is very disappointing. I've seen reviews that Dr. Lee is unethical and I agree. I think the dental board and/or IRS should investigate his billing practices and patient outcomes. He neglected to do the proper procedures with me (my new dentist is sure that he should've done a bone graft when he extracted a tooth) and it has caused me pain and expense.
