My daughter was one of the first patients when this location opened. Brett was incredible working with her. A lot of places don't work with pedi patients but the fact that my daughter was only 9 didn't cause them any pause. In the past 7 years they have treated myself and two of my children. I recommend them to everyone and wouldn't go anywhere else! As a bonus, if you are a member at the YMCA you can even check little ones into babysitting or send your older kids for a swim while you are in therapy :-) There are a lot of therapists here now and Mike is my personal favorite but they all have different styles do you can find one that works best for you. Mat is perfect for my oldest daughter who had a spinal fusion because of his gentle touch. I just know that if you go there, you will never go anywhere else. read more

I can't recommend Mat & Rachael at Bay State Physical Therapy enough. My 15 year old son had a complete ACL reconstruction and a meniscal repair in August. We started PT a month before his surgery and they got him 100% ready and in the best possible shape he could possibly be in. Being only 4 months after surgery we are on our way to being able to play sports again! Our surgeon is extremely pleased every time we go for a follow up. Their team work and laid back atmosphere makes it so welcoming to an unfortunate situation. From day 1 I've felt comfortable and so happy with how the recovery is going. This is my third stint with these therapists. The first was pre-op before my first hip replacement. After I continued with post-op with great results. I wish I had pre-op before my second hip replacement in April. I'm post-op now with great therapists. I'm continuing with these folk for my knee replacement in a couple of weeks and will be back post-op. The therapists are all personable and, especially, are very knowledgeable. Can't stump them! Updated Review: Still absolutely fantastic. This business is made up of great friendly physical therapists. I've now been coming to Bay State Physical Therapy for 2 years. This place is still the best. I had a back injury resulting in chronic pain in March 2013 and started treatment with Dr. Mike Sheehan, DPT, in September 2014. I have been coming twice a week for most of my treatment. I am a new person because I came here. I know how dramatic that sounds, but I truly am. I never thought I'd get better, and that I may end up in a wheelchair at a young age due to my health deteriorating from my pain. Dr. Mike saved my life, and helped me create a new, healthy life. He's believed in me and my ability to get better, which is more than I can say for any other provider. Although I've been coming for a long time, I would not be able to handle my pain if it weren't for the care I receive at Bay State. My pain may or may not be curable, but Dr. Mike has made it as manageable as possible, but like he says, it's all about teamwork. I have changed my lifestyle habits such as eating healthy, drinking water, exercise, vitamins, getting off medications, and incorporating other healthy habits. It doesn't always feel nice when getting stretched, and cracked, and pulled in pt, but I feel like a brand new person every single time I leave. Dr. Mike has incredible strength and I've found like I like a lot of force to be used in my therapy because I have a high tolerance for pain. I have struggled for a long time with pain and previously went to another physical therapist once, who did not "evaluate" me; instead, had me do a bunch of exercises that hurt me and did not explain why I was doing them. So I didn't return. My friend comes to Bay State PT and recommended it to me and I am SO glad she did. They have truly changed my quality of life. I have struggled with an injury for almost 2 years untreated and they were very attentive, they listened to everything I had to say, they evaluated me and told me exactly what they were doing, why they were doing it, what areas on me it would help. Dr. Mike Sheehan and his student who has since went back to school, Colleen have been my team. It is so important that they evaluate you this way and explain things, and they know what they are doing because they can explain everything. They give you proper exercises and push you to get better, but are aware of your strengths and pain. I've been coming here for 110 weeks after being neglected and not treated for almost 2 years. They have improved my daily life so much. They are not miracle workers, but damn near close. Brett Ferrell, MSPT, CSCS, is a partner of Bay State Physical Therapy and he's very nice and personable. I like that Bay State Physical Therapy feels like a community, and that it's in a gym. Having a pt office in a gym is a better environment than a doctors office because it promotes health, wellness, and movement. Evaluations take place behind curtains, and then regular appointments are not unless requested. They're very accommodating and easy-going. I like that they don't use the curtains and that the space used is a semi-small area because it is motivating to see other people working. They have tens units, or stim, and have upgraded (there are a few available). They use a hydrauculator for heat packs, and also have ice packs. I've also used the pool or aqua therapy which has been incredibly helpful for being able to work out and not feel the pain until later. Overall if you need help with physical therapy, I would highly recommend this place, and I truly believe the work they do here changes lives. read more

I have to say, I'm not sure where the bad review came from...they do have a stim machine, the space is great, they only allow service dogs in the Y to begin with, and Melissa is my PT - she is as good as it gets. I have been going to Bay State for a year, and have had a great experience with them. Melissa is really good at what she does (I have been to other PTs in the past who were NOT as good as her) and cares about her patients. She has helped me along a long road of recovery from a few injuries, and has the perfect balance of manual PT (massage, etc) and working with me on exercises to build strength. All the PTs that work there are really fun, encouraging, and kind. It's a great place to work on your recovery and feel less isolated with your pain or injury! Would recommend it 100%. read more

Best physical therapy in Beverly, MA I have ever had. Go in for the 1st visit/consultation with Lauren, like I did, and you'll see right away. She's not just smart and doesn't just answer your questions; it's the way she answers them too and the programs she uses. I knew 1/2 way through the 1st visit that I was dealing with someone and a business unlike the 13 other physical therapists/offices I've seen over the years. I will never need to go to another physical therapy office nor will I ever. Lauren, Mike and Bret are God sends! Lauren showed me how to align my SI joint just by walking up stairs and pushing my knees together. Sounds weird, but it works every time! I'm so grateful I don't have to feel that grinding pain in my low back. The only adjustments are those that are necessary to do the physical therapy exercises like if your knee cap shifts after many low weight repetitions so I even found those beneficial and done only to remove any kinks. *Rotations (done with SAFE form always) and working with the body's own weight. *Traditional weights are used PLUS bands, tubes, rollers, balls, TRX and balance boards. *Can buy athletic and therapy equipment cheaper than in stores. *Customer service- The receptionist, Tammy, really went out of her way to get my insurance coverage (took months to resolve-I didn't have to do a thing.) Bret excused something like 13 uninsured visits since I'm out of work. Office location in the YMCA is great! The Y let's you take advantage of other services while you're there for PT. Overall: Even in an economic recession, Bay State Physical Therapy is not about $ but about quality. read more

This is the first time in 40 years where I think physical therapy works. Historically, if I had an injury I would go the mandatory minimum and back to my personal trainer with whom I had far more success than with a PT until I met Melissa. From the first time Melissa examined me I knew that she understood how things work. She has been extremely successful in developing a plan based on two different surgeon's reports and my clinical presentations. She also is responsive to my needs to maintain a busy work and physical life style. She also communicates very effectively with my surgeons which they appreciate so they can have a more informed reevaluation. The office is a great place. It is clean and friendly. Oh, and did I mention Kevin. He works with me in the gym, and won't let me cheat! read more

They spent a half our with my son on each of his biweekly appointments. No modalities used. They performed exercises that we were instructed to do at home for a $160/half hour visit. I felt he was often handed off to an aide and not given the attention of the actual PT. I was advised to get orthotics for his shoes, they never followed up, despite me asking. I felt like nothing was accomplished, my son said his injury was not better. I quit taking him after one month. read more

Went in for an evaluation and came out with a set of exercises that still boggle the mind. They were the opposite of what I am supposed to be doing for the injury I have. Owner has too big of an ego, didn't listen, and consequently I have re-injured myself based on wrong exercises he gave me. Got second opinions from another surgeon and physical therapist and they were both astonished I had been given these exercises to do. read more

I've been here on two separate occasions for Aqua physical therapy in the pool. This time I came because of lack of motion in my right ankle due to an allograft bone transplant in my ankle and the fact I have trouble with weight bearing and rely on a power wheel chair to get around pain free. Aqua PT is geared for people just like me with weight bearing issues. Everyone in the pool regardless of injury whether it be arm, leg or back do the same exact exercises. There was no individualized plan geared towards my needs. Aqua therapy here is not One on One. Instead all the clients get into the pool and have therapy together. Not much room in the pool. Once there was 9 of us in the pool with 2 therapists. I spent three-quarters of my time in the pool doing upper body exercises with my arms. The only work done on my ankle was walking back and forth in the pool for 5 minutes to warm up for the upper body exercises. I've decided to pull out of Bay State Physical Therapy and find a more professionally trained physical therapist to work on my ankle instead of my arms. I feel like I wasted 60 days of my time coming to this facility it was completely worthless and I'm going to have to start over someplace else. Highly disappointed and I do not recommend Aqua therapy at Bay State Physical Therapy unless you have an injury in your back or your arms it's completely worthless if you have a leg injury. The questions I will ask for my next place will be 1. Is the therapy geared towards my injury. 2. Is the therapy one on one with a therapist. This will be a must. read more

I'm amazed by the reviews that people actually found relief by going to Bay State. I ended up here because this location was the only PT I could find on my insurance list without a 2-4 month wait. I should have waited or gone out of network. I spent $650 on co-pays to Bay State and religiously went in for appointments 2-3 times a week for several weeks. Each time I went in I was seen by a different PT and the notes from the last PT were often incomplete or unhelpful. There was no progress and literally no effort from the staff to figure out why I wasn't getting better. My insurance allowed 12 visits and when the visits were done I went back to my ortho who told me Bay State didn't follow the treatment plan he indicated. I confronted Bay State and they blamed it on the doc's poor handwriting on the script. The fact that I wasn't progressing at all and continued to be in a lot of pain should have been a tip, no? I was so depressed and in so much pain but decided to go out of network and out of pocket to a private PT. In 3 visits the new PT got me moving, standing straight and taught me the exercises to do to alleviate pain and start getting stronger. Paying out of pocket was about the same cost as the worthless co-pays for the 12 Bay State visits. The private PT did it in 3 at $125 a visit. I would say that my experience at BS was a fluke but I have two friends who were going to BS during the same time period as myself only to finish out their insurance visits and then go to a different PT. I simply can't recommend Bay State. Now that I found a great PT I marvel at the lack of experience and true care of the staff at BS. I hate to bash any establishment but you are dealing with people's health who are often in a lot of pain and simply want to exist day-to-day without medications. It is your responsibility to get your patients better and if they aren't, try and figure out why. read more

I can't say enough about how great Melissa and Baystate PT have been! I have been a patient there 2-3x a week for the past 8 months. I suffer from severe scoliosis and had multiple surgeries to correct it. I was referred to Melissa after being in a car accident in early September. My back, neck and shoulders were a mess. I was able to get an appointment right away and was treated with care and compassion. During the end of my treatment, I was involved in another rear end collision. Melissa got me in for an appointment to evaluate me that day. I went through a horrible 2 months of severe pain and migraine headaches that prevented me from working. She has been a God sent, and has helped me get back on my feet and back to work. She even went out of her way to call my short term disability insurance company on my behalf. She went above and beyond my expectations. Now that I'm back to my crazy work schedule and long ER shifts, I look forward to my Thursday appointments with her.
