Oh my Lord, we finally have a fabulous brunch spot in the north side of Portland! It not only has beinets and cornbread eggs Benedict but it also has live music every Thursday, Friday(openmic;) Saturday then also trivia and other mingle activities to do at this great local Family restaurant w a bar for all those local neighborhood evening gathering opportunities!

I really wanted to like this place better. A really big menu, lots of Southern specialties and a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, the service was abysmal and the food was not great. The highlights were the cornbread, the beignets, and the grits. The beignets were New Orleans-caliber. The red beans and rice looked to have been put together and refrigerated, and then microwaved, which I saw from our seat. The pork on top and the beans were very dry. The fried eggs came out "dirty," looking like they were cooked on a part of the grill with lots of other food, and it retained that taste and looked "dirty."

I absolutely love the Bayou Kitchen on Deering Ave, so when I found out there was the Bayou Kitchen on Auburn Ave, I was so excited! Closer to home! They just opened up a month or so ago. Checked this place out on Sunday and I was not disappointed. Menu is exactly the same but the space is bigger and the vibe is totally different, a little more calm for a person like me. I loved it! The service was great. Yes, a little slow but I didn't mind. My husband and I just read and enjoyed each other's company. I met the restaurant Manager and he was so kind! We met the owner too, he shook our hand. What a lovely man. Check this place out! Totally worth it! The owner mentioned they have live music during the week and some fun events to bring the community together, that's super cool! Sounds like you can have dinner here too? Maybe open later hours?

Cold and dry pancake with ice cold butter. Grrr...

The hours posted say 9pm online and at 5pm it's closed. Nothing like the original bayou kitchen!

Lots of options and great if people in your party want mix of breakfast and lunch type offerings. They have yummy sides including potatoes or my fave the grits and add cheese. Red beans and rice may be an option as well. For your bread option you can also choose cornbread. Obviously not a lot of Cajun/New Orleans type food in Maine so this is always a nice chsnge. The jambalaya and gumbo are great. There are crawfish options as well. I dont think they have po boys, beignets or oysters though. Blackboard specials are usually great as well. I almost always get one. Usually there's an egg type dish, sweet pancake type option snd sandwich/burger option. No Crystal hot sauce but lots of yummy Maine hot sauces, which are great on the cornbread. Street parking is all around and there is a pay lot behind the restaurant. Big Sky Bread is across the street. We like to walk over after to pick up a yummy treat or breakfast goodies for the next day.

The music was New Orleans and just the right volume. It wasn't the waiter's fault they had run out of wine on Mother's Day. Apparently their source hadn't replenished it yet, but they do have a full bar. There may be an issue with management as the friendly service could still use some polish, but the food was excellent, and prices are affordable with 10 lunch selections under $10. Did I say how good the food was?! I had a creamy chicken dish and my friend had shrimp (big shrimp) with a spicy sauce on the side. Yum! They don't gave a flashy exterior, but across the street you'll likely see red umbrellas on the patio if you need help finding it. I'll definitely be back.

For appetizers, we ordered the mussels and arugula salad. Omg. The mussels were incredible!!! They were so fresh, plump and the sauce was divine. We liked it more than Scales which I think might be a less popular opinion. The ambiance was very rustic and cozy. It did feel a little cramped and the first table they sat us at was in the middle of a bunch of other tables and I really don't think it would be a nice table for anyone. Thankfully they moved us to a corner/booth which was very nice of them. Even in the corner it was still a little cramped which is my reason for not giving it 5 stars. The pasta dish with lobster in a red sauce was divine. Full of other seafood in addition to the lobster like mussels and clams too. It was definitely messy but the flavor was fantastic. Tons of garlic which we love. The octopus appetizer was also delicious. Very charred which normally I wouldn't like but it worked very well with this dish. We also got hummus which was a special appetizer. It was ok- not very memorable. The desserts didn't appeal to us (maybe we were just too full). Would love to return if we find ourselves back in Portland!

The younger guys running food and guys standing around chatting with each other weren't helpful. They saw my friends water cups were low but didnt offer any refills. I saw one of them putting food in the to go area when I walked up to the host stand, we made eye contact but no greeting at all. There were 2 tables who sat down way after us but immediately received their food. We ordered Lobby Pops, Lobster Rolls, Haddock Sandwich and their lobster flights. My cousin's food came out before ours, we only ordered 1 lobby pop and a haddock sandwich this visit. The wait wasn't too long but 45mins for just 1 lobster tail on a stick is ridiculous. My cousins larger order came out 15 minutes before ours. Maybe they were working on our sauce? My husband's Haddock sandwich was paper thin. The lettuce was thicker than the actual fish. Would not recommend it. Lobby pop was tasty. Blood Mary was okay, nothing special. Tasted fresh. I do love their charred pineapple sauce. Highlight of this place. It was creamy and refreshing. Honestly, don't think I'll recommend this to anyone. You can get better tentative service elsewhere and have yummy lobster. Saw others on here recently having customer service issues as well. I took all of my friends and family who visited from out of town here but its not the place anymore. Christmas decor was beautiful. But now maybe the staff changed, not a fan anymore. Disappointing...

From the moment you arrive, you know you are walking into a quality restaurant. We sat at the bar, what a show! We got immediate attention, got our drink order right away, got to see everyone behind the bar work in harmony. We then ordered some oysters, watch out, they come to you, up front and close. They shuck them right in front of you, explain what they are and where they came from and leave you the condiments to enjoy. THE BEST OYSTERS I've had in my life and I've had them all over the world. Fresh, soft delicate goodness. After you are done, they send the ice and shells down a hole built in the bar! Genius! The tuna crudo was sooo good! It is made in front of you, carefully and artfully arranged on a plate. A masterpiece! The specials where then covered and today I wanted to have one of each is an understatement. We both had to order the brown butter halibut, good God that was so delicious. Insanely delicious! We were told that there is one chef that dedicates their time cooking this dish as well as the scallops. Can't beat that! My hubby ordered some rolls to "sop up" some of that brown butter goodness and he was not disappointed. Everyone was so happy, talkative, truly enjoying the evening.
