Rustic dining experience in Yarmouth that packs a punch with local food. Friendly staff and our waitress was seamlessly working around the room attending to guests. Impressive cocktail menu, and notably one of the better non-alcoholic mocktail programs I've seen in the entire Greater Portland area. The crab dip was as every bit of sensational as I expected. Bread is always a good choice, but honestly, there's not enough for the dish. I think they could do something special with Ritz Crackers here to complement. We ordered the daily special, a beef brisket with celery root/potato mash and brisket filled ravioli with a truffle cream sauce. The ravioli was the winner here for me - I would bottle up that truffle cream sauce and sell it. I love that they kept a good portion of the original framework of the building - it adds to the romantic touch to the rustic interior. Our recent dinner at Gather was a 5/5 experience -- we're already planning our next visit. From the moment we parked and saw the beautiful building housing the restaurant, we knew it was going to be a special spot. We dined on a Saturday with reservations. While the restaurant wasn't packed, there was a steady crowd so I'd definitely recommend booking ahead, especially during tourist season. The space is large and open, with rustic decor that felt cozy and romantic. The service was outstanding. Our waitress walked us through the menu, helped us pick out mocktails (#becauseDryJanuary), and checked in regularly without ever making us feel rushed, even though we were the last ones dining. The food was incredible. Most of the menu featured locally sourced ingredients, which we loved. We started with the mussels in vermouth sauce and the Maine crab dip, which was hands-down the best we've ever had. I had the sweet corn curry with bison, which was delicious, and the marinated ribeye was also excellent. Went here for restaurant week, and it was the first time trying the restaurant. First off it's the building is super cool, it looks like an old meeting building. They have a large bar, open seating and kitchen concept. Our waitress was lovely. We for a bottle of wine (decently priced) and then our 3 courses for restaurant week. Fun little place! Really cool setup with the kitchen up on what appears to have formerly been a stage. I got the smash burger, which was quite good with the homemade pimento cheese, and the Mai Mai Mai, which was also good, but felt like there could be more liquid in there (or maybe it was just the tiki mug messing with me, who knows). The rest of my party did the salmon (good) and shrimp and grits (which was good, though not much food for the price). Gather is built into a former Masonic Lodge. They have used the open space in such a way that even though it's very open, it feels very cozy. The decor is kind of rustic which is both casual and elegant and is perfect for their farm to table menu. The staff was very cheerful and friendly. Quick to offer suggestions but didn't hover too much. The food was fantastic! We started with the truffle fries which were a big hot for the four of us. Crispy and delicious. My Smash burger was perfectly cooked and not at all pretentious. Two orders of orichiette pasta came out and were resoundingly complimented. The roasted squash dish was a fall winner, too. Wow this good was amazing, service was perfect place is very comfortable with lots of great seating options. We got the crispy eggplant which has some Asian seasoning and was absolutely phenomenal. The person I was with said it was the best eggplant they had ever had. The chicken was a larger portion beatiful presented as was everything, it was also delicious. But my absolute favorite was the Atlantic Cod it was in a wonderful sauce with Swiss card and parsnips. The rutabaga in coconut curry was like nothing I had ever had before and was excellent. Our family came here for brunch on Easter Sunday, however you would not know it was Easter at the restaurant as it was not once acknowledged throughout our entire visit nor was there a special on the menu for Easter Brunch. We were sat immediately by a friendly hostess but it took a bit for our waitress to come by and this set the stage for the entire meal. We ordered two bloody Mary's that were very good and our daughter ordered the spiked cold brew. It was a little strong for her liking, however we were able to get some cold brew to add and it was much better. When it came to ordering, I am gluten free and was told there is no gluten free toast other than a hb bun therefore my only choice on the menu was the Huevos rancheros. Quite a bit of time went by and the waitress returns to tell me they only have flour tortillas do not an option. In the end I had eggs Benedict on a GF hb bun. This is a restaurant that sells themselves as a farm to table type place, have some gf bread. It's pretty common now. Once we had our food we were never asked if wanted more coffee , had to wave down someone after our meal was finished. In the end our waitress was not going to offer dessert I had to ask what the options were. I really wanted to like this place. The decor with the plants when you walk in is really nice. The building is alluring and the design for Maine is far cooler than most things I saw. The food is incredible. Our party of 6 ordered one of every entree! We started with the crab dip.. which was decadent and divine. The salad was also delicious with a grilled Smokey kale in it and watermelon and feta and cornbread croutons. All the cocktails were creative and good size and price. The entrees offered something for everyone from the most finicky young adult to a vegan. The steak frites were great, the truffle fries amazing the carrot dish and explosion of flavor ! A second star for ambience. Got there for 8:15 pm for a special birthday dinner & special gathering. We were the last & only party but the lights were so low, no one could read their menus. The worst was that the food was hyper salty. Orchiette also has poorly rehydrated peas. Like firm pebbles. Birthday girl's meal of carrots & feta was tiny @$27 & so salty she was eating slowly. Wait staff came & took her plate without asking. Salad drowned in dressing. Truffle fries were so salty we all ate some bc we were hungry & love truffle oil. Most were left uneaten. Wait staff couldn't wait to get us out so kept taking plates without asking if we were finished. That really pissed me off. Pro: crispy eggplant was delicious. Short rib (1) was reported to be good. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here this past weekend and were very pleased. We have had a number of friends and coworkers recommend that we try it and finally got around to going. First off, I must commend them for an excellent plan to handle the coronavirus restrictions. Reservations were required as well as texting/calling upon arrival. Face masks were required and tables properly separated. The touch less bill payment option was very cool as well The food was very good. My wife and daughter spilt a beet salad which they enjoyed, especially the goat cheese which was very strong but delicious. I had the crab fritters which were a bit mushy but very flavorful. For entrees, my wife had the summer steak which was perfectly cooked. I had the flounder with lemon, capers and brown butter which was very good. My daughter ordered a gluten free pizza which was surprisingly excellent for GF. The service was super friendly but a bit slow and distant at times. I am willing to overlook it due to the fact that our waitress seemed to be covering a lot of tables and dealing with the difficulties of extensive outdoor seating due to the pandemic. So, I really hate writing this review - I so wanted to love Gather, especially since I loved Sur Lie. But... Gather, not so much. A couple of things jump to mind. First, the website, maybe it was the way we read it, but we thought that there were other options than brunch, at the the time we went, but no. Second, the cocktails - Bloody Mary was small and weak. I ordered a Mimosa, but then had to ask for it again twice - I think I know why, and that's the third reason. There was a bluegrass band playing, loudly, in a very small space and right behind our table. We were there meeting friends we haven't seen in a while and as I said to the server "this isn't going to work" but evidently that wasn't heard. I also usually like to address these kind of issues while in the restaurant and with the server or host, but, we weren't asked. And, frankly, it was kinda like we were not that important. Food - well, the smash burger and fries that our friend had was good, as were the home fries and Benedict. I had the French toast and it was ok, although not hot. Wayne had a Croque Monsieur which was ok, he called it "underwhelming". Positives - their reservation system was great - we had originally asked for the patio, but called when the rain continued. Oh my. This was a very unpleasant dining experience. First off, the food was not good. We ordered a spring salad and mussels to start. The salad was way overdressed with a very unappealing dressing. The whole dish tasted like dirt, and not in a fresh vegetable kind of way. My wife couldn't eat it, but I choked it down. The mussels were fine, but the broth was not particularly flavorful. For my entree, I had the steak. Probably one of the worse steaks I have had in my life, which is pretty disappointing for $36. It was very fatty, again, not in a good way but in a fat gristle kind of way. My wife had a pasta dish that she barely touched and just had a weird flavor. My wife had gastrointestinal issues that night. Unclear what from, but I assume the pasta since it is the only thing that I didn't also eat. The service was not rude, but not particularly friendly. We also were the first people in the restaurant at 4:30 pm (with a reservation) and we were given what I would consider the worst table in the house. Other couples that arrived after us got big nice booths. Our table had sun streaming directly onto it and in my wife's eyes. I got up on my tip toes to slowly bring the shade down and nobody offered to come over the help. I could have asked, but I shouldn't have to. The check was as you would expect. Incredibly overpriced for what is being served. Not sure why I am giving 2 stars instead of 1, but I guess because the ambience and physical space were nice. In town only a few nights and this place appeared to have a succinct but diverse enough menu to make for an enjoyable dinner. First, don't order the steak...t says NY Strip, but I found it questionable...with the dish hitting our table in just about 10 minutes. That should have been the first red flag. Second, was the preparation, "sliced" by someone other than the customer. Third, was the high grissle and facial content. Last was the gravy, while not bad, appeared to be a mask for the steaks lack of quality. Being so hungry, I muscled through it, but honestly hated doing so in the end. I decided to ask our waitress, how it was the steak was prepared so quickly? Her response, " ok I think they just have some ready for orders". Well, there you have it. A proprietor and chef who obviously take so little pride in their dishes, they can't serve a quality NY Strip...if it really was one - avoid...or at least question them up front. I was fortunate enough to experience Gather with a special event for Dinnermates, so we had the entire restaurant to ourselves. And gather indeed we did--for one delectable meal. First up: a kale salad. I'm normally ambivalent about kale (I don't hate it, but always feel like I'm supposed to like it more than I do), but this was truly one of the best salads I've ever had. Whatever they did to the kale made it just soft enough yet still crisp enough, and it was mixed with shaved Brussels sprouts and thin slivers of apple and a Dijon dressing with some rosemary mixed in. The woman sitting next to me and I were joking that if they brought us a vat of it, we'd just keep going. A pork ragù was our second course, a meat-lover's heaven that included sausage and chorizo that was clearly simmered down for hours, daubed with house-made ricotta. This was a prix fixe meal, but I should note that they accommodated vegetarians and vegans too; I was seated near someone who went with the vegan option, and they adjusted her salad dressing and provided a baked squash entree that looked great. And our dessert of chocolate cake with strawberries and cream turned out to be gluten-free and vegan (coconut cream), and it was wonderful! High praise to the chef and staff as well, all of whom were terrific and knowledgeable about what they were serving. This is an interesting space--a former grange hall, with the open kitchen situated on what the stage would have been--and I'm keen to come back on my own to experience the regular menu and vibe. read more

I have walked and driven by this cute building in this wonderful town for years. Not sure why I didn't try it before this year (2019). I went this summer because it's a vegan friend was visiting from out of town. We were looking for a place close by to goat yoga in Cumberland and this location in Yarmouth was the best location. We walked in and were greeted by a wonderful hostess. She immediately started to tell us about the wine special and put us at ease because we were still wearing our goat yoga clothes. The atmosphere was bright friendly and warm. There were plenty of tables and booths on a Thursday evening. They asked if we had a reservation. But it wasn't necessary. We sat down and began looking at the menu and she offered a taste of the wine special of the evening. It was delicious, and we were hooked. While we waited and reviewed the menu we were offered delicious vegan bread. It was really hard to believe it was vegan, it was so delicious, dare I say moist...lol. The menu was fantastic! There was something for everyone. Carnivores, vegans, vegetarians. I had a delicious salad with goat cheese, my husband had a wonderful hamburger, and our friend had a delicious salad, that she said was one of the best salads she's had in the area. For an appetizer I truly enjoyed the corn fritters they were crispy, sweet, savory. Parking, the lot is usually full. If you go after dinner time around 5 PM. You'll have to find street parking. Don't worry, there's plenty of parking in the general walking area to the restaurant. Whether you're a local or a visitor the restaurant is very warm and welcoming. I was there with a date. He ordered salmon which he enjoyed. I ordered the chicken pot pie. I was imagining the classic shape of an actual small pie and was looking forward to all that crust! It was a cold and snowy evening- perfect evening for cozy chicken pot pie. What arrived was an elegant dish of pot pie contents. Very flavorful and good. The crust was just one piece or slice of crust which lay across one side of the shallow bowl. It was very good. A very different take on the classic- maybe I did not read the description very well but I was somewhat disappointed. And I felt that at $30 it was pricey. In addition, I sat on the bench while my friend sat on a chair. The bench was cold and hard, so not at all hospitable. My butt got cold sitting there. If Gather does not want you to stay long, that is one good way to get you to leave soon. I think cushions would be a smart addition. I must say, the food was exemplary. We ordered the Summer salad & Mussels with our cocktails. Absolutely one of the best mussels sauces we've had, and my husband enjoyed the salad which was fresh, colorful (watermelon) and tasty with cornbread croutons. The staff were attentive & friendly, with our server twice sharing tidbits about the building (a former Masonic Lodge) & restaurant history. The piece de la resistance however, was dessert: an absolutely divine, life-changing blackberry and ginger cheesecake from a local Maker that I'm still raving about. Believe it was a new waitress "attending" us (meaning not attentive at all) She took our orders and was gone for 50 minutes. 50. Minutes. In that 50 minutes I waited for a water refill. Didn't get one. My stomach grew hungrier. I grew hangrier. My stomach started digesting itself. I guess in that 50 minutes the cooks were waiting for the chickens to lay their eggs. I ordered a salmon Benedict so I guess I was waiting for someone to catch the salmon. My boyfriend ordered a vegetable omelette special - guess he had to wait for the vegetables to grow... Ok, okay - I'm being a huge Jerk here, but seriously - 50 MINUTES FOR BREAKFAST!? I almost left. I never leave...but I almost did. I was beyond pissed. You would think the waitress would apologize for the wait or something? No. She gave us our food and went on her way. She wasn't even busy. She was standing on top of the staircase having more of a conversation with the chefs than she ever had with us. I really, really wanted this to be better. I've been 3 times now over a course of two years. After seeing a friend's post that looked delicious, I decided to try it again in April. I really want to like Gather. The ambience is stunning and the food is beautiful. It's just so overpriced. We didn't get the breakfast sandwich, but it's $19? For reference, a breakfast sandwich at legendary Balthazar in New York City is only five dollars more. And this is Yarmouth, not SoHo. We did get the mushroom toast with an egg on top, huevos rancheros, and the parfait. Everything is styled beautifully. The mushroom toast had nice flavor but the bread didn't seem toasted and the dish was served cold (but with a quickly cooling egg in between chilled ingredients) -- not the comforting dish one wants at brunch. The huevos rancheros again had nice enough flavor but was not particularly unique or remarkable and was a small portion for a dish that is usually generously sized. The parfait had a panna cotta base and was quite sweet -- tasty overall but not a brunch portion or reasonable price for the amount served, this would fit better on the dessert menu. Our party was hungry after we left and stopped at Rosemont down the street to fill up on pastries. The shining star at our meal was the Switchel & Soda, a ginger, maple, and vinegar sparkling drink that was delicious and served in a charming mason jar with caramelized citrus. Service was lukewarm. I would come back to Gather to sample more drinks (cocktails in the past have been excellent) but won't be coming back for brunch any time soon. read more

At first I was REALLY disappointed because I came for the corned beef hash I saw on the menu, but they just removed it as of TODAY. However, they now have red flannel hash instead. GET THIS. It's corned beef hash with beets. It's amazing. My scrambled eggs were perfect and their gluten-free toast is from a small New England bakery. My husband loved his Brussels hash but wished there were more Brussels. We split the maple creme brulee for dessert and it was stellar! Service was very attentive and friendly. Gather is a neat place, it's all in one big room with the kitchen located in full view and essentially on a stage. They do what they do very good. We enjoyed the unique atmosphere and the tasty starters. Service was good. We found the portions were smaller than we expected and pricey. Beer selection was limited. We stopped in to get out of the heat at Clamfest and ordered the Deviled Eggs and the Rosemary Fries. Both were outstanding! read more

This is one of those classic examples where I'm torn between a 3 and a 4 - so, let's call this a 3.5? Here's why the wiffle-waffle between the two ratings: ****4 Star: The Service, Atmosphere, Food + Service: We had one young server for our very large party. And he mostly did a fantastic job - he was patient, he was accommodating, he was knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients, and he had a smile on his face the whole darn time. + Atmosphere: I agree with what other reviewers said... this feels like a really charming, upscale Elks Lodge. Or like a tavern you might enter in an RPG set in a fictional medievalesque time. Also, the "stage" where the chefs are is kind of cool (and doesn't come off pretentious at all which it could when you're spotlight yourself like that). + Food: . Sunchoke Tots with Truffle Ketchup ($8): These instantly have become one of my favorite foods. Sunchokes, for those of you not in the know, are also known as Jerusalem Artichokes. They're a fibrous tuber that are sort of like a cross between a potato and an artichoke in both texture and flavor. Anyway, Gather serves them up slightly smashed, slightly fried and alongside some truffle ketchup. And I ate just about all of them from the four orders on our table. Are you gonna eat that? No. THEN IT'S MINE. Nom nom nom... (side note: it's seriously too bad these are seasonal, but it's seriously awesome Gather is so conscious about serving things that are). ***3 Star: Also the Service, Atmosphere, Food - Service: While the young server did a great job, he had a difficult time figuring out who ordered what when it came time to split the bill despite us telling him ahead of time who ordered what. Also (I know we were a large party and this is probably why, but...) our food came out very sporadically. Nobody at the table could figure out who was going to get what next (some folks were already finishing their desserts while other folks were just receiving their dinner). It was terribly inconsistent. - Atmosphere: Because there was an acoustic guitarist when we came, my large party - who was sat nearly in front of the musician - could barely hear each other. - Food: . Deviled Eggs with Saffron & Paprika ($5): All I could taste was paprika. A mouthful of creamy texture from the yolk, and tons of paprika. . Apple & Cheddar Fritters with Onion Jam ($6): Was disappointed with these, too, as I didn't really feel like they tasted very apple or cheddar-y. They mostly tasted like fried balls of greasy dough. Although, the onion jam was really, very tasty (I could imagine topping brie with it and enjoying with a rosemary cracker)! . Lentil-Goat Cheese Risotto with Beet and Pickled fennel ($19): I wanted to love this. But it missed the mark in my opinion for a couple reasons. Because the lentils, risotto, and beets had such a strong earthy flavor, the dish needed a bit more goat cheese for a pop of tang. Also this was highly under-seasoned. We ended up getting marinated olives at the last minute, and I'm glad we did because the salt from them really helped bring out the flavors in this meal. Anyway, I definitely think this is one of those places where you need to just go and have your own experience. Because there is a lot of good happening here. On a rainy Sunday morning in April, a warm and hearty brunch accompanied by a side of live bluegrass music may just be the answer to everything. My friends/classmates and I had won a silent auction brunch with faculty, and Gather was definitely a great find! If you're looking for a relaxed and comfortable place with an upscale feel, this is it. The crowd varied from families with small children to elderly couples, and it was clear that everyone was enjoying themselves. The live music begins at 11am on Sundays, and it was amazing how the everyone would stop to applause when each song ended. It was great background noise that never distracted from the conversation, and yet everyone still knew they were there. Onto the food... the building looks like an old church or schoolhouse, and you can see the kitchen from everywhere! While I usually love breakfast and eggs benedicts, I opted for the Gather Reuben on this cold, hungry morning of mine. I believe it was corned beef on rye, with onions and swiss cheese, with a LARGE side of french fries! The portion was much larger than I expected, and it was definitely tasty, albeit peppery. I also had a glass of their carrot/orange juice blend, and it was wonderfully delicious! Now if I were to go again... I'd be torn between ordering the Vegetarian Eggs Benedict w/ Ham or their Smoked Salmon sampler w/ salad. Absolutely everything that was ordered at my table looked DELICIOUS and I kind of wish I had ordered a more breakfast-y food! They also had a Peach & Vanilla Bean bellini on the menu that sounded delicious, but apparently the flavors were very light. Yarmouth? Who goes to to Yarmouth? Sara N. and friends, that's who. After browsing through the internet, we stumbled upon this hidden gem in Yarmouth called Gather. But we debated...would it be worth the 15 minute drive from Portland? Why go here when Portland has tons of great restaurants of its own? Well we went. From Portland to Yarmouth! I typed in the address into my phone, and 15-20 minutes later, Google Maps brought me to someone's house, or so I thought. This operation actually, indeed, takes place in a fancy home. I was pleased to see that there was not a large crowd, and compared to downtown Portland, parking was a breeze. I was greeted by a courteous staff who, as many people in my large group pointed out, were extremely knowledgeable about the daily specials and all items on the menu. We were also brought fancy water and free bread. The bread was thick, hearty, and tasty. The olive oil on the side was a nice touch as well. "Slow and steady wins the race" should be the theme of this restaurant. Speed was not a strong-suit of my visit. Service took awhile - for drinks, food, and the bill -, but it was always worth it (except for the bill). Legendary Canadian Seb1 and I both had a veggie burger with goat cheese ($14). It was phenomenal to say the least. Even as a meat-lover, I could dig this burger. But surprisingly, the pickle was a game changer. It was so unique, and it cannot be described in words. Seb1 & the gang agreed. I was also fortunate to try M. Asta's Tuna Tar Tar pizza. It tasted fancy. If the Queen of England could order a pizza, I assume it would be this. It was $17 and a daily special. Most of their pizzas are within the $9-$14 range. But then came the reason this place isn't getting 5 stars besides the speed: the bill. This place is great - fine hospitality, fine atmosphere, and finer food - but you'll pay for it. To give you an idea: soup is $7, most beers are $6-$10, and most entrees are $19-$26 (pizza and burgers are a little cheaper though). But staff was accommodating and able to spit our bill, even though it's not something they normally do for large groups. Although this place wasn't cheap nor fast, the food and service were top-notch. If you have the money, this is an ideal place for a date or family meal. Plus, you don't have to worry about Portland's horrendous parking and overcrowding of restaurants. I would definitely come back here. read more

We have been to Gather many times over the years. In warm weather, there is deck seating. Inside, there are small, medium and one long large table for Gathering. There's also a corner for a small group to have a drink and sit in comfy chairs. While some things on the menu seem rather expensive, most are reasonable but everything we have had has been wonderful, some of the best food like it we've ever had. The menu changes to reflect seasonal items. The service is so great. If we felt we didn't get enough of something, like the raspberry marscapone dip for the little donut dessert, more was provided, no problem. I got a small plate of polenta with mushroom sauce that was fabulous and a decent portion, almost enough for me for dinner. With it was a salad that was so fresh and dressed just right. My husband got the pasta of the day ($27 - seemed a bit high) - house made ravioli with crab and ricotta in a broth that was so delicious and a little salad served on top. With a spoon for that broth and the delicious, pillowy bread served to help finish it, that's all he needed (with a little help from me). Memorable meals in the past have included wild mushroom risotto, soups, sandwiches and more. For truly delicious food, warm atmosphere, friendly and helpful waitstaff, Gather is a winner and has stood the test of time. read more
