It's a beautiful almost spring night so why not adventure for some food with the bro.. we decided on Thayer St.. and for us Rhode Islanders that is a long 15 minute drive from Johnston The restaurant atmosphere is cafeteria style seating where you order at the counter and they'll bring your order out to you. I had to tone it down and not order two meals for myself so instead ordered more appetizers.. Started with the Original Corn Dogs, Steamed Pork Dumplings , Spicy Edamame , and a small order of their advertised Honey Garlic Wings (beware that the wing options are at the front counter and not on the printed menu). The corn dogs were crispy with a thin style hotdog. The dumplings were flavored with herbs/spices and not just plain. The edamame was covered in what tasted like delicious pickled mildly spicy pimental peppers. The honey garlic wings came out hot, crispy and the sauce was finger-licking good. I was legit scraping the empty wing try with a spoon to savor the fresh garlicky/savory/sweet sauce. We both decided to dive into a Dumpling Kimchee Ramen.. Of course I added rice cakes and vegetables.. it came out steaming hot and def burned my mouth on it but it was worth it I've never had kimchi in my soup but I definitely enjoyed the flavor. So this is a repost since I realized this place is also Soban as well - after a long night of Brown's annual Campus Dance, our party of twelve found ourselves craving some food in the chilly rain. We came across this Korean fried chicken joint on the ever-popular Thayer Street, and at around 10:30pm on a Friday night, we were one of the only ones in the restaurant, so we were immediately seated. You can order up at the front from their extensive menu ranging from various types of Korean fried chicken to more classic Korean fare (such as bibimbap and soft tofu stew) to Korean street food like Ddeok-Bokki and corndogs. The owner was a Korean halmeoni and she was absolutely hilarious - she conversed with us in both Korean and English, and was more than happy to put up with our rambunctious group. We opted for 24 pieces each ($46 for a 24pc) of their Golden Original Wings as well as their Hot Spicy Wings. We also got an order of Ddeok-Bokki ($16.95) and Veggie Soft Tofu Stew ($14) for the table, as well as soju and beers all around (there's a large variety of Korean sojus in the fridge!). The wings were great on a cold night, especially when paired with the soju and beer (ever heard of chimaek? It's a combination of chicken and maekju, which is Korean for beer).The Golden Original flavor wings are simple dry wings with a perfect ratio of crispy breading to juicy chicken, with a good amount of meat on the bone. Their Hot Spicy Wings (3/3 hot chili peppers on the menu!) live up to their name, but aren't unbearably hot - they're the same chicken but tossed in a delightfully hot yet tangy and sweet sauce. They're fairly expensive for wings, but since they're both meaty and expertly fried, I won't complain. The ddeok-bokki wasn't bad, with chewy rice cakes in a sweet and spicy chili reduction sauce, although it was a small portion for the price. We enjoyed that it came with fish cakes and a boiled egg, which is an unexpected bonus of protein in a usually carb-heavy dish. The veggie soft tofu stew was pretty disappointing - it just seemed like they dumped chili powder, random vegetables, and some soft tofu in a pot and then called it a day. This was a great stop for some good Korean junk food on a late night, with friendly service and reliably good chicken. The owner was incredibly kind and let us stay until midnight, even though the restaurant's hours say that it closes at 11pm. When I first tried bbq's fried chicken, I was blown away by the moist, juicy chicken and ridiculously crispy skin. However, each time I've gone back, my experience has gotten progressively worse. My most recent visit was sadly nothing like the first. I ordered my favorite - the secret spicy wings. When I got home, the chicken was completely soggy and incredibly dry. I would have rather had KFC. For almost $2 a wing, I was so disappointed. There seems to be a real issue with order timing. Either it takes forever to come out of the kitchen (30+ minutes) or it comes out way to quick (probably because they had extra wings lying around waiting to be served) and is completely soggy by the time you pick them up. The weirdest eating out experience ever. We waited for the order. The lady waited behind cashier counter without telling us we need order there. It's been 15 minutes since we sat done.....I regret not leaving cause the seafood pancake was not fully cooked. Inside the pancake is half liquid and outside is over-burned. Spam rice tastes okay just the rice kind of cold in several blocks shape. Look like it was from left over. Two customers came in and left because no one talked to them. I was excited to hear the BBQ chicken open here in Providence ! I usually eat over at the NYC k-town location so I was excited to hear they came here to Providence. This use to be just soban and now it has become a collaboration between the two restaurants. There are two different menus on the TV behind the counter. They opened up this Tuesday and because they are new I would strongly reccommend to order ahead because the chicken takes about 20-30mins to make. Also, there isn't much room to wait inside and look at the menu because of the the limited amount of space. They have blocked out the dining area. At most 3 people can fit inside socially distanced. The wings are amazing ! Haha I went on the second day of opening and the following day and tried the honey soy garlic wings, cheesiling wings, and the Gangjeong wings. I loved the honey soy garlic flavor and is usually my go to flavor. The honey garlic wings was a bit strong on garlic but I didn't mind it. The Gangjeong wings are slightly sweet with a kick in the end . But the cheesiling was a dry rub and I wasn't a fan of it because I am not a dry rub person. My daughter and her friends are freshman at Brown University. They were treated so rudely by the staff here on their very first visit, and I'm so disappointed in the way that the employees acted towards them. They purchased their food and as they sat down at a table to eat, one of the employees demanded that they leave and take the food to go. My daughter noted that there were two other families eating their food onsite (both happen to be Asian), and she had just opened her ramen to add hot sauce that was sitting on the table. The employee asked why her food was out and then forced the group to leave immediately. My daughter and her friends happen to be brown-skin girls with natural hair (locs). I've lived in a college town (UMD) all my life, and this type of behavior would not be tolerated in College Park. This is no way to welcome students to the Brown University community. I urge you not to patronize this place until they create an environment that is inclusive of ALL patrons of every race, age, and background.
