You can't go wrong with bone in chicken biryani for $5- we to go this to the office for lunch almost once a week! They have one of the best halwa puri I've ever had as well. Food is consistent but beware! Of! Time! Food takes a longgggg time and whatever time they quote on the phone make sure to double it. It works out every time I double the time. I think that's the big reason why the ratings aren't better. Food takes forever. I wasn't sure what to think of the decor... As soon as we walked in, there were these 3 weird red/yellow/orange flame looking decorations that looked like something out of a dollar store. There was no general decor/color theme either so that was a bit of a turn-off. We ordered the boti roll, which was AMAZING. It had so much flavor and was simply delicious! We also ordered the fresh mango shake, which was pretty good! Naan was fresh and delicious! Grilled chicken/Malai chicken was decent. Chicken burger, I wouldn't recommend, bc it was basically just the grilled chicken in a bun with some mayo. ABCD they call me; American Born Confused Desi. That's Hindi for whitewashed. And in most respects my Desi friends are right. But nobody ever told my palate. So I've had the uncomfortable fate - several times now - of bringing people who should know this food better than me to a place they have never hear of with a confusing name. And ordering for our group (because I want to try a bit of everything and because you should ONLY order this stuff family style). And nailing it. Every. Damn. Time. Technically BBQ King is not Indian food, its Pakistani. And its very authentic food. Having grown up on a lot of Indian food (and frequent drives to Berkley for Pakistani food) I firmly believe that this adds a point or two on the deliciousness spectrum. It also skews what you want to order and might factor in when you use to toilet later. Tandoori and grilled items, biriani, karahi curries are going to be best in class. Goat and lamb are going to be delicious. Its going to be spicy in the best way possible. I start with the sugarcane juice, cause my dad has a habit and the stuff reminds me of my childhood. Like most good juices you want to ignore the slightly green unpalatable color and focus on the health benefits. The version at BBQ King is squeezed (err extracted) fresh in back. Sugarcane juice tastes of sugarcane which in turn tastes a mildly sweet, and grassy but in a good way. It also tastes of ginger. When the machine broke a few months ago it caused a mild crisis amongst my friends, but its been fixed for a few visits now. The mix plate is delightful. It contains a selection of meats (pieces of tandoori chicken, assorted sausages, boti) yogurt marinated and grilled. The ambitious restaurantour who decided to name this place BBQ King absolutely knows what hes doing behind a spatula, and the mix plate gives you a bit of everything to prove it. Goat korma karahi is a tad small but absolutely delicious, its the sort of thing that I could eat night after night and never tire of. A gravy thats spicy, a touch creamy, and oily, served over fork tender bone in goat. Marrow sucking delicious goat. Lamb shank nihari is a good option for a decent sized table. The shank is tender but a bit greasy compared to the leaner goat cuts, and the nihari is richer gravy. Biriani is fantastic. Rice with chunks of meat, its best eaten as a side with all of the above to soak up the spiceness and the sauce. I prefer the goat but the chicken is plenty good if that's your thing. The oversized fresh off the tandor naan also makes a good choice and is mostly used for the same purpose as rice, soaking up the heat of the spicy gravy dishes. If you insist on some vegetable options, the dal has been on point for 2 out of 3 visits but was a bit on the bland side once. Most of the other vegetables I've had there are on point, but generally we skip them because they just take up valuable stomach real estate. Get most of the above to feed about 6 people for about $20 a pop. Its good stuff, your tummy will thank me later. read more

Host was a rude guy that hovered over tables and took orders. We ordered Kunma Gohst, beef Bihari kebab, and special omelette with sugar cane service. Took about 30 min for food to arrive. Didn't take any pics of food. Bihari kebab was dry with additional graham masala served on top. Horrible taste!! Sugar cane juice had an odor. Khunna gohst was decent. We walked in and shortly after we sat down (the place was empty) and I could smell a moldy/mildew smell coming from their a/c unit. It's hot a healthy smell... On the upside the service was friendly and the food was tasty. It was like home cooking in Pakistan or India, yes I've been... We both wanted a Chana dish (chick pea) and we lucked out. While siting there it became apparent that they were cleaned out the night before... end of Ramadan holiday. Flavor is great, portion size is great, all cooked fresh and Halal. "Kind of sparse for a throne room." I thought as we entered, at the head of an army of 5000, through the glass door. In fact, I felt a little lost without a royal herald to announce me, so I announced myself. "Dan H. and retinue seeks an audience with the King!" The BBQ king came out, brandishing a scepter of tandoori chicken and told me to be seated (perhaps because I was being so loud) and the royal banquet commenced. BBQ King is relatively simple from the outside and the interior is sparse but functional. The menu, however, has a decent amount of depth and there's plenty of delicious-sounding things to try. We started with the lowly Potato Samosa ($3.99 for 2), oft fried during a previous administration and then reheated to the consistency of a hockey puck for your culinary 'enjoyment'. Not so at BBQ King! The crispy shell had all those wonderful bubbles that mark a really great, fast fry, and the filling was soft, pillowy and creamy, with just a hint of spice. Not stopping there, they serve it atop a chick pea curry with plenty of thin red onion slices and cilantro. Absolutely delicious! Next, let's get something straight: they serve a delicious Chicken Biryani for only $2.99 as a take-out special! It's $5.99 if you eat in. Quite an attractive offer if you need a quick dinner to go. They call it 'boneless' although the chunks of chicken did have some bone in them (which I prefer), but there weren't any small bone chips in the rice that you sometimes find in biryani, so maybe that's what they mean. The Haleem ($8.99) is a beef dish stewed so long it practically disintegrates into a ultra-savory, umami-packed bowl of paradise. This is a seriously good spread, and works with rice, biryani, or naan. It has a subtle heat, but I wouldn't call it spicy. Highly recommended. As I mentioned in my review for Alounak, kabobs are a sore spot for me: rarely cooked well, I usually have to eat raw vegetables sandwiched between overdone and dry meat and then I just want to fling myself into a volcano. Again, not so at BBQ King! The beef Seekh Kabob ($1.99) is made from finely ground beef molded around a skewer and grilled. I've had a ton of these things and usually been let down (the worst offenders can be dry and lacking in flavor), but the ones here are tender, juicy, and completely suffused with a lemony, garlicy, peppery seasoning that is unbelievably good! These are the new bar. I cried a single tear, realizing that so many meals had passed without sporting one of these on the side, and I vowed to make a change (new year's resolution?). Always one to 'eat my veggies', I ordered the Palak Paneer ($6.99), assuming that the chunks of cheese would serve to bolster the health benefits of the spinach. PROVE TO ME THAT IT DOESN'T! This was a wonderful dish with an earthy, almost cinnamon aftertaste, and I couldn't get enough of it. Finally, the Chicken Tikka ($2.99 for a leg quarter) blew us all away. I've had so many forgettable fire-engine-red drumsticks at other restaurants, but this one was crusted with a bright citrus and spice rub, and the chicken itself was juicy and perfectly cooked. Easily the best I've ever had, and it handily illustrates why that dish was invented in the first place. You will fiend for this at all hours, but it will betray you, revealing your midnight tryst with bright red streaks of spice rub across your sheets and face. Lastly, a few quibbles: no rice or naan comes with your dishes, and you have to order this separately. I say order the biryani to go (only $1 more than a smaller portion of regular rice?!) and have a feast at home. The wait can be on the longer side (grilled items taking the longest), so call ahead if you're starving. This place is an absolute gem in the community, and we've yet to have a bad or even a forgettable dish here. I thanked the king for the honor he bestowed on us with that amazing banquet and then shocked the court by screaming, as we left, ,"BUT WE'RE IN MURICA AND DON'T BOW TO NO KINGS SO GTFO STARS N STRIPES FOREVER!" This was my first visit to BBQ King and I really enjoyed it. I went with a Meet-Up group and most of the were also in for the first time. I believe most loved the food as much as I did. There are several chicken dishes to choose from, goat, beef kebabs, biryani and more. The group I was in had a special buffet so we had the chance to sample several items. After dinner we were served lovely kulfi (or South Asian style ice cream). Wait service can be a little slow but the good thing is you still get great freshly made food. Also it would be good to see it nicely decorated with Pakistani decor. I definitely want to return to this place as they've got a really good menu to choose from. read more

This is not a review about food but about a consultation we had with one of the managers/owners of this place for catering a wedding reception. If you are considering them for this purpose, you should probably go with someone with more experience. I came here with my fiance and his parents to discuss our menu. There was only one other table of two during this slow weeknight, but the host acted like he was too busy to take time to talk to us. After we presented our sample menu (which we already priced at other places to get an idea of what to expect), he was easily $7-8 dollars/head above our next highest quote. But, that's not the worse part. The host was not professional at all and started berating me with questions about the cost of food when I asked why the price was so high per head. And, he tried to add the cost of catering insurance to our final quote, which we never came across in out 5 other consultations. His justification was that he mentioned that a local Islamic center, which used him for catering, allowed him to roll the cost of the insurance into their bill. What?! It seemed from our consultation that they do not do a lot of professional catering. If you want to overpay and be treated rudely, then I guess BBQ King fits the bill. Amazing! First I wanna say the quality of the food was way better than I expected. Not only did the food come out quickly (10-15 min) but it was fresh. It was hot and stayed warm throughout the whole time we ate. Now as some know once you order curry it will get cold quick but not BBQ King! Plus the service was exceptional, it was easy to get extras and the server was kind and quick! They had a very friendly and welcoming environment in which I felt comfortable. Won't accept your Groupon on lunch on weekend even though it says "valid any day". If you ask why they will point you to a "Groupon not valid on weekend" sign on the inside of the door (not outside) so that you only see it on your way out but not way in. That says something about the way of doing their business. The waitress even told us that people abuse Groupon so we have stopped selling them but if you think about it it's the business thats abusing the customers by cheating them of the Groupon rules. Service sucks. People were getting up from their table to get attention of the waiters if they needed anything. I even saw the cook drenched in sweat (no hair cap, no apron) walk outside to grab bottled water. Wonder how the food is cooked inside? To save a $8 on Groupon they lost a customer and I am sure many more to come. Save yourself from embarrassment. Go somewhere else. We've been eating here since it opened up and still go to it. We usually get the biryani to go but since their move we started eating there due to the fact it is nowhere near as congested as it location it had prior and way more parking. It's also now really close to our house! The portions sizes themselves are really big. During Ramadan they would have free iftar which included samosas, beautifully cut fruit, Dahi baray, cholay chaat, and a glass of roohafza. Every thing else you would have to order or you could purchase the buffet. The owner almost always comes up and checks up on his guest and one time one of the waiters held the door open for my grandmother, who has a hard time walking was helped to her seat then given a free bottle of water. Overall It's a good choice for Pakistani food in the Richardson-Garland area. read more

I have been to this place three times. All three times I had a wonderful experience. The chef at this restaurant was extremely nice and welcoming. When I first came this location the chef shared with me that he was from New York. He offered me to taste something different from what I ordered as well. It is definitely not upscale, but to be honest I really don't want my Indian food from an upscale location. The food that I enjoyed the most from all of my visits were the goat biryani and the tandoori chicken. I know tandoori chicken is very common but it was cooked very well. The goat was tender and the rice was made to perfection. I love that when I asked for more spice that is exactly what I got! The cardamom seeds in the biryani was nice as well. For the tandoori chicken the flavor and tenderness of the chicken stood out for me. Some places can really over cook the chicken and expect a curry sauce to make the dryness all better. This chicken was definitely not dry. Oh I must add that I also enjoyed the chicken stuffed naan. You can get the naan like 4 or 5 different ways I think. The portion sizes are good also. You will leave full and plus be able to take something home. There are so many different items I will be trying in the future. I recommend coming to this place. You will not be disappointed. During the week they do stop and pray for about an hour so expect a bit of a wait during about 12:30-1pm I think. Having driven by this place a few times I wanted to stop in with my wife and try it out. We ordered a palak paneer, chicken and kofta kebabs, plain rice, a BBQ King special with beef and 2 naans. The palak paneer was salty, the special was okay but not properly priced for the portion you get, the rice was okay, and about the kebabs... The menu says you get two. What they neglect to say is they take what would be a normal sized kebab that you'd get anywhere and cut it in half. Presto! Two kebabs. Also the skewer they use is thick which leaves the inside more hollow so you get less meat than you'd expect on top of the aforementioned 2 kebab thing. This next point may be nitpicking, but I always feel you should get a naan included with your meal and not have to order it separate. That being said the naan was good, and the only thing I ate that I truly enjoyed which is why they get 2 stars instead of 1. I was really disappointed in my meal, and I don't see myself coming back here when Jasmine's is down the street and much better. read more

Went there yesterday evening, the food tasted bland! I ordered chicken seekh kabab, chicken haleem and chanay. The haleem tasted like boil shred chicken without any spices in it. The kabab were not so tasty either. The chanay quantity was not a full serving. I asked the waiter this is not full, he said okay if you want I can get some more. I said sure if you can do so that will be great! After 10 minutes, he comes back and says this is all we give as one order of quantity. Food is OK here, but the service is really really slow. We waited about an hour on a Saturday for 3 dishes and 5 naans. We ordered 4 dishes and the waiter forgot the 4th. Since the service is so slow, we never mentioned the dish they forgot. The taste of the dish is only OK compared to the Desi food in northern Virginia, but my son says this restaurant has the best taste compared to the other Desi restaurants around here (Dallas TX).
