Simple good 'que. It's not the best I've had, not by far, but it's good honest barbeque. I ate some of it with sauce and some without. Better with their sauce!! However, the ribs are good either way - a good tug without falling clean off and no need to pull your teeth out. Sides are basic southern classics - green beans, half ears of corn, baked beans... They also had fairly decent pecan pie. Staff was friendly but left you alone when you were eating. Drinks are self service but that means I get to make it my way!! Amazed at how many people came in on a Monday night to get take out and even more so at how many came in to get multiple slabs of ribs and multiple pounds of sausage. It's a testament to their consistency that their regulars keep coming back. Just a tip to the owners about their brisket - order your meat with the fat cap still on it and smoke it with be fat cap on (if you cut most of the way through it and season your rub under the cap it will still get all that yummy flavour). Trim it off just before serving and you'll have a great product. The brisket was good but needed that extra bit of moisture to make it really good!! This place is only getting one star just because of the one lady working the register she was nice and polite if it wasn't for her then I would want to be giving them negative stars for reasons 1. My buddy found a hair in his Mac and cheese 2. The food was not great the Mac and cheese was mushy dry and flavorless, the potato salad had a taste that just didn't taste like it was supposed to be in the potato salad. I had some ribs that I will admit the flavoring was good I'll give them that BUT they were super dry and hard. My husband had their beef sandwich with the same sides as me but he also said that the sandwich was dry even after adding BBQ sauce. And with every one in our group who went with us also agreed the meat was well flavored but super dry and sides flavorless 3. The restaurant is definitely in need of a remodel I get that they wanna have that backyard family BBQ feel but the inside just made me feel like I was in a low end cafeteria. Now number 4. Is why I will never return to this restaurant one of my buddies who me and my husband see like family went to simply ask politely if there ribs were beef or pork for the only reason that he cannot eat pork he's tried before and gotten extremely sick to the point he has never eaten pork again so when he asked the man serving the food (behind what looks like a cafeteria line). He told him that they only had pork so my buddy just said ok and chose not to get anything (and I understand why not just order something that was beef or chicken well there was nothing else that seemed appetizing to him so he chose to just hang out with us) But as he walked away from the ordering counter the man serving food started talking sh*t about him with the people next in line they were laughing making fun of him for not wanting pork and when they seen him jus sit down with the rest of us they were just staring at him like if he had to leave (I'm just glad he chose to ignore them because god know it was getting hard for me to I can't stand rude people mean for no reason) But when I seen that for me I see that as bad business and bad service. Now I get people are entitled to their own opinions and thoughts but some things shouldn't be said when it was a simple question and especially when you don't know the reason for someone not eating a certain food and don't bring random people in smack talking it's a bad look for business. Monroe, LA has some great BBQ and BBQ West definitely qualifies. Easy to order - tell the person behind the counter what kind of meat you would like and you pick out your sides. I have been here a few times and there has been a few times when they were busy that I have had to wait for someone to check me out. I always get sweet tea with BBQ and BBQ West has some good sweet tea. There is only one BBQ sauce and it has a really good tangy flavor to it. It's vinegar based. I've had pork, beef, and ribs. The pork has been dry at times but the ribs and beef are juicy and moist. I always get baked beans and potato salad...both are some of the best I've ever had. Potato salad is mustard with black pepper and really chill and creamy. Baked beans are really meaty and tangy. I always have a hard time finishing my plate so the portion size and value you get is great. The one thing about BBQ West, Danken Trail, and Podnuh's is that they all taste very similar to me. I used to love eating here , week after week I would get the chopped beef sandwich and get their great beans . The past few times I've been have been a let down. It's never consistent . The beans would be cold , or the meat chewy . My last visit was my final. The lady chopping up the beef had a bad attitude . There was such a little amount of meat on my sandwich it appeared to be only a bun. So I payed the additional price for "extra" meat which was still even less then the normal amount . Stopped here on the way back to College Station (driving back on a loss is never fun) we all decided we wanted BBQ. There were mixed reviews pretty much all over Monroe. We decided to go with West- and we sure were happy we did. Took a little bit longer to get through the line than we expected, but everybody thoroughly enjoyed their food. Coletta was the very rude woman cutting the meat. I watched her slide over a freshly smoked brisket, scrape off all the fatcap, slice off the point and cut out an inch of meat on both sides and made a slice all the way down the big side....by the time she was done she picked up what she had cut off and it was 2 handfuls cupped together of the best meat. I asked her why she did that and I was informed that " That's how I do it." I told her that that was the part I liked and it was like it gave her kind of satisfaction. Our return trip did not disappoint. The chopped brisket was perfect. Very nice flavor and only the choicest cut. The bun is the size of a dessert plate and packed with meat. Baked beans are wonderfully meaty and full of flavor. The coleslaw and potato salad are uniquely flavored. It was all finger licking good and well worth the drive from Maryland. On our trip back home we stopped at dreamland BBQ in Alabama. No comparison. BBQ West is best hands down. read more
