They've got Hexa-copters and Quad-copters and, touring their facility, there was no shortage of sophisticated equipment and hi-tech gadgetry. But cinematography is not why I needed a drone. I was looking for a drone for the other side of the camera. I'm a propmaster at 20th Century Fox and I was in need of a drone that could carry a severed head for several scenes in a TV show. I needed a drone-provider that could navigate FAA regs and the vendor approval process at Fox... and could, without fail, repeatedly remove a five-pound (fake) severed head from a body of water and fly it around in close proximity to a 73-person film crew. There are so many rules regarding unmanned aircraft (drones) and, truth be known, I don't know much about FAA Compliance and 333 Exemptions... but I didn't have to because they did. (Though I know a helluva lot more now than I had before.) But, in my opinion, Aerial Photography is nothing compared to gauging wet-weight/dry-weight of a silicone-and-resin head, manufacturing an RC robotic claw with waterproof servos and applying custom graphics to TWO on-camera drones... in about 9 days. That's nine days for concept meetings, claw designing, show-and-tells, test flights, more meetings and numerous changes. On one surreal afternoon we had a meeting to discuss the meeting schedule. Meetings with writers, with directors and producers, with Make-up FX and Special FX, meetings with Art Dept and Graphics, meetings with Fox Safety and Locations and Grip Dept, Elec Dept, Playback and Camera. They met no less that six times with the Prop Department. And, in all seriousness, what came through in all of those meetings was their dependability, commitment to safety, and their commitment to getting the shots we needed.
