I had a great experience here. On the way to work I noticed my battery light came on and began to loose air conditioning. I live nearby and knew this place was close, so I pulled in to see what I could figure out knowing if it was something serious at least it was in a repair shop parking lot. I realized when I popped the hood that my serpentine belt was completely gone. The place opened early around 7 and was out the door with my car repaired by 8:30. They were affordable and polite. This review could have been drastically different if the owner Gary had not stepped in.Gary and I had an agreement that I was to be called BEFORE any work was done. Fast forward to Richard a long time employee, who should have known better, goes and completes the ,unauthorized work and called me to come and get my car. When I protested about not being called he tells me OK I WILL PULL OUT ALL OF THE PARTS WE PUT IN AND YOU CAN COME AND GET YOUR CAR. Can you believe that crap. By the time I got to the shop Gary had arrived. When I told him of the conversation he said come in my office and let's work this out. Wow a auto repair shop that will work out the problem. We sat and went line by line of charges. He said ok if you had been called, as he and I had agreed to, what would have been different. We came up with a mutual fair to both of us agreement. Faulks let's just say it was hundreds less. All because some employee jumped the gun without details and then says IF I DO NOT LIKE IT HE WILL PULL OUT ALL THE PARTS AND GIVE IT BACK. ...REALLY.. I will tell you I will go back to this shop without hesitation. They are honest and do great work. Wile I was there a tow truck pulled up with a car. I asked the driver how much it cost to bring the car in. He said $125 all the way from western branch on the other side of Portsmouth. As if there is no auto repair closer. After using other repair shops in the area, I happened upon this one a couple years ago while it was still on Laskin Road...and I'm so glad I did! I take all my cars there for inspections and repairs. This place has been in business for years, and for good reason, they're honest, dependable and reasonable. Case in point: my son's been having problems occasionaly with his truck not starting, so he dropped it off so they could have a look. After going through a long list, they were unable to find the problem. This cost him only $20. Now, I know at many other places where the charge would have been much, much higher because they would "have to put it on the computer" to test it, or even worse, charged a small fortune for making repairs that weren't needed. There's no where else I'd take my car now, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a good shop! read more

I keep coming back because the location is convenient to my house; however, each time I tell myself I need to find somewhere new. If I need anything other than an oil change, the work rarely gets done (either they ignore my request or don't actually fix the problem - although I'm not sure if it's because they're too busy or don't know how to fix it) and the hours are inconvenient if you work during the day. If you're looking for something basic (i.e. Oil change) and have flexibility in your schedule this place is fine. If you need something actually repaired and in a timely manner, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. read more

Customer service here is rather descent. The prices are a tad comparable/lower than most. They usually complete the work on a vehicle on time, if not earlier. I don't have any complaints yet I don't know too much about the automotive field but enough to say I don't feel like I'm being taken for a ride here (no pun intended). They are located directly on S. My neighbor accidentally scratched my truck a tiny amount and broke my taillight. I felt bad that a claim even had to be made for such a minor thing, but he didn't want to help me replace my taillight, so he made a claim. It's hard to find an auto shop that you can depend on for qaulity, honesty, and fair pricing.I worked for a few local shops and I know what kind of tom foolery can exist in an auto shop. Some places will try to take you for every dime. They just can't be trusted. That's not the case at beach auto. They explain everything thing that needs to be done and don't start until you aprove the service. Also, in my experience, the head mechanic (rich) will try to provide you with the least expensive option to keep your car running. I will never use a different auto shop. Beach Automobile Service Center came through for me again. I love that they offer a free trip check if you are getting ready to go for a road trip. I took them up on this offer, knowing that I had an oil leak that needed attention. For a few days I was a little stressed because I would call at the end of the work day and they still had not taken a look at the vehicle. This went on for 5 days, and the stress on my end kept building. I let them know that I was getting worried and they definitely took my concerns seriously and reassured me that the vehicle would be taken care of. The next day I got a call with a thorough review of all the vehicle issues. The price to repair was far cheaper than I expected. They even took care of two minor issues for free. Now the vehicle is back and in great running order!! I really appreciate their service, and low price. read more

My husband and I moved from Texas 4 1/2 years ago and we started using Beach Auto because it was very close to our house. I can say that we have been more than happy , not only with their service and work, but with the integrity of this shop. Where as in the past in Texas, we had felt at times work was being done when not needed, at Beach Auto they are always fair. Recently we thought that we needed something done that would have been quite expensive, and they called and said we only needed a new battery. Very very honest people. Went to Beach today as my entire electrical system was suddenly having issues & the battery would not hold a charge. AAA said it was a new battery & that they could not diagnose why it was losing the charge shortly after being turned off. Beach figures out that my 2nd battery under the passengers seat was completely flooded from Hurricane Matthew. They replaced that battery. Cleared out the water & changed me a fraction of what the dealer would have...only $45 labor plus parts. I LOVE how trustworthy & upfront/honest this mechanic shop is with me. The service of the car was quick and efficient, but the treatment I received by a high-ranking gentleman (owner or manager) was baffling. I was sent to this establishment by a used car lot who assured me that they would work out payment for my state inspection. I entered the waiting room to see no line but a very busy receptionist. I waited several minutes to let her catch up, and when she asked if I needed help, I asked if it was a good time to get a state inspection (I was told by the car lot that Beach Auto was first come-first served). She said they could do it. I explained that this used car company either had an account with them or had arranged to pay for my inspection. She looked baffled, so I showed her a photo of the car lot's business card on my phone. She asked her boss if this company had an account with them. I offered the photo on my phone to them, but the boss rudely walked away noting, "They don't have an account with us." He behaved as though I was wasting his time trying to explain the situation, leaving both me and the receptionist baffled. The fact was, the used car lot HAD called earlier and they HAD arranged to pay for it. I felt sorry for the receptionist, because she seemed as though she was having a hard time taking care of phone calls and clients picking up vehicles. I was poorly treated by the boss, and I really don't think that's an appropriate way to treat a new customer. Clearly, they have so many customers that they don't care. At least they didn't today. I'd have given zero stars if they hadn't done the work so efficiently. read more

Got in to VA for a family event after a drive from NY. Engine check light was on and this service center was recommended. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. They knew I was from out of town and as an older woman in a bad spot, I would have been an easy mark but that's Not what happened. Despite having no appointment, they got my car checked by the next morning, serviced and test drove it and determined the warning light was a malfunction. For those who don't want to read several paragraphs, the short version is they will just replace parts so they can charge you something for being foolish enough to drive into their garage, even if the part has nothing to do with what they were asked to fix.. Go somewhere else. was a customer for more than a decade ( mostly just inspections and oil changes). I always thought they were honest and quick. Until last year. Last year my car was intermittenly not starting. I paid Richard more than $300 to replace my distributor. The next day, my car died while I was driving on a busy street.. It turns out that my problem was some kind of electronic sensor, which Richard didn't charge me labor to replace. That's the least he could have done, since it seems likely there was nothing wrong with my distributor. Recently I had a leak because of a worn out hose clamp, which I replaced. After doing so, I had radiator fluid coming out from the opposite side of the engine from the hose. The next morning I took it to Beach Auto. After I parked, I checked under my car, there was no liquid. Without my authorization Richard replaced the hose ( that I'd just reclamped and inspected, so I know it wasn't leaking) and charged me $140 dollars for something I could have done myself in 15 minutes( you literally just have to unsrew two screws and tug a little). Never mind the fact that was not what I asked him to look at. When I told the woman at the desk I wanted to speak with richard about why he'd arbitrarily replaced my radiator hose, she turned to go get him, and said loudly, " Will this day ever end, I need a drink." Very professional. To have that perpetually miserable woman (I've seen her for years, never seen her even close to cheerful) behave with a complete lack of tact or professionalism, when called out on ripping me off is just unbelievable.While I was outside talking to richard, she billed my credit card. Richard talked in circles about what could have caused the leak I saw which he didn't, avoiding the fact that what he "fixed" in no way addressed the leak . Richard said that he would look out for me if I still had problems, but that doesn't change the fact that he charged me for work I didn't agree to, or need . My car overheated after I got it back and after taking it to a different mechanic, it turns out the leak was coming from my water pump. If my water pump wasn't leaking when Richard looked at it, what he should have done is call and tell me he didn't see a leak, rather than replace some parts that were completely unrelated so I didn't leave his garage without paying something. I wonder if them moving to the newer much larger location has something to do with it. Are they hiring bad mechanics? Or do they just need to squeeze what they can out of people to pay the rent on the big building? Too busy pumping cars through the place to care? If either the woman behind the desk or Richard would care to discuss this matter with me you have had my number in your computer for many years, feel free to call me. I'm sure I'm not the only one who you have treated this way, I hope your business model comes back to bite you in the ass. read more

Richard is a GREAT mechanic who doesn't treat women like idiots and doesn't take advantage of us. I have recommended him to people for almost 2 decades. He will work on a problem until he finds the solution and he doesn't charge for things that are NOT broken. An honest mechanic is a wonderful thing to behold.
