According to my boyfriend, some people just don't know how to drive. Whoever said A1A was an under appreciated scenic drive thinks being enclosed by vegetation on both sides and being stuck behind the slowest drivers is pleasurable. We used to love this place, but it has seriously gone downhill recently. They are not following COVID recommendations. Employees and customers were completely PACKED in the small building. Overall, it also was dirtier than its used to be (floors, etc) rather than cleaner as many other places have become. I frequently travel from California to the Vero Beach area. I rarely miss out on an opportunity to grab breakfast or lunch at this adorable general store/deli on the beach. The subs here are amazing! The rolls are baked fresh every morning, and all the fixings are always fresh and high quality. Beyond the great food, when you walk into Beach Bites you are greeted with a smile from every member of this hard working team. I always recommend this place to my friend's who are visiting the area. Beach Bites- Wabasso- 3.0- Stars Picking up my review quest in Wabasso Beach, I found myself staring at the name put forth by my random place generator--Beach Bites. Pondering the name, all I could think of were hush puppies made of beach sand. I have seen some crazy stuff in the Sunshine State (see news coverage of "Florida Man"), but I figured that was too far out there and so reeled my overactive imagination in a tad. I found Beach Bites easily enough off of A1A located in what appears to be a renovated hotel. Thankfully, they do not sell deep-fried balls of sand, but rather breakfast, brunch, and smoothies. Walking in, I thought I had stepped into the Kwik-E-Mart of The Simpsons fame as they are also a well-stocked convenience store. Hey, who doesn't need a smoothie or a quick sandwich while picking up some beach gear? Approaching the counter, I was greeted warmly and enthusiastically by a wonderful lady named Amanda. Amanda was very polite and extremely helpful in placing our order. To that end, I asked for an order of a Kielbasa in Sauerkraut, one order of their self proclaimed homemade Macaroni and Cheese and one Cali Club sandwich. Perusing the interior while awaiting our order, I couldn't help but feel I was in a Cracker Barrel, only for beach-goers. They had racks of sunglasses, board shorts, T-Shirts, and nautical themed brick-a-brack along with other sundries. Within an acceptable amount of time, I was notified that our order was ready for pick up and sent my trusty sidekick forth to fetch our victuals. Returning with our food in Styrofoam (the environmental horror!) to go containers, we adjourned to an empty table outside and commenced to ea...er, I mean we started the review process. First up to be reviewed by my punctilious palate was the Kielbasa in Sauerkraut. As it lacked any and all grill markings, I assume the sausage was steamed, not made the preferred way by grilling over an open flame. If I had any German blood in me, this most likely would have gotten my ire up, as I don't I shrugged it off as one of those "forgive them, they know not what they do" moments. However, after one bite I quickly realized that would be the least of any concerns the German blood I don't have, would have with this "pretender." The sauerkraut did not taste very fresh and while it wasn't spoiled, it wasn't crisp and flavorful either. The Kielbasa itself was, to my surprise, exceedingly bland, one would even say "pedestrian" in its presentation to the palate. A decent Kielbasa should be complex in its savoriness and grilled for crying out loud! Alas, this, as previously stated was neither. Moving on to the order of Mac and Cheese, I was pleasantly surprised by the deeply layered flavors emerging with every bite as it hit my taste buds. This was obviously homemade as advertised and executed flawlessly. I would even say it was just as good, if not better than the homemade mac and cheese my mom made on occasion when I was younger. Yes, I just outed my moms cooking. But, in my defense I must reiterate, it was that good. The mac was boiled to the perfect al dantè and as I mentioned the homemade cheese sauce was amazing and more than made up for the lackluster meal sampled previously. Arriving at the final destination on our culinary journey into Beach Bites, I picked up the Cali Club and took a healthy bite. First thing I noticed was the real, honest to Butterball (or, in this case, Perdue) sliced turkey breast. The turkey was the real deal and immensely flavorful. The turkey was accompanied by some freshly sliced tomatoes and some end of the core iceberg lettuce. The lettuce was a bit off colored and a tad on the bitter side as it was from the spot on the head close to the core and everyone knows the succulent leaves are found further out and come hued in a not so much yellow as green. The bread was fresh and tasty, though not homemade and so definitely could have been better. All in all, it was a tasty end to a good meal. Fresh bread everyday for the delicious sandwiches. And they have HOT VEGETARIAN subs and pitas which is neat for those of us (vegetarians) who are tired of settling down with a cold lettuce, tomato and cheese sub to be able to eat with our friends. I had the veggie pita and loved it. Very generous portions and nice tasting veg ball. And they just opened a smoothie bar. I had the blue sky shake (blueberry, banana, peanut butter, yogurt) and it was rich and yummy. They have friendly staff and the owner is the nicest woman. Love coming here. BEACH BITES Excellent Subs and Wraps We traveled recently from NYC to Disney Vero Beach We were lucky enough to stumble upon this great locals place that serves fresh breakfast and lunch at great prices. ( outdoor seating which was great ) I had the muffuletta sub which is loaded with Italian cold cuts and it was delicious, my wife had a salad and my daughter had a wrap an we were all 100% satisfied . Very rude service. As soon as we walked in from spending time on the beach, we were met with ugly glares for tracking sand in, meanwhile the shop is right on the beach. Not bad, sandwiches were pretty dry, but it's pretty convenient and the prices are not bad. Don't worry about the smoothies they were not very good. Customer service in there was fine, but it is a little dirty looking and the vibe just wasn't great. While they have signs up for customers to please wear a mask, the employees inside making your food are maskless, usually unfriendly and act like you are a huge burden. As for the sandwiches, they are very hit or miss. They seem to have a high employee turnover rate and a lot of them do not look at their own menu to bother to see what is supposed to go in the sandwich and they make up their own which is quite frustrating. read more

Walked into this local spot near my new home wearing a mask to ask for a take out menu, mentioned that I was new to the area and would need a good take out spot. The older guy who was out front not wearing any protection, just pointed at the pile of menus and did not say a word. Not a good first impression. Thought I would order a sandwich until I looked behind the counter to find the entire staff maskless. I understand that it is kind of a "local" spot, but if you can't have the courtesy to go above and beyond to protect a very older population nearby, I would rather eat elsewhere. Would certainly recommend the deli just across the causeway for a much safer and friendly experience. read more

This is a great place to grab a delicious smoothie on a hot summer day. I was out riding my bicycle on a Sunday afternoon recently and got a little carried away and ended up riding a little too far. No one here was wearing a mask, including the guy making my sandwich. When I asked I was told masks were not required. WRONG. This location is in the Unincorporated Indian River County. The county commission has ruled that employees making or serving food and interacting with the public must wear a face covering. I have lived in this neighborhood and frequented this sandwich shop, under several owners/managers, for 20 years. Seeing this disregard for the law and the health and safety of their employees and customers I will not be going back. read more

This review is not about the food at beach bites, but the customer service. I have been inside this business a gazillion times over the years, but I moved away and have been gone quite some time, and now only visit with my family. I'm sure it has changed hand during that time and I must say...not for the better. I came up from the beach for a snack. I rinsed off really good bc of the sand. I dried off the best I could before entering the store. I started looking at some souvenirs in the front of the store, but I was told by the guy working there that I couldn't come to the back side of the table bc he just mopped. He put a fan out to dry the floor. I waited patiently as I looked around the store. As I stood there, a small amount of water from my suit had gathered and dripped down into my flip flops. I stood in front of the fan to dry them (it really wasnt much and didn't get on the floor). That is when, I was scolded by the man working there, which I assume is the manager or owner. His tone was so harsh, I felt like leaving immediately. I decided at that point that I would NOT purchase the hat/tshirt combo that I had been interested in, nor would i buy a sandwich or fancy cold beverage from the deli. I quickly grabbed a small bag of chips to purchase, so I could be on my way. I approached the man, and put my chips on the counter to buy. I was paying in cash. He was distracted and looking out the window behind him. He was concerned about someone who had parked in the lot of the business. He quickly rang up the chips and tossed me my change, then bolted out the door. I looked down at my hand, and noticed that he had shorted me in change. If he wasnt being such a jerk. I may have let it go. I brought it to the attention of the girl in the deli. She attempted to help me and started to pull up the transaction to review it. This is when he returned in a rant about wanting to tow someone. He seemed to be surprised that I had actually looked at my change and said something. I didn't have any pockets or a bag with me, so I just stood there with what he gave me. Hard to dispute that. I had wondered if he shorted me on purpose actually. However, they corrected the issue. You must understand that this little deli is located in the parking lot of the BEACH! Also, next to the disney resort and the only public beach DIRECTLY off the bridge. It's meant to be a convenience for beachgoers visiting wabasso beach. I'm certain that customers come in all the time with sand or water etc. I understand the safety of customers due to water on the floor, yet there was NO sign outside to say not to come in, if you possibly have one drip on your flip flop. Although, I didn't check the lot outside for parking signage, I had wondered if there was a towing sign outside. I just feel like this man / manager got bent out of shape really easily. His rude demeanor is going to cost him sales as it did in this case both in merchandise and food. Seriously, he is just a few short feet from the ocean. He needs to walk out there, take a deep breath in and let some of his built up hostility go. read more
