Overall, these needs were met by the Cabrillo Youth Center. Upon arrival, we set up our tents in designated field areas very close to the waterfront. While the "beach" is inside LA Harbor, I was generally pleased with the cleanliness of the water. No, it's not Catalina-clear, but the camp is adjacent to a wetlands preserve and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, so the water activities (which include kayaking, rowboats, and canoeing) are enjoyed in a designated area over a beautiful eel grass bed. Wish I could have dragged a lure through here for some bay bass, but didn't manage to do so. Swimming is enjoyed in the pool on site, and all visitors must take a BSA swim test to determine which activities they can enjoy. Four laps of the pool-- three on your stomach and one on your back... then float on your back for about a minute. If you pass, you're given a blue wristband: clear for all activities; if you're a beginner or non-swimmer, (red and white wristbands, respectively) you must be accompanied by a blue-band to go out on any watercraft. The camp also features a craft center, a mess hall, a Scout store, and flush toilets/restrooms. Showers are outdoor beach-style to get the sand off your body, but really, you're probably only here for a day or two. The amphitheater area is used for orientation meetings, and the camp fire. Being a "working camp," the visitors are responsible for a lot-- keeping the restrooms clean, hauling out trash to the dumpsters, and running the campfire. ... all good stuff for kids working on being more responsible. A lot of lifeguards here to support the boating activities, keep an eye on the pool, and running f swim tests. At night the gates to parking lot are locked, and the entire perimeter is fenced right down to the water, so pretty safe, despite its harbor location. The buddy system is utilized for kids at all times. A red trolley offers free rides to the aquarium, the USS IOWA, and several museums nearby. A quick walk to the aquarium is neat to break up the day, and a slightly longer walk takes you down to the tide pools just outside the breakwater. Afternoon sundowner breezes make kite flying a genuine option. Overall, we had a great time camping here. No open flames means charcoal and propane cooking is OK, and the mess hall offers a meal plan if you'd rather not endure the hassle of bringing your own stuff. This is not oceanfront cabanas and towel service, kids... but for the price and the experience, this is a nice little camp nestled in the midst of an active marina. A gem indeed.

I got to enjoy beautiful views of the Pacific from their Garden Terrace and Ballroom. The Ballroom has windows that overlook the golf course and makes for a great sight of the sunset at night. It's also quite a spacious ballroom, making it perfect for large events and parties. Aside from enjoying the view, I got to enjoy a wonderful dinner here tonight. Dinner was kicked off with appetizers such as Fried Artichoke, Chicken Tostada and Coconut Shrimp. The main dinner course consisted of tender Short Rib with Roasted Potatoes and Peas. Dessert was a mini Apple Pie topped with vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel. I enjoyed visiting Palos Verdes Golf Club very much. One thing I would note though was when I was leaving, it was quite dark. The neighborhood around doesn't have much light in the evening. I wasn't quite a fan of the dark area and I do wish there were more lights around. Other than though, this spot is a beautiful spot to visit.

Made it up the smaller wall and we signed up for Flips & Tricks classes. The staff is THE BEST. My son has difficulty making/keeping friends and "doesn't like to talk to grownups", but he loves the staff here. As a middle-aged mom, I would call the coaches themselves "kods" because they are at least half my age, but they are AMAZING with my son. He "got hurt" his first class and yelled/cried, but the coaches let him have his feelings, got him ice, and taught him how to avoid that situation in the future. After only 2 official classes and 2 longer events, my son has more confidence and says that he "loves the coaches". Hopefully he will make some friends his own age soon too because they have the same love of literally jumping off walls. Photo from the Halloween event which was epic because I saw a ninja turtle and a pickle climbing the wall when I dropped my Little Dude off.

Michael took him under his wing at 6.5 years of age, recognizing his extreme passion and dedication in wanting to learn how to fence. My son adores Michael, and looks forward to going to fencing 4 days per week. In fact, he wishes that the club were open every day for fencing! Michael's dedication and coaching are evident as my son qualified for the Y10 Men's Sabre Summer Nationals this year, winning his first Direct Elimination at his first national tournament. Additionally, he has won 3 medals in the last 10 months of competing. Michael is a no nonsense coach, which is perfect if you want your child to learn how to fence well, and how to fence properly. As a former Olympian he looks to the future, instead of creating bad habits to help your child win now. Longevity in the sport is important to him, especially with his youth program where youth burnout and repetitive stress injuries can occur. No matter if your child wants to recreationally fence or excel in the sport, Michael D'Asaro and Lancelot Dyke (Assistant Sabre Coach) will help your children develop better athleticism, proprioception, balance, and sportsmanship! Both coaches are very supportive, encouraging growth and expanding potential in each individual fencer. The club is large with numerous strips, and all of the fencers are kind and respectful. I never hesitate to leave my child there while running errands, as I know he will be in great hands. Both coaches (Michael and Lance) are very communicative with their respective kids' parents, and very helpful with navigating the way for welcoming newcomers!
