Refreshing ice cream on a hot summer day at San Clemente beach. Beach Ice Cream is steps away from the sand. You can grab a table and enjoy your Ice Cream there or take it back to the sand. Service was good prices were decent.

What happened to rolling the ice cream in sprinkles?

We ordered 2 soft-serve vanilla ice creams with rainbow sprinkles in a waffle cone -- a simple, nostalgic summer treat. What we got was inedible. The soft-serve had a bizarre texture/color and an off flavor so unpleasant, we actually threw it away right after getting it. As for the sprinkles... The woman behind the counter dug out a sad-looking box from a cupboard (which honestly looked rancid), used a tiny spoon to awkwardly sprinkle about 10 lonely rainbow sprinkles on top. I'm not exaggerating. I asked for the ice cream in a dish for my youngest instead, and she said this is all we have: which looked like a soda cup from the pizza place next door. Not even an actual ice cream dish. The whole operation feels slapped together and totally unsanitary. Between the awful product, questionable supplies, and total lack of care, I honestly don't know how this place is still open. Avoid at all costs.

First time in San Clemente, stopped in at BIC&Y for a malt. Service was excellent. They have Blue Bunny ice cream. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they have huckleberry ice cream. Would come back.

Handel's is one of my go to establishments on the other side of the freeway. The customer service is always exceptional, the ice cream flavors are a treat, and I find pleasure in the rocky road, or new flavors that always appearing. So, if you find yourself near Camino De Los Mares, on the other side of the freeway, away from the beach and doing errands, come grab something to cool off. If you are lucky you can snag a table and indulge or consume in your car.

This is exactly why America has a diabetes and obesity epidemic. Get your portions right. But then you taste the dismal quality of the ice cream and you can see why the are selling quantity over quality. They load up on the sizes because it's inferior to any gelato shop. I've tried both the pistachio and peanut butter flavors. In both cases, the nuts were soggy and chewy like clay or rubber. The ice cream is overly sweet and does not have a creamy texture. I've given this place two visits and I won't be back, unless a normal small sized ice cream is added to the menu. The only positive about Handel's is that they seem to be open late.

A cute little spot in San Clemente, this place embodies everything I imagine in a beach city gem…read more The Nachos are hefty in both portions and flavor. Everything worked well together, and omg that Cheese pull. What this place IS, IS because of the details. The setup, the décor, the AMAZING workers and how cheery and helpful they were... the cucumber/lemon water, the samples of yogurt while you wait, and the hot sauce options, all make for an enjoyable experience. Good food can be found anywhere, but when you pair that with an atmosphere that is both soothing, welcoming, and charming... you've got a home run. Oh speaking of details? WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE MUSIC? I don't know if it's like this everyday but the oldies playing ties everything together. Summers here have got to be magical that hit on beach city nostalgia. They've got alcohol. What? So you know we had to try what they had on draft. This Active Culture location is pretty popular too, because as I write this. It's healthy and quick which also makes it a good option to take out and eat at the beach directly. I'm so happy they finally added chicken as a protein option you can add on, but the star of the show had to go to the nachos and the orange creamsicle smoothie!! I'm not kidding when I say this, I'd take this smoothie over the erewhon's orange kinsicle smoothie.

One of Rita's signature menu items is the Gelati, which is frozen custard on top of Italian Ice. Since it was my first visit, I asked for a recommendation and the employee working that day was incredibly friendly and suggested I try the mango Italian ice with vanilla custard. At first, I enjoyed each layer on its own. The mango Italian ice was refreshing and perfect for a warm day, while the vanilla custard was rich and creamy. What impressed me about the Italian ice was that the mango flavor was well integrated into the ice, it didn't taste like ice with a bunch of overly sugary syrup thrown in. After a few bites, I mixed everything together and that combination was just as enjoyable. The location is also great. It's right on Golden Lantern and just a short walk from Dana Point Harbor, making it an easy stop before or after a stroll around the Wharf or waterfront area. On a sunny day, it's pretty much the ideal beach treat. Can't wait to return and try more flavors!

I tried watermelon and the Mermaid flavor (tastes like cotton candy and something that tastes like the color pink). My husband got the recommended 5 layer with cotton candy and cherry. It was all so good especially with the custard. The custard itself is like a soft serve on steroids. I don't like things that are too sweet but this was all just right. You can get the ice by itself or together with the custard. I would recommend trying the ice flavors you would want then getting it with custard, it really elevates the ice. The person helping us was so friendly! Not a lot of shade or tables to enjoy this but luckily this was during the evening on a cool night. I imagine it wouldn't be easy to enjoy this on a hot day. Otherwise, would come back to this location!
