The catalytic converter was stolen from my 2007 Prius. I replaced it with a factory part from Toyota and added a catalytic converter shield to keep it from being stolen again. The theft happened at the same time as I needed new registration and smog check. I went to two other smog check places before going to Beach Smog and Carlos. Both the other places said I had to take off the new shield I just bought so that they could see the number on the catalytic converter. Not the case as it is a factory part - only Carlos was able to figure out this nuance and actually took the time to show me the process on the CA smog check portal. Good price and great technician... and I did not have an appointment. In n out in about 30 mins. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place for your smog check needs. I will be taking all my vehicles here when they need smog checks for registration. read more

I called to see if I could go in for a smog check. The person I spoke with was Carlos and he was exceptionally friendly, helpful and honest. In terms of friendliness, he was polite and told me to come on in soon and there would be little to no wait. As far as being helpful is concerned, my registration check was apparently lost or stolen in the mail. Carlos showed me a digital record of the smog check I received last month (at a different business). It would have been all too easy for someone to tell me there is no record of the smog check to make a quick buck, but Carlos was honest and showed me the record of my recent, passes smog check. Fortunately I was able to go on the DMV's website and rectify the matter. Carlos even helped direct me to their website and call center phone number. Finally, I plan to return to get a smog check the next time I need one. read more

I went to a DIFFERENT smog location last month and the girl behind the counter was rude and didn't seem to care how long we had been waiting. I asked when I gave my car to the technician if I could walk across the street to get a coffee, he said "no problem". I walked across the street, got coffee and came back immediately. I was back five minutes after my car had finished and the girl behind the counter gave me so much attitude about leaving my car there "for quite some time" as she referred to it. So needless to say I wanted to find a new place. The guy at Beach smog was wonderful! He was super nice and when I asked I walked across the street with my toddler to get coffee and groceries at Trader Joe's! He said he didn't mind at all and to take my time. Great service. I was able to get in almost immediately when I called ahead two different times for different t cars. I had an issue with one of my classic cars and it was nice that it was diagnosed before putting it on the scope and actually letting it fail. If you have a newer car you know will pass the smog, they're fine. I have an older car that didn't calibrate for the new smog rules. This started an 8 month odyssey in which I also had to consult "ask the ref," the state agency that can push through an approval. (Nothing was actually wrong with my car, though along the way I did have the 02 sensor replaced. I was told by Beach Smog that I could bring it back until it passed. When I came back again the other day, I was told: "how do we know what you've been doing for 8 months." And generally talked down to. I did lose my cool a bit while explaining the odyssey of these months and reminding the employee of the promise that had been made. He refused to let me speak to the owner and told me to return tomorrow. (I did try calling to apologize for getting upset but only got answering machine. By upset, I mean saying that I felt like crying and sharply asking to speak to the owner. I didn't get the promise in writing and 20 days was written on the slip so lots of being condescended to later, I was offered a 20% discount to run it through again. Instead, I took my car to Bob Lee in Torrance. They were nice and professional. And my car finally passed. Had it not passed at Beach Smog, I would have descended into that same Catch 22. I'm glad that other people had great experiences. I did not. read more

My registration is due in a few weeks and I needed to get my smog cert done yesterday. I normally go to a place over in Playa del Rey, but had a hair appt in Redondo and wanted to go somewhere close to the salon. Beach Smog was right on the way! I called around 2:20 and the man who answered said they normally close at 2:30 on Saturdays, but he would wait for me (about 20 minutes from where I lived). Drove right in, smog done in around 10 minutes (I walked across the street to Starbucks and got a latte in the mean time) and was out of there for $50 flat. Doesn't get any better than that It's small and hidden between the car wash and surfboard shop, and it's hard to pull in and park if you have to wait your turn.. it's also hard to back out of that driveway. The guy running the place wreaked of alcohol on his breath, and claimed his smog machine wasn't working for older vehicles (this is the third or 4th so place to claim this today). I asked for a recommendation and he told me to go to Hermosa Automotive. I called there with the guy standing next to me and the person who answered said "those guys are liars. They don't want to take your car because the money is not in it so they lie and say their machine doesn't work so that you'll come to me. Of course their machine works!" I told the guy what they had told me, at the place he recommended to me no less, and with glossy eyes and slurring, he says "I am going to call them right now" and walks away and picks up the phone. Definitely despicable business practice... and why lie?! read more
