Thin walls: - you can hear street noise and people talking on the sidewalk - if you have neighbors, you can hear them getting it ON (good for them!), but thankfully not any conversation Lobby closes at 11pm. When I booked via a third-party platform (to save money), that platform told me the lobby closes at 10pm. Shout out to Mario and Diana for helping me during my stay.

It is just a quick 10-15 minute drive to the Queen Mary Waterfront where the festival was held. The outside of this hotel looks a bit sketchy to be quite frank. It is a motel-style hotel, with outside-facing doors and only two floors. Don't let this scare you though. The interior was actually very nice and left me impressed. When we went to check in, we noticed a good amount of parking spots available at the front. There was also a cute little seating area surrounded by bamboo. The lobby was super clean and bright. There is a lot of seating available and a nice view of the pool. The pool is quite large and has some lounge area around it too. The workers at the front desk were super friendly. Check-in was a breeze and very quick. We retrieved our parking slip and left it in the car for overnight parking. We walked up the stairs and were very surprised when we got to our room. The room was huge. There was a ton of walking space around the bed which was fantastic. I was also not expecting there to be a balcony so that was a fun touch. There wasn't any furniture on the balcony but it was nice to stand on and get some fresh air. The decor and bedding was super cute. I'm glad there was a little mini fridge available too. The bathroom was also very spacious with a large shower. I liked the little stool in there and the attention to detail they paid with folding the towels and tissues. The AC blasted super cold which was great for the SoCal heat. Some of the amenities were dated like the AC unit itself and the TV, but is super understandable considering the type of hotel it is. The next morning, we called and were granted a courtesy late check-out! However, at 11:00am sharp, housekeeping knocked on the door to clean. We had to let them know that we had a late check-out. It was not a big deal but just a little annoying because we were expecting to sleep in a little longer. Overall, this was a very satisfying stay. The first impression was a little rough but it ended up being a great stay that exceeded my expectations.

Great sized pool and spa. They keep it heated during the summer months, so it stays around 80-82 degrees. You can jump right in. There's also a spa with jets. That weekend, they had a ping pong table, so it was super fun challenging other guests to games. The landscaping is beautiful: palms, olive tree, roses, and a young plumeria that had a perfect smelling bloom. The #2 best part is the food. They know how to feed their guests! Saturday morning breakfast was eggs, boiled peanuts, and potatoes. We had late lunch/early dinner: Chicken, pulled pork (at just the right temperature), chow mein, and tons of fresh fruit. Dessert was cookies, and one of the guests brought cheesecakes from 85 degrees, so that was awesome. We basically hung out by the pool all day. It was a super fun stay and we can't wait to go back. The owners do a great job of making you feel welcome and at home. If you get lucky, the guy will show you his wine cellar and game room (if you're into games). Definitely recommended for couples who want a pool vacation. Not much privacy by the pool, but if your fellow guests are as cool as the ones we were with, it will feel like a pool party with friends.

We had heard concert parking was horrible and decided to make it easier. We booked the room over a month in advance and there was no warning given about on-site Queen Mary parking. A day or two before our trip, we received an email saying that there would be no on-site parking for hotel guests and we'd have to be shuttled to and fro an off-site location a little over a mile away. This was pretty irritating since the entire point of booking this and spending money on a hotel room was to make parking easier. We wrote back and expressed our discontent only to be met with a "sorry but it is what it is"...just more professionally worded. We got there to park and were able to get on a shuttle. Check in was fairly smooth although we were informed we could not control the AC and so if we needed a fan to call.As soon as we got there I called for a fan because it was 90 degrees and I knew I'd need one--the fan came quickly, but I don't like that you have zero AC control...that is a hotel room perk. The room itself was larger than you'd expect from a boat, and it didn't feel dirty, but it is is desperate need of upgrades. The walls were scuffed, the tile grout brown, toilets and sinks very outdated, etc. The bed itself was very firm, but sleepable and the pillows were fine. However, the walls, or maybe the door area was paper thin and we were woken up the next morning several times starting at 6:45AM with other guests who were so loud that it felt like they were in the bed next to us...and not in a sexy way. About 90 mins before the concert, we went to the Observation Bar for drinks and food. We were seated with the manager saying their "world class service would be with us shortly"...The service was horrendous and he and I are certainly not living in the same world if what we got is world class. She took forever and never checked on us. The drink options were limited, but when we finally got them, they were OK. I also ordered the baked brie that came out cold and the sliders were only OK. We never got to have another round of drinks because it took over an hour to get the first round of drinks and 2 food items. We finally had to get up and ask for the check so as not to be late to the concert and when they asked how everything was and we told them the truth, the manager essentially just looked at us and walked away. Super helpful! I saw many other servers scurrying around and looking helpful, so I think our waitress was just terrible...and living in her own little world...probably the same one the manager is living in. Later after we had left to the concert, my husband left the concert line to run back to the hotel and put stuff in the room that we bought and his key didn't work. So we had to wait for them to fix that which made him late getting back and we missed part of the early entry we had paid extra for. We called for a late checkout the next morning because we had the Royal Brunch booked for 11am (which is check out time) and we had all of our stuff, plus our concert stuff that we had planned on running out to the car, but couldn't do because they wouldn't let us park there. We were told they had no late checkouts left and to check it with the bell service. We went down at about 10:45 to drop off our stuff with the bell service and the line was ridiculously long and not moving whatsoever. There is no way we weren't going to miss our reservation if we waited in it, so we went to the brunch with all of our bags and asked if they could give us a table where we could lay out our posters, etc. A manager of some kind, Andy, overheard this and offered to lock up our items in a closet right there--he was truly one of the only helpful people in the Queen Mary. The brunch itself was delightful. The food and service were excellent and while I would never stay over at the Queen Mary again, I would certainly attend the brunch again if we could park onsite. Finally we went out to the front to get back on the shuttle in the blazing sun and the line was in the direct sunlight and there was no shuttle in site. I asked people who had been there how long they had been waiting and they said over 20 minutes. I'm sorry, that's unacceptable. You didn't give appropriate notice that we couldn't park onsite, the line is in the sun, and now people have to wait over 20 minutes in 90 degree heat to get back to our cars? I asked the person working the little podium where the shuttle was and he said they were coming every 15 minutes. I told him that was clearly untrue and he radioed them and one showed up about 6 minutes later. I would never stay here again. Too many things went wrong to waste the money. Stay somewhere else, and just eat at the royal brunch. Also, we were offered nothing but "free parking"...

All of the rooms are on the second and third floor, as the hotel, except for the reception area, is built over the parking lot. It's kind of a combined indoor outdoor place, because the center is open air and then you walk into hallways. The pool and hot tub are on the second floor and the breakfast room is on the third floor. One of the best things about this place was the location, just around the corner from Main Street Seal Beach where we tend to spend a lot of time. Oh, and the chocolate chip cookies they put out in the evening is a great touch. The entire hotel is blue and white themed, which seems pretty common for Beach area hotel/motels. I really liked that there was a very long desk/counter along one wall, which we never get when we stay and our normal Hiltons. There was so much room for everything. We had an Arcadia door with a balcony that had two chairs and a table. The weather was perfect for sitting out. The fridge in the room was really cold. The beds were super comfortable. With breakfast is basic but fine. Each morning they had a hot egg dish, a potato dish, and a meat dish. It was also the waffle maker with batter, muffins, bread, bagels, cold cereal with milk, boiled eggs, and yogurt. One morning they had a full of perfectly ripe avocados for your toast. Of course there's juice and coffee. One nice touch is that they had plastic to-go containers so you can take food up to your room. You had a very enjoyable stay here, and when we want to stay in Seal Beach again we will come back here. It has received the TripAdvisor Travelers Choice Award winner and is a Yelp favorite.

I notified CalJump of this cancellation more than 72 hours in advance and they still have yet to process my refund despite written confirmation that they had. I have tried contacting their business numerous times via call and text and have either been ignored or told that the manager would check on it. If you do purchase their services, be sure to pay with credit in the case you need to cancel your event. They will reverse the charges for you if CalJump does not honor their refund policy.

There was dust and grime buildup on all of the ledges, stains, crumbs, hair, dust, along the bed frame and in the crevices of the chair. just no attention to detail at all. we did contact the owner and opted to leave and were provided a full refund, but the kind of build up that was in that room was either from a long term stay that wasn't cleaned up properly or just terrible cleaning over and over. side note: wifi signal was not good, bedding was bare minimum and no hand towels or face cloths provided. I'm not looking to trash the owners, I just don't want anyone to be in the same situation we were, having to look for another place last minute after a long day of traveling, I was almost in tears, plus I had to pay way more to stay somewhere else because there weren't a lot of options.

I've been to Long Beach a few times this past year for conferences and events and usually am…read morestaying at the big box hotels that are immediately adjacent to the Convention Center (like the Hyatt Regency, The Renaissance, The Westin) but I was late to the game to reserve a room this time and missed getting the discounted conference block rate. So rather than pay an astronomical fee for the privilege of proximity, I did a quick search of the area. There are plenty of options, but many of them just seemed suspect. The I came across the Varden. Definitely a boutique hotel, but definitely worth checking out. The rooms are typically small with barely room for a bed, a partial desk and a small bathroom area. But the room was extremely clean, the fixtures and bed were new and cool and for one person, really perfect. Particularly since other than sleeping and checking emails, what else do you really need? Well, for starters you need to feel safe. And this place does a great job of securing the facility at night, but you don't feel you're in a bad neighborhood anyway. You also might like to enjoy a welcoming attitude, and the staff and place has plenty of that. The young staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Being forewarned that the property has 3 levels and no elevator is important, but honestly, it's not a tough climb to floor 3. And as a testament at how great the staff are, they wouldn't take no, and they carried my bags to my 3rd floor room. Since I was there for meetings, I needed to press my clothes, so a call to the front desk resulted in a brand new Iron and Board appearing at my room within minutes. And being welcomed by a reception with snacks, wine and drinks between 5:00 - 7:00 everyday, is just super nice. They also do a continental breakfast from 6:00-9:00 daily. They have a hip space right behind the registration area for these treats so it's easy to walk through on your way in/out of the property. And best of all the price per night was less than 1/2 of what those big chain hotels were charging. And I was less than 4 blocks (and a very nice walk past lots of local stores/restaurants to give me a feel for the area) from the Convention Center. For all these reasons, if you're in Long Beach solo, I would highly recommend you check out the Varden.

They have a restaurant that we weren't able to try as we got in late and left before they opened. Be aware they have no dedicated parking. You'll need to find a place on the street and they sweep 3rd on Wednesday mornings so if you park there you'll need to move your vehicle by 9AM. This place deserves all of five stars even with its small deficiencies. We will stay here next time we're in the LBC!

The bathroom floor flooded from the shower head that was a challenge to reach despite efforts to close the curtain. If you're not very tall, be ready to sacrifice a towel.

It is in a great location as it is right across the bay from all of the dining and entertainment of downtown Long Beach; including Shoreline Village and the Aquarium of the Pacific. It is also close to the Queen Mary and the Convention Center. The rooms are great and many have really great harbor views with balconies and the amenities are really good. They have on site restaurants, swimming and jacuzzi and meeting space and are only a short shuttle or water taxi ride to everything. The atmosphere was very relaxing even though you are close to downtown LB, it was not overly noisy. Highly recommended if you just want to get away from LA or are coming in from out of town.

Our room had black mold all over the shower and you can tell by the photos, management is aware the black mold exists and has tried to cover it up with paint. Creating a serious health and safety concern. When we reported the issue to business manager Robert Farzam, he responded with a shocking lack of professionalism and concern. Rather than addressing the problem, he claimed that black mold is "common" and suggested that we should not expect better because this is not a five-star hotel along with stating that because the property is not part of a hotel chain, that he can not AFFORD to refund us for our one night stay. Most concerning, my six month old baby was exposed to these conditions. Despite being informed of the health risks, and provided evidence of the black mold, management showed no urgency, accountability, or concern for guest safety whatsoever. Robert made it evidently clear he does not care about the conditions of this hotel, rather only the money he receives from guest stays. This property disregarded basic health and safety regulations. The response from Robert Farzam demonstrated a troubling level of negligence toward the wellbeing of any hotel guests. I was genuinely shocked by the lack of professionalism and customer service displayed throughout this entire situation. Do not stay here!
