Since February, I've been trying to get both my lens and contacts prescriptions correctly ordered with this office. The initial contacts during a trial worked well, but they ordered a different prescription instead even though I requested the trial version during my check-in appointment.When I finally used these new contacts, I immediately noticed that the left eye was blurry and did not match the previous trial pair I was using. When I called for them to be fixed in May, the staff talked to said she'd increase the prescription instead to see if that would work even though I asked to go back to the trial one had no issuel. When I went in today on 6/13, the prescription given to me was the one she decided on as she did not listen when I asked her to go back to the trial. They also claimed I needed to repay for a new set even though they initially messed up on my prescription. I had to ask the first staff I talked due during this trip three different times on why they were doing this before they stopped insisting that I repay for a new year set. When I went to put on this new set, I realized they had not actually listened to my request to go back to the trial pair that worked, but instead gave me the one the staff over the phone had decided on. I spent almost 7 minutes trying to find the first staff member again as she had left right away when I was trying on this pair. When she came back, she told me the pair I had were the trial set. When I looked a the prescription, I realized they were the same as the ones that were ordered incorrectly. They then argued that the pair they gave me were the ones I asked for. I asked for my prescription and paperwork information so that I can get another doctor's opinion, and she refused. I asked again and she continued to refuse. After nearly 30 minutes of asking with the original staff bringing in another staff member to talk with me instead, I was finally told they'd only give me my paperwork if I scheduled a new appointment. I then told them that it was illegal to withhold patient documents like this. They came back after another 5 minutes, then pretended that they never withheld my information or told me I had to schedule with them. They then told me I had to sign a waiver before they would give me my documents, all the while denying that they tried to withhold them beforehand. The staff that told me to rescheduled left during this time, leaving me with the original staff member. They tried to have me sign a waiver without explaining why for another 5 minutes before finally waiving and giving me my patient information. Altogether, it has taken almost 4 months to properly correct my prescription with them, and almost an hour in their office needing to ask multiple times for my prescription and paperwork documents. Throughout the entire time they denied me my information, denied that they denied it, and did not help me correct my prescription. Their only excuse? "This has never happened here." read more

I agree with Keen S's review that the non-eye Dr's need some customer service training big time. You also might need to have a lot of extra time to dedicate to any transaction here. The Dr's are very knowledgeable and nice but everything else seems to be lacking! Not sure they want to deal with vsp customers, not sure if I can blame them either. UPDATED to 4 Stars! Thanks to the owner for personal comments. Since my post I have noticed a lot of positive changes in the staff and general customer service. The eye doctors have always been great and now the staff seems to have done a complete shift in the right direction. If I could give a zero I would!! This Dr Germundsen comes off as such a nice guy! But if you don't spend money here, he will figure out a way to get it! BEWARE!! I went in just to get a script! That's all.. I order my contacts on line and get them much cheaper then he could sell to me for. So, he says,"oh you have such bad scratches on your eyes.. I need to monitor them". "Oh and no worries because your insurance will cover it" Are you kidding me? 6 months later I am being billed for over $145! Don't go here if you don't plan on spending money!! I was looking for someone to be the go to guy for eye help.. Instead I am being robbed and swindled.. I guess he needs a new boat or something! I tried talking to his office.. I never wanted to do this but if I didn't he would not give me my script.? Too bad. I back to the drawing board. Maybe I should just stick to LensCrafters. After the debacle with Lenscrafters in Torrance I just wanted to go to a competent Optometrist to get a pair of glasses ASAP. Fortunately for me, I chose a great place to go to that I will be able to stick with for years to come. I made an appointment at Beachside very easily and conveniently during the week and during my lunch hour. Everything is first rate, from the polite service I received from desk staff to finding and ordering a pair of glasses. Most importantly, Dr. Germundsen provided, far and away, the best eye exam I've ever had. He has top-of-the-line equipment and he explains everything very thoroughly. Without asking me anything about my vision at all, he conducted the examination and told me with 100% accuracy how I use my glasses, how I feel when I don't use them, and how I should be using them. The explanation/diagnosis was so accurate that you would've thought that I had been a lifelong patient at Beachside and not a first-time patient. My insurance covered most of the services, including the frames and lenses. They have a very wide selection of frames, so you can probably find what you're looking for there and if not they will find them and order them for you. If you want great service, convenience (they have Saturday hours) and a great eye exam go to Beachside, you'll definitely be happy. read more

My family and I were greeted immediately upon arrival, which is a plus for me. First visit so needed to complete paperwork, but after that was done, we did not wait long to be called into the back office for initial testing. Short wait is always wonderful. I understand that optomap testing is always an additional fee that insurance does not cover. However, the female technician presented it to me in a way that it was not optional. She simply handed a clipboard to me, stated it was not covered by insurance, and asked me to initial the document. I felt like I was required to the Optomap testing, just seemed strange because it was first time it happened this way. Dr. Germundsen was excellent! He took his time to explain what was going on with my son's eye condition. I did not feel rushed at all and he answered all my questions. He was also very friendly and personable with my son. His knowledge and professionalism is outstanding. Now, the female optician that took over to help us select frames is a different story. I think she needs some lessons in customer service from Dr. Germundsen. I just didn't feel the same enthusiasm and attentiveness from her. At the end of my transaction (payment), I had to ask her if were all set and done. Really? Come on lady, don't you see me sitting in front of you? Just staring at you? Maybe she was having a bad day. Oh well... But Dr Germundsen is great so I've decided to return only because of him. read more

The last time I came to Beachside Optometry was four years ago; I don't have vision insurance, my prescription didn't seem to change much between visits, and two years ago I had a baby, so vision tests kind of fell to the wayside. Anyway, at this previous appointment four years ago I'd already discovered that I could ask for my prescription after my appointment so that I could order glasses online and save money as well as getting the exact style I was interested in versus only the brands the store carried. WELL, when I asked for my prescription (again, this was four years ago) the receptionist, who clearly knew why I wanted it, was rude and informed me that they don't recommend purchasing glasses anywhere else to ensure quality control. She then dashed off minimal prescription information and begrudgingly handed it over. The message was loud and clear: don't come here if you're not going to shop here! Coupled with my other reasons listed above, I avoided returning for a few years and just ordered and re-ordered new glasses online with the messy handwritten prescription from the irritated receptionist. Flash forward to this week! Before I made an appointment, I meekly called ahead to find out whether I could get information I needed to order glasses online, whether I for sure could collect my prescription, and to feel out whether I might still get "attitude" about that kind of thing. I am happy to report that the new receptionist was cheerful, polite, informative, and reassuring. On top of that, at every appointment I have ever made at Beachside, both years ago and right now, I have NEVER had an opthamologist that I didn't find approachable, knowledgeable, and pleasant. Even the optometrist who measured my pupillary distance for glasses it was very obvious I would not be ordering from her was polite; my new prescription was neatly printed out, clear, and legible. I can't recommend this place highly enough and once my baby is about three years old I am going to bring her to Beachside for her first eye test as well. read more

I love Beachside Optometry and have been coming to them for about 5 years. I've gotten both my glasses and contacts from them and have sent them many referrals who were happy as well. I've had a few eye issues in the last 2-3 years where my contacts end up cutting my eye, and they always make it a point to squeeze me in to address my eye issue ASAP. This last time I ended up with an ulcer really close to my eye, and Dr. Germundsen had the ladies at the front desk give me his cell phone number & told me to call him anytime over the weekend if I had any issues. The only complaints I have are scheduling & when they're trying to sell you contacts. I was scheduled for a contact exam follow up 2 weeks after my contact exam. I asked if I could be scheduled 3 weeks out rather than 2, but they were adamant I come back 2 weeks later. I had to change around my schedule, and a day or two before the follow up exam, they called me to push the follow up exam back a week. This is what I was originally asking to do. I ended up having to switch around my schedule again. Another issue is when I went back for my follow up exam, I let them know I was going to be buying my contacts through Costco since it was cheaper. They told me they would be able to price match Costco. I told them the contacts prescribed to me would be $35/box compared to their $55/box. They then asked me if I was sure I wanted to go through Costco when ordering contacts because Costco supposedly has a tricky policy when you're trying to buy contacts and filing a claim with your insurance. She told me Costco worked like an "out of network" type of deal, and it would be a big hassle for me to get contacts through them. We kind of went back and forth for a minute or two. Luckily, I did all my research and just asked them for my prescription and took it to Costco. Costco was able to make a claim with my insurance with no problems. I didn't have to file anything with my insurance myself. The employee at Costco stated they have ALWAYS accepted my insurance, and no one has ever had to file anything on their own with their insurance. They did mention the only problem they sometimes ran across is the doctor's office would "lock" the amount insurance pays towards contacts, so they would have to contact the insurance carrier to file a claim. I understand the doctor's office make a portion of their money on the sales of contacts, but why lie to me? Even if it was an honest mistake, at least get facts straight before trying to argue with a patient. I never checked the facts on ordering contacts through Costco before. I kind of just took their word for it. For some reason, I checked this time. read more

The saga continues... Dr. Germundsen's resolution and attempt to get my business back consisted of responding to my yelp review by telling me that the recollection of my experience was wrong. Goes to show their professionalism. Although it was politely worded (as is their modus operandi), it was belittling, condescending, and on the verge of a HIPAA violation. Further, no one from his staff has called either me or my husband to offer us this so called "sunglasses deal," or to apologize for that matter. But even if they did, we would not come back. This place is awesome! My husband has Keratoconus so not all eye doctors can fit/exam his eyes. The doctor was overly enthusiastic and genuinely happy to be able to help my husband get better contact lens. They have new technology to treat Keratoconus which is so great. My husband's contacts are considered medically necessary because of the eye disease he has but he did not find that out until coming here. Another woman doctor off 2nd Street in Long Beach was charging my husband full price when his contacts should have been 100% covered.
