How this shop has made it this long with terrible hours, an odd owner, and a very, very messy shop I personally do not understand. With a store like this I can respect there is a certain amount of quirkiness, but quirky is not this shop. Upon entering I was greeted by a very friendly staff member who was very polite and showed me where I could set my take out box from a nearby restaurant. (Note to anyone who has a "leftover" sandwich in a box... leave it outside... trust me.) The owner then came from the back and proceeded to question the employee about shop business at full volume as if they were the only two people in the store. Their discourse became very uncomfortable and negative very quickly. When I asked to see a bowl of pink tourmaline which was behind the front counter the employee, to my surprise, had to ask the other woman if it was okay to show them to me. What? Seriously? You have items for sale on the shop floor and you have to decide to show them to a customer? At this point I should have just left, but me being me I didn't want to be as rude as the shopkeeper. She then proceeded to say she hadn't priced them yet and started to pull prices out of thin air. I selected two stones quickly just to end the very uncomfortable encounter. I was instructed to place them on a plate and hand them to her... and then the situation became even more bizarre. I turned to grab my food container and was scolded to leave it where it was. She made up some ignorant excuse that there wasn't anywhere to put it down by the register area. I am an adult with two functioning hands and can hold a box with one hand and use my credit card with the other. I can understand if the food had smelled, but it was a plain turkey sandwich... no perceptible odor that anyone could have possibly smelled over the overwhelming odor of incense in the shop. At this point I was just done. Purchased my two tourmaline specimens and left. Trust when I say you do not need to buy any incense... you will smell like the shop for the next three hours after your encounter. This was my third time in Beads N Botanicals and my last. INTROVERT ALERT: this shop will leave you feeling sad, confused, and drained. In my humble opinion this shop should be avoided most vehemently. -Clean and clear your shop. Seriously, it's not that big. The negative energy is like a cesspool. -Respect your customers unless you really don't want their money. -Talk shop business when you don't have customers or at least keep it professional. -Price all of your merchandise. -If you don't want food or drink brought in the shop stop being passive aggressive and... PUT UP A SIGN! You have little nit-noid signs everywhere else in the shop. The "no touchy" sign was exceptionally lovely. read more

So last night my mother sister and myself all went to this store to look for specific crystals, we did find them and for a pretty decent price, BUT the whole experience wasnt very calming or comfortable because the woman working was constantly right next to us as if she thought wed steal something. I've been to this shop a few times with my mother. Last night we went in, my mother, sister, and I, and we were very pleased with our finds. They have beautiful stones and many books, jewelry, candles, etc. Although, the overall experience wasn't too great. The woman kept hovering over us and practically watched our every move from right over my shoulder. It made me uncomfortable and not be able to take in the experience, but I would recommend it for stones, or books, or tarot cards, or something along those lines read more

I stopped by today during a time the store should have been open, and the woman there told me (through the locked door) that they were closed because the "courthouse" was closing. I'm thinking she should have said she was sick; that would have been impossible to verify. Because it was possible to verify that neither the county court building nor city hall closed early today. I've been here for products (lovely stones, excellent incense, nice candles, essential oils) and for Reiki and Reflexology treatments by Marlita. I've always been happy with my purchases - the incense and oils that Catherine makes are top quality. Treatments with Marlita are always special. Don't bother. Drove 2 hrs after checking their website for days and hours of operation. Got here and SURPRISE!! Found a ratty little printed sign on the door stating spring hours were in effect. Mind you, this was October 20, hardly spring time. Closed on Tuesday (website said open on Tuesday), open by appointment. Infuriating!! Two hours wasted. Looked thru the windows , doesn't look like there is much available for the serious beader/jewelry designer anyway. Complete waste of time. read more

Great place for incense, essential oils & blends, candles, incense, soaps - all crafted by the store owner. Really good selection of crystals/stones at different price points. Bead inventory is smaller than a big box store, but more unusual too - has some beads hand crafted by glass blowers who sell directly to the shop. I found a terrific himalayan salt lamp here at a great price on my last visit. The book selection is metaphysical, self-help, Tarot, magickal, etc.- was bigger & more diverse than the selection at our local Barnes & Noble-& you can ask Catherine & the staff about the books, too. Catherine is an incredible font of information about everything in the store- and will be upfront about pluses and minuses. No real upselling in the conversation, either, which I appreciate. The staff has varying levels of depth as far as those sort of discussions, but Catherine is usually there on Saturdays if you really need to get specific information. The prices are fair -& I've found some deals here, too. Lots of different price points, which I like. They have Psychic, Tarot readings, Reiki sessions, different seminars & fairs going on at different times, or you just contact the reader & get an appointment 1:1. The readers are generally very good- have had some useful insights from readings there. The shop's public Facebook page is the best place for news/info/hours/contact info. It's a small, independent woman owned business, which I like to support, as I'm a small business owner, too. If you're driving in, or if time is critical for you: Call ahead or check the Facebook page for current days/hours. Most small businesses/boutique type places don't have consistent big box store hours. Sole proprietors are often a 'one-person band' and emergency things can come up that cause store closures or weird hours. Always- with a small independent business- 'trust but verify.' Again, I'm a small business owner, so I 'get it,' but customers need to understand the realities of small independent business, too. If driving in, the Black Dog Steak & Ale house (mentioned in Esquire magazine) is next door; the Dancing Dog vegan eatery is around the corner, as is Heel to Toe (fantastic shoe store for consultative shoe buying). There's also two food coop-type stores nearby, too (so plenty to do/see). Parking is street parking, but there are city lots around, too. There's a city parking garage a block away- I've never had a problem finding a spot. Am happy that we have Beads and Botanicals (& the other businesses, too) here in Urbana! :-) read more

Great selection, fair prices,strange shop owner. Every time my daughter and I go in there,the shop owner, though friendly, hovers over us and watches our every move. It is emotionally draining, almost like there is an energy vampire in there. We've both experienced intense headaches, fatigue and numbing of the lips and tongue after visiting this shop. We continue to return though as it is the only shop of this type for mile and miles. The shop owner really needs to chill out. After reading some of these reviews, I see we are not the only ones that are made to feel uncomfortable as we shop. We'd probably spend a lot more money in there if we weren't trying to hurry to get what we came for and get out. read more

Beautiful crystals; sweet-smelling, store-made incense. High prices but pretty reasonable for a local shop. I visited on a Saturday and the lady stared at me the entire time I was in the store, even when I was looking through the inexpensive rock chips. Very uncomfortable. I plan to return when she's not working and see if I can have a more comfortable, less on-display visit at another time. read more

i used to buy incense here on a bi-weekly basis, because it is damn good. then i bought expensive massage oil here, and when the bottle fell off a table a foot from the ground, it broke. my husband tried to return it and the owner basically accused him of being a liar - they actually 'tested out' a separate bottle by filling it with water and dropping it on the floor. well congrats, assholes, that bottle is not dysfunctional LIKE THE ONE YOU SOLD TO ME WAS. beads and botanicals sucks and i hope it goes out of business. the end. read more
