We use to love coming to Lexington until an incident a few years ago at one of the local restaurants ran many of us tourists away from the area. Weiththat said we did return this year and had a great time we tried Beameup BBQ for the first time and was glad we did. The Brisket was outstanding, and sides were equally delicious and all homemade. Restaurant was clean. The owners were helpful and polite. They are only open for lunch. Great family run barbecue spot. I had the brisket special with macaroni and cheese and vinegar slaw. All were excellent. The brisket was lean and tender, and it had a nice smoky taste. They obviously cook on wood. It was so tender I could cut it with a plastic fork! My friend had pulled pork, with deviled eggs and banana pudding. The pulled pork was tasty but not greasy and the banana pudding was creamy and good. The sweet tea was exceptional, in that it was not too sweet. I often mix sweet and unsweet tea 50-50, But it was perfect as it is. Unfortunately, they did not sell beer or collard greens. And, I wish they had french fries on the menu. I have to say, it was rather healthy for a barbecue joint. A very nice couple runs the place. It has a crafty ambience, definitely not a barbecue dive. All in all, a solid place and a great stop. Gave up planning to eat there sometime ago. They close and do their catering so you never know when they are open. Saw they are planning to combine their BBQ place with the breakfast/lunch restaurant in town. Hope they plan to have a BBQ on the menu every day and not go off to cater somewhere or else the whole thing will come crashing down. Anything under 5 stars would be an insult to this establishment. Beameup is locally owned and produces some of the best barbecue in the United States. I've been to Nashville, Savannah, Charlotte, and Charleston BBQ joints but they all pale in comparison to Beameup. The restaurant is a short walk from the university and has a charming pig-themed decor that really accentuates the family feel. You can't really go wrong here but I highly recommend "The Chub", the ribs (if they're on special), deviled eggs, potato salad, baked beans, and the banana pudding. "The Chub" is a BBQ burrito which combines a meat of your choice (chicken, pork, brisket)with mac and cheese, honey bacon, and cole slaw. Every time we stop in Lexington, we make it a point to eat here. Amazing owners, staff, vibe, and food all around. This place is a gem, so glad we stumbled upon this place. Had the pulled pork sandwich, macaroni and cheese, blue cheese slaw and baked beans. The server told us all the sides were awesome and she was right! 3 choices of BBQ sauce on every table, I typically don't like Carolina style sauce, but between that and the traditional spicy, I was more than satisfied. We called Scottie last minute with our delivery order for a very hungry bachelor party and Scottie made it happen with a huge order of pulled pork and baby back ribs. All of the food was gone after about an hour and it took every bit of manliness the bachelor party could muster to finish all of it, but we had too because it was amazing. It really screwed up our plans later on for dinner because it was so much food and because it was so good we weren't hungry later on that night, but we were ok with that. Pulled pork was awesome and they have a real carolina style sauce that's perfect with it. The ribs were cooked perfectly and the dry rub was excellent on them alone but paired well with the dark spicy sauce they do. Scottie does a great job and it's worth a stop at Beam Me Up BBQ if you are anywhere near Lexington. I've tried at least 100 BBQ places in VA and Beam Me Up made my top 5 with for both ribs and pulled pork. read more

We had BeamMeUp BBQ cater our May 2013 wedding so this is primarily a catering review, but if you stop by for lunch you won't be disappointed. Scottie IS the pitmaster and owner of BeamMeUp, he runs his business out of a small store along lovely Woods Creek in Lexington, VA. Scottie handled just about everything for our wedding and was so flexible and easy to work with. We wanted a southern garden wedding with slightly fancier food and we got just that. The food was incredible, everything looked beautiful (I don't know how you make pulled pork look gorgeous, but it was), and the reception was perfectly executed. Here's our menu: Appetizers: Cheese display: Goat cheese, blue, brie, cheddar, and gouda, crackers and fruit Pickle display: Artichoke hearts, dill pickles, pickled olives, pickled okra, pickled green beans Dips display: Hummus, salsa, veggie dip, pita, chips, assorted crudite Main: Pulled pork served with assorted BBQ sauces and sandwich rolls Coleslaw (vinegar based) Bourbon mashed sweet potatoes Spinach salad (nuts, strawberries, goat cheese) Grilled spring vegetables Dessert: Pies: Pecan, cherry, strawberry, and apple with real whipped cream - Homemade by Scottie's wife! Beameup generally has good food but totally unreliable business hours. Before making a trip there, you should call first to verify that the restaurant is open. On several occasions I have not done that only to find the business closed during their normal business hours. Perfect to feed our toddler for $1.89 (homemade Mac and cheese) when we go there to grab a quick bite.
