The boba scene in Anchorage looked grim. That is until we came across Bear Bubble Tea, possibly the only 2nd gen-type boba establishment in the city. Arriving for a weekday afternoon treat, we were greeted by a small line of customers. Luckily they are pretty efficient with their drink process so we got ours quickly. Classic Milk Tea, 50% Sweet, Iced ($6.95) - The tea is surprisingly good. It has decent black tea flavor, has a good creaminess level, not gritty but with a good level of richness, and isn't too sweet at 50% sugar. I wasn't expecting such a good milk tea from a place in Anchorage. This drink comes with boba. The boba is also pretty good. It starts too soft, but firms up a bit after mixing the drink. Still, even at full cold, it's still on the softer side, able to be pressed flat without too much force between the tongue and roof of the mouth. It's clearly marinated in a brown sugar soak, giving stickiness and a good sweetness level. The pearls have a good q level, despite being a little soft. To be honest, I prefer boba that's a little softer over boba that's too firm, as long as it's not to the point of being mushy. Milk Tea Rating: 4.5/5 Boba Rating: 4.5/5 Usually we only get a single drink from boba shops that are new to us, but after having the Classic Milk Tea, we decided to go for a second since it was so good. Thai Jasmine Green Milk Tea, 50% Sweet, Iced ($6.95) - I had to ask the bobarista what this was and she unfortunately wasn't able to explain it very well, other than stating that it's not Thai tea mixed with Jasmine tea. We were curious enough that we had to order this. After receiving the drink - woah, this milk tea has a really interesting flavor. It's a little like a minty anise, warm and toasty, kind of reminding me of bubblegum actually, with pandan/vanilla and licorice notes. Really interesting and really quite good! Again, the drink includes boba, which is the same texture as the other drink. Milk Tea Rating: 4.5/5 Boba Rating: 4.5/5 Bear Bubble Tea serves some great drinks, really unexpected quality for the area. They could easily compete in a much larger metro - this is coming from someone who has visited 200+ boba shops over the past 3 years. I guess having "bear" in the name must mean it's good - for some reason, I haven't met a bad "bear" boba place yet! Bathrooms - Single unisex room.

Fast service, kind workers, and I enjoyed my drink! Would definitely go back and try more.

not filling drinks up all the way when asked for no ice, kind of ridiculous

They are not a very welcoming environment, they just stare at you as you walk into the door with a blank expression. This place used to be good when they first opened, but they let it get to their heads and became very greedy. Their new point system is ridiculous, you have to spend so much money to get a free drink and the points EXPIRE. They need to go back to the punch card system if they're already going to be greedy in other aspects. I also saw this on facebook. (see photo attached)

Stopped by for the first time today, very cute aesthetically pleasing shop. Nice music and beautiful graphics and signage for all the drinks and specials. A kind lady took my order and I got the brown sugar bubble milk (no boba tho since I'm picky lol) Everything was delicious and came out pretty fast! The only complaint I have is when I brought my drink out I noticed it was dripping quite a bit from under the seal unfortunately and I tried to clean it up but then it dripped more but it's okay haha... Definitely would go here often if I lived in Anchorage!

Punch cards!

I've been here several times. They no longer do a punch card which kinda sucks cause I was three drinks away from a free one! Now they use cash app rewards and you get 1 star for every $ spent. Each drink is around 6/7/8 $ not including all the cheese foam and jelly/boba that you add. You need over 100 stars to get anything as a reward so it's kinda a waste. I like the punch card better.

Bear Bubble Tea is one of the best bubble tea places in town! With its convenient location on Dimond Blvd and King Street, in a busy area, it is no surprise this place is popping. When you walk in, you are greeted by a modern, clean white interior that feels fresh and inviting. Most of the time, the line starts as soon as you walk in, but don't worry - they have multiple ways to place your order. At the counter, you can order your favorite drink from one of the great staff members. On the right side of the counter is a self-order kiosk, or you can online through their app ahead of time. The parking lot can sometimes be challenging because it is shared with other businesses. Their Mango & Passon Fruit refresher with Strawberry popping pearls is so delicious! *** translation to German for all the world travelers *** Bear Bubble Tea ist einer der besten Bubble Tea Läden in Anchorage! Amazing quality tea and toppings. Customer service is next level. Not sure if the woman at the register was the owner, manager, or an employee but her service was amazing. Extremely patient and professional. Customer ahead of me shoved her phone in the woman's face and someone on FaceTime order. The woman didn't even blink, only smiled and patiently took the customers order. I could never exhibit this saint's patience. Been coming to this shop since it opened and they've grown a lot. Not a ton of seating inside but super cute interior. The business owners clearly care about the experience of customers. The boba is great and the flavors are balanced. I usually order a passion fruit jasmine green tea with lychee jelly or taro latte with brown sugar syrup. Perfect every time.

Finally got to try this recently opened south Anchorage boba spot! It's located in the same strip mall as "Mandala," off Dimond Blvd/King Street. Bear Bubble consistently has lines out the door. Luckily my girls and I were able to sneak in before their early evening rush on a beautiful sunny day. Their interior space is cozy, bright and clean. They offer free lemon water for refreshment. Their menu is easy to read and options are clear. Prices are average. We ordered a brown sugar tea with boba and a mango refresher with mango popping pearls. They also had some Pockys for sale at the register that my toddler cried for. Bear bubble definitely gave what it needed to give. We especially loved their cups. We can't wait to return.

Super nice workers, cute shop. Great tea and really good spam musabi! On my two week trip to Alaska I went at least four or five times before heading back home.

The gateway to happiness! (Pick up your order here.)

I've been driving past this spot for years on my Costco runs and finally decided to stop in, so glad I did! Their menu is way beyond your average boba shop in the U.S. As someone who's Asian and has had authentic boba all over Asia, I can honestly say this place is the real deal. I grabbed a Black Sesame Latte for myself and a Taro Latte for my husband, and wow... we were both obsessed! Their organic brown sugar boba is soft, chewy, and not overloaded with artificial flavors or sweetness. Just perfect. The staff was SUPER friendly and welcoming, and the shop itself has a cute, cozy minimal vibe that makes you want to hang out for a while, but I gotta run my groceries can't wait . If you're in Anchorage and craving bubble tea, this place is a must. Seriously, best boba in town!

Blended Thai tea with boba

Bear bubble tea is currently in their soft opening phase. I have seen posts on social media about lines sometimes being out the door. Lucky for me the few times I've gone haven't been that crazy, but I can tell why this spot is so popular. This cute cafe has a great menu with a variety of tea, coffee & fruit drinks with add ins. They also have a few food items & will eventually be adding bingsu to their menu. The shop is small, but the aesthetic is very nice & modern. Staff is always super friendly & they work diligently to get your drinks out. The order system includes numbers so everything is pretty streamlined. The first time I went I ordered their signature brown sugar bubble milk tea, and a fresh strawberry blueberry smoothie with whip foam. They brew their own tea for the drinks, which I believe they're the only shop in town that does so. The brown sugar boba were fresh, perfectly chewy & plentiful. The only thing I wish there was an option to customize sweetness because I like my bubble tea on the sweeter side. The standard sweetness level is pretty much what you would find for milk tea in the lower 48. I just really love shops that allow you to customize especially since we don't have one here. The smoothie was made with whole fresh or frozen fruit & not a syrup. It was a very good smoothie & my child enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the milk tea, but went back again to try the Thai tea. I love a good blended Thai tea so I went with that & added in boba. The Thai tea flavor was really good I just wish it was stronger. I think they could play either the levels a little more on the flavors especially since the cups are all the same size. Overall this is a great shop for bubble tea. The menu had a good variety, and it's great to see a ship that uses brewed tea vs. powders.

Earl Grey w/ Salted Cheese Foam added Grass Jelly

Pros: * Organic Milk + Organic Alternative options & Oatmilk available * Consistent drink quality * Friendly staff * Cute but small interior Cons: * Newly opened, small staff of 2-3 so there is usually a 10-20min wait * Customizable sugar levels aren't possible * Full Menu isn't available yet and items do run out (technically shop is still in soft opening hours) I've been to Bubble Bear 5x and the drinks have been consistent. My preference for milk tea is a strong tea flavor and lightly sweetened (30% sugar level). Although they don't offer change in sugar level I would say it's comparable to a 50-70% sugar level at milk tea shops in the lower 48. I think they've found a good sweetness level to satisfy most ppl. They do use fresh milk/alternatives and this is probably what sets them apart from other spots in town + their overall boba focused branding. Most of the drinks are ~$7, toppings are $.75 each and alt milk at $.70. Earl Grey w/ Salted Cheese Foam add Grass Jelly 4.5/5: This is my go to hence why it's in every photo. The earl grey flavor is present. The cheese foam doesn't have a super strong cheesy taste if that sounds off putting. Once you mix it all up, it pretty much tastes like an earl grey milk tea with a pinch of salt here and there. The grass jelly was a good texture, not too firm. Jasmine Green Milk Tea (comes w/ boba) 4/5: This one tastes like an iced matcha latte with boba. I couldn't taste the Jasmine flavor therefore the rating reflects that, otherwise it's a 4.5 were it just matcha latte The sweetness level is like a 40-50%. Classic Milk Tea (comes w/boba) 4.5/5: The Assam black tea was quite fragrant. The boba was well cooked, it had that nice chewy bounce. The sweetness was like a 60-70%. I've also tried sips of the Green Tea Lychee, Green Tea Passionfruit with those being slightly sweeter than the milk teas but flavors strong in both drinks. The very popular Brown Sugar Milk Tea highlights the bouncy boba and creaminess of highly sweetened milk. I've tried failed versions of this brown sugar drink but from my taste test it seems that Bubble bear can do it right. For the sweet tooth! The Iced Black Sesame Latte had a very savory, lightly sweetened and slightly sandy texture which I liked but I tried this drink after it had sat for a bit. I can't give a conclusive opinion on these drinks since I haven't had a whole cup to myself. Overall, it's a great spot to get milk tea boba (in my case grass jelly) drinks. It is worth the wait if you've got 15 min to spare. I'm looking forward to how this place progresses and wish them well. *If you read this far don't look at my profile for other reviews because you'll find more novice essays !

Taiyaki is a delicious Japanese street food. A fish shaped pastry stuffed with filling like read…read morebean paste & custard. In the warmer months the taiyaki are also stuffed with soft serve ice cream. This street food has become popular in the USA with dedicated taiyaki ice cream spots popping up, and we finally have a shop in Alaska that serves this delectable treat. Softer opened at the end of December in the Diamond center food court. I went to check them out in February, and the taiyaki were fresh, crispy, and had a decent amount of filling. Now the taiyaki wasn't the same consistency as the ones I had in Japan, but it's not really fair to compare things in Alaska to their country of origin. The texture wasn't 100% correct, but it was pretty nicely crispy, and not overly chewy. I had heard from a few other people that when they went the texture wasn't correct & too chewy so consistency may be a bit of an issue, but they are a new business to that can be rectified. The soft serve ice cream was also very good. I ordered 2 "upside down" Taiyaki ice creams which comes with choice of 2 toppings. You can just order a Taiyaki filled with ice cream which doesn't come on a cup, or the Taiyaki pastry on its own without ice cream. If you're not feeling the Taiyaki you can also just get the soft serve ice cream, a milkshake, or a snow bowl (this looks like a variation of bingsu). I ordered chocolate soft serve with a Nutella filled Taiyaki topped with sprinkles, and a matcha/chocolate swirl soft serve with an ube filled Taiyaki topped with Oreo & graham cracker crumbs. The portion size on the soft serve was good for the price ($7). The chocolate ice cream was standard chocolate soft serve, but I really liked the Nutella taiyaki. The matcha ice cream actually had a strong, and not overly artificial matcha tea flavor. Next time I won't get it swirled with chocolate as the chocolate overpowered the matcha. I don't know if I'd get the ube filled taiyaki again. The ube filling was pretty artificial so it's not my preference. The toppings were also fairly sparse, but that doesn't really matter to me. Overall it's a great treat. Service was quick when we went. There was no line, and you just order at a kiosk & the person makes what you order. It's located right in the mall food court by the ice rink so if you're looking for ambiance it's not really going to be this place. I definitely will be back to get some Taiyaki ice cream again, and maybe try their snow bowls. Excited to have something different in Anchorage! This place is definitely a good spot next time you want some soft serve ice cream.

Unfortunate that this is the day I decided it was about time I left a review for House Of Bread…read more House of Bread is a lovely space, airy light dining room, and lots of baked goods, and artisanal-looking jarred goods. It feels very open. They have a menu on the wall, and a chalkboard with the types of bread available that day. Husband orders cheesy broccoli soup, and she tells him "it's not really cheesy broccoli soup, it's got lots of veggies in it too" ok, he says, but still orders a bowl. I choose Tuna Salad, and I select 14 grain as my bread choice - "sorry, we're out of that", so I then choose 9 grain - "sorry, we're out of that", and so I ask for marbled rye - "sorry, we're out of that too" I'm really quite surprised, as it's 12.30 like prime lunch time, and they're out of 3 breads already? Maybe cross them off your chalkboard, so you don't have to keep disappointing people. So i choose focaccia with my fingers crossed, and all was well. The order was complete at 12.36. We sit. We wait. Twiddling our fingers. By 20 minutes I'm becoming impatient, because I'm hangry, and the dining room is not that full - maybe 5 tables. As there are 4 staff working behind the counter (could be more round the back in the bakery) I think service could be faster, to dish up a bowl of premade soup, and assemble a cold tuna salad sandwich. Anyway i get my eye on the young man making sandwiches. He's not wearing gloves, is running his fingers through his hair, and touching his face. I see a sandwich that was on the top of the shelf, and it either fell, or he threw it, onto presumably a bench below, and then reach up angrily for a new bag of bread, I don't know - maybe he made it wrong, and was starting over. By 1.02, (26 minutes later) husband could take it no more and went to get a refund. This is not the review I expected to be leaving today, as I've never had service like this here before. I've never gone here before and had to choose my bread 4 times, due to them running out. I've never had to wait so long for lunch using pre-made ingredients. I don't know what was going on, but it's nothing like all the other times we've been here, and I hope it's a one off. If I go back and see the same staff, I'll just walk straight out again and avoid another experience like this one.
