This lovely little café in comfortable downtown St. George offers some very satisfying options for breakfast and lunch. Located on Main St. in the middle of this small city, it was nicely tucked into the other businesses in that block. We walked in just before 2 PM on a Thursday, an hour before closing time. There were five or six other parties, but it was no problem to get a table in their relatively spacious dining room. The place was tidy and nicely decorated, yet it retained a modicum of simplicity to give it the feel of a Western hometown diner. We were attended to fairly quickly. Our server Samantha did a very good job of taking care of us while we were there. The menu offered many tempting and even decadent options. I decided to try the Huevos Rancheros, which came with bacon and a salad on the side. These were done a little differently than most preparations of Huevos Rancheros that I have tried. There wasn't much in the way of a "Mexican-style" bent to them. They were very cheesy but not very spicy. But they were still good and a little Tabasco or Frank's can always take care of the spice! My wife went the route of decadence with a Peanut Butter Waffle. This was a golden brown waffle prepared just right with whipped cream drizzled with caramel. It was finished with a few banana slices to give it a wonderful, though rich, blend of flavors. We had water to drink so our final bill with food, tax and tip was $36. At $18 per person by today's standards, I was happy enough with the value. I should note that there was enough to take away for another small meal, thus adding to the value. If you are in downtown St. George, I'd recommend giving this place a try. It's a great place for comfort fare. I have a partiality to downtown diners, and this is a good one.

We've eaten here before. We knew we could expect great service, wonderful food served in a welcoming atmosphere. Exactly what happened. We tried the sausage patties for the first time. Also, they had a new dragon fruit and açaí smoothie on the menu. Both were delicious. Excellent choice for a hearty breakfast and great service.

Great food, great service, clean restaurant. We are visiting from Texas and stopped by this cute quaint little breakfast spot. Portion sizes are big and menu is a good variety of food options, something for everyone, even picky eaters. We really really liked this place.

We loved this place so much, we came back a second time on our vacation! They were busy both times, but the service is great! They've been there for 30 years and are open every day of the week for lunch and all day breakfast. Although they've been there so long, everything looked fresh and clean and cared for. It has small town diner vibes. The food was all delicious and cooked on point! The sweet cream pancakes were heavenly! I tried the Bear Paw Hot Vanilla, made with milk, honey, vanilla, raw sugar, whipped cream, cinnamon and nutmeg and I fell in love! I'm glad I don't live here, because that drink could be a problem lol. Don't worry if you have to put your name on a wait list...they have seating out front and it's in the historic section, so beautiful all around.

We love stopping at Bear Paw Café whenever we pass through St. George, and this visit reminded us why. The peanut butter pancakes are absolutely unbeatable--hands down our favorite anywhere. We came in at 7 a.m., and the two servers working that morning were such a delight. We didn't catch their names, but one looked to be in her twenties and the other maybe late thirties, and both were so fun to talk to. They set the tone for a perfect breakfast. If you're in St. George and want great food and genuinely warm service, Bear Paw Café never disappoints. We can't wait to stop in again!

Two visits. Two different experiences. First time the food was good and the server was ready attentive. No refill on coffee but, okay. Second time I ordered poached eggs, I guess I didn't realize that I needed to say medium. They came medium-well hard boiled. The server took the order, delivered the food, came when I asked for the check and then disappeared. I paid at the counter with the help of one of the other three servers chatting together. Did not check to sed if there was an issue with meal or coffee refills. Going to try George's next time, service at lunch was excellent.

Another cute little diner with super easy parking around. Large menu and even larger portions. Come hungry!!! Everything that passed our table looked amazing. I wish id have gotten a waffle or crepe or something - the huevos rancheros were underwhelming. Broghan loved his french dip, looks like sandwiches are served all day! If i come back you better believe im getting something sweet.

Ok if you're in the St George area and want to enjoy some great breakfast you got to visit Bear Paw Cafe. I had the half French toast, yep filled with vanilla crème, with home fries, bacon, and over easy eggs. So good!! Lauren was my server today and treated me great!!

From the moment we arrived, every dish was exceptional. The salad was fresh and beautifully prepared, the pork belly was absolutely outstanding, and the steak was cooked to perfection with the most incredible seasoning. Every bite was memorable. The biscuit was unreal--warm, comforting, and honestly one of the best I've ever had. What touched me most was the homemade ice cream. One spoonful instantly brought me back to childhood memories of my dad making homemade ice cream for us when we were kids. It was such a special and unexpected gift to relive those moments. But what truly made the evening unforgettable was our server, Parthee. She was absolutely amazing. Her kindness, attentiveness, and genuine warmth made us feel so welcomed and cared for. She didn't just provide excellent service--she made our night. Our family has been through a lot, including the heartbreaking loss of my sister. Father's Day hasn't always been easy for my sweet dad since then. This evening gave us something precious: a new happy memory together. Parthee, thank you for your compassion and for helping create a beautiful moment for our family during a difficult season of life. We are so grateful, and we will never forget it.

We placed our appetizer and drink orders and later dinner. We simply ordered the trout, crab Mac and cheese and I ordered the duck. The Water Mellon Pork belly came out first. The pork belly was tough and hard not like times past. We really needed a steak knife and 1/2 of the 2 portions we ordered was not edible. The trout and crab mac came out and I waited and waited not 10 min but nearly 30 minutes for the duck. I spoke to our waitress and I think the manager and they kept saying it takes more time to prepare. At about 25 minutes I canceled my duck as my wife and friend were done with their meal. I was given just excuses and no explanation. I suggested that since they KNOW the duck takes longer to prepare they should have started that first. I was told by the two I spoke too that they put in the order and it's started in that order so my duck was last. So the so called Chef's who should know the duck takes longer blew it along with the wait staff. In every restaurant setting I've been in, the chef would to start what takes longer first so the table of two or more would be served at the SAME time. But not here at Wood Ash Rye. As mentioned this was one of at least four other times here. But in our years absence, the familiar faces were gone, the so called Chefs looked like line cooks and the wait staff was clueless on how to make things right. Sad....we won't be back.

We adore slipping away for lunch and settling onto the patio, where the world softens--shade drapes gently overhead, birds sing as if they've been hired just for the occasion, and time... well, time slows down enough to breathe. The service is nothing short of immaculate--attentive in that quiet, effortless way that makes you feel seen without ever being interrupted. And the food... oh, the food. The bacon-wrapped dates must have been crafted in heaven... or perhaps meant for the gods and somehow gifted to us. The tuna melt was so transcendent I found myself wondering if I had ever truly tasted tuna before... or if I had just been living a lesser version of the experience all along. And the beef bourguignon... my heavens. It was as if your grandmother--if she were also a five-star chef--had been waiting for you, simmering something rich and soulful to welcome you back after a long journey. Even the tea felt royal... and the mocktails were so delightful, so thoughtfully made, that not once did we miss the alcohol. The Painted Pony isn't just a meal... it's a return.

The Painted Pony in St. George, UT - A Cozy Gem with One Miss (Pass on the Crab Cakes)…read moreIf you're looking for a solid upscale dinner spot in downtown St. George, The Painted Pony in Ancestor Square is a strong choice. Tucked into the Tower Building, this New American restaurant nails the Southwestern-meets-fine-dining vibe: intimate indoor seating with contemporary regional art, fresh flowers, and soft lighting, plus a charming patio for when the weather cooperates. It feels romantic and relaxed without being stuffy--perfect for date night or a special occasion while visiting southern Utah.c91b9be2267e Service was attentive and friendly without hovering. Our server knew the menu well and made solid wine recommendations (they've got a nice list, and no-corkage Mondays are a nice touch if you BYO from a Utah store). Portions are generous for the price point--definitely not the tiny-plate nonsense you sometimes get at fine-dining spots. We started with the carrot jalapeño soup (bright, flavorful, and a nice kick) and the baked brie, which was rich and perfectly paired with the seasonal chutney and crostini. For mains, the bone-in pork chop and the hanger steak were highlights--well-cooked, juicy, and packed with flavor from the fresh ingredients and thoughtful sauces. The sides (mac & cheese and haricot verts) were solid too. We finished with the key lime pie, which was a bright, creamy winner. One note, though: pass on the crab cakes. They're a menu staple (around $16, served with something like pomegranate salsa or poblano aioli depending on the season), but ours were mostly filler with a noticeably fishy taste. Not worth the spot on the table when there are so many stronger starters and entrées.781e4d Overall, we'd happily return to The Painted Pony. It's one of the better fine-dining options in St. George--great atmosphere, strong service, and mostly excellent food at reasonable prices for what you get. Just skip the crab cakes and you'll have a winner of a meal. 4/5 stars. Recommended for visitors and locals alike. Reservations advised, especially on weekends.

The last time I went, I think we found Jimmy Buffett's lost shaker of salt in my Gorgonzola topping for my steak. It was so salty I actually had to scrape the topping off just to stomach it, and eventually just stopped eating altogether because it hurt my tongue so bad. It's been 24 hours since I tried to eat their food, and my tongue still has cracks in it and hurts to move. That is an abnormally large amount of salt. The "Flambé" wasn't just a little salty, this was clearly a salty mistake that was made in the kitchen, and they couldn't care less that it had happened. The crème brûlée was curdled and the staff had issues serving the wine. We ended up with no apologies, even after kindly and respectfully voicing our concerns. There was three of us and a mixture of meals was had. I alway love the chicken fried steak here. It's a massive potion so be warned. There's a smaller order but why not go big. That's served with gravy, house potatoes or hash browns, eggs and biscuits. The biscuits alone is the size of a baseball. Then the tri tip meal with onion rings and cole slaw. And a chicken Cobb salad. Let me just say, the size of the salad was enough to feed 2 maybe 3 people. It was enormous. Food wise, everything was good. The only thing this time, the chicken fried steak was a bit overcooked and crunchy. Even with the gravy, it was still too much. But besides that, the meal was nice. Service was amazing.
