I came across this place a very long time ago while on a bus to work. I finally made it out here to try their beers. I got a flight and the beers were good. They even had an IPA I could get along with. The bartender was a super chill chick and was very helpful. I drank outside on the patio in the back. Bear Roots has incredible reviews, so we made it a stop on our brewery tour one day. The beer was solidly average for the area, which isn't a bad thing. I'm just not sure it warrants a repeat visit. First of all, the brewery location is just awful. It looks like it took over a rental space from a payday loan shop. This part of Vista is extremely rundown and looks impoverished, to be honest. Usually, brewery tap rooms are either far away in an industrial park or situated in a good pedestrian-friendly location. This was neither. We were looking around for it and shocked to find it sandwiched in this strip mall with very few parking spaces. There are maybe 20 spaces they share with a couple of other businesses. Just bizarre. Inside the brewery, they've really decked the place out to look nice. There's even a homebrew supply store taking up space in the taproom. We took a look at the taplist, and they have probably 12 house beers to choose from. We did two different sampler flights of different beers. In-depth notes are below. After sampling just about everything on tap, it was just not at a level that would have me considering a return visit. The styles were very basic. The flavors were unimpressive. Considering the poor location, I don't get the draw. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *Bear Cookie Sweet Stout: We tried this on nitro. The nitro didn't seem to be done correctly as the beer was flabby and thin-bodied. Especially for a beer that was supposed to sweet and dessert-like, it was weak and watery with mild bitterness and a hint of oily slickness on the palate. I don't think this turned out as intended. (2/5) *San Diego Blackout Black IPA: This was nutty, sharp, and intense like a Black IPA is supposed to be. It did get a touch rough after a few sips, though. And there was lingering grape soda aftertaste. (2/5) *Pineapple Express NE-Style IPA: This was a really good hazy IPA. However, practically every brewery in the country is figuring out how to brew these. (4/5) *Rooted in Nelson IPA: For such an expensive hop varietal, this Nelson IPA had nothing that reminded me of Nelson hops. The flavors were muted and the beer itself was weak and watery. (2/5) *Brut IPA: Brut IPA is love it or hate it. I thought they did a good job. It wasn't too bitter and had a sparkling white wine-like flavor and super dry finish. (3/5) read more

This place was awesome! And the people were very friendly. we were greeted by the owner himself and one of the workers - we decided to get the flight of 5 sampler beers and they were all so good! (well..I drank all the lighter beers and my husband took his duty on drinking the darker ones! like always lol) There's so many awesome breweries around us in vista (we have yet to visit them all!) but this one was smaller then most...BUT it was neat. the kind of place you would go for a good beer after a long day of work lol I recommend it if ya just wanna stop by and have a few! Awesome brewery tucked inside a strip mall of vista. My friend and I explored Yelp trying to find a brewery neither of us had been to yet and I'm so happy we decided on Bear Roots. The room is large and roomy, the decor is similar too booze brothers but has more of a restaurant style seating (aka lots of tables and chairs, score!). Moe and Terry (?) were working, we talked most with Moe who was extremely friendly and great to chat with. The beers are $6-$7 as oppose to the usual $5 for most breweries but in my opinion, the beer is worth it. I only tried the Nelson American IPA and my friend had one of the pale ales. Initially, I thought my beer looked way too yellow to be a decent IPA but I was pleasantly surprised! It almost had a lemonade flavour at first sip, then at the end you taste the hops. Along with serving great beer, Bear Roots is a supplier for all your home brewing needs. Food is not served here but there are a few Mexican joints a few doors down and Felicia's Italian delivers here! I'm so bummed I'm leaving to head back to Australia on Wednesday or I'd totally spend more time here. I hope to hear more great things about this place and wish you guys the best! read more

This hot little spot is top on my list for amazing San Diego breweries. The passion they have for brewing is apparent in the quality of their beers. They are creative and talented in mixing flavors to create delicious brews. Their Peanut Butter Milk Stout tastes like a Reeses!!! The Scotch Ale is smooth and very drinkable. The Triple Belgium (Bite The Bullet) is so yummy that even someone who doesn't prefer Belgiums (like me) can still enjoy it! Yes, their drafts are $7/pint. yes, that is more expensive than most places. Yes, the beers are worth it. They use high quality ingredients and it shows. They chose a unique location in downtown Vista that is starting to turn around and a lot of cool new businesses are popping up in the area. Parking is to a minimum so most likely you will have to park on the street or park in another parking lot in the shopping center next to it. They did a really good job of setting everything up. When you first walk in they have supplies that you can purchase to brew your own beer. Being that i haven't brewed my own beer before i was surprised to see how many different options for grains and other items there were. I am looking forward to taking one of their weekend classes in the future to learn how to brew beer. The bar itself is nice, but a little small. It is one of the smaller breweries around so the opening weekend was pretty packed. I had to stand the whole time since all the seats were taking, but that wasn't too bad. I tried their Peanut Butter Stout, which was actually good. I did like the fact that they joked about having a peanut butter beer just like the other places. It was very flavorful and good! Also had their Scottish Ale which was pretty flavorful as well. I think the best beer i had was called Bite the Bullet. At first i thought they were out of it since there was a line through the name, however after looking closely i realized it was a bullet traveling through the name. The beer was 12%, but surprisingly very light in taste. The only take away is how high the prices were for the beer. Most of them were $7 which seems really high for a price of beer in Vista. Most of the local breweries are in the $4-6 range so to be priced outside of that will be interesting to see how they do. That higher price could run some people off being that there are a lot of good places to drink around town and if it comes to price they may lose a share of the market. The owner was walking around and talking to everyone welcoming them to the opening weekend which was nice to see. Overall a nice new brewery in Vista and another great option for beer in the ever growing market of craft breweries in North County. read more

So really, this hidden gem is probably the best microbrewery in San Diego, IMO. Not only are the staff down to earth and fun, but the beers are off the chain good. I'm a porter and stout guy, and I enjoy the occasional Belgian and IPA. They have a "Bear Cookie" peanut butter milk stout that has real PB flavor (not that imitation PB flavor that so many use) and a rich dark creaminess that tastes like warm cookies. They also make a float version, using nitro Bear Cookie. OMG. But my new favorite beer is the Bite the Bullet, a triple Belgian that's 12.6% and just wraps you in its warm, loving embrace, lays you down gently on the couch and has its way with you. First Impressions - Be careful, you can easily drive right by this little gem. It is a small location, but more comfortable than most of the tasting rooms that you come to. There is a lot of seating and a full store for home brewers. Very cool concept. Tasting One - The Scottish Ale: Remarkably smooth. It found a way to be unique, but still familiar. With so many micro brews you can get these really random flavors that don't make sense. This was smooth, malty and delicious! Tasting Two - Peanut Butter Stout: Everyone has had the version from the Beaver, and I have to say on first tasting I prefer this one. Smooth flavor with a full peanut butter taste. The true test will be if they can keep it consistent. *fingers crossed* Tasting Three - Bite The Bullet: This was tasty, bright and with a light floral finish. A lovely light to end the night on. The Staff: Knowledgeable and friendly! All of the things that a tasting room should have. The POS system is a bit weird, but I am sure I will get used to the new technologies. I love this place! This location is right down the street from my house so it's perfect! Atmosphere 5/5 This is a fun place to hang out, there's a pool table and some board games. A couch and plenty of tables and chairs, it's dog friendly which is a major plus. You can bring your own food, but they don't serve anything there. It's also cool because they offer a home brewing kit with all the necessities there. You can also sign up for classes with one of their brewers as well. Service 5/5 I always love the beer tenders, they are always so nice and helpful. They will let you taste things until you find one you like. They are also really good and suggesting a beer based off of what you prefer in beers. Always a fun time, and never any bad service. Beer 5/5 I absolutely love the beer selection at this brewery! Some can tend to be a bit on the sweater side, but if your not the biggest fan of beer it could help turn your tastebuds to liking something new. The gingers island is my top favorite, it's a 5.9%. There are notes of ginger and vanilla, sometimes the color is lighter than others depending on the brewing. I literally crave this beer it's so sweet and yummy! My friends and I just tried the Pb Vanilla Cream, which blows mother earths Cali creamin out of the park. It's. 7.1% and doesn't taste like it. It's smooth and sweet and has such an aromatic smell that you get a full blast of flavor with every sip. My husband likes the bit the Bulleit which is a Belgium triple at a 11.9%. And for not liking Belgium beers myself it was actually pretty good. It's not as malty as some of them can get. read more

Seriously one of the best breweries I've ever been to. Such a relaxing, fun vibe. Our bartender Nick was super cool and awesome to talk to. They also have lots of fun games to play while you're hanging out drinking like Scrabble and my favorite: Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots! They do a game where they give you a deck of cards and if you guess the top card of the deck you get a free pint. If you guess the same suit you get a free taster. My husband guessed the top card. Still can't believe it! Our fave beer of the night was the scotch ale. All of their beers are awesome. This place also has everything you need to brew your own beer at home. If you ever thought a Scottish ale is too heavy, try this. Dark and pleasant. As of this day they were still required to have food and host described the pizza as little so I ordered one of each but they are nice size slices of perfectly good pizza. I arrived around 715 which gave me enough time to check out the deep rooted double IPA and the Scotch ale that is the most popular. They were both fabulous!! This place will definitely take off and do well since they are already producing great beer - and they are a brewing supply store that has an awesome selection of hops and malts and equipment to brew your own. With so many breweries in the area, it's hard to stand out. Bear Roots Brewing doesn't have the largest selection of beers, but I would put them at the top of my list for quality. They were out of a couple beers when I stopped by to taste, but I was able to get a flight of five beers ($10) and I didn't exhaust their list of available beers. The bartender (Tony) was super helpful and even offered to give us splashes of beers before we committed to our tasters. I'm partial to IPAs, but I really liked the Nelson and Hazy IPAs. We had the option to order food from two nearby restaurants, so we got the loaded tots from Flying Pig Pub. So good! They were delivered directly to our table at Bear Roots. read more

I came to Bear Roots on a gift card for a flight. My coworker loves them and knew I'd be into them as well. It seems like every time I'm here a simple flight turns into beers which then turns into me leaving with a growler or some merch. Their beer gets me there fast. I adore the inside of Bear Roots with exposed wood and miner style interior. They also sell home Brewing stuff like hops and different types of accents to add to your bear. Quite a rare find right there alone. Their beer selection is ever rotating with fruits or deep barrel aged beers. The people that surround the bar usually have long beards which makes this place all that much greater. I like the vibes Bear Roots throws out. read more
