Please be advised that when you go to Bear Valley Community Hospital ER, it is very possible that they will transport you to another medical facility. The staff in the ER are very efficient and professional and treat patients and their family with respect. If the ER doctor decides you need to be transported, they select a medical facility that will take the patient regardless of location. Recently, my husband was transported from Bear Valley to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The medical center has a horrible reputation, which I can now confirm, and is 80 miles from our home down the mountain. After 10 days, he is finally home. I will certainly think twice about going to Bear Valley ER again. If driving down the mountain to a hospital of my choice is an option, I will certainly do that in the future. read more

Very rude and unprofessional front staff in ED registration . They can only tell you " we have critical patients right now and I am sorry for the wait." Had to wait for 6 hours to get stitches to my left elbow/ forearm and the resident doctor that performed this seemed like it was her first time. There was cross contamination many times on the sterile field and the wound wasnt cleaned well enough. Then she proceeded to ask if i got the xray done and i said no i asked the person in front about it but was never called . She said well we need urine to clear pregnancy to get the xray . I told her i am fine without the xray since i have been there for soo long already and wanted to head home . She wanted me to sign a AMA form but I was confused since i just waited 6 hours before my wound was cleaned and taken care of. Refused to sign paperwork since i just spent half a day in the ED for treatment . I made the doctor aware that i am a nurse as well and was prescribed keflex only which doesnt have MRSA coverage . I got home to fluids gushing out from the wound and had to go back to have another hospital clean and close wound appropriately .and prescribce bactrim for better coverage . I would never come to this hospital again and i am suprised they are allowed to operate . I work as a nurse and the degree of unorganized , rude , unprofessional and unsanitary conditions i saw is actually appalling and a disgrace read more

I had an emergency and went to the Bear Valley ER where I was greeted with such warmth and professionalism! From the front desk to the nursing staff to the doctor-ALL were VERY professional, and helped in keeping me calm by their work ethics. My nurse was the best nurse I've ever had. Summary: Clinical staff is great. Long wait times (understaffed or busy). Single unprofessional employee. Be prepared to wait a few hours. We were in the lobby for 4 hours before being seen by a doctor. I'm assuming they are under staffed. There was a girl who was deathly ill and sobbing in the lobby. I don't think anyone checked on her or spoke to her despite her cries. I separated my shoulder. The first time they called me was to get my blood pressure and general info, so I was invited inside the clinical area. While I was sitting there, some dude was walking around. I don't remember exactly what he was wearing, but I don't think he was in scrubs. He was telling me he thinks my shoulder is broken and that it's gonna be a lengthy recovery. Not something anyone would want to hear. I questioned his credibility and asked him really? He said we can "bet money on it"... It was really unprofessional. He wanted to prove some weird point that he's confident that he can guess my diagnosis. Later the doctor came with the X-Ray results and it ended up just being a separation. And no broken bones (thanks weird unprofessional dude for the awkward interaction and trying to convince me that I had a broken bone). The clinical staff was great. The doctor was caring and answered my questions. I was also helped by a male nurse, he was good too and hardworking. If only the wait time wasn't so long, but I understand the clinical staff did their best. Either they are understaffed or lots of people had incidents that day, hence the long wait time. read more

The only complaint I have is there are meetings and Bible study at the hospital. They utilize patient parking and you have to park on the other side, by the Brenda Boss center. It's very inconvenient especially if you are disabled. read more

I absolutely hate to give poor reviews, however; I think this review could be lifesaving for others. My dad was up at their house by himself and developed a pretty bad cold or flu. We begged him to go to the hospital which he hates to do, but he did. The ER doctor looked at him and told him he just had a bad cold and should go home and rest which he did. We decided to come up to check on him in person and when we walked in the house, he was basically chair bound with eyes completely crusted over and barely coherent. We called the ambulance to take him again to the hospital. The ambulance, EMTs and paramedics were absolutely amazing. They got him to the hospital and back in to see the same doctor Who said, "why are you back". I looked at the doc and I said dad has never been this sick, I think this is something more than just a cold. He reluctantly had him get a chest x-ray which showed pneumonia plus a bad case of conjunctivitis. Dad could have easily died sitting in his chair at home had we not headed up. The check-in staff and nurses could not have been more friendly and caring. I believe sometimes the doctors become complacent and believe things aren't as serious as they actually are especially when dealing with people who are not normally sickly. I hope that one day the Big Bear hospital will draw a better group of doctors. The two stars are for the good care of the office staff, nurses and final correct diagnosis. read more

Had a stroke in March. Was given benadryl and Reglan and sent home within 2 hours, unable to see, in an UBER. July 31 2025, had another stroke, ems accusing me AND my minion daughter of a drug od! Again, was given Benedryl and Reglan. Was refused my cell phone I'm ambulance, my MINOR daughter was left at our house alone. I was sir lifted to Riverside, had a Stent put in. No phone. No one knew where I was Ems are absolutely abhorrent for the accusations and leaving my daughter alone, knowing they would not let me have my phone. We are moving off this mountain. You are better off stroking out than letting EMS or that hospital near you. You will die by their hands. ​​ read more

I was treated at this hospital on Thanksgiving 2023. I was up there, just for Thanksgiving, celebrating it with family. I went in for what I thought was a urinary tract infection. The doctor was so diligent who treated me, that he did an extra exam where he swabbed for a different type of infection. He later told me, "You need to get a Pap smear ASAP. Your cervix doesn't look right." Because of his diligence, I am here today. Other hospitals I have gone to in the past with UTI symptoms do not do the swab that he did. They leave the woman with a large Q-tip, and have her do it herself. Had he not been so diligent, I have no doubt I would not be here. I immediately scheduled a Pap smear (thanks to his urging) and biopsies were taken just a week later. That led to a surgery in January that found the highest grade of cervical pre-cancer all over my cervix. However, it had not invaded more than the top layer of my cervix, so a hysterectomy would save my life. I am two weeks out from my hysterectomy and have no more risk of cancer, thanks to this amazing doctor. I wish I remembered his name. I called the hospital to get his name, and when I do, I will update my review. Thank you so much to this hospital for saving my life. read more

Lousy and inaccurate service. Wrong diagnosis on my foot. A "sprain" was actually broken fragments and torn ligaments. Did not even offer a medical boot/shoe! I am now paying the price with major surgery. This is your health that we are talking about. Go down the hill. I truly wish I had. Horrible and very time consuming billing department. Almost two hours on the phone and still not resolved with two insurances. To add an update, my total has gone from one amount to the whole balance! With two insurances! The billing department is clueless. Absolutely clueless. I don't know what to do. All this for an inaccurate diagnosis. Their time is valuable and not yours. I just had one of many procedures at BVCH. From the volunteer in the waiting room, to the registration personnel, to my destination; radiology, I could not ask for kinder and more professional treatment. The radiology tech assisted me in getting my latest blood results. Anthony inserted my IV with patience, as I have small veins, and Scott gave me all the time needed for my procedure. This hospital is a mess from start to finish. Checked in, and the one silver lining is that the nurses were very caring. Every thing else was an absolute disaster. No doctor on staff that could do a basic procedure, and one had to be called in. When he arrived, horrible bedside manner, looked immensely incapable (very pessimistic about a common every day procedure and looked unsanitary ie dirty nails, confused speech). I decided to get a second opinion and go to another hospital. Stayed a VERY short amount of time w very little done medically. Later got a massive bill, and when I called to pay, explained the situation to billing and we negotiated a reduced rate, which I paid on the spot. Now they've been sending me a bill for the balance and refuse to honor what they had offered. Paying the balance because I want to be done with this horrible experience and hospital. Don't go there! Go down the mountain and go anywhere else. Not only are they NOT EQUIPPED to care for you, they'll send you a massive bill and be deceitful with billing read more

I don't really understand such negative reviews about the BVCH and the ER. Maybe a really bad day for some people. Going to the ER can be horrible, but I had to go in on a weekend when both my local doctor and the Urgent Care were closed. We were the only ones waiting and were seen quickly. Absolutely everyone I had in my room were kind, cheerful and professional. I was also impressed with the mobile XRAY machine that they brought right into my room so I never had to move. That technician was so cheerful and I appreciated that. Turns out I had bacterial pneumonia. They gave me medicine in and IV and then sent me out with a prescription for an antibiotic. I appreciated the doctor's calm approach and the way he explained everything. I can't think of any reason not to give them a good review. read more

The staff at this hospital are so kind and caring! From the moment we got here, the man up front (Jaine) was welcoming and got through all of his questions very quickly, as I was clearly in a lot of pain. He saw that I was crying later on while waiting, so he even brought out an ice pack for me without my asking! They were very fast at getting me back to see a doctor as well. Although this is the only Big Bear hospital so you won't have many other options to go to, rest assured that you will be taken care of here! read more

They were only the few of the kind doctors/nurses there! Timothy let me participate in withdrawing blood from my mom, (the patient) and convert the clean sample from the syringe to the vial! I been here 3xs never had a problem with medical care. This past week I went in for shortness of breath and swelling. They kept me for 7hrs ran a ton of test. Gave me meds that helped. They diagnosed me with chf in one visit. Going to my dr would of taken months. Now I am on the road to recovery. Also the wait time was 20 mins because they wee busy. Another thing everyone in the er ware helpful and friendly if I needed anything anyone would help me. I never once heard oh let me find your nurse. The dr was on top of everything. I broke my leg skiing on Christmas Day.The hospital staff was professional and treated my fracture with a splint, but were heartless when I couldn't find a ride to my hotel - Uber and Lyft had no drivers and I couldn't drive. The nurse out front did try to find someone in the hospital to drive me because it was icy out and she was afraid I would fall on the ice using crutches. At that time, the hospital was not busy, I believe at least two staffers were just sitting on their chairs. The staff provided numbers to Uber and Lyft drivers, apps which I had tried repeatedly to no avail. When I called the hotel for a ride they gave me a cab number that was an answering machine; I was unable to find another cab in Big Bear. It was dark, around 7pm and the temp was 34 out. I crutched out to my car, put as much luggage as would fit in my backpack, slung my computer bag around my neck and started crutching 1/2 mile to my hotel, in icy conditions, on pain meds with a broken leg in freezing temp - bare toes in a splint. As I crutched, my leg & splint dragged on the pavement more than once due to the uneven conditions, the swinging bag and the effort of keeping my leg lifted. Eventually I reached the hotel, thankfully without falling, by avoiding the patches of snow on the way. When I finally made it to my room, I was so exhausted I crawled in on all fours, shaking. Here's a hospital that on Christmas Day didn't have enough heart to help someone with a broken leg get to their hotel that was only 1/2 mile away, making them crutch their way in the dark thru ice and snow with their luggage while on pain meds in freezing conditions. If I had fallen on my broken leg - a very likely scenario - I could have damaged it worse, or I may not have been able to get up again. read more

Mountain bike crash on the mountain this past bike park season .... left me with a pretty banged up shoulder... I didn't know much about the emergency medical services here in Big Bear but thanks Yelp for guiding me to nearest emergency room! Easy to find, ample parking, as I held my limp shoulder and made the short walk to the ED waiting room. I checked in to the comfortable waiting room, was worried about a long wait... but nope, I was seen pretty immediately and was given an ice pack for my shoulder while I waited for X-ray. The nurse was super nice, helpful and administered pain meds right away as I was shaking from the amount of pain I was in. Doctor was friendly and made small talk about the injury and had pretty awesome bedside manners. So the verdict grade three AC separation but was encouraged that the healing was pretty quick. I was in and out within a couple hours with my fancy new sling. Worst part about the whole incident was that I was going to be off my bike for two months and my day of downhill MTB was cut ridiculously short. Hopefully won't have to come back to this ER but if I do, I have nothing but love for this place and the people the people that work here! read more

This place is a joke. Over 5 hours of trying to get records via the "portal" no one knows how the portal works, no one knows if I can get my images via the portal. Records will transfer you to operator or dump you into someone's VM. Or they are in meetings! I CALLED 10 times and they are always in meetings and lack customer service skills including director of records who didn't care to give me a call back to ensure I get the records I need. Then after 5-1/2 hours I'm told the portal does not load the images. They will need to email! I called John Frill office who is the CEO and to my surprise he's not available, I'm meetings. Lol. So shocked. Don't go to this hospital if you are really sick because you will probably die, they are too busy not knowing what to do with your information. read more

While on family vacation, my husband had a medical emergency. After calling, we went to BVCH rather than driving down the mountain. It's a small facility (7 beds and 3 chairs), so patience is in order as it is in larger ERs. Dr. Hansen and his nurse Tina were professional, kind and knowledgeable, with old-school bedside manners. Techs were also friendly and efficient. The office will bill our insurance, leaving us with one less worry. The care and counsel we received was outstanding, and the printed discharge papers were easy for us to understand. read more

Even though her crackling mic. ( reminds me of Danny Devito's character in taxi). If you like to be laughed at for asking about alternatives, this is your place. If you can avoid this place, you will be better served at the urgent care on big bear Blvd or any medical facility down the hill. Visiting Big bear last month and during our stay there my sister got really sick. Her heartbeat was up the roof. It was beating over 200 beats per min. The ambulance took her to the only hospital in Big Bear Lake. As soon as we drove in to the address they gave, I was looking around for the building. A building that's at least 2 or 3 stories high. But, instead, found a tiny tiny little 1 story building. Looked like a clinic. Don't judge the building by it's size... it was probably the best Hospital I've every been. The service from the nurses and doctors was impressive. We were getting updated frequently, and if we were being impatient and approached them, they were very patient in answer all our questions. They worked fast, thorough, and we were out of there withing 2 hours. Definitely not your typical hospital. read more
