I've eaten dinner at Bear Wallow for years. Good solid American food. Not a huge fan of the chicken fried steak, everything else I've had is great. Had breakfast there for the first time today, my hubby had steak and eggs and I had the grand slam (French toast with bacon and eggs) - both incredible. Bacon was the best I have ever had - I usually avoid ordering it at restaurants because it tends to disappoint but this bacon was thick, crispy, perfect. Will definitely be coming here for breakfast more often! read more

Fourth time here while passing through. Pretty happy other visits. This time, a flop. Ordered burger medium well, came out pink. Fries were hard inside from quick cooking, and very greasy. And even if they are kidding about the redneck attitude, it isn't very welcoming. Next time it's across the street. read more

I have been here several times and would definitely recommend the breakfast as the best time to go. The service and food at breakfast have been great but on the weekend or during hunting season, you need to get there early to find a seat. Lunch time have been okay for meals but nothing stands out. I have had dinner but usually on Sunday night when they have their prime rib special. They do a good job on the prime rib and it comes out pretty good and the sides are just the right size to leave room for a slice of homemade pie. However, It is only on Sunday night and not many folks stay that late to experience it. read more

There breakfast is good here but I was here for lunch. I got the patty melt. It was fine, very greasy. Husband had the blt- it was fine too. Daughter had enchilada plate- not so good. Sauce and beans both taste like they came from a can. It's just typical diner fare. I heard the sourdough burger is good. Everyone is super friendly and great service. Give it a try. read more

We eat here every time we camp at Big Lake. We love it! The staff are so friendly and welcoming. The food is "down home cooking." You're in for a great "greasy spoon" kind of experience. Definitely save room for the pie! If you're enjoying the White Mountains, we would recommend a trip to Bear Wallow Cafe for a meal. read more

I just moved to the area from CA, and eat breakfast & lunch here a lot. You can sit at a booth, table or the counter. My major word of advice is SAVE ROOM FOR HOMEMADE PIE!!!!!! The staff is nice. Some people on YELP complain about the no cell phone thing, but I appreciate it. There is nothing worse than having to listen to a loud single sided conversation. Just put your phone on vibrate and go outside to talk. Plus they have bottled beer and wine. read more

Exceptional greeting - the disposition of all staff was genuinely pleasant. Split green chile burro and sourdough melt/burger with my son. Sourdough burger was juicy but not so much that the toasted sourdough became soggy. The hearty fries were crispy but not burned. Delicious. Burro had a great flavor with decent level of spice. The tortilla can't stand up to the sauce (enchilada style) so I might order as a plate with tortilla on the side or as a dry burro in the future. The burro was accompanied by refried beans (marginal) and chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were a hit with all at the table. My daughter had the single decker club with fries and she was very pleased with her meal as well. We split strawberry-rhubarb a la mode to finish it all off. We only stopped in for the pie. It was BEST tasting homemade pie ever!!! I live near a small town known for their famous pies, Julian, CA, and they can't even compare to the pies at Bear Wallow. I had the apple, my husband had the mixed berry and my son had the pumpkin. They were so good that we made it back two days later for more! It was an 18 mile drive down a dirt road from where we were camping but it was completely worth it!! read more

My parents, grandparents, younger cousins, and I came up to this restaurant because my grandparents wanted to take us out to lunch while my parents and I were visiting from Tucson. We defiantly should have gone some place else. The servers were wonderful and very accommodating (that was their only saving grace), but the food and the atmosphere was some of the worst I've ever experienced. When you walk in you're greeted with racist bigotry they call decorations. A sticker above the bathroom read "African lion" with a picture of a lion, then right underneath "lion African" with a picture of former president Obama. It's your prerogative to have your own political views, but please, don't display it all over your place of business. Also, and this is just for my fellow vegetarians out there. They have A LOT of photos of people trophy hunting on the walls. If this makes you uncomfortable steer clear. As for the food, oh my gosh this was the worst part. 5/7 of us were sick for 2 days after eating their food! And it wasn't even good food. I ordered the plain bean and cheese burrito and when I opened it it literally had whole pinto beans in it. For $9 I expect a little more than just whole pinto beans, a tortilla, and some light cheese flecked on top. My dads was the worst though. He ordered a bean and cheese burro enchilada style....he literally got the same thing I did just with red sauce on top. And they were tiny! Not worth an extra $4 just for some sauce on top! I read a review up top saying that this restaurant doesn't like outsiders and maybe that's true. Like I said our server and all the staff were very kind, but the food and all of their chosen decorations ruined this experience. read more

Came here with a group of buddies before embarking on a backpacking trip, and what a way to get ready for the trail! Love this place, good service for dealing with all of us with a smile, and fun atmosphere. Need to make it back up to Alpine sometime, awesome little town. read more

I have to agree with Cody below, some of the staff definitely favors locals. We've been in Alpine 2 days and eaten here twice. Our server was slightly friendlier the 2nd day (but still standoffish), but the first day we were somewhat ignored, were not told of the special (which we would have ordered had we known), and received our food 5 minutes after some locals received theirs, even though we had been seated - and even ordered - before they'd even arrived! The hostess, however, was super friendly, absolutely delightful-if only she'd been our waiter... Prices are moderate. The food is average and lacking much seasoning. Breakfast is definitely better than lunch. We've been coming to Alpine for a several-day stay each summer the past 5 years and the food and service has been consistently average. I once had a 2-star meal at the Alpine Grill directly across the street, but based on their recent yelp reviews and the number of cars & diners we've seen over there the past 2 1/2 days, I think we'll switch, and save our trips to Bear Wallow for pie only. read more

I was visiting my brother in NM to do some motorcycle riding and an unexpected little gem of a town called Alpine AZ. seemed to appear in the mountains out of nowhere! Being hungry, the Bear Wallow Café seemed like a good choice for lunch. Without getting too deep into detail, the décor was rustic and enjoyable and the food was excellent. As for the people, the employees treated my brother an I like family and the customers were just as friendly! Next year we plan a trip to Moab Utah and we will have to pass the Bear Wallow Café, but I'm not going to pass it without stopping in to eat! read more

We stopped in for dinner and were warmly greeted and seated at the window overlooking the old AZ 666. I selected a pastrami on rye. When it was served I thought I was in a Jewish Deli in NY. Delicious and piled high. My spouse ordered a house salad chicken that was fresh and crisp. I will not get into the deserts here because of the text limitations so you'll have to see for your self. Great Food! Super Service. My wife, Sunshine and I have not been in your cafe in over 10 years, we stopped in on our way back to NM from Show Low with a ravenous appetite. We rarely eat out for two reasons. (1) the food and service is usually not very good, and (2) we are on a very low fixed income. We really enjoyed our visit and our meals. "We'll be back!" We just keep going back and back. Haven't had a bad meal there...never! One great thing they do besides the scrumptious food is they ban cell phones. I just hate trying to digest something as delicious as their double bacon rancher cheese burger while some jerk is barking away in my ear on his personal prestige toy. Waitresses are always caring and courteous -- I give a better tip here than I do at most other restaurants because I like their style. Stopped in here for breakfast after leaving Springerville on the bikes headed along Devil's Highway. Nice homey place. One poster said something about racist decor, but I saw nothing of the kind and the four of us, a mixed bunch to say the least had a great breakfast and will be back next time we ride in this area. read more

Rustic, cozy, I'm a fan of the homemade soup. Service inconsistent. Would give 3 stars. But that flag just needs to come down. What ever statement owner is trying to make, there is most certainly a better way to say it. A person with deeply personal experience can find a better way. Alpine, AZ is a small town that seems to pop up out of nowhere on highway 181/190. I came here to do research in the nearby Apache forest which is beautiful but after a long day tromping around in the field, I was ready for someone else to make me food. Enter the Bear Wallow Cafe...nice people, good old American food and some Mexican food mixed in there. I've been here several times and every time it's excellent and the service is stellar. The food isn't fancy but it's very fresh (which is surprising considering they have to cart that food all the way up here) and it's filling. You know its good because they're almost always filled during lunch and dinner hour despite being out in the middle of nowhere. I recommend the patty melt (nicely flavored burger on rye w/ grilled onions). Their Mexican food isn't 100% authentic (what can you expect out here) but they make their sauces fresh and not from a can and it's still good. BUT the best reason to visit the Bear Wallow Cafe has got to be their homemade pie. There is one lady who bakes all the pies from scratch and she uses only fresh ingredients including fruit. I've been during the summer and when you ask what kind of pie they have you will be blown away by the choices: apple, apple raisin, blueberry, blackberry, cherry, mix berry, peach, apricot, pecan...it all depends on what is in season and what the "pie lady cooks" but it's all good. Have it a la mode with their vanilla ice cream (which doesn't taste chemically). What makes this pie so delicious is the flakey pie crust that isn't too dry. Seriously, this pie is the best pie I've ever tasted and it almost makes me want to visit Alpine just for the pie. But the people are nice too... read more

I'm really sorry to say that this place has definitely gone downhill over the past 2 years or so. We have a summer place in Alpine so we're sure to go to all the local eateries several times a summer. The time before last the food was so-so, & the flys around our table were horrendous! Salad bar with a limit of 1 trip (!) which wouldn't have been so bad, but the bowls are those tiny wooden ones. Anyway, we have them another chance last summer...service is OK...I won't blame the wait staff, but the food was tasteless & overcooked. Supposedly noted for their pies, we ordered a slice of blueberry pie to go. When we ate it that evening it tasted like there was more flour in the filling than fruit or juice! Not too much choice in a small town like Alpine, but I would definitely stay away from BearsWallow! We will NOT ever go back. I'll eat a Hungry Man frozen dinner first. read more

During a 2005-2006 construction job assignment in Springerville, my husband and I lived in Eagar, AZ. During that time, every Sunday morning we drove up to Alpine for breakfast at Bear Wallow and it is perhaps at the top of our happiest memories. The people there were absolutely the best sort of people for their line of work. We were always welcomed and the place seemed always to be happy and full to the seams with not only locals, but people like us living temporarily in the Round Valley or people passing through. The food was delicious every time. I read the review about pie and I laughed out loud... One time I went up with friends on a weekday and the pie lady had just baked up a batch... I looked across the cafe and spotted the owner Vada enjoying a slice... the look on her face made me order a slice! She was no bigger than a minute and how she could even HAVE pie like that around her all the time without gaining an ounce!!! No justice in the world! Anyway, Bear Wallow Cafe is a wonderful place and if you ever go that way, don't miss it. During the horrible recent fire, I called and they were still standing. read more

home town cooking at its best???? Love the fried zucchini and hot chocolate in the winter time. French dip is my favorite. One critique. I wished for the salad bar to be fresh lettuce and not pre-packaged. Crispy chicken salad is to die for but wish for fresh lettuce. Don't EVER try the pies or you wil crave them constantly. Bear Wallow is a very small place and the décor is not as racist as they seemed on the other reviews but the place is definitely Republican due to the big Trump Pence sticker on the front door. As for the food, absolutely terrible, everything tasted like it was either microwaved or from a frozen food package. The staff was nice, I had no problems with them, but the food, oh lord do not spend an unreasonable amount of money here. The tacos are terrible and the fish sandwhich tasted like the fish sticks you buy at walmart. The only thing that was reasonably okay was the burgers. It's honestly a tourist trap, and if you can't wait to go eat at a nearby McDonalds or something, be prepared. read more

My wife and myself drove to Alpine from Lakeside and stopped at the Bear Wallow Café for lunch. She had the Patty Melt and I had the sourdough Burger. It was very disappointing. The hamburgers where nearly RAW. They had no taste because they had no seasoning on them at all. Maybe a little salt and pepper would have helped. I will say that if you like RAW burgers then this is the place. The Home cut fries were like eating limped potatoes. I almost must say that the head waitress was not very cordial. No thank you or anything. We probably should have gone to the Grill across the street. read more

Visited and had breakfast on 6/2. Waitress was extremely rude to a customer in back dining area. My food was less than ok hash browns were stale with strange taste. I told the waitress and her reply was new potatoes would taste the same. Very pricey $16 breakfast and coffee strong political statement being made. Well, the food was okay, but not worth the big city prices. We had two dinners, two pieces of pie with ice cream, ice tea and it was over 45 bucks. Service was friendly, but it IS kind of tense if you're not a right-winger with the Confederate flags, Trump-Pence signs, racist stuff and other weirdness. Was not impressed with their Mexican fare. Both red and green chiles were flavorless. Although my green chile cheese burger tasted good, probably because the meat added some flavor. The no cell phone policy is strange. I asked the waitress about it, and she seemed very nervous in her answer, but it's for real. I just wanted to check my Google map. Nothing sinister. Bottom line: food is okay, service friendly, crazy conservative vibe inside is depressing. I part-owned a restaurant, and we never advertized our political views.
