After living in Ann Arbor for 5 years and driving past this place (literally) over a hundred times, I figured it was about time I gave it a try. MAN, am I glad I did! Seriously, THE best chai tea latte I've ever had. It took the chai tea to the next level as it was a little extra cinnamon-y than I'm used to and with the accompanying ginger, cardamom, and almost an background pepper, it was unreal. I didn't want my cup to go empty. I savored and sipped so slow, and when it got cold I didn't just down it all in one gulp - NO NO! Love a lot of things about this place. Prices are reasonable, love that it is 'car-hop' style service and they are in a historic building that is adorable and might otherwise be torn down. The not so great. 1. Get a latte every time and the taste is anything but consistent, ranging from undrinkable to delicious. On two visits, all I could taste was a terrible burnt flavor and after one sip poured my $5 iced latte onto the street at the first red light. 2. It often takes 15-20 minutes to get one drink if there is even just a bit of a line and once you are in line, you cannot get out. So, hope you hit them on a good day when your drink will be delicious, not undrinkable and make sure you have plenty of time to wait. read more

Who says you can't walk through the drive-through? Bearclaw Coffee is within walking distance of my place of employment. Although it is a drive-through shop, the baristas happily take my walk-up orders at the back door. They even have a little "Walk-Up" window. The baristas are always friendly and quick on their feet. I usually order either coffee, an americano, or a latte. My repeated visits have proven Bearclaw's drinks to be high quality and consistent. Now I just need summer to come around so I don't have to stand in the snow while I wait for my drink! read more

Have you ever heard of an ATM turning into a coffee joint? Well, this is what happened with Bearclaw. What used to be just the elusive University Bank's drive-thru ATM is now a drive-thru coffee stop, adding an element of wonder to an already quagmirish intersection--not to mention lots and lots of advertising. The latte and cup of coffee I had from here were pretty decent. The baked goods, one hit and one miss. But my real problems are (1) this place has so many signs screaming "I'M OPEN!" on its little peninsula that it's started to seem desperate to me, and (2) that bear with wings coming out of its face logo is just creepy, man. read more

Their coffee is really bad. I normally get a latte from any coffee shops. Once I ordered an iced latte from the Bearclaw; it was too strong. The other time I got a latte; it tasted like the coffee was burnt. The smell was far from a great smell of espresso. I don't know how they won the best coffee place in Ann Arbor. I love this place! Yes, it's a bit of an odd location, but very convenient when heading out of Ann Arbor. And the shop is adorable! In terms of the coffee, I've only had positive experiences. Baristas are prompt and friendly, with great attention to detail. I've made alterations to a number of drinks here and have never gotten an incorrect order. And I love strong coffee, so this is perfect for me. I've only gotten food here once, a muffin. It was tasty- not spectacular, but not bad for breakfast on the go. I've been coming here on and off for years, but I feel that in the last year and a half or so, this location has really stepped up their coffee game. Previously, the coffee drinks were often oversweetened, but lately they have been totally on point. The location is totally charming and the staff has always been exuberantly friendly and polite. The selection of pastries and such is above par, and includes selections from Washtenaw Dairy and Dexter Bakery. I'm really glad this place is a drive thru so it can be an efficient part of my morning routine. If they added coconut milk and an almond croissant supplier, I ... would be in trouble. read more

Most times they mess up my coffee order (3/4 times) and this most recent time the women told me if I wanted the correct order I would have to pay for another one. 1 - ordered iced chai and it came hot, then they were very nice and remade it. 2- ordered iced coffee with milk and came black but I was in a rush and had to leave. 3- ordered frozen drink and came iced and the women was rude and obnoxious. Don't even think about walking up. They completely ignore you. I stayed at the hotel across the street and walked over on a 40 degree day. Stood outside for 10 minutes after ringing the bell and hearing the employees say "be right with you " while I watched them serve all the cars instead. I can't speak for every Bear Claw location, but every cup of coffee I've had here has tasted pretty iffy. You might as well just go down the street to the Starbucks in Barnes & Noble - at least then you'll know what you're getting yourself into. Drive-through caffeine! I love it. On a cold and nasty day I pull up and out pops the friendly and polite espresso fairy. He takes my order and returns quickly with a hot, strong double latte plus a complimentary tootsie roll. Off I go, caffed up and sweetened up. Service is friendly and quick, coffee is strong. they somehow ran out of hot cocoa and i had to settle for coffee. the vanilla latte tastes like watered down black coffee. they should definitely include more items besides just coffee and tea so that someone like me that doesn't like either can rely on another drink when they're out of the one they wanted. suggestion? different flavors of hot cocoa. more flavoring in coffee. more varieties of coffee like caramel and chocolate. just make things that others will be okay with besides coffee because not everyone enjoys coffee. or tea. service was good though. left a tip. but please be more prepared when it comes to a huge homecoming game at a high school when it is 50 degrees. thank you. read more

I, too, am writing my first Yelp posting as a therapeutic measure to recover from visiting Bearclaw Coffee. I live here in Ann Arbor, but had never visited due to the sheer geographical oddity of the location. However, I was looking for a new coffee shop today, and fooled by the charming exterior, I stumbled into a trap. My experience was eerily similar to that of Maren below: I also dropped in with my sister, we ordered two bear claws, and received two different pastries--neither of which were bear claws. One was a chocolate croissant with filling that tasted like that kind of frosting you buy in a tube at the supermarket with a little red tulip on it, and the other was the aforementioned stale cheese-filled monstrosity (with some "jam" in it to add insult to injury). Of course, it was not until we had already tipped the kindly hipster at the dutch door and walked away that we peeked into our bags and saw what the Secret Santa of Bearclaw Coffee had chosen for our fabulous destiny. Then again, I think that guy earned his tip, since we are now asphyxiating with laughter over a business that cannot even distinguish the item it is named after. Great coffee spot. Went there Monday of this week for the first time, was back again on Wednesday with the wife. Have tried the Black Bear Mocha (hot and frozen) and Grizzly Mocha (hot). Both are fantastic. Would recommend to anyone new to Ann Arbor, as well as to all of those who have driven by like I used to and never stopped. The "bearclaw" pastry is not like any bearclaw you've ever had from a real bakery - it's more like chemical cream inside a piece of bread - literally vending-machine quality. Straight coffee was...adequate. Service was mediocre - I got the wrong pastry, and when she replaced it the server did not feel the need to apologize...much less anything along the lines of "thank you for your business." I guess it's worth one star for being able to get a small coffee and a pastry for (just) under four bucks - that feels like a bargain these days. read more

The location sucks. It's a pain to pull into and can be a little bit confusing. That's the only bad thing I can think of about Bearclaw. I've lived In AA for 6 years and this is the best coffee I've had since moving here. It's not terribly expensive either. If you like coffee, you need to try Bearclaw. read more
