I'm not one to be rude about service but I came into this location with my girlfriend this Saturday morning and first got faced incompetent math. I should've never try to break a 100$ dollar bill. The poor lady couldn't do the simplest math and had to wait for her to go into back and get a calculator to figure it out. Besides that I then have to continue to wait 22 minutes for my bagel to come out for me and guess what! It was the wrong bagel with avocado which I never said to add on (also more expensive) when I tell you it wasn't even busy.. it really wasn't at all. Gosh I hate giving 2 stars... but I spent over $20 for a latte and a bagel sandwich and both were COLD, and it wasn't even busy. So the latte was cold b/c they clearly didn't get the milk warm enough (it was made quickly and didn't sit around, so that's the only possible conclusion). Then I waited for over 20 minutes for my bagel sandwich and even asked what happened to it... and yet, I continued to wait another 5 minutes. When I got it, it was wrapped in foil and COLD. I mean cold. Nothing warm left in it... if this is how it is when it's not busy, what happens when it IS busy? I likely won't return here when I can go to York for a much better experience. So...... it's decent but how do they have the audacity to call themselves a third wave independent coffee bar they most obviously are second wave with some minor enhancements on the second wave independent coffee bar. Yes - they definitely are NOT first wave. I would rather drink from a dirty pond than frequent a first wave independent coffee bar. Black diesel is by no means but it's not great. Customer service hit or miss, sometimes you will get a barista that is good and personable and other times you will get one that barely wants to take your order. Variety is solid and weekly coffee menu is exciting! Drink suggestions happen sometimes. read more

On a recommendation, I stopped here on the way to the airport. The folks here were super friendly... from the cashier who took my order to another who answered a camera question. I ordered their Motors Blend drip coffee. From their available sweeteners, I was not the target audience of this coffee shop. Other than regular/refined sugar served from a dispenser, they had Stevia and raw sugar packets. Even with the raw sugar, I enjoyed the taste of their drip coffee. On a sad note, I had selected the table directly across from the display case. One of the items appeared to be a chocolate croissant. If I had not recently eaten a large Easter brunch, I would have definitely ordered one. read more

I've been here twice since moving to Ann Arbor last week - that's how good it is. Once over the weekend, the service was fast and my drink (a special on the menu) was amazing. I came once during the weekday morning to order that same drink and it took almost 20 minutes to make that drink. I probably won't stop by during morning rush hour anymore since it seemed like they only have one individual making the drinks but it's a super cute spot to get work done and have great coffee! read more

Start with the good: the coffee is great. Classic barista drinks (though they somehow didn't know what a lungo was...). The light! Windows wrapped around a cozy, rectangular space, the opposite wall brick-lined, the bar and tables echo reclaimed wood. Yes, it's so light because it is at the intersection of two extremely busy arteries, but it is set back--you will probably notice that it is a renovated gas station from the 1920s. Nice atmosphere, usually a good number of visitors working or socializing. Adds up to a potentially perfect small café. The less good: Yes, it is pricey, as others have mentioned. You expect places like this to be, but it seems exaggerated even with those expectations. There is actually no way to really know what you will pay since they don't list prices on the food and coffee lists, which is obnoxious. Today the really bad thing was the barista was training another barista and I could do nothing to get their attention to order, the awareness of surroundings was at sub-zero. Stopped by on a weekday afternoon. The guy who took my order was friendly, but the rest of the staff seemed like a young bunch that were more interested in their own conversations. The interior was spacious and had a lot of seating. I prefer coffee shop ambience to be a bit more comfortable/cozy but that's just my taste. They have coffee, teas, pastries, gelato and some food options. I tried one of their seasonal lattes - I usually like my coffee sweeter but it was too sweet. This is such a gem. They have kombucha on tap with rotating flavors and that was such a pleasant surprise the first time I went. Their coffee and tea options are extensive and tasty. They have nice indoor and outdoor seating and a welcoming atmosphere. Onsite parking too which is a plus so close to campus but be aware of the one way loop it's set up in and watch for the busy traffic at the Packard and Stadium intersection. They have many indoor seats with outlets but the seats are quite close to each other so if you case about 6-feet social distance, they also have outdoor seats if you like. After visiting Black Diesel 10+ times, I'm ready to write an honest review that I hope the owners or management will be open to reading. I live a few blocks away from BD and so badly wanted this to be my next neighborhood coffee spot, but after the last few times I've been here I leave feeling either angry, dismissed, or just confused. Let's start with the vibe. Upon walking in, the baristas couldn't care less that they have new patrons to serve. You can stand around at the register and wait for someone to greet you while you stare at their melting gelato in the front case. Finally... when you go to order... beware they won't have what you most likely want. Yesterday, they were out of draft cold brew so I asked for a pour over (remember this). The patron in front of me asked for a caprese salad, he paid, and then they told him they were out of mozzarella. A caprese salad without mozzarella is not a caprese salad. One moment that stood out to me was when I tried to pay with a gift card. I ordered my drink (with extra flavor, shot, etc.) and then was told the wifi isn't working so I can't use the gift card. They told me to wait while they make my drink and then they'll try again. I waited 5-10 minutes for my drink, had to awkwardly go back to the register, wait in line, try to pay again, only to be told it's not going to work so I owe the full amount for an expensive drink that I wouldn't have normally ordered for myself. Ugh! Yesterday, I ordered the pour over and waited 15 minutes for my drink. Apparently, the baristas didn't know how to make it so they pulled a guy from the back. When I say this guy had the WORST attitude, I truly mean it. He makes my drink and pours it into a mug for here... I'm the only person standing waiting for something and he completely ignores me and yells out the order. I look at him and say "To go, please, I'm sorry." and he goes "Oh. You want it to go?" while rolling his eyes at me. "Yes please. And I also paid for half and half (which I think is kind of ridiculous considering cream is available at most coffee places)".... he again goes "Oh. And you want half and half?" He was near mocking me. I was so mortified and frustrated. I just took the drink and left. I don't think I'll ever be back. Black Diesel can fix their stained couches that are falling apart & their baristas' serious attitude problems. read more

Intetesting gem in Ann Arbor. While the interior is set up for social distancing, it still feels comfortable. The outside seating is nice but some of the tables are wobbly. We ordered 2 pour overs. Unfortunately they do not offer French Press. The Guatemalan was very smooth and flavorful. The No Caff Joe was ok. We got some samples to try at home. It may improve as a French Press. The cinnamon roll was great. My wife and I split on the rating. I felt it deserved a bit higher and she a bit lower. For this rating, I agreed to a 4 star with the agreement we would revisit it later. Overall we will come back if we are in the area. read more

Visited on a Sunday morning for coffee with friends. An ok experience with a tad bit longer line (waiting outside for social distance), limited pastry selection, great smelling whole bean coffee for purchase but no prices on anything. The only pastry options were croissant or chocolate croissant. Asked for the last chocolate croissant and had it and a cappuccino on the outdoor seating area. The outdoor seating is of a reasonable size with hefty and sturdy sized coverings. With a name like Black Diesel... we just had to visit. This is a coffee shop that I'll visit again with hopes of having quicker service and more of a breakfast selection to be able to issue a five star rating. read more

I completely disagree with any of the bad ratings about the baristas. I've been here dozens of times and none of the workers have ever had a bad attitude towards anybody in the shop. The espresso alone has a deliciously strong taste. They make new drinks for every season, so the menu is very diverse. If you're not a regular they will most likely have a new drink every time you come in. It's a great place to work on any type of work. The space is comfortable and never overwhelming. Its a great environment to work, or just sit and drink coffee. read more

If you need gas for your body then this place can definitely help. Ordered a Latte and Chocolate Croissant which costed me $8. Latte is pretty good but the croissant needs to be specially mentioned coz it's so fresh and one of the best I ever had. Decent coffee in a cute space, but not-so-great location for it. Black Diesel coffee is the third coffee place to inhabit the space. Its predecessors (Caribou Coffee and Peet's) didn't make the cut and had to close. So far, this place seems to be thriving. It's located on the corner of Stadium and Packard in a tiny strip plaza, which wouldn't seem like a bad location except it's so hella busy there that getting in an out of their parking is atrocious and next to impossible when it's rush hour traffic. The parking lot is very awkward and only one way, which MANY people don't seem to understand, so there are always little jams in the their tiny lot. Aside from location, the coffee is good. I went here over the weekend (rode my bike here since it's not far from my house) and was pleasantly surprised at how they changed in the interior. Definitely has an industrial style similar to something you'd find in San Francisco or a bigger city. The best part is they can make pretty much anything you ask for - and even have a sign stating so. They also have an entire case of Iorio's gelato, which is awesome since it prevents a person having to go all the way downtown to get gelato at their main store. I ordered a cortado and a piccolo gelato and both were delicious. The cortado was a little more bitter than other places I've had it, but nothing to complain about it. Still a nice strong flavor and it was hot, which is what really mattered in the end! Price seemed comparable to other coffee places in town as well, so that was good. Overall it's a great space with plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. I could see folks wanting to work from home here or meet here for a cup of coffee on the weekends! read more

For starters, I appreciate that during the week of finals they had 24/7 hours (not that I'm a student, but I can see how awesome that it is!). I'm not really a coffee drinker. I have the occasional latte where I then commence to run around the office, and today I decided was going to be one of those days, and that it needed to be from Black Diesel. You see, I've been hearing a lot about this "cafe noel" and I needed to try it for myself. Truth be told, all lattes pretty much taste the same to me: good. It had a cute holiday holly foam/cinnamon art, which I adored. I also got this bostock, which is a breakfast brioche with almonds, orange simple syrup glaze, and orange franzipan (which all sounds fancy pants). It was from Zingerman's so of course it was the best thing I've ever had and never heard of. I liked the choices of comfy chairs, and if it wasn't raining (and winter) outside seating. This was my first visit to Black Diesel. The place is decent, and the coffee is average. I tried their Nutella latte, which is basically hazelnut flavored latte. It was just okay, not something I would have again. Not a fan of the location either! It's out of downtown, so there isn't much within walking distance. So if you go to Black Diesel, you are pretty much there is for it. I like the large windows which bring a lot of light in, but your view is basically the main road. Again, not much around, aside from residential houses. There are a lot of other coffee shops in downtown Ann Arbor that I would recommend. read more

The only drawback is that they don't have the biggest selection of food. I got a honey turkey and swiss wrap from the fridge area, and the staff offered to toast it and put it on a plate. The taste was fine, but when it came out, it was still a little cold in the center. So, just tell them you want it extra hot if you're planning to get the same done to your wrap. read more
