My family and I enjoy a visit to the antiques shops on Broadway and always complete the day by eating at Beard & Belly. This Valentines Day was one of our outings. We were a little late getting there and many tables were already filled by people with advance reservations, but we were escorted in and seated in a very friendly manner. We were instantly greeted by the exceptional server Firas, who made our visit pleasant, non-rushed, accommodated some substitution requests and gave us another great experience, all while rushing to serve his other many guests. The food was excellent and decadently finished with pie from Honeypie, their partner in an adjoining business. What a nice experience - again. After a late night in Rogers Park, we trekked down Broadway to Beard & Belly, still open for a nightcap. And we wound up having a huge meal, starting with two handmade pretzels fresh out of the oven - soft and warm, perfect with brown mustard - and an order of the spicy pickled eggs, not too spicy, with little chunks of bacon. One thing led to another and we wound up with the grilled cheese, a hearty double-decker of a sandwich, a chicken pot pie, teeming with veggies and chunks of chicken, and a little red beans & rice pie with a fresh, crisp garden salad. We walked in for brunch on Sunday morning and were able to get a table right away. We started with the honeypie biscuit and jam which was delicious and came warm. It was soft and flakey, and paired really well with the butter. For my main dish I got the huevos rancheros handpie and a side of smashed tots. The tots were seasoned well and delicious. I love that this restaurant is close to me. YMMV, but if you live anywhere in Edgewater, you need to come check this out! I always sit at the bar, and the few times I've been here have been no exception. Cos I like dishing with the friendly, cute bartenders! Plus, I prefer eating at the bar vs. a table - not sure why. I've had a lot of things here, and everything has been really tasty. Salads, burgers, appetizers dranks, lots of dranks! They have an NA Shrub cocktail that is absolutely tangy and delicious, but I question why it's $11 and has no booze in it. It's really tasty, but I'm questioning every place that sells NA cocktails for the same price as boozy drinks. Seems they should be a little lower price point. Still delicious, though!! The pickled egg appetizer is a FAVORITE. The burgers and sandwiches are all great, well made, juicy and delicious. Get that Honey Pie pie for dessert! Too full? Take a slice home, you HAVE to! I've been wanting to try B&B for a while and finally made it happen tonight. The restaurant has a really cool vibe. We were seated quickly in the patio area which was nice with ample space. The service was great and it seemed that everyone was helping each other rather than just our server. I like when restaurants work more as a team than as individuals. On to the food. We started with the house-made chips with onion dip. The chips were delicious with a hint on spice in the seasoning. The onion dip was great with a little sweetness that paired well with the spice on the chips. My wife is a pastrami snob and said her pastrami Reuben was awesome. It was enough pastrami that she couldn't finish the whole sandwich. I got the Alabama fried chicken sandwich with short rib poutine. The sandwich was good not great. The chicken itself could've used a little more seasoning and the Alabama white sauce need a little more zing to it. The poutine was great but so rich. Came here last weekend on a whim to hit up this place and eat there since last time I was here was take out. I love the overall concept of a bar/restaurant with cool, hip decor of woods, metals and exposed ductwork. As presented, it's great but some minor improvements can make this place dope! So you enter on one side to where you pick up carry outs and where the pies are stored instead of the entrance north of the joint. We started off with their SHORT RIB POUTINE, which was French fries, cheese curds, Short Ribs, smothered in 3-day gravy, white cheddar cheese sauce, and fresh herbs. Wow! Simply amazing and awesome! Those herbs make a huge difference. Then for the main event I chose their BELLY'S BURGER. It was a 5oz patty of our specialty beef blend, with Butterkäse(it's fancy cheese), roasted serrano, pickles, onion jam, & awesome sauce. Awesome it was! Mo did their "The Burger" and that was amazing as well! We ordered some pies to go and man o mighty that was a damn good pie. We one slice of Coconut Cream and a Cherry Pie. Both slices were a hearty size and just a great touch on a nice dinner. Parking can be found but you may have to drive around a bit. We are never disappointed by Beard and Belly! There are so few great restaurants in Edgewater and we hope that Beard and Belly continues to stay around because it is top tier. It is attached to Honeypie bake shop which is also amazing. We've been here for dinner and for brunch and have never had a bad meal. Some of our favorite items are their chicken handpies, breakfast and dinner poutines, and biscuits and gravy. You get extremely large portions of everything, staff is so friendly, and you have really appealing seating options. Their outdoor patio has a covered ceiling and although it's close to the Granville red line, it manages to be quiet a peaceful outdoor space. I used to really love this spot and would go every month or every other for brunch. I'd get the hand pies, usually mac and cheese and chicken pot pie. Each was $10. This was during the years of highest inflation. But they recently changed their menu, removing the mac and cheese hand pie - and raising the price from $10 for one hand pie to $18 for one hand pie with a side of fries. I was astounded when I saw the price and asked the waiter if that was for two; nope, one with a "little side" of fries. There is no way that a side of fries is worth an $8. Beard & Belly is delicious and everything that I expected. If you're looking for a good burger paired with homemade chips and a bun. My husband and I were on the hunt for a burger spot not too far from our home. I came across Beard & Belly and instantly knew we needed to check it out. When you first arrive you have to go through the bakery next door to be seated. We spoke to the employee at the bakery cash register and she happily sat us. Beard & Bakery is spacious. They have ample sitting for mixed groups I.e. solo, two, or more. They have a full bar so you can choose from the menu, I highly recommend the Raspberry Moscow Mule, or another drink. The drink prices weren't astronomical in comparison to more popular places in the city. My drink was in a sizable glass and $10. I can easily see myself ordering the Raspberry Moscow Mule every time I visit the area. They have a paired down menu so you won't get lost in it. They of course have a handful of burgers but they offer other items for people that aren't burger fans. I ended up ordering "the Burger" which is two patty's paired with fancy cheese and chips or fries. I got fries with my burger and my husband got the chips so I got to try both options. Normally I am not a fan of homemade chips, they typically are dry, but these were fresh and tasty. We topped our meal with a slice of pie. I ordered the cookies and cream pie while my husband ordered a chocolate mint pie. I thought I'd like the cookies and cream pie more but I ended up trading for the chocolate mint pie. The mint in the pie was very subtle and the chocolate cream was delicious. I highly recommend checking out Beard & Belly. The restaurant was almost empty, yet the bartender checked on us a total of four times. Our order was the chicken pot pie hand pie, sausage pancakes, breakfast casserole, and the chicken and waffles. Everything was overcooked (save for the casserole) and under-seasoned (including the casserole). When we voiced that, the manager came over and said they would "discount that item." When the check came, they had taken $10 off of the chicken and waffles, which was $20. I don't mind spending the money on the food, but discounting something that we took one bite of seems like more of an insult, instead of comping it. Honestly, 2/5 stars. My wife and I are from Los Angeles visiting Loyola University for my daughter. We looked for a good restaurant within walking distance from our hotel, and Beard and Belly looked appealing. Looking at the menu the short rib poutine jumped out at us, so we ordered that and the Cobb salad to split. I also ordered a pint of Helles Lager, and my wife a glass of white wine. I swear that short rib poutine was the best tasting comfort food I can remember tasting-my wife thought so too. Their version of Cobb salad, which was really good, was a good choice to go with the poutine. Here is another one of those great finds on Yelp that I have passed a million times doing 45 mile/hr on Broadway and never seen it. By chance I was looking for a new place for take out and came across this joint. The Queen and I had just gotten our hair done at Tricoci University of Beauty Culture and this place was on the way home, so I placed an online order for pick up. For starters we got the Deep fried pickles and baked pretzels. I didn't try the pretzels, but the fried pickles were delish. Just the right amount of salt and grease for me. Seasoning on the pickles was nice and light, not too heavy. For dinner, I got the Poutinewich Pull-apart (poutine with onion jam and mixed greens in sandwich form) with a side of short rib poutine (French fries, cheese curds, Short Rib ragout (braised short ribs and gravy), white cheddar cheese sauce, and fresh herbs). I am going to say it was a total mistake to order this sandwich with a side of short rib poutine.....double indemnity. It was delicious but too much. You can definitely have too much of a good thing. The poutine sliders were very interesting and I loved that menu said you had the option of pulling the sandwich apart to eat as sliders or as a whole sandwich. Liars! No way you eat this as a whole sandwich. It was rich, gooey and delish, but man no way you can eat the whole thing. Getting it with the fries just added to a whole of food coma opportunities. The Queen got the Pastrami Rueben (pastrami, house made Kraut, spicy remoulade, and swiss cheese, served on buttered and toasted marble rye) and The Doctor got The Burger (two 4 oz. patties with Butterkäse cheese, pickles, on a potato bun). Both said that their sandwiches were great. The Doctor said that the burger was quite good and juicy. Queen got chips with hers, The Doctor fries. The chips definitely travel better than the fries, but both were solid. We, and when I say we I mean me, finished off the meal with slices of cherry pie. I am not a fan of pies with crust as a rule and that still holds true. But the filling in this pie was amazing. The outer crust was too hard for me, but again I am not a pie crust person. I will say the crust made a great vessel for holding that filling. I would definitely go back and get that pie again. The take out menu boasts a pretty well stocked selection of beers, wines and cocktails to go as well, which is pretty impressive when you want something to drink but don't want to get out your pajamas to do so. The other nice thing was the great selection of sides offered with the burgers and sandwiches, ranging from chips to the short rib poutine. We were out and about, got hungry, then had trouble finding a place to eat with it being Valentine's Day weekend. Thankfully by this point Beard & Belly had an opening for us first timers. Parking is cheap and right out front on the street. Yes! All interactions with staff were very friendly and warm. We came through Honeypie (sister restaurant) and I drooled a little over all the pies. Getting some next time! I felt safe here as the menu is via QR code and all utensils and cups are recyclable / one use. I can tell they're trying their best to keep everyone safe. Even with paying the check and ordering, it's as minimal contact as possible. I opted for the Chili Mac - Mac & cheese + chili. Lemme tell ya, it has a kick, but all the more reason to enjoy a good beer or cocktail with it. I got the small and still only ate half (yay leftovers!). So unless you're running a race soon, you probably won't need the full size portion. Boyfriend got The Burger (I think that's right) and he said it tasted like a good diner-style burger. I was impressed by the house made chips! Get the garlic aioli and the spicy remoulade. Both are tasty for dipping! *Delivery tip: heard the chips travel much better than fries, so keep that in mind.* I'm looking forward to my next trip here to try more off the menu and to check out the outdoor patio (in warmer temps). I have been here a few times and the food is always spectacular! I will say that I did take a break as the service was not measuring up to the how wonderful the menu is. BUT, I was here last Saturday and Pat took care of us. Honestly the best service I have had in this area and frankly in Chicago. They have the heat lamps and they safely have their outdoor area covered. We ordered the fried pickles, meat sticks, pretzels, and poutine to share. All of them were so amazing. We had the hot toddies as well and they were perfect for a cold night. They have a long list of hot alcoholic drinks and so much good comfort food. Last but not least, do NOT forget about the pie! The burger and pies were't too great. One of our orders wasn't put in so we did end up having to wait what felt like an extra 20-25 minutes, she said sorry, but this is a business you're running here. The environment at Beard & Belly was very similar to something you'd find in a speakeasy. Candlelit behind the bar and a few seats. They have an elevated area and outside seating. The service was a bit rushed compared to the amount of people in the restaurant. However, the cheese fries with cheese curds were a big hit! The burgers were on par and I thought the onion jam was a great addition. Homemade ranch can differ depending on the cup, some has more dill than others.
