I have been aching for a beard Papa since I moved away from LA and was glad that there's at least one in the state of Washington. If you haven't had it, these are basically cream puffs with a sweet, light creamy filling. It's been awhile since I got to try it and I've been craving it. I feel for that girl who was attending the store because we requested three different flavors of pastry cream and for each one, she had to bend down and pull the appropriate cream press out of a refrigerator near her legs. My bad girl. It was good, but I think they changed the cream recipe because it didn't taste right. It wasn't the same craveable version I'm used to, but I'm not complaining because it was still good. My friends and I were not far from Lynnwood when one of them said they were craving cream puffs. Off we went to Beard Papa's! I had always heard rave reviews about Beard Papa's but this was my first time going to one of their locations. Their small storefront is inside of the food court area of HMart. Although they are famous for cream puffs, they also offer ice cream and boba tea, so it's a perfect spot to fulfill your sweet tooth. In addition to the original cream puff shell, you can select the Chocolate Eclair or Paris Brest style. As a first-timer, I just got the original shell with their vanilla filling. They also had green tea and chocolate cream options which sounded delicious too. In hindsight, I should have ordered more than one! The standard size cream puff is $4.25 each, but you can get a pack of six that would equate to a lower price per piece. They have mini versions as well if you prefer them to be bite-sized. The employees fill each cream puff by hand and they are made to order. Since the cream is not sitting in the shell for a prolonged period of time, the pastry remains light and airy with crispy edges. It was packed with filling which oozed out when I cut it in half. I liked how it wasn't too sweet, but the flavor of the cream was fairly subtle and not a strong vanilla. It was tasty, but I can't say I was blown away. Next time, I would probably give the green tea one a try. There were just a couple employees behind the counter moving nonstop as they seemed to face a never-ending line. Between scooping ice cream, crafting drinks and filling the cream puffs, they had their hands full, but were still friendly and tended to customers as best as they could. One of the ladies put care into filling my cream puff, then sprinkling it with powdered sugar and gently packing it in one of their cute bags. Overall, I'm glad I finally had the chance to try Beard Papa's. While I wouldn't drive out of my way to come here, if I was a regular shopper at this HMart, I could see myself grabbing a cream puff on the way out. 3.75 stars. read more

Previously I thought it was okay but not having had it in a long time, I wanted to try some again after a (disappointing) lunch in the food court next door. I got a basic puff filled with green tea ice cream. The ice cream vendor they use is Glacier brband, a common distributor in this area. I do like Glacier but their green tea flavor of ice cream is very bland. The cream puff I got was ok. It was dry and reminded me of a typical ice cream wafer cone. I probably should have stuck with the strawberry cheesecake ice cream which was tastier. Or gone with their classic cream filled puffs, and probably should let it sit for a bit before eating so the filling can blend with the cream puff shell. I thought it was odd this business manages to stay open until I actually had tried Beard Papa for the first time. It is simple and delicious! The pastries are flaky on the outside dusted with powder sugar and filled with a custard on the inside. You have a few different options with flavors of custard and type of pastry, but varies greatly on availability depending on how busy or not it was that day. If you get there near closing, your options are most likely going to be super limited. The service can a hit or a miss with who's there, and the store interior isn't that great. At least, you have a place away from that food court though. I would say if you're looking for a sweet treat that it's probably not worth going out of your way to get since it's inside the Hmart food court area. I like Beard Papa, but this location is kind of an odd location. It makes more sense that it would be at Alderwood Mall, but probably not because of the higher rent. Still I find it odd because the H Mart food court does not really seem like the place to enjoy cream puffs. It just does not work in regards to ambiance. That is not to say the cream puffs are not good. Got a green tea cream puff ($2.15) and a vanilla cookie cream puff ($2.40). Liked the vanilla puff better as it was frothy. The green tea puff seemed to lack flavor. Both puffs were served after it had cooled down so they were not at its best. The puffs taste much better when they are hot. Haven't tried the I-District Beard Papa, but I suspect that it would be better to go there due to the greater foot traffic and better location. And as a result, we've been coming here quite frequently. I always get the Eclair ($2.65) and my husband gets the cookie (also $2.65) or the original. Great cream puffs. One of the two top cream puffs/eclair I like in Washington. The only note that I have is that depending on the time you buy, if you come early, the filling might be colder. As the day progresses, I believe the cream filler machine will be stored at room temperature for quick turn around, thus the filling will not be as cold as that of the morning. Overall, Beard Papa in the U.S. has a serious quality control issue. I assume they can't really monitor all the stores since their main brunch is in Japan. When I stopped by about 2 weeks ago, their cream puffs were something completely different from the original. For some reason the top of their puff was slightly burnt, and it was irregularly formed.
