Needs more sauce and I don't think there is any egg mixed in, I've tried quite a few pad Thai from different places but this one doesn't taste like pad Thai at all, the staff is friendly and the inside of the restaurant seems nice enough but they need a new recipe, probably won't try again. read more

Awful. Ordered spring rolls. Uncooked, gummy, all flavorless cabbage inside, exactly ONE piece of chicken. The sauce they came with was tasty, but the rolls were pathetic and gross. Ordered the "spicy curry chicken" and it too was awful. This is not "a curry" its chicken and veg with an overwhelming amount of yellow curry powder. Not spicy at all just over seasoned. Like many in this community would agree, Bea's is a cornerstone of great, fresh food that is a departure from the fast food and schlocky pub fare that runs rampant through this area. The spicy chicken soup that may or may not be on the menu as a regular choice has healing properties... it's THAT good! The spicy crab Rangoon is so delicious I could eat them until I slip into a Rangoon coma. The noodle dishes are fabulous, everyone of them. I tried the spicy curry chicken ( extra spicy) and I nearly wept openly. It was so fresh and delicious and the spices in the curry were absolutely memorable. During the COVID, you pull up close to the building and call to say you're there to pick up your order and they will run it out to you. Very covid savvy. Thank you Bea and crew for feeding us!! This is a little place across the side street by the Jewel. It might have been someone's house once, and the signage is not great (right now there isn't one you can see from Sycamore). We had dinner here; the veggie egg roll was pretty tasty and a good value. We also had the vegetable potstickers; the owner reassured us when we order them that the filling is indeed tofu, not meat. They come topped with bits of green onion and slices of roasted garlic with a fairly tasty sauce on a bed of shredded cabbage. We're vegetarian and the owner was very helpful, pointing out all the vegetarian items on the menu and letting us know the eggrolls are sealed with egg. She also checked that we were OK ordering spicy dishes (we were fine, and they weren't that spicy, at least if you're used to eating Thai). My spouse's spicy tofu wasn't very spicy, so we were glad he didn't get the regular tofu/mixed vegetables. It came with baked tofu and rice; it was a little dry and the vegetables were underdone. It arrived covered in red powder and we were worried, but apparently it wasn't red pepper (not sure what it was). I had a tofu salad, which was on the menu board and pretty good: savory baked tofu, greens, fried noodles, chopped Thai peppers, cilantro, and a lemony sauce. Tofu at this place apparently means baked or fried, which is nice; gives it a good texture and is an opportunity to add some flavor. The tea was pretty good and wasn't Lipton. Beverage options are tea, lemonade or canned soda. Nice change of pace if you're in the mood for Asian and don't want to go out and get Thai. Particularly nice if you're a vegetarian and tired of the same lo mein - mixed vegetables - fried rice treadmill. Open Monday through Sat from 10 or 11 until 8. Closed Sunday. read more

Gotta love Bea's! I've never had anything I didn't like. This is one of those restaurants where you don't have to have "the usual" dish. From the spicy chicken curry to the pork sandwiches, it's all delicious. Bea is always there and the service is always good. The dinning room is small but warm and inviting. I was disappointed eating here after seeing the high ratings it got. Perhaps being Chinese or eating at a lot of Vietnamese/Asian restraunts has set my bar too high. I really did like the appetizers I got, the crab Rangoon were large and didn't skimp on the filling. The potstickers were good too but more deep fried than I expected. The real disappointment was the Pad Thai I got. The noodles were not stir fried and just tasted like soy sauce and chili paste. And then topped with stir fried vegetables which I wish were cut a little smaller. Maybe I went on an off day or ordered the wrong thing but I left pretty unsatisfied. read more

I'm in town from L.A. and staying with the in-laws. Everyone has the flu for Christmas. I went on the hunt for Pho and potstickers. Lo and behold, serendipity granted me Bea. It feels like a kitchen in a home. She is affable, quirky, and gracious. I ordered Beef meatball Pho, chicken dumplings, pork potstickers, and an eggroll. Whilst I waited, she popped a homemade crab Rangoon in the fryer. She ladled some sweet sauce on it and fed me gratis. After I got home, I was so happy to find home cooked Vietnamese food in Sycamore of all places. Her food was a shining star in the middle of the country and well worth a try. Ok I know today was the 30th anniversary. So it taking a long time was fine. Ut then the messed up the order and forgot the sauce. I call and head back. About 45 min after first picking up the food. Tsk, tsk, tsk... this is *not* what good Vietnamese food tastes like. I've been to Bea's twice in the past year and have had very similar disappointing experiences. My girlfriend and I arrived at Bea's (which looks like a glorified trailer) and stood around for a good four minutes wondering if anyone would actually expend any effort to find us a seat. We were sat at a ridiculously long table (there were only two of us) that was so stained from the previous patrons that it looked like a Hoisin sauce bomb went off. Of course, no effort was made to actually clean the table, so I just cleaned it with my water and napkin...which we got five minutes after being seated. We ordered spring rolls and Vietnamese chicken wings for appetizers. It has always been my experience that spring rolls are a pretty safe bet in Asian restaurants: shrimp, fresh veggies, rice paper--what could go wrong? Well, I certainly was surprised when I bit into the spring roll and tasted dried, possibly wilted, veggies and bad shrimp. Even the rice paper was bad-- the push-back from biting into it reminded me of chewing on a rubber ball as a kid. As a coping strategy, my girlfriend used copious amounts of Hoisin sauce to mask the unpleasant flavor. To add insult to injury, Bea herself walked past our table and exclaimed "Dat not how you eat dat!" I felt like saying "Dat not how you *make* dat," but I resisted. The chicken wings were equally pathetic. The amount of meat on the bones was similar to the table scraps a dog might enjoy at the end of a meal. I was truly amazed at how little meat there was! What meat *was* on the bone was completely dried out from over-cooking. For the entree, we ordered the soup special (they offer it on Wednesdays) and fried rice. I thought that the "soup" was going to be pho, but I'm not convinced that it was anything but watered-down Campbell's chicken soup without the chicken. Truly, it was so bland that it resists description. The fried rice was also bland and incorrectly cooked. I wasn't expecting much from a Vietnamese restaurant in DeKalb but I'm still disappointed. My girlfriend and I did gain a great catch-phrase from Bea, though: we routinely tell each other "Dat not how you eat dat!" if one thinks that the other is being difficult. You know that phrase "don't judge a book by its cover"? It's the perfect phrase for this place. I do not live in DeKalb and don't pass through that often, but have found Bea's to be a must stop when I am passing through. Last three times, I have had to stop to pick up one of their sandwiches. I have tried both the pork and beef sandwiches and both are some of the best sandwiches I have had. Ever! I believe they are normally called Bahn Mi's. Don't really care what Bea wants to call it though, I am stopping for them again and again and again! I have also tried the fried rice, and the crab rangoon, both of which were top notch. Service was great, and the restaurant has a diner feel to it on the inside. You seriously need to stop here and try Bea's out! read more

I have lived 2 miles from Bea's Wok for 9 years. I've passed by it a million times and finally decided to venture from the usual hot spots and try it. Now I'm kicking myself that it took me 9 years to do so! I have kids that are picky eaters and they practically licked their plates clean. My husband and I ordered food expecting the usual skimpy portions from other restaurants in town and we had we had enough food to feed 20 people (not kidding.) We had left overs for the next day! The food was/is excellent -- beautiful, colorful and perfectly cooked veggies, flavorful chicken and pork, INCREDIBLE egg rolls and my kids went crazy for the chicken dumplings and crab rangoons. Food is fresh as in made right when order not standing around in around for hours and slopped on a plate. You'll taste the difference I promise you! Today was my first time here in the 22 years I have lived in Dekalb. I came with my sister, which was her first time as well. We got the crab rangoon to start off with and the first bite it was nice and hot and so delicious! For our meal we split the chicken and beef combo with fried rice and broccoli and pea pods. I have had several people tell me how great this place is, so I was excited to test out what I hoped to be my favorite new local establishment. I was not impressed. Inside was what I expected: a typical greasy fast food restaurant atmosphere where you can eat in or take out. The food is supposed to be traditional Vietnamese. I have no point of reference for this claim, but I was generally not impressed with my order. The meal, a noodle dish, was extremely bland, with the noodles tasting more like plain spaghetti than anything remotely Asian. The crab Rangoon was greasy enough to soak into the packaging, and it had a strong oniony taste that was not to my liking. What is impressive, however, is Bea herself. She enthusiastically greeted every person who walked in there-- many by name. She seemed like the kind of person who would recognize everyone who has ever visited ( and their order). She is very friendly and helpful, and she seems willing to accommodate special orders. I would assume that she is what keeps people coming back, but it wasn't enough to get my vote. read more

..I miss this place. Look, if you don't want that same old, starchy gravy, soy-sauce tasting food, you will like Bea's. I remember eating at her original location, before she moved next to Jewel. My coworkers and I were addicted to it. What many have said is true, you don't really need to look at the menu, sometimes she will fix things up for you and they will be awesome. It is also true that many dishes aren't authentic Vietnamese, but in fact her own dishes, fantastic nonetheless. Even when I went back after 7 years, she remembered my name! Just know that whether you crave savory, sweet, spicy, tangy, crispy, flavorful, she has something for you. Veggies are always fresh and not cooked to a pulp. I love her spicy red chili sauce that she would put on your dish if you ask for spicy. There is nothing out there like Bea's. I think its time for a lil road trip. read more

Bea's Wok and Roll is one of DeKalb's hidden treasures. The first time two years ago my husband and I strolled into Bea's we weren't sure. The place smelled like bleach and there was no one else inside. It would be another six months before we set foot inside again. And boy are we glad we did!! Thru the recommendation of many of our friends we decided to give this place a chance. We ordered the spicy chicken egg roll and veggie egg roll. Both were fabulous. The best egg rolls in town if you ask me. For entrees we ordered Beef Fried Rice and the Tofu and Vegetables. Both were super flavourful. Bea knows how to work with Tofu. The texture wasn't slimy. The portions are huge so you will have enough for lunch the next day. read more

Since our favorite Pho N Grill (great food, friendly staff & good customer service) unfortunately closed their door, we had no choice but wanted to try different Vietnamese. We knew this place but never tried - so called to order some dishes. Website is now working, Yelp has limited information is so we had to rely on Facebook, but it was not still enough for us to know what is good or how we could have options so I started asking questions. Then I got really rudeness as I could tell she was not really patient, and eventually "you have to decide what you want when you call us. we are busy. We can't do what you're asking for" - then I said "ok, then we will probably try next time, thanks". Then without saying anything, she hang up the phone. Really? We wanted to support local restaurants as much as possible.. but we can't accept this type of attitude towards potential customers. Too sad to realize now we don't have any choices of Vietnamese around here anymore. read more
