Amazing Chinese food in downtown Charleston! Came here for dinner on a Friday night and the place was full. It's pretty small so it is best to make a reservation. It is really cute inside and very intimate. Our server was very helpful in letting us know portion sizes and that they suggest having everything family style. We ordered the pork dumplings to start. They were really fresh and flavorful! I loved the scallions on top as well. Then we ordered the general tso's chicken, white rice and Hong Kong noodles. The portions were huge! 3 of us ate and we were so full we have leftovers. The chicken was super tender and flavorful. It had a nice crunch and spice from the peppers. The Hong Kong noodles were amazing! I loved the sauce on them and the pork was so good! I also liked the veggies inside, except for mushrooms. Nothing was too salty either. We checked out beautiful south in downtown charleston and loved our experience! We went at 5:15 on a wednesday in january- so expectedly, there weren't very many guests there. The staff were all very personable and friendly, adding to our experience. The menu is family style, everything is meant to be shared. I would describe the menu as a unique twist on Chinese food. Authentic flavors but modernized. We loved the small plates- the crab rangoon "chip and dip" style was unique, and the dumplings were delicious. This was our 2nd dinner and stop of the night after our first dinner on St. John's Island was woefully wanting. Went here with my vegan friend who absolutely loved everything here. Just one look at our picture and you can see that not only is everything so saturated and intoxicatingly rich looking and tasting, the variety of dishes and ambiance all brought the house down. The scallion noodles were really good BUT my mom's are better. I do still appreciate the crunchiness of the fried scallions and the tanginess of the oil sauce but I wanted a slightly thinner, more slippery noodle and the inclusion of sesame seeds and fried shallots for a more well rounded flavor profile. Their general Tso's tofu dish was absolutely delicious. Their kung pao mushroom dish leaned towards the saltier side but was still incredibly appetizing. I got the Cantonese egg noodle with cha shao pork slices. The pork, while tasted and looked great, was cut way too thickly. They also could've used a bit more heat and time on the grill. The entree portions were big but the scallion noodles were tiny. Our server was personable but did get our bill mixed up with another table. Besides that, I did appreciate his recommendations and commentary. Loved this place and it ended up being our favorite restaurant in Charleston so that was high praise. read more

Overpriced "Experience," Under-seasoned Food Don't let the aesthetic fool you. We came for drinks and apps, and every single thing we ordered was a massive letdown. The pork dumplings were trash, and the ribs had absolutely zero flavor. I tried exactly one rib out of the three, realized they weren't worth a dime of my money, and asked to send them back. Instead of professional service, the server looked me dead in the face and told me they don't take things off the bill because "you're paying for an experience." I didn't realize the "experience" included paying full price for food that isn't seasoned and a rude attitude when you point it out. I am so late writing this review because I visited Charleston six months ago, but I definitely wanted to talk about one of the best restaurants. I ate it while I was there. Beautiful south is a very beautiful nice casual spot. You could easily get dressed up or be dressed down to visit and enjoy some good food. I went with some friends and we enjoyed a few appetizers like the five spice dry room, ribs and dumplings, as well as the crab Rangoon dip, which was personally one of my favorite things. The crab Rangoon dip had big pieces of crab meat in it, not that imitation crab either. As far as the food went, everything was absolutely amazing. And the portions were big. Definitely had some leftovers to enjoy at our Airbnb the next day. Prices were affordable. The staff was very nice and answered all of our questions since we were out of town and didn't really know much about the restaurant. They gave awesome suggestions and recommendations. The next time I'm in Charleston I will definitely make sure to come back and visit Beautiful South but it's delicious food. read more

We ordered a couple of things and nothing really stood out to us. - Crab rangoon dip was creamy and good, and we enjoyed it paired with the crispy wonton crackers - The shrimp toast was just okay - all you can really taste is the oil and how fried it is - The scallion oil noodles were fine, but kind of one-note and didn't have any special flavor - The mongolian beef was just okay as well, but you get tired of it pretty quickly since it's the same base flavor over and over Besides the crab rangoon dip, everything was pretty one-dimensional and lackluster. Definitely Asian fusion cuisine that may be good if you haven't had any of these dishes before, but not worth going if you've eaten decent Asian food. I got the vegan black pepper tofu. It was very good, don't get me wrong, but it was neither spicy nor flavorful. They didn't have hot sauce so I added chili oil, but the bottom part wasn't very spicy either! I also didn't like that every table who ordered after me was told there was a long wait for white rice because of a "big" table. Our reservation was at 7:15 on a Thursday, the food was excellent, pork dumplings were fresh with favorite, the shrimp human although small was great with favor. The Char Siu fried rice was great I wish they had more options for meat but the pork was really good , the black pepper steak made me want to slap someone in a nice way it was so freaking good, whomever season those veggies like that needs to come home with me! Cocktail constellation teapot punch was refreshing and sweet, the sea drinking cities was good and strong but beware of the duck fat washes it has an after taste., the service was great our waiters were on top of it and the restaurants is a beautiful vibe. We had a wonderful dinner at Beautiful South on New Year's Eve. This modern Chinese restaurant serves an upscale experience of southern Chinese cuisine, dim sum and craft cocktails. The dinner menu offers many great options suitable for sharing. We had shrimp & pork shumai, Kung Pao mushrooms, and Lap Yuk cabbage as starters. Each one delivered flavorful bites, and satisfying taste. Then our entrees were Ginger Chicken and General Tso's chicken. While the ginger chicken was good, it was well surpassed in texture and flavor by General Tso's chicken. If you want jasmine rice, order just one serving as it is plenty. Our service was good, with Chelsea taking care of us throughout our dining experience. We had been to Beautiful South earlier in 2025 and had just an ok experience. I'm surprised by the amount of hate for this place. I was quite satisfied with the food. They have chili crisp on the table to spice up anything that needs a kick. The beef dumplings were the standout. I loved the chili sauce although some might be turned off by the strong flavor of red vinegar. The dry rubbed pork ribs were excellent...the skin was very crunchy and the meat fell off the bone. The bar is beautiful and the drink menu is quite impressive. The service was a bit lacking. all were polite and friendly but it's obvious management doesn't train the staff well. They knew virtually nothing about the food. They don't work well together. My water was empty for 10 minutes and no one cared to refill me. Dirty dishes weren't cleared and we ran out of napkins. The pork dumplings were a great starter and had six dumplings in them so enough for two people. Requires $25 **per person** cancellation fee to make a reservation which is weird for this type of restaurant experience and also super difficult with baby-sitters who cancel on you (you can cancel before a specific time without penalty but it's well before the sitters cancel on you typically)... this spot had been on my radar since they opened and this cancellation policy made it so this was the first time we could finally go. This place really needs a better rating than it has. We were tourists without a car and vegan so really at a disadvantage with finding options. You could smell the food from a block away and we immediately got hungry. The place was busy on a Sunday night during a holiday weekend. We were greeted by a few of the staff and given a 15 minute wait time since we didn't have a reservation. There's a bench to sit at in the front where you have a view of the chefs hard at work and outside seating that we took advantage of. We got all of the vegan dishes, the rice noodles and the congee was so flavorful. A different server dropped our food and told us how the chef was inspired by New York and traveled to Asia to study. You could taste the education and love put into the food. It is small plates and after only eating bagels all day we demolished five plates between two of us. The tables next to us all had to go boxes so this must be us being super hungry and not really having a place or time to reheat. We got to turnip cakes and they were slightly less crispy than I'm used to, but solid. The rice cakes were the best things we had during our trip and I wish we got more than one order. Had the Chinese broccoli and the vegetable baos and they were good too. Service was truly so lovely. Everyone who dropped off food was so kind, I do wish they checked in a little more with us. Probably the greatest thing here is their happy hour. You can get a martini with two beef dumplings and it's the combination you never knew you needed. Their noodles and dumplings are some of my favorite in Charleston. The beef dumplings have slightly more flavor than the pork but both are great options if you're a dumpling fan (and I am). Highly recommend the cucumbers they are a little spicy but so good. The crab rangoons are served as more of a dip than your traditional Rangoon but it comes full of crab ... and zero complaints here. The environment is sexy. It's dark inside and a great place for a date night. Their happy hour is Tuesday - Saturday (yes it happens on Saturday!) from 4-6 but you can't order off the full menu until 5pm so plan accordingly. read more

The smells as you walk down the street are amazing. The restaurant has a cool look, upscale mixed with casual. I'd say it was very dark, a little too dark for my liking. The waitress was great, super helpful at explaining the menu and all the different options and what best to order. The pork belly was sweet and I would have preferred it crispy. All the vegetables were amazing. The pepper beef was great, although I'd have prefer more beef and less veggies. The crab Rangoon dip is a nice twist, it uses real crab so don't expect your typical taste. The wonton chips were so crunchy they burst into a million crumbs as you use them. Not to mention covered in oil so it was kind of a pain to eat. Even though it tasted great I found myself wishing it wasn't so messy. I don't know why they couldn't just make them like regular crab rangoons. That filling would be amazing. This seems like a cool place and I think with time could be a really awesome spot for dates or a nice dinner with friends. I came here for a date and we ordered the Shanghai Style Cucumbers, Black Pepper Steak, and Spicy Hong Kong Noodles. Loved the cucumbers! A fan favorite for good reason. The black pepper steak was delicious as well - good chunks of meat for sure. The noodles were good but definitely not spicy whatsoever (I'd say the cucumbers had more spice than the noodles, maybe they forgot to add it??) My date is not a spicy food guy and found the cucumbers to have a nice heat and didn't think the noodles did. Still very good but I was expecting spicy noodles. I liked the vibe online. I ordered uber eats to bring it as I am from out of town and was in on business. I'm giving it 2 stars only because it showed up hot and because the Generals was actually spicy and had the dried peppers in it. That's how it used to be made but it should still be a little sweet. Mine was just hot, not generals at all. I was a little shocked not to get rice or an egg roll with a $23 order of generals but whatever. I could let that pass if the chicken was good, but it was just hot, nothing else. I always order crab rangoon with my generals and was even more disappointed in it. I don't understand the concept of making it this way. It was not very good. I'm not blaming the restaurant for this but about a half hour after eating my stomach began to burn. Not sure why as i eat spicy food all the time but it burned all night long. I had a full roll of antacid overnight and nothing relieved it for about 8 hours. Again not blaming them for this but after purping those less than pleasant flavors up all night I think I'll pass next time I'm in town. read more
