We wanted to share everything which is recommended by the staff. It was hard for us to put a meal together. My favorite of the dinner were the bao with pork. We also got the OKONOMIYAKI Japanese pancake, and I expected a pancake with veggies. Instead, we got a pile of cabbage shaped like a giant pancake with stuff on top. It was okay. For our third dish we got the mAPO Dou fu that had excellent tofu in it. We wished there was more tofu and less pork in that dish. I was hoping to be wowed by this very casual restaurant. I wasn't. If in the area again, I would eat somewhere else. There are a few parking spaces out front, and we were lucky to snag one. read more

This was our first stop during our weekend trip to Charleston. Xiao Bao is a Michelin recommended restaurant that's packed with Asian fusion flavor. The place itself is on the smaller side. Parking can be tough, but we lucked out with one of their spots. There's outdoor seating and tables and chatting indoors. I don't see this place accommodating large parties unless you time it correctly. We arrived around 1pm on a Friday afternoon and there were two other small groups. The pad kra pow was delicious! So many yummy flavors in one bowl. The dumplings were really good too, although I do wish they were bigger. The flavors reminded me of Food Terminal in Atlanta. I will say the first set of utensils I got were dirty, and the first order of dumplings had a hair in it - so that put me off for a bit. The waitstaff was very kind and resolved the issue. Place is going downhill, especially their takeout. Portions suck unless you're an anorexic! What did I pay over $100 for? Burnt, hardened fried chicken and a side of rice that couldn't feed an infant. As a longtime resident of Charleston, I give this place the middle finger. I'll usually order all the share items and some entrees when with like 4 friends. Friendly and helpful service. Some items can get spicy and they can check if you are cool with that. Most of the seating is outdoors, but covered. So great for nice weather. Although there is seating inside with a bar. Just a laid-back atmosphere that you can't go wrong with for asian cuisine. One of our first stops in Charleston. Visited upon a friend recommendation. It was honestly so good. We showed up at 11 when they opened and it was super easy to get in and get our food. We had the Okonomiyaki with pork candy and an egg and the Som Tum w Chicken. I know they are famous for the Okonomiyaki and it was super good but I personally liked the Som Tum better. Been excited to try this place for some time now and so happy we did. The menu is small and it showed the GF options which were helpful since my hubby has Celiac. It was also specific on the bottom that they don't modify dishes which I can appreciate. We sat outdoor although they had a nice and spacious indoor seating and bar seats. Our server wasn't the most personable and friendly, but she gave us a breakdown of their dishes. I asked her for a coke with my food and never got it so I didn't even mention it because we didn't see her after our entrees dropped. Now to the food! Pork+kimchi dumplings 4/5 - dumplings and texture were great, the sauce was good but TOO much ginger and that's all you could really taste with a touch of soy. If they toned it down I would've thought it was more pleasant. Pad Kra 5/5 - it was so flavorful and all the textures were amazing, especially with the fried egg on top. Delicious! Som Tum Salad 5/5 - another delicious dish. The flavors were on point, tangy, spicy, sweet and crunchy. You could taste the fish sauce which I love! I wish I could give this place more stars! Don't the outside look fool you...it is in an old gas station and looks a little run down from the outside. The windows are darkened so it is hard to tell if it is open or not. There was a sandwich board outside that clued us in that it was open. I wish I knew what it was called so I can order the sauce again, it was so good. I may have to call them to ask what the sauce is called. The braised brisket noodles had so much flavor...so many herbs, the beef melted in your mouth it was so tender, and the noodles were perfectly soft yet a little tiny bit chewy in a perfect way. The papaya salad was named "kickass papaya salad" on the menu, and it is true to its name...spicy, crunchy, tangy, sweet, salty, savory deliciousness! Every bite was a delight, we scrapped the plates clean. I think we all agreed that the Okonomiyaki was a clear favorite, with bursts of unique yet perfectly balanced flavor. This place came highly recommended from a friend so it was our first stop on our trip to Charleston. It has a really cool, hip vibe. The menu is focused but offered a good variety. Our server was friendly and answered our many questions about the menu. We ordered the gong bao stir fry, bao buns, dumplings, and a "happy meal" that was off menu but offered for kids (nice touch!) The bao buns came out first and were some of the best I've ever had! The pork belly was perfectly cooked and the pear balanced out the flavor nicely. The gong bao stir fry was good but I was expecting there to be a bit more spice, it needed a sharper note to cut through the sweetness. The dumplings were good - spicy! - and I enjoyed the black vinegar flavor but my 9 year old dumpling lover did not. She did really love her happy meal though and ate every bite. A tiny gripe because it wasn't a substantial difference but I was charged a different price for my beer than was listed on the menu. The pad kra pow was actually very good and our favorite dish there. Great flavors and crunchy veggies with fluffy rice and an egg. The mapo doufu was just fine, nothing special to write about. The ceviche was good, but it was mostly avocado and cucumber, not much fish. The coconut curry was very sweet - I really was not a fan, although my friends finished it up. Besides the pad kra pow, the food we tried wasn't that great, but I would still be willing to give their other dishes a try. This is a hip little joint that is fusing some interesting things. My opinion only: fusing Mexican with Indian with various Asian foods in one small restaurant may be the problem. We had a cauliflower starter that was along the style of Indian cuisine. The flavor was tasty with a tasty yogurt, but I felt it was over-salted. The bao was mediocre at best. Unimpressive for a place that has Bao in its name. We ordered the crispy pork belly in a tingly sauce, which I assume was a Szechuan pepper sauce of some sort. The Oko Japanese cabbage pancake was greasy and I wasn't a fan of the mayo smeared on it. I also ordered a ginger beer which is house made. I appreciated that it wasn't overly sweet, but it also lacked the bite one looks for in a ginger beer. Something was so garlicky that I still tasted it in my mouth the next morning. Food is amazing. We went here for carry out. We met some friends who were eating there. They weee at outside seating that comes with these little fans that amazingly work to keep you cool. This place is Asian. They have Korean, Japanese, Indian, and on and on. It is a unique blend of foods all of which (that we had) will knock your socks off! The fish curry is superb! In their defence, we did go there about 45 min before it was scheduled to close, but the server was very displeased that we even came in and she provided pretty poor service. Had to flag servers down for water and drink refills. My review is actually based on 2 of the 4 dishes we ordered today. I enjoyed them so much that how little I enjoyed the others won't deter me from coming back. The yu Xiang Brussels were delicious. My friend, who used to live in Japan, said it was missing ginger and a fish flavor, but also said it's made a couple of ways depending on where you live in Japan.
