(UPDATED) If I could give 2 reviews I'd give one with: 5 stars for the cut and 1 star for highlights. Zara did a fantastic job with the cut! :) But unfortunately not so well with the color. I'm in search of a hairstylist that is great at communication, listens to what you want, is good at color and cut. Not jazzed about going to one for color and another for cut, but may have to. ** Note: if you don't know what you want for color, or just want highlights to lighten up your look overall, Zara is definitely your gal. ** If you DO know what you want, and it's a more dimensional highlight, or more bold contrast, and don't want to argue with your hairstylist, or be bullied into something you don't want, do find another stylist. MY APPROACH: I always bring multiple photos to show the cut and color I want and point out the aspects that I like and dislike using the photos. This worked really well for the cut but just failed miserably in the color. STRONG PERSONALITY: Zara has a very strong personality, and is quite stubborn, I'm one to be firm in what I ask for and gave up the fight after a few rounds. I trusted her that she would do something close to what I wanted and if she had, I'd be giving a 4-5 star review. WHAT SHE WANTS not WHAT YOU WANT I've always had warmer toned highlights, and she gave me nearly grey blonde highlights with no dimension because "it'll hide the grey roots better when they grow back in" that washed out my face and made me look old. I'll give credit to Zara for happily taking a 2nd round at the color for free (2+ weeks later), but I ended up with even less highlights than I went in with for the first round of highlights. Arrrgh. This after 15 minutes of discussion and review of photos. Both times I'd asked for Balayage, but was talked out of it by her saying she couldn't do it with my hair - period. Too short was the reason the first 2 times. Her explanation the 3rd time AFTER we were done made more sense - I had too many highlights to begin with and would need a base color of brown to start with. She said it'll take a little while for the brown to fade a bit, so if it does, I'll update again. So why not say that in the first place?!? I would've happily paid more for the base color and/or come in on a separate day with no highlights to get balayage. Most stylists would have offered to do that and then the balayage at a later date to make the customer happy. Still in search. :( read more

Came to Zara for a mens cut with Nicole via Groupon. Easy location just off the 217 and Scholls, her studio is in a newer building with a big SOLA SALONS sign, unit 15 inside. The interior is a modern circular corridor filled with a bunch of private rooms and is clean with bathrooms near the back corner. There are two stations with a couch inside and chairs outside for waiting. Nicole is plenty friendly and did a nice quick and clean mens cut on me. She was also able to fit me in on the same day I called. She shampoos and conditions your hair afterwards with a hot steamed towel over the face, a nice touch. The products she uses have a nice mild scent to them. Only downside is the parking lot is small for how many businesses share it, so try to schedule during off hours if possible, otherwise you have to park in the neighboring apartments area. She has some tips about this. There are also a few disabled parking spots scattered about. I lucked out and got parking right out front at 5PM on a Friday night. Rates are market average. Would definitely recommend and return. read more

I scheduled with Zara based on all her positive reviews, as my prior hair stylist moved too far away. Zara is honest upfront about pricing, and very fair. She will also be honest about what she knows to be best for your hair...you can disagree, but she's the professional and acts like one. I came with my ideas and we worked together with her critiques to give me the best look, and color. The result was fantastic. I've had so many compliments and wake up every morning loving how my hair looks. I'm glad I found Zara and will be seeing her from now on. Zara is efficient with getting in quick foils, no doubt! But for a relaxing experience getting your hair done this may not be it. Her work space is in a beautiful space in the sola salons off Scholls ferry, but feels a bit cold and frigid with the energy in the room and the instrumental versions of "the heart must go on" playing. She seems overbooked and anxious. She kindly let me know there was a hole in a foil AFTER it was shampooed and that I would have a spot on the side of my head. She said I could come in and fix it at any point, regardless I was charged full price initially. I have a lot of hair and know it's a lot to work with , but if you knowingly mess up my hair please adjust your price accordingly. I have a toddler and getting to a salon is such a task already. I met with Zara a couple of weeks ago for toner. She fit me into her schedule, but when I arrived she disclosed what would happen if she only added toner. I had highlights that were not done correctly and had asked my previous hairstylist to darken the tones as well as add layers. My highlights were platinum blonde and no layers were ever added. Zara gave me her professional opinion on what was needed in order to achieve what I was looking for. She went above and beyond to fit me in her schedule (I work long hours and she was very flexible). Besides being extremely accommodating, she was up front about the price (which was extremely fair). I would recommend Zara to everyone I know and will be a returning client. When I arrived I was happy to find the salon consists of individual rooms which added a personal feel. They seemed modern and clean.
