Our group seemed to get a lot of looks from other customers, and at times it felt like we didn't really fit the typical crowd there. At one point a table nearby started loudly saying political phrases and making hand gestures, which made the environment feel uncomfortable. Another table even pointed toward our group and showed something on their phone to each other, which added to the awkward feeling. The restaurant itself was also very crowded with limited space between tables. At one point a child from another table kept bumping into me due to how tight everything was. Unfortunately the food didn't make up for the experience either. I ordered a burger that ended up being extremely greasy and lacking flavor to the point that I couldn't finish it. Overall it just wasn't a pleasant dining experience, and I personally wouldn't return.

Service was excellent…read more Ambiance--usual diner feel Food: Ox tails delicious--tad too spicy but I enjoyed every bite! Rice & gravy gummy with no seasoning! Cabbage was good--greens very spicy! Gave to my sister who rated 9 out of 10 would recommend. Cornbread was like hard day old bread and went into the trash! Bbq platter: BIL loved his plate! Said potato salad was meh but all else good! Hotlinks, ribs, and beans! Sister got fried chicken and added mac&cheese along with yams! Chicken was fresh but not seasoned much! Mac&cheese good for diner menu option, and yams were okay she said! Greasy spoon Mac is better IMO but Granny's oxtails the best I've had here in H-town! Although spicy/hot food is not my favorite I did enjoy them If the cornbread were softer & sweeter I think the rating would be 4! Would I go back? Hmm! Yea for the tails of course! I saw they have catfish & black eyed peas so I may try those next time as well! Overall 3.5 but can't do half stars By default I left it at 4

Everything was seasoned to perfection! The service was also professional, a huge plus. From the moment you walk in, it gives a homey feeling/atmosphere. There's plenty of seating and it's pretty spacious. They also have a huge menu, everything sounds delicious. Anytime we're in the mood for soul food or some real homestyle-like cooking - we'll be at Granny Dee's for sure!

I had not been to Goodson's in years--well over a decade at least. So when both my wife and…read moremother-in-law suggested we stop in for lunch, I didn't hesitate. We started with the Fried Green Tomatoes. They were good, but not quite enough to dethrone our longtime appetizer champion: Pecos' fried pickle chips. The prices were reasonable, so I decided to go full-bore and order the "Cowboy" Chicken Fried Steak, which was only a few dollars more than the "Cowgirl" version. Mom chose the Chicken Fried Chicken, while my wife went with the Pot Roast. When our food arrived, I was genuinely taken aback. My chicken fried steak was larger than the plate it was served on--seriously, it was that big. The side dishes were equally generous. After bringing the leftovers home, I managed to get two more meals and a sandwich out of that steak. Likewise, both of my ladies left with take-home boxes, and that NEVER happens with Mom. She typically treats these lunch outings as her main meal of the day, but even she waved the white flag. So why not a five-star review? The answer comes down to flavor. While the portions were enormous, the service was excellent, and the prices were more than fair, the seasoning seemed a little timid. Across the board, the food could have used a bit more punch and personality. Nothing was bad--it just never quite crossed into memorable territory. That said, I would absolutely recommend Goodson's, especially if you have family or friends visiting from out of state. It showcases two classic Texas traits: HUGE portions and good value. As for the mild seasoning? If your guests are from up North, they'll probably feel right at home.

The good: Prices are good for the portions. The employees are super nice and friendly. It was late in the evening and they were crowded but you couldn't tell in their attitudes. The menu is plentiful and it was hard to choose. I waited about 30 minutes for my food but it was fine. They gave me a free koolaid for waiting. It was delicious! I froze it and enjoyed it so much. The opportunity: most of the main courses lacked seasoning. The fried pork chop was fried too hard and had no seasoning, the smothered pork chop was good and tender but no seasoning, the chicken wings, same thing. The catfish was seasoned very well and fried okra too. Overall: I ordered 4 plates: smothered pork chop with yams and fried okra. The sides were good. Macaroni and cheese, rice and gravy and cabbage was good. The green beans lacked any color or flavor. We did not eat the cornbread. Also ordered Fried pork chop with 2 sides, chicken wings with 2 sides and fried fish. It was enough food for 2 people to eat from each plate. I will go back on a different day and give them another chance. It might have been an off day for them. We loved the portion sizes. Everything I got came out to 80.00, which is excellent. They were out of a lot of things and all desserts were sold out. Have to get there early to get what you want.
