Service was excellent…read more Ambiance--usual diner feel Food: Ox tails delicious--tad too spicy but I enjoyed every bite! Rice & gravy gummy with no seasoning! Cabbage was good--greens very spicy! Gave to my sister who rated 9 out of 10 would recommend. Cornbread was like hard day old bread and went into the trash! Bbq platter: BIL loved his plate! Said potato salad was meh but all else good! Hotlinks, ribs, and beans! Sister got fried chicken and added mac&cheese along with yams! Chicken was fresh but not seasoned much! Mac&cheese good for diner menu option, and yams were okay she said! Greasy spoon Mac is better IMO but Granny's oxtails the best I've had here in H-town! Although spicy/hot food is not my favorite I did enjoy them If the cornbread were softer & sweeter I think the rating would be 4! Would I go back? Hmm! Yea for the tails of course! I saw they have catfish & black eyed peas so I may try those next time as well! Overall 3.5 but can't do half stars By default I left it at 4

Everything was seasoned to perfection! The service was also professional, a huge plus. From the moment you walk in, it gives a homey feeling/atmosphere. There's plenty of seating and it's pretty spacious. They also have a huge menu, everything sounds delicious. Anytime we're in the mood for soul food or some real homestyle-like cooking - we'll be at Granny Dee's for sure!

I had not been to Goodson's in years--well over a decade at least. So when both my wife and…read moremother-in-law suggested we stop in for lunch, I didn't hesitate. We started with the Fried Green Tomatoes. They were good, but not quite enough to dethrone our longtime appetizer champion: Pecos' fried pickle chips. The prices were reasonable, so I decided to go full-bore and order the "Cowboy" Chicken Fried Steak, which was only a few dollars more than the "Cowgirl" version. Mom chose the Chicken Fried Chicken, while my wife went with the Pot Roast. When our food arrived, I was genuinely taken aback. My chicken fried steak was larger than the plate it was served on--seriously, it was that big. The side dishes were equally generous. After bringing the leftovers home, I managed to get two more meals and a sandwich out of that steak. Likewise, both of my ladies left with take-home boxes, and that NEVER happens with Mom. She typically treats these lunch outings as her main meal of the day, but even she waved the white flag. So why not a five-star review? The answer comes down to flavor. While the portions were enormous, the service was excellent, and the prices were more than fair, the seasoning seemed a little timid. Across the board, the food could have used a bit more punch and personality. Nothing was bad--it just never quite crossed into memorable territory. That said, I would absolutely recommend Goodson's, especially if you have family or friends visiting from out of state. It showcases two classic Texas traits: HUGE portions and good value. As for the mild seasoning? If your guests are from up North, they'll probably feel right at home.

Update: still good as usual. Had not tried it for a couple years but we were in the neighborhoodread more

Maaaan, let me first start by saying the food was TOO good. She's not stingy with the portions at…read moreall, everything was made with love and seasoning. I prefer my cornbread sweet but it still got ate! Fried chicken plate came with 6-7 pieces and clearly didn't make the picture. We came on a Sunday afternoon around 4 and seeing the line out the door, I already knew we'd be waiting. What I wasn't expecting was an hour in line and an hour to cook. It looked like one person handling it all, bless her heart. There are tables to sit, but chile no one was gettin up anytime soon and I understood why. Absolutely love to have found soul food up north however i'd recommend placing a pick up or you got food at home!

annie b's really surprised me!…read more i was up north visiting with family, and a family member put in the request for soul food. i immediately panicked because this isn't a part of town i am familiar with and had ZERO recommendations for this neighborhood!! after a diligent investigation between google and yelp, i landed on annie b's. my family agreed, so the pursuit of soul food began. we visited annie b's on saturday around 4:50p-5p. once we walked in, we were immediately met with a line of customers and also customers waiting around for their food. the seating arrangements are similar to that of a dining hall of a church-- very southern. they do not have a bar and do not serve alcohol. there is also a dress code, this is a family restaurant and the aunties will be judging you DOWN!! no exclusions, they just ask for respectful attire. we placed our order @ 5:24p and we received our order around 6:45p. they close @ 6p on saturdays. there is a sign inside that states "this is not fast food, so please be patient" or something like that. bring your patience, and if you are in starvation mode.. have an apple and chill tf out. because my family and i were so patient, the sweet auntie at the register, gave us all banana puddings with our plates. the food was sooo damn good. i would wait all over again. i ordered a veggie plate : cabbage, green beans, candied yams, cornbread. it was so much food, that i divided it up into two meals! my cousins also loved their food; they ordered a pork chop plate and an oxtail plate. for the day, the oxtail plate was $33. on the menu, it says mkt price. would 1000% recommend, and if i find myself in the neighborhood again.. i will be patiently waiting on my veggie plate bonné appétit c.
