This was definitely one of the more unusual restaurant experiences I've had. The atmosphere felt a bit strange and, to be honest, not very welcoming. Our group seemed to get a lot of looks from other customers, and at times it felt like we didn't really fit the typical crowd there. At one point a table nearby started loudly saying political phrases and making hand gestures, which made the environment feel uncomfortable. Another table even pointed toward our group and showed something on their phone to each other, which added to the awkward feeling. The restaurant itself was also very crowded with limited space between tables. At one point a child from another table kept bumping into me due to how tight everything was. Unfortunately the food didn't make up for the experience either. I ordered a burger that ended up being extremely greasy and lacking flavor to the point that I couldn't finish it. Mel's is a true classic and a place I've been going to for years. It's easily one of the best spots in the area for comfort food, especially fried catfish, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, and burgers. They even have their well-known burger challenge! The ambiance is definitely lively (and pretty loud). Service is always solid. Our waiter checked on us consistently and made sure everything was taken care of. For the price, it's hard to beat. The portions are huge and you will absolutely leave full. If you can, save room for dessert because their dessert selection is fantastic and the perfect way to end the meal. read more

The burgers are massive, messy, and exactly what you want when you're craving real comfort food instead of something trendy and tiny. Everything feels homemade and the portions are the kind that make you wonder if you accidentally ordered for two people. The vibe is pure Texas country café -- casual, loud, and full of locals who clearly know what they're doing when they show up hungry. Service has always been friendly, even when the place is packed (which is often). Only reason for 4 stars is the wait can get long, especially on weekends. Ooen since 1994, Mels has expanded over the years and now seats 148. Maybe we got them on an off day. They were rated one of the best burgers in Texas so I tried the cheeseburger... it was not great. They overcooked the tater tots, and the ground beef, the tomatoes on the burger were past their prime, so it was frankly below average as an experience. They do better on other dishes-- the small chicken fried steak is huge and made from good meat. The catfish also got high marks. Service was good. Order rolls, not cornbread. We split the hamburger steak and ordered an extra side for me...Black eye peas. They were the best. Hamburger steak a grilled onions were delicious. Hubs had corn and green beans. Sept 13 2025 My dad would have been 76 today. He passed 21 years ago on Sept 26th. We come out to these parts to change the flowers on his grave and then eat at Mel's because he loved it and because we all ate here after his funeral. We showed up at 8:32. They are supposed to close at nine. It's a Saturday today. I fully expected to possibly order to-go so as not to keep them too late in the dining area. "ENJOYING SOME COUNTRYLICIOUSNESS with FAMILY" Met up with family at Mels Country Cafe in Tomball. Have not been there since they reopened after the fire. I have always loved their Burgers and Desserts. Isabel is our server and took our drink order. Wife and I had their WineRita Pineapple-Jalapeno (Margaritas). We also ordered from the Appetizer menu, the "Fried Mushrooms" (2-orders); Hand battered Fried Mushrooms. Served with your choice of Horseradish or Ranch Dressing. Chose both. When our drinks arrived, we placed our food order. My wife and I are each having the "Raspberry Chicken Salad"; Cajun grilled Chicken Breast on a bed of Spring Salad Mix, Feta Cheese, BACON, Red Onions, Croutons, Cucumbers & Tomatoes. Served with Raspberry Vinaigrette Dressing. The Boys, Daaron, Chris & Tyler are each having "The Mel Burger"; A full pound of Fresh Ground Beef, 1/2 pound of BACON, 3 slices of American Cheese garnished with all the traditional favorite trimmings. The Girls, Step & Jaiden are each having the "Southern Hot & Spicy Chicken Sandwich"; Southern Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich. A Chicken Fried Chicken Breast served on a regular bun dressed with Hot Honey, Lettuce, and topped with Homemade Pimento. Several French Fries will be around the table for all to enjoy. While we were enjoying those Pineapple-Jalapeno Margaritas, the Fried Mushrooms arrived. First off, that drink is mighty tasty with a solid kick - that's some good stuff. The Mushrooms didn't last long. They are absolutely the Best Fried Mushrooms around, with the Perfect Breading creating a slight crunch - with some very fresh Delicious Mushrooms inside. The Horseradish was a good choice, it really added a kick to these Mushrooms. Ranch goes with everything and these Mushrooms were just that much better. We chatted for a while, then our main food arrived. Those Mel Burgers are HUGE with lots of BACON all around and draping down the sides. Lots of Tasty Meat Patties also, and each was also prepared Perfectly. All three of the boys loved their Mel Burger. It's also one of my favorite Burgers ever. I had this before and they look the same now. Mels does Burgers right. The French Fries were also enjoyed and most of them were gone. The girls loved their Spicy Chicken Sandwich. which has the Just Right amount of Hot Honey to the Chicken. My wife and I loved our Raspberry Chicken Salad. It has a lot of Chicken in there and was Tastyliciousness in every bite. Love that Raspberry Vinaigrette Dressing. It was thick and strong on the Raspberry, the way it should be. Mels always hits it our of the ball park, and they did so the night we were there. Isabel was great and earned the Dollar-Bow-Tie Award for going 'above-n-beyond' the norm. So we started by ordering a basket of onion rings and I have to tell you that those are some of the best onion rings I've had in years. They were super crispy but the breading was very light, in fact super light. That was a nice surprise because I get tired of a gob of breadcrumbs in my mouth while I'm trying to eat an onion ring. They brought some rolls and cornbread and I liked the cornbread because it was sweet. They don't have butter for it and I don't eat whipped margarine spread, but the sweetness was sufficient that I ate it by itself and enjoyed it. Mr. Picky is not a sandwich man, but I talked him into trying a house special sandwich that was not on the main menu but rather was listed on a small side menu. That was the southern hot honey and spicy chicken sandwich served with green tomato and pimento cheese. He really loved that and I had to pull hard to grab just one sample bite, and I agree that it was very tasty. It was super duper messy so my suggestion is that you just sit there and eat the thing and don't bother cleaning your fingers until you're done :-). I ordered the chicken fried steak but honestly couldn't figure out why so many people talk about it, I thought it was just very average and I left most of it on the plate. One of my sides was the potato cheese soup and that was actually a nice surprise, not too thick, and really quite tasty. When it came to dessert we couldn't make up our minds on what to get. I looked at the menu and there were three things that seemed interesting. I asked the waitress what her favorite things were on the dessert menu and she named the three things I had been looking at. Well, we just had to order three desserts and we'd share them all to see what we liked. Our great waitress, Madeleine, joked that there were no judgments in the place for eating extra dessert. :-). We just like to sample so we know for future what we like. Anyway, Mr. Picky glommed right onto the homemade bourbon chocolate fudge pecan pie served with ice cream, and I had to fight him again to get one tiny little bite; it was actually pretty good. We both tried the blackberry cobbler and it was okay but we didn't love it; I like a cobbler with an actual pie crust not a soft cake kind of thing, so most of that stayed on the table. Our third dessert was the banana pudding and that's the one that I really liked. Next time I will tell them to leave the little cookies and cream in the kitchen and just bring me that lovely bowl - and it was generous in size - filled with custard and banana. Loved that! Overall, Mr. Picky had a fabulous meal, but I would order something else next time, but the experience was good enough that we will go back. read more

This restaurant was quite busy on a Friday night but we only had to wait a few minutes for a table for four. I had the grilled catfish. If you are not hungry this is a monster amount of food to get through. If you are famished, you will appreciate the plate full of food. My catfish had a good flavor. Overall a good experience. Came at lunch for their famous Country Fried Chicken. Where my husband tried to convince me it was chicken as the name implied. And I showed him the color and texture. No convincing him it's beef. It a pounded, well tenderized piece of beef. Then lightly battered and fried. Oh their frying skills are unmatched. Come here for any friend item. You will not be disappointed. They have the best Onion Rings in Northwest Houston. I can't think of anyone comes close to their delicate batter. Huge perfect crispy onion rings. Flour batter not the cornmeal kind. This place was AWESOME. My first time. I'm a little picky about southern food so I didn't know what to expect at first but I'm glad I went. I had the Cajun grilled chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. I have to eat histamine friendly & surprisingly I didn't have any bad reactions. Food was definitely fresh. Great country diner. Service is superb! Prices are reasonable. We got the small Country fried steak with cream gravy and mashed potatoes. The steak is very large, it was thin, tender and had good flavor. The mashed potatoes and gravy were great. Also got the double bacon cheeseburger with fries. The burger looks great, tasted ok,The fries were hot and yummy. The burger could have been seasoned better and the bacon tasted old, the veggies were fresh. Food - 8/10 We were here for a family members birthday. We ordered the onion rings as the appetizer. While they were good, they weren't great. They were rather greasy which means they were either not drained long enough or the fryer temp wasn't hot enough. The flavor was still good and we enjoyed them too. The caveat for all the dishes was the chicken fried steak. The sandwhich and the regular weren't cooked long enough. Both people were able to taste the flour which means they weren't cooked long enough. They said the steak was good but the batter was disappointing. The regular burger and the corn dogs were 10/10. Service - What started as very disappointing service turned around when we moved to a different table. The woman who finally served us was great and we enjoyed having her as our waitress. 10/10 Ambiance - It still feels like Mel's even after the fire. It's bright and cheerful but I will also say that it is loud. Can't really help it though. Still a good experience and we'll go back if/when we have a chance. I love finding a local place, full of people who have been coming in for decades, I am confident in that word, decades and using it for this little spot. Its on a well traveled but old road and you pretty much take your life in your hands trying to leave the parking lot, but que sera, right? The staff was so typical of a roadway diner, the menu was exactly what I expected, the prices, the tea, everything was just very typical for a place called Mel's country cafe. 9.28.24 Was not able to check in. We all had zero wifi here. We have not been here since before they caught on fire and rebuilt. The inside looks almost the exact same as before. It does not matter what time you come here, they are always busy. They have the biggest chicken fried steak I have ever seen. My daughter ordered it with cabbage and mashed potatoes. She said it was good. She ordered cream and brown gravy, but did not like the brown gravy but the cream gravy was really good. I ordered chicken fried chicken. It was very good. The crust was cooked just right. The mashed potatoes are homemade not from a box. Yum. My hubby ordered some chicken with pico de gallo and cheese on it. He said it was very tasty. Desserts are a must here. Their desserts do change. The banana pudding was so good & huge too! My hubby ordered the blackberry cobbler and he did not like it. My husband loves this place. Down home "grub" for lunch or dinner with a homemade vibe. The chicken fried steak is humongous and this seems to be the local favorite. Each table is served warm rolls and cornbread. If we go there I generally will get the cheeseburger and fries which are very good. I'm more of a healthy food kinda person so I try to stay away from the deep fried stuff. ( ....there are plenty of fried options on the menu ) They do have grilled fish but I'm not a fan of catfish. If you go there try not to sit by the fly zapper on the wall towards the back of the restaurant. Ick! The young lady at the cash register was in a very miserable mood the day we visited . Today was my first visit to this hidden gem and I'm in love. There is nothing better than a small home town restaurant. First of all, amazing customer service. Each worker was nicer then the next and everyone had a smile on their face and that makes you feel so much more comfortable. We started with the fried mushrooms and they were off the hook awesome. Not a ton of coating and perfectly crunchy. They were so good! Then we tried the fried food sampler. It came with 2 fried catfish, 2 fried shrimp, 2 hush puppies, 2 steak fingers, 2 fried chicken fingers with 2 sides. We chose fries and green beans. I honestly don't know which was my favorite. Everything was super fresh, perfectly fried and tasty. The green beans were fabulous. We split this platter and we couldn't eat it all. Now we had to get some banana pudding even though we were full and it was sinful. Just fantastic! Omg! I am in love. It was so good and tasty. Perfectly made.
