My car had a check engine light on and overheating signal. Upon took it to my dealership and they said a new water pump was required, and that cost was $2,600. I called Becker and they quoted me HALF of my dealer. After dropping my car off, Becker found that it was just a grounding bolt that was defective. I did not need a hole new water pump. The repair cost was under $100!! These guys could have taken me for a ride like Bill Jacobs was suggesting but they were honest. They saved me thousands in expenses and restored my faith in this industry. Always take your car to Becker for a 2nd assessment! read more

Total Fraud! These guys charged us for work that they did not complete. We took our car in for issues with starting. They came back with $1800 of work that needed to be done, which included a brand new Insterstate battery. They charged us for it, but after we experienced the same issues we originally brought it in for, we took the car to a different shop. The other shop pulled out the OEM battery which was made in Japan, low on battery acid, and out a brand new Interstate battery in which we paid for again. Interstate batteries are all branded, not made in Japan, and the photos from the old battery in our fox report match the photos of the oem battery the other auto shop pulled out of our car. we are going to have to have all of the other work they claim to have done by a different mechanic now too-no telling what repairs they actually did if any. we tried to resolve with the business but they refuse to correspond with us on writing, I wonder why! see pics of the receipts below-hopefully this will prevent others from being scammed. read more

I have to say I am shocked to see these guys are not a 5 star and at the top of this list. Maybe Yelp should purge reviews older than 3 years? I have used a number of local Naperville auto repair shops over the years, some good, some not so good, some friendly, some not so friendly, some a good value, some overpriced. Becker is the most well rounded, perfect place I have found locally. I have 4 cars and I have been using Becker for the past 3 years exclusively. They are always thorough, they always are priced fairly and the friendliest group I have yet to meet. They analyze your car from top to bottom and don't try to push you into work you don't need, but make you aware of work you MAY need down the line. They keep track of the work they have done and work suggested, but not yet done. If something is under warranty from them, they find it themselves and let you know. Example: I recently brought in a car for bad alternator. Their records showed it was done by them previously and the part itself was under warranty. They fixed it, free of charge and I didn't even know that was the car that had had that work done. They could easily have charged me and I'd not have known a thing. Solid! There are quite a few good places in Naperville, but I have to say, these guys go above and beyond and have earned my loyalty. Kudos guys, you rock! read more

Longtime Becker customer....what went wrong? I got a quote this week for a brake job. It sounded very high! coincidence now that Jim Becker sold the company and is totally removed from the operation? Not sure. But I called my car dealer and one other service center. Results....dealer charged same price; other service center $500 lower (dealer also confirmed the fairness of the aftermarket price charged by the other dealer). Lesson learned: Becker now charges as much as the dealer...I suggest you go to dealer for same price and get original manufacturer parts or look for another repair provider! Food for thought. And no, they did not offer to lower the price to meet market pricing! read more

Becker Auto installed a fuel pump that went out after 3 months. I live in VA, and Becker Auto did not pay my 145.00 diagnostic fee. Prety lame since it had a 1 year warranty!! read more

Whomever I spoke with on the phone was extremely ignorant and argumentative. I called to inquire about emission testing being done at their location, because it lists them online as doing such. As soon as I asked I was told "they don't do that and no shop has ever been able to do vehicle emissions testing in Illinois." At this point i knew he was uniformed (as for over 30 years i have taken my cars and my family has before me to local shops for emissions of all our vehicles). I stated, that he was incorrect even if their shop has never done emissions, because other did and it must of recently changed in the past few years. I told him how we have always taken our vehicles to local shops to get them done, but thanks for letting me know. They guy on the other end proceeded to argue, telling me I was wrong and kept talking over me becoming more and more agitated because I was not accepting his incorrect information that he was trying to state as fact. I finally had to stop him and told him I did not call to argue, I simply had a question and a simple no would of been sufficient. If this shop will argue over something so petty as a question, what would they do when they have your car and decide they know better than everyone else, even when they are wrong. I feel sorry for this guy and anyone who does business with this shop. Plenty of other good respectful mechanics in Naperville! Don't waste your time or money! read more

I've been a regular customer for close to 10 years now. I typically bring my cars here for their annual maintenance service. They've handled a couple of major repairs on my '05 Camry, including a new steering rack and a new radiator. I'd say their pricing is competitive with the dealerships, but the main reason I use them is that they do the job right the first time. Never had any follow-on issues with the things they've fixed. More recently, I had a problem with squeaky brakes which they said could be remediated by conditioning the pads and lubricating the caliper slides. But they also told me that the pads still had over 50% material left and that the squeak was not a safety issue, so I opted to defer this work until I need new pads. Overall excellent service. read more

I like this auto repair shop. I dropped off my 20-year-old VW on a Sunday, left my keys in the drop box, and left them a voice-mail with what I perceived was wrong with it. By the following Tuesday it was all fixed. They corrected the issue I knew about, which was the coolant leaking out of the three sensors, and found another significant issue that I suspected but did not present them with (wanted to see if they offered anything on it, and they did). The pricing was fair, and actually came below my "mental" estimate (repair shops can really go to town on cooling system repairs). No one there appeared phony or wore that forced corporate smile and gave me a litany of lines learned at some customer-relations seminar. Rather, they were economical with their explanations and were competent and efficient. I've only been here once, but my impression is that this is a honest shop with good management and repair technicians. They would be my first choice for next auto repair event. read more

Went to have my sons brakes checked out... was NEVER told up front there would be a charge for an estimate! They had the nerve to charge $49!! When I called to complain they didn't care! I've had 3 other written estimates from reputable companies and was not charged a dime! Total rip off!! Besides that they were double the other estimates for the exact same work! Beware!!! read more

I'm surprised to see that I've not written a Becker review. I've used them for almost ten years and have been a satisfied customer each time. They are fair in price, accurate and thorough in their repairs, and they communicate well. Every time I've dropped off a car there at night, for major or minor work, I've gotten their diagnostic and estimate call early the following morning. Repairs are then handled expeditiously. I've never had an unpleasant surprise. It's best to have an appointment in advance, but I've called and gotten same day oil changes. read more

Nope. I had them replace a $2.00 valve stem on my spare steel 15in trailer tire. I thought the charge was very high for this simple task. $32. The counter person explained their hourly rate was $98. So I paid a rate for a Senior Mechanic that works on complex engine rebuilds, for a valve stem. The logic doesn't work for me. Then the guy from the office came out and challenged me to provide proof that his $32 fee was too high. I told them to take my money and left. read more

I have brought my car in several times over the years for various issues, and it has always been repaired promptly and for a fair price. One time I thought I had slow leaks in several tires and brought the car in to have the tires replaced. Instead, they found a simple issue with the rims not sealing correctly, and solved the issue for a fraction of the price of new tires. These people are very honest, very efficient, and great at communicating with the customer every step of the way. Highly recommended. read more

Owner replied to request for cost to replace my two engine mounts. He quoted about $600 with tax. I moved to schedule and he said i had to pay about $100 more for him to diagnose my problem. I said i dont need it diagnosed, I'm asking you to replace them. He stopped responding to all my emails from then on. Teo weeks and 3 emails later, i figured i would warn others. Very Impressed. My car was making an odd sound. I couldn't identify where it was coming from. I took it into Becker . They were able to decipher the problem immediately. They gave me an estimate of the cost of repair . That is exactly what I paid. I brought it in and had it back the same day. I was so impressed is when the gentleman called with the estimate he informed me that it may need another part as well. When I spoke to him next time he said that it wasn't going to need that part. We have used Becker for several years and have no complaints. Prices are consistently lower than dealership and they have always been excellent when describing issues with our cars and level of severity. I recently had a major issue with my Elantra which they diagnosed and I realized may be under warranty. They were very understanding of me taking it to the dealership and told me exactly what to tell them. They were dead right and it ended up saving me a tremendous amount of money. An honest, highly competent mechanic is hard enough to come by. One that doesn't charge an arm and a leg is pure gold. I brought my "commuter" car there three times, once for a check engine light that was misdiagnosed at another shop for $450. Becker had me out the door in one day for $215, I'm kicking myself for not finding them earlier on that one, and then for oil changes and minor stuff the other two times. Very solid service. I was having issues with my engine quitting without warning - I had been stuck at traffic lights, in moving traffic, and parking lots. After yet another incident in driving rain, I made it to Becker after hours on Friday night and dropped the keys in the overnight box with a note (obviously no appointment.). They called at 9:15 Saturday morning with a diagnosis and estimate. Repairs were done and car ready to pick up by 11:30. Top notch. Very happy to have a dependable car back. read more

Becker's Service Center is fantastic! They are very efficient, accurate, and reasonably priced. I drive a Mini Cooper, and so sometimes the parts/labor can get expensive, but they've never seemed to have a problem! It seems like they deal with imported cars frequently, and it shows! Every time I call, they know exactly who I am and can almost always get me an appointment within 24 hours. I especially appreciate that they separate out the services by what is necessary in order to safely drive my car, and what can wait until my next paycheck. Becker harks back to the service you would expect from the local repair shop in a small town...times when the the people servicing your car treated the customer like family. The mechanics at Becker's are great not only because it is evident that they are highly trained technicians but also because they give the customers options. Options? They give honest diagnostics and breakdown what's going on with your car. They give you all the repairs that are needed for your car, the repairs that are needed immediately so the car can be driven safely down the road, and repairs that can wait until the next service. All the information/options are given to the customer and the customer can decide how to proceed next. Whether you get all the repairs done or wait on some repairs until the next servicing, I like that they print out the information (including labor hours and parts) for the repairs completed and repairs recommended. If you want it done right the first time...get your car serviced at Becker. read more

Very nice people, but I won't be going back. After 2 visits within 6 weeks and spending a few thousand on repairs, my car was exhibiting the same problems. Rather than a 3rd visit, I drove it to a dealership (very nervously, because smoke was coming out of the hood), and traded it in. It's a shame because the people that work there are great, but I don't trust the work unfortunately. read more

I recently went in to have a simple repair done on my vehicle, and received a call shortly afterward that it was done. I arrived to pick the car up and started it, and low and behold it wouldn't move. I went to inquire if they had any problems, and they replied that they didn't. . that they test drove the car and everything was fine with it, so somehow something else happened to my car while it was parked there between the time they test drove it and the time I tried taking it home. Right. I then told them to please see what was wrong, and they found more issues, of course. I told them that I didn't have the money to fix these issues, and they said that was fine but they're charging me $90 more because they looked at it. After I was finally able to gather the money to pay these imbeciles off, I learned that they had already gone ahead with the repairs so that I would have to pay them even if I didn't want them to do the work. Becker is the classic example of a service center that will take you for every possible thing that you're worth while they have your vehicle. read more

I took my car to Becker Service Center for a squeaking noise issue. Becker diagnosed the problem to be the shocks which the mechanic said needed to be replaced. I drove the car home and noticed the noise was not resolved after the I had paid them. I brought it back and they informed me they could not hear it. Frustrated, I brought the car to another mechanic who informed me that they removed a mounting plate that was necessary for the operation of the vehicle. Yet the best part was that it was not the shocks that were making the squeaking nose but a brake cable that had worn down and was rubbing against bracket it was mounted to. The mechanic diagnosed the noise issue within 5 minutes of being there and fixed it for free. I brought the vehicle back to Becker asking for a fair resolution to the issue and they offered to refund me the money for the shocks, not any of the cost of labor. I would have been happy with a partial refund for labor but after receiving much attitude and having my paperwork basically thrown back at me decided to file a complaint with the BBB. Beware if you decide to take your vehicle here, might not end well. read more

BEWARE: Jim is Dishonest & Unprofessional! Service not completed properly. October 27th 2011: I called Becker Service and spoke with Jim. After a description of what I was in need of he assured me his shop could complete this in one day without any problems. He mentioned that it may take one additional day to have the flywheel resurfaced. At that time I scheduled the appointment.October 31, 2011: I dropped the vehicle off, Jim said he would call me upon completion. I explained to him that it is vital to have the flywheel re-machined for proper execution once completed. Jim said he would be the judge of that once they inspected it and may only need to be grinded. I cautioned him that grinding the flywheel is not recommended. November 1, 2011: Jim called me mid afternoon saying the Jeep is completed and ready for pick up. He mentioned to me at that time they ran into 3 minor problems.1. A header bolt was cross threaded therefore they had to re-tap to correct2. The speedometer is not working 3. The engine will not shut off all the time when the ignition key is turned offI responded by saying, I can see how the header bolt may have been cross threaded. However I told him I did not have the other 2 problems and would not pick up the vehicle in that condition. He told me that they did not test drive it prior, therefore they cannot be sure it was as preexisting condition. I emphatically explained to him the speedometer and ignition was working correctly and that his mechanics may have made a mistake during the reinstallation. I told him I would contact a Jeep specialist and get back to him. In doing so, the specialist explained that the speedometer cable can only be installed one way and that when they took it out, they probably reinstalled it back incorrectly. He also explained to me to that there is no reason why my Jeep should not shut off unless they crossed a few wires or something went faulty. I called Becker Service Center and spoke with Jim explaining this to him. He became abrasive and said he would have his mechanics double check everything and call me back. Within 30 minutes, I received a call from Jim stating that the vehicle is all fine and ready for pick up. I asked if the 3 items were corrected and he said yes. I asked what was causing the speedometer not to work and the engine not to shut off, his response was,- The speedometer cable was not installed all the way in - The engine would not shut because the vehicle was suspending in the air on the lift with the tires hanging in the flex state.I said I had never heard of such a thing as the engine not shutting off when on a lift. 10 minutes later, I arrived at his shop and paid for the services rendered. Upon pick up, I asked about the flywheel's condition. He said it was not bad therefore they grinded down a couple of hot spots. I left his shop and noticed 3 things right away. 1. The clutch is almost fully released before it engages 2. The flywheel is slipping. When driving and accelerating the tach / engine revs up to about 3000rpms before it engages and picks up speed.3. There is zero free play in the clutchNovember 2, 2011 : I contacted Becker Service Center promptly at 7:00am informing Jim of these concerns. His response was that it was the best medium in order to not have the gears grind when shifting. He said due to the geometry of the clutch fork, it had to be that way. I disagreed and said that something is not installed correctly. He became abusive and loud interrupting me on three occasions saying there is nothing he can do. I explained to him that I paid him good money to have this service completed and that he assured me prior to delivering the vehicle that his shop can perform the job correctly. He attempted to tell me that maybe I ordered the incorrect parts and I should check with the manufacturer then reluctantly told me to bring the vehicle back in.I immediately contacted the manufacturer and spoke with their technical support advisor, Larry and he assured me I ordered the correct parts. I delivered the vehicle back to Becker Service Center at 8:30am that morning of November 2, 2011 and explained to him that I did order the correct parts.Becker Service Center had my vehicle all day without contacting me. I called Jim at 5:01pm and asked for a status update. He quickly responded and said yes, it's ready for you to pick up. I asked if everything is correct and he said yes. I asked what they changed. He told me the disc had high points and now is fine. I picked the vehicle up at approximately 5:30pm that day and noticed upon driving that the only remaining challenge was that there is still no free play in the clutch. At this time I inquired with a few Jeep specialists and they advised me to take it to another shop and have it corrected. They informed that if there is no free play then the clutch kit was installed incorrectly and is causing further damage. I would not recommend this shop. read more

The prices are comparable to the dealer's and the customer service is much worse. I called and asked if they could look diagnose my car the same day. They said probably and if not that day, the next day. I called at the end of the 2nd day and they hadn't looked at it yet. They called me the morning of the 3rd day (the day I needed it back) and gave me the high estimate (on which they said they don't negotiate). After they had the car for 3 days, I didn't have much of a choice but to authorize the repairs. I will not return and do not recommend them. read more

I am sorry to say that the service provided was a failure. The brakes required four trips to repair and finally, I went to the dealer and had the work done over. While they reimbursed me for some of the additional expense I will never darken their door and advise you to do the same. read more

I recently brought my SUV there because there was an error light on the dash indicating some kind of transmission problem. They charged me $39 to diagnose the problem. They said that the diagnostic did not show any error codes but that the transmission was "shot" and needed replacement for $2,900.00 I LUCKILY have a friend who works as a mechanic in a Ford dealership and took it to him. He told me that there was no way they could have missed the error code and that the error code indicated a very common fault in these transmissions that can be fixed for under $500. Everyone makes mistakes and I am not condemning Becker Service Center for misdiagnosing the problem. I am, however, condemning them for refusing to even talk with me today when I called them, very politely, to let them know that they blew the diagnosis. They refused to admit any error. The guy talked over me and had not interest in hearing what might have done wrong. Any business that is not interested in getting better is a business that I will not support. I didn't even ask for my money back! When I dropped off the car there was someone at the counter complaining about a repair and that should have been my first clue. They seem to be nice people and I guess that are probably OK for oil changes and wiper blade replacement and such but I would NOT trust them with a major repair. read more
